QISSN & Confraternity Preparation

Our Open Netball Team and 1st XIII Rugby League Team continue their preparations for their respective Queensland Carnivals in the first week of the June holidays. Both teams have had intense pre-season training and are now involved in local competition with their focus clearly on building towards a successful campaign in June.

The Netball team began their playing season mid Term 1. With a very capable team, this year’s involvement in the local competition is expected

to have them sharper and more competitive when they take the courts at Boondall over five days of the QISSN Carnival in June.

The 1st XIII team’s first round of competition on Wednesday showed great promise. A number of late team changes provided the opportunity for emerging players to press for inclusion in the squad. The 10-18 loss, to Keebra Park SHS, reflected the difference between the two sides, while the teams resolve in defence against bigger opposition was terrific. Never the less, errors while in possession proved costly. The boys will learn quickly from these experiences and go to Brisbane for the confraternity Carnival with quiet confidence.

The girls play on Monday nights at Firth Park and the boys on Wednesdays (often at the Burleigh Bears Juniors). Watch the newsletter for times and venues.

Dr Jeff Kemp, Guidance Counsellor and educator with over 30 years of experience will be presenting key points from his book Be a Parent not a Pal. For Jeff, parenting is a journey of self-discovery for the parent and a journey of self-discovery for their teenager, underpinned by the undeniable reality that as a parent, you are the leader of the family to which your teenager belongs, and as such you must lead. You can't be your teenager's pal, but you can be their parent.

In addition, the college counsellors will be addressing some common concerns and tips to help with anxious children.

Congratulations to Year 12 student reece Jackson, who has been selected to attend the United Nations Youth National Conference in Perth in July this year.

Reece was chosen on the merits of his application from thousands of students from across the Asia-Pacific. The conference seeks out, “exceptional young people… [with] the brightest young minds” for this week-long event, which, “aims to create a generation of young Australians who are informed and passionate about the world around them through education, engagement with national leaders, and peer mentorship.”

This year’s conference theme is “The Innovation Revolution”, and Reece will take part in discussion groups, workshops, model UN debates and activities that all explore the impact of technological innovation on our ever-developing world. Reece will be actively seeking sponsorship to cover the cost of his trip to Perth – any support will be greatly appreciated!

Earth Day is Saturday 22 April, so we will ask students to come to school on Friday of Term 2 Week 1 with no plastic disposables in their lunch. Please bring containers or paper bags.

Plastic is a massive issue; the first piece of plastic ever created is still on earth.

Plastic is not biodegradable.

Marymount will do their part for Earth Day.

Parents, please make sure that your child’s lunch has zero plastic in it.

Students please be responsible for looking after our planet by ditching the plastic on Friday the 21 April.

Matilda Andersonon behalf of the environmental Club

My thanks to the students, teachers and families of Year 11 in particular for the smooth transition and return to classes for the start of this term.

A significant number had some level of adjustment to timetables as we adjusted the imbalances of class sizes. Clearly this group of students is carefully considering their academic pathways and the volume or alteration requests over last term reflected this. It does augur well for a promising outcome of results for the cohort, come the end of Year 12, that the majority have set upon a program of personal success and achievement in their studies.

Subject Changes

A reminder that subjects in the Senior school are mandated as semester long offerings. It is not possible to change to a new subject, since there is an equity issue in completing only 50% of a course or less, and being granted semester's credit; even if good results were possible. Students are always offered the first three weeks of each semester to alter their subject choices.

Parent Teacher Interviews

All is in readiness for the Parent Teacher interviews next week. This is another opportunity for families to track the progress of students in their school work. This will always be viewed by the College as a three way partnership, involving student, parent and school working together for the benefit of the child.

Welcome back to Term Two. This is a busy term for our Junior Secondary students and in particular for the Year Seven and Nine students who will be sitting for the NAPlAN Tests in Week four Tuesday 9 May, Wednesday 10 May and Thursday 11 May.

NAPLAN

Marymount College values this opportunity to gather information of student performance on aspects of Literacy and Numeracy. The tests complement existing school based assessments and we encourage the students to take these tests seriously in the same way as they do their school tests without being overwhelmed. We expect that all students will participate with the exception of those students who are applying for disability adjustments. If for any reason your son or daughter is not available for any of these days, could you please notify the College without delay. Last term Year 7 and 9 students sat a trial test for Numeracy and in Week 2 they will sit a trial literacy test. This is an opportunity for them

to become more familiar with the test conditions and more importantly receive feedback about the progress made so far in the important aspects of Literacy and Numeracy.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent teacher interviews are on Monday 24 April, teachers are available for appointments from 1:00pm to 6:00pm with some teachers also available on Tuesday 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Students are expected to be at the interviews in formal school uniform. If you wish to make an appointment and have not yet done this, please do so at PTO via the Parent Portal. The site is available until 8.00am on Monday. If you have any problems, please contact the College.

Students will be dismissed at 12:30pm on Monday. If they wish to remain at school and be supervised till 3:00pm, please inform the College.

Katrina NicholsonAssistant Principal Junior Curriculum (Acting)

Last term Year 7 and 9 students sat a trial test for Numeracy and in Week 2 they will sit a trial literacy test.

In our prayer, at the beginning of school on Tuesday morning, we began by reflecting on the things which had been happening in our lives, and those of people up and down the east Coast since the last term got cut short by Cyclone debbie.

Easter certainly was/is not about eating chocolate. We remembered that many had lost their possessions, suffered flood damage and some had lost their lives. We considered what Easter is really about and what being Easter people means. The message is clear. Jesus is at the centre of everything, Jesus is alive.

Being Easter people means that we are not overwhelmed when faced with fear and uncertainty, Jesus assures us he is always with us. We learn from the early Christians that “there was no needy person among them “ they shared everything with those who had nothing, they did not waste resources. Easter people reach out to the poor. Easter people are not an exclusive group; God loves everyone equally not just people who look or sound or think like us. Easter people believe that God forgives, this tells us

we can change and make our lives better. Easter people are full of joy and hope.

Project Compassion

Our Project Compassion fundraising will be finalised imminently. Given the shorter time period for the campaign, the figures are already looking very good. Thanks to everyone who has helped to make our campaign successful.

God’s Sense of humour

And, given that Easter is not about eating chocolate, God’s sense of humour is nevertheless boundless! As a certain Year Coordinator was emphasising the irrelevance of chocolate eating to the gathered flock at their Year Meeting on Thursday morning, a huge crow flew in and dropped an empty Cadbury’s Favourites box at his feet! St Francis of Assisi must have been listening.

PARISH MASS TIMES

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.

Cam’s Cause

In our preparation for the College Anzac liturgy, Mr doug Baird spoke to a group of Year 12 students on Thursday morning. doug is raising awareness and funds for Cam’s Cause, a not for profit charity which was set up in 2014 by friends and family of Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG.

Cameron, one of Australia’s highly decorated soldiers, was killed in action in June 2013 in Afghanistan and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. Cameron was Doug’s son.

The students were privileged to hear this most moving presentation, they would be inspired by his determined spirit, his personal generosity and how he always put others first, he was a great AFL player and many of the attributes he demonstrated on the footy field were very clearly demonstrated in his military service. There is much to glean from his story, and Cam’s Cause is a fitting tribute to his memory as it supports soldier’s welfare, something which Cam spent an

extraordinary amount of time doing when he was home in Australia. When visiting Currumbin RSL look out for their life-size statue of Cam.

Two students will tell the story at our ANZAC liturgy, and we will be organising a collection for the College donation to Cam’s Cause in the coming weeks.

Cam’s favourite mantra, “Aspire to inspire” can be seen on the noticeboard in the car park at the College entrance.

On a lighter note, three or four years ago a parent told me a delightful story about her daughter’s big dream. The story goes that when asked which musical instrument she wanted to learn she decided on the trumpet, to everyone’s surprise, the reason – she wanted to play the Last Post at the school’s ANZAC service. The dream will be realised at our ANZAC Liturgy on Monday morning. A huge moment in someone’s life!

With such great things happening for oztag at Marymount College, we now turn our attention to the Queensland All Schools Oztag Championships held at the Sunshine Coast Stadium from July 14 – 16. Mr Brett Smith and I will be organising the teams for this event.

Trials will be held during Week 1 and 2 of this term. Marymount College will enter six teams – three boys and three girls teams across three divisions – Year 7/8, Year 9/10 and Year 11/12. All keen oztag players are most welcome to come down and try out.
