Enviro club working bee

On Wednesday the enviro club held a working bee on the Crane St wildlife corridor. The team weeded and

mulched to prepare the area for spring planting using the Canada Bay Council Small Environment grant.

BIG SHOUT OUT to the year 11 boys: Jaali, Ethan and Ben who did an AMAZING job cleaning out the

garden shed, washing it and putting things back in an organised manner.

We would also like to thank Ms Hogan and Ms Wormleaton and the school P&C for applying and being

successful in gaining an additional $1200 for the Enviro club from the Telstra Kids grant.

Great news! Telstra Kids Grant

We are delighted to announce our success in applying for a $1,200 grant from Telstra. Telstra Kids helps

kids thrive in their connected world. Our Telstra Kids grant will be used to In 2017, a new club for Concord

High students was formed, the Enviro Club. The Club has an overarching goal of minimising the school’s

impact on the environment. A key project of the group is to regenerate the wildlife corridor inside the

school grounds to provide a safe and suitable habitat and passageway for native species. Over the past year,

members of the Enviro Club have worked hard weeding, clearing and replanting.

Huge thanks to Melissa Wormleaton from Telstra, who applied for the funding alongside Donna Hogan. We

are very excited to share in the million dollars the Telstra Foundation provides each year to help kids

connect to a digital future.

Breakfast club at Concord High School

Below are two pictures from Wednesday morning’s breakfast club. Breakfast club operates every

Wednesday morning from 7.45 until 8.30 in the staff common room. We operate with the generous

support of OzHarvest, Bakers Delight Leichhardt, Donut King Leichhardt and Coles. We also couldn’t

operate breakfast club without the time and effort that our Student Learning Support Officers put into

the mornings. Thank you Ms Nolan, Ms Divito, Ms Valele and Ms Giles. If your student would benefit

from some breakfast, something for lunch, a cup of tea and a chat please encourage them to come

along. This week we had 92 students attend.

Welfare News By Fiona Milligan

This week, all Year 8 took part in a Welfare Program delivered by the Reach Foundation which was

designed to challenge the students about the online messages they send to each other. And, wow,

did it challenge them and, me too, at times!

Our students were asked to write down something really negative and awful that they had seen sent

online eg as a txt message, on instagram, snap chat etc etc. The students then had to role play saying

that same message to a person, looking them in the eye. Can I tell you, that in all of the scenarios,

not one student felt comfortable saying what they had in their hands to the person opposite them.

Some students could not repeat the message at all, others refused to look at the other person and

all the students felt really bad about delivering the message.

So, what was the point of this exercise? We tend to hide behind our screens and send messages,

images and photos that we would never ever say or give directly to another person one on one. I

would strongly encourage parents to continue these discussions at home, asking our students to

really think twice about what they send online as the consequences can be devastating.

I was incredibly proud of how Year 8 acted in the workshop – they were RESPECTFUL to one

another and RESPONSIBLE in following the very important rules regarding honesty and trust. Well

done, Year 8.

The Formal Year Assemblies were held on Thursday. A big congratulations to our award winners

and performers as well as thank you to the Year Advisers/Assistants and students who put the

assemblies together.

Have a lovely weekend.

HSIE News By Miss Milinovic

This term in HSIE, we have embarked on a new and exciting partnership

with our local school community, Lucas Gardens. Our Year 10

Commerce students, along with students from the TAS department and

our SRC participated in a visit to our new partnered school to be a part

of ceremony for the newly elected SRC members of Lucas Gardens. Our

students also came to meet with the students from Lucas Gardens as we

work towards active citizenship within our local community and as part

of our topic of Community Involvement in Stage 5 Commerce.

We were given the privilege of not only meeting these wonderful students,

but had a guided tour and speech made by the Principal Ms Jenny Zagas,

who helped explain our new venture and how we as the local school could

assist with the learning of the Lucas Garden students within the classroom

and beyond.

In Week 9 of this term, we are very excited to announce that Year 10

Commerce will be hosting a market day in honour of the Lucas Garden

students and will act as a fund raiser to help our local school with tools

which will assist the students with their understanding and knowledge of

the NSW National Curriculum.

We would like to thank the wonderful Ms Jenny Zagas, the extraordinary

teachers at Lucas Gardens, Mrs Engisch, Mrs Reda, Ms Turner, Ms

Verniquet and Mr Basak for their contribution and support, as well as our

new friends from Lucas Gardens. We look forward to this ongoing

partnership between our schools.

Year 8 Geography The Water World Project

Congratulations to the following students (pictured) who have achieved a Grade A or B in their latest

projects on The Water World.

Students were asked to research a specific natural disaster pertaining to the water cycle. They had the

option of choosing a cyclone, hurricane, tornado or even a tsunami to name a few.

Student were asked to use their flair and talent for creativity and create a visually pleasing and informative

report using various directive terms such as define, explain, describe and discuss as part of our ongoing

focus on literacy in HSIE. As part of the numeracy component, students were asked to provide a map,

graphs, pie graphs and tables to demonstrate their capacity to interpret data relating to the chosen

disaster and assess the impacts and possible management strategies which could be utilised for future

disasters.

Well done to these students, who have demonstrated their ability to work towards their personal best

and excellence.
