FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Parents, guardians, care givers and school play a critical role in developing positive attitudes
towards learning and education. When there is open communication between the different
learning spaces we can help our students navigate the adolescent years and the sometimes
difficult path. This term there have been over 250 phone calls home that recognise the positive
work or activities that your students have done or are doing around school. Congratulations to
all students for their commitment to learning and to the contribution that you make to your
school. If you have not received a phone call home yet it may be because your contact
details have changed and school records have not been updated. Please check for the
student and family details update note over the next week and return it to school.
Regular attendance is important as without students our teachers are not able to provide the
skills and experiences for our future leaders. Our staff strive to motivate and engage all
students in learning rather than accepting that some students cannot be engaged. The role of
the student is to participate in all learning opportunities and to rise to the challenges that our
teachers set. We encourage students to take responsibility for their learning and to leave inter-
personal issues at the door. I have visited many classrooms and seen the enthusiasm, passion,
hard work and dedication of our teachers in action, I am also seeing the result of these efforts
in the work that students are producing. As the term continues students will be participating in
assessments and formal examination as well as class tests.
It is very concerning when young people have been exposed to any content that scares them
or plays on their emotions, like those reported in the media of late. Approximately 81% of
parents hand their child an internet-connected device by the age of 4, so active parental
engagement and oversight of a child’s online activities is critical from the start, to help ensure
they are prepared for what they may encounter. It’s important to guide and instil critical
reasoning skills, so they are aware that not everything they see or receive online is real. We
encourage parents to co-view, co-play, ask questions about the games and apps they are
using, and let them know you are there to support them if they are upset or uncomfortable
about anything they see online. Five top tips to help limit your child’s exposure to harmful
content online:
Engage in your child’s online activities - ask what apps, sites and games they’re using
and make sure they’re age-appropriate
Ensure that kids know not to contact strangers online, regardless of the method
Setting privacy systems on devices with your child is a great way to have this
conversation and agree on automatic precautions. Let them know not everything they
see online is real or true
Help them report and block upsetting content they see on social media sites or apps
Let them know they can come to you about anything upsetting they see online and
contact Kids Helpline if they need further support.
Parents who are concerned their child may be susceptible to self-harm should be aware of the
signs to look out for and know where to go for help. See more info here:
