In most cases last year’s jumper or jacket is unlikely to fit as teenage boys seem to grow before our eyes. Every boy needs winter trousers and winter school jumper, jacket or blazer for the seniors. As you are aware, variaons on this are not part of our uniform, including black clothes with logos or hoods. It is very rare in a boys’ school that we need to discuss appropriate jewellery! However, it appears that the 1980s are back and drop earrings are again in fashion as I have asked some boys to remove them for safety reasons. I personally have no problem with drop earrings – I had one myself for a while in the ‘80s – but they are not suitable in the school context. They are easily caught on clothing and can pose a WHS risk in specialist rooms. If your son is leaving home looking like an extra in a Madonna video can you please ask him to keep this for the weekend! As always, we really appreciate the huge support we get from our parent community.

As the weather feels like it is about to change can I please ask that you make sure that your son has the appropriate winter uniform. In most cases last year’s jumper or jacket is unlikely to fit as teenage boys seem to grow before our eyes. Every boy needs winter trousers and winter school jumper, jacket or blazer for the seniors. As you are aware, variations on this are not part of our uniform, including black clothes with logos or hoods. It is very rare in a boys’ school that we need to discuss appropriate jewellery! PORTRAITURE
Year 7 has settled in beautifully and have been WOWING us with their amazing drawing skills. This term Year 7 is investigating the different approaches to creating a portrait. They have studied the art making practice of Chuck Close and his use of the Grid to create realistic drawings. Year 7 has explored proportions of the face and tonality to give form. They will continue their exploration this term of portraiture through the later practice of Chuck Close and begin to experiment with colour and design. Here are some wonderful images of their Grid work, well done Year 7!

Congratulations Wesley Stewart of Year 10. Last week I reported that Wesley had been successful in the first round of auditions for the Year 10 State Drama Ensemble. I am so pleased to announce that Wesley confidently performed in the “call back” audition and has secured a place in the Ensemble. What a privilege for Wesley and we are so pleased that he will be flying the banner for Ashfield Boys High School. The skills that he will learn and the experience that he will bring back to the classroom will be invaluable. I am so looking forward to hearing about his new Drama adventures and seeing him perform as a valued member of the State Drama Ensemble. Break a leg Wesley! Tracy Small Head Teacher CAPA

TANKS FOR THE SHRIMPS
Shrimp club has five shrimp tanks up and running. This week groups chose their shrimps and added them to their tanks. A previous shrimp club member has donated his brood of shrimps back to shrimp club. Thanks to John from 10P for this kind gesture.

ZONE SWIMMING CARNIVAL
The boys who represented ABHS at the 60th Annual Northwest Metropolitan Zone swimming carnival achieved some brilliant results this year. The standout performers were Marlon Makin who won 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle events, while finishing 2nd in 50m backstroke. Tarun Venkateswaran who started his career as a swimmer in the waters of India came within 0.02 of qualifying for the regional for the 100m butterfly. He also finished 3rd in 50m freestyle and 4th in his 16’s 100m freestyle events.
This carnival also had a sad undertone with longtime all rounder Connor Anagnostopoulos leaving ABHS to take up an opportunity chasing his dreams of playing AFL at Westfields Sports. His memory will live on at ABHS in the shape of his younger brother Lian. Leaving the Olympic Park Aquatic centre Connor briefly reflected on his time at our school saying: “I would like to thank all teachers and students who made my time at Ashfield BHS enjoyable and memorable”.
