Hello KSPS families, We are fast approaching the end of term and there is a real buzz around the school at the moment with lots of events on the calendar before we all have a well-deserved break. Last week our rugby squad went to Darwin and competed against other schools in the Eels Cup as a prelude to the big game on Saturday evening. We have only received positive feedback about the level of sportsmanship and camaraderie that our students demonstrated while away. Congratulations to everyone involved, you have done yourselves, your families and KSPS proud. A big thank you to Mr. East, Mr. Poddy and Miss. Ebony for accompanying the squad and making it all possible. Read more in Mr. Easts article later in the newsletter. Yesterday we had Sam Derchie visit the school and perform Music And Stories From Ghana. He wowed the crowd with his talking drumand other percussion instruments and stories from Africa. I have included a few responses from our students below: Sam was great, he told very funny stories. Annalise Yr. 2. The show was so cool because he played with lots of different drums. Boyd Yr. 4. He was good. He acted really funny and I thought it would be fun to go to Africa. I thought the talking drum was the most interesting instrument. Sharalle Yr. 3. Due to a clash with the Year 6 high school orientation next week, we start our athletic events tomorrow; with the Year 6 students heading to Town Oval for their high jump competition. The remainder of the students in year 3-5 will complete in high jump next Tuesday after the running of the 800m. All high jump events this year are being held at the Town Oval so we can access NT Athletics facilities. Please see the detailed note from Mr. Broadhead on page 3. Remember the Beat this Friday evening. Our girls have worked extremely hard over the semester as part of the regional choir and it would be great to see as many families as possible supporting them, and all performers at this regional spectacular. Last years event was a great family night out , and this year promises to be magical’. Thank you to Miss. Jean and Miss. Reale for their commitment and support of our choir throughout their journey. There is a great opportunity for all of the ballet dancers out there; two dancers from Melbourne City Ballet are running a workshop this Sunday 18 June, 12pm-2.30pm for young lovers of classical ballet. The workshops are free and a group of young participants will be chosen to perform in the companys A Midsummer Nights Dream at Godinymayin on Friday 28 July. See the advertisement later in the newsletter. Unfortunately the Touch Gala Days that have been advertised for this Thursday and next week have been cancelled, we apologise for any inconvenience. I also need to make special mention of Joshua King who received the Eels Medal on Saturday night for his commitment to Rugby League; his sportsmanship and leadership in this field. Congratulations and well deserved Josh! Hello KSPS families,

We are fast approaching the end of term and there is a real buzz around the school at the moment with lots of events on the calendar before we all have a well-deserved break.

East’s article later in the newsletter.

Yesterday we had Sam Derchie visit the school and perform Music And Stories From Ghana. He wowed the crowd with his ‘talking drum’ and other percussion instruments and stories from Africa. 3.

Eels Cup NRL Gala Day Darwin Last Thursday the KSPS Rugby League Team travelled to Darwin along with Miss. Eb, Mr. Poddy and myself to participate in the Eels Cup Gala Day at Warren Park on Friday. Despite some technical issues, Super Poddy got us to Mackillop College safely, in time to set up camp for the night. Friday morning we battled the Darwin traffic to get to Warren Park. As the first team there, KSPS took it upon themselves to assist Trent from NRL in setting up for the day. 12 teams participated in the day with 2 teams coming all the way from Katherine to compete. We drew Pool B and had to wait until the 3rd game of the day to have our first run. Ava Osmotherly led the team out as captain in the first game against St Francis of Assisi (eels). Although unstructured, the team put in a good performance, winning 20-0 and showing some outstanding sportsmanship. Jake Pierce led us out for game 2 against Gray Primary. This was a much tougher game as we regained our structure and held strong winning 8-0. Lilly Bright had the reigns for game 3 against Wanguri Primary who again were a strong team. In one of our best team performances, KSPS came out on top with a 20-4 win. Joshua King took charge in game 4 against St Francis (Gold). This was a big and strong team where our tackling needed to be on song. Harry Shrimp led the defence and helped us to a tight 12-8 win. On the back of his performance in the 4th game, Harry captained the team in the final pool match which saw the two undefeated teams of Pool B come up against each other, vying for a spot in the final. KSPS scored first but let in two tries to be down 8-4 with only minutes remaining. We crossed the line in the final play and had a try awarded until the ref changed his decision (correctly) due to an incorrect kick. The team put in a tremendous effort and should be proud of their performance and sportsmanship during this tense game.

The 2 Katherine teams, KSPS and Clyde Fenton, squared off for 3rd place. Joel Kuhn took charge in the last game which saw two talented teams play entertaining footy that was played in great spirts with KSPS coming home with the win 12-4.

Well done to all the students who came away, they did themselves and their school proud and should be commended on their performance and behaviour. KSPS were the highest placed team with both boys and girls in the squad and received high praise from other teachers and event organisers on the day due to their attitude, sportsmanship and team work. Best on field for KSPS was Harry Shrimp (tackled all day!) and Jake Pierce (strong running kept us moving forward) and our most improved players were Tysne Leonhardt (Try saving tackle after try saving tackle) and Erin Dahl (with the best switch play long ball pass I’ve seen).

Mr East (Proud Coach)
