Tercer Domingo de Adviento December 13, 2020

My dear parishioners, I do not know if you heard, but this past week on Tuesday, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep-tion of the Blessed Virgin Mary, His Holiness, Pope Francis, declared a Year of St. Joseph, beginning De-cember 8, 2020 and ending on December 8, 2021. The primary reason for this declaration is to honor the proclamation of St. Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church 150 years ago by Pope Blessed Pius IX. Pope Francis writes in his apostolic letter pro-claiming this special year “The aim of this Apostolic letter is to increase our love for this great saint, to en-courage us to implore his intercession and to imitate his virtues and his zeal.” A year dedicated to a saint or a special theme helps all of us to focus on elements im-portant to our faith and to help us to grow in wisdom and knowledge. In the years leading up the new mil-lennium, St. John Paul II declared different years for the Holy Trinity such as 1997 was the Year of Jesus Christ, 1998 was the Year of the Holy Spirit, 1999 was the Year of God the Father. Pope Benedict XVI de-clared the Year of St. Paul June 2008 – June 2009, in which I developed a deeper love and appreciation for this great evangelical saint. Pope Benedict then de-clared a Year for Priests 2009 – 2010 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of St. John Vianney. I have to be honest and say that year really transformed my life and brought much peace and joy into my heart. So, special years proclaimed by the popes can help us to focus our spiritual energies in a certain di-rection and help us to grow in love for God and grow in holiness. This special year for St. Joseph can help us to do the same. Some of you may recall that this past year I consecrated myself to St. Joseph on May 1st, the Memorial of St. Joseph the Worker. It was my hope to do something similar this coming year with all of you. When Gilbert Rodriguez began working with us in September, I had told him I wanted to do a parish con-secration to St. Joseph. We will most definitely do so now and I would like to do it on Friday, March 19, 2021. We will work on details and we will see how we can do it depending on where we stand with the pan-demic. Either in person or online, we will find a way to honor the Guardian of the Redeemer, St. Joseph. More information to come. Our Blessed Lord and our Blessed Mother entrusted themselves to the care of St. Joseph, let us do the same. “Go to Joseph!” God bless,

Mis queridos feligreses, No sé si ustedes saben, pero el martes de la se-mana pasada, la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concep-ción de la Bienaventurada Virgen María, Su Santidad, el Papa Francisco, declaró un año de San José, comenzan-do el 8 de diciembre de 2020 y terminando el 8 de di-ciembre de 2021. La razón principal para esta declara-ción es en honor a la proclamación de San José como Patrón de la Iglesia Universal hace 150 años por el Papa Beato Pio IX. El Papa Francisco escribe en su carta apostólica proclamando este año especial “La Meta de esta carta Apostólica es aumentar nuestro amor por este gran san-to, para animarnos a implorar su intercesión e imitar sus virtudes y su celo.” Un año dedicado a un santo o a un tema especial nos ayuda a enfocarnos en elementos im-portantes de nuestra fe y nos ayuda a crecer en sabidu-ría y conocimiento. En los años previos al nuevo mile-nio, San Juan Pablo II declaró diferentes años para la Santísima Trinidad tal como 1997 fue el Año de Jesucris-to, 1998 fue el Año del Espíritu Santo, 1999 fue el Año de Dios Padre. El Papa Benedicto XVI declaró el Año de San Pablo en junio de 2008 —junio de 2009, en el cual yo desarrollé un profundo amor y apreciación para esta gran santo evangélico. El Papa Benedicto después decla-ró el Año para los Sacerdotes 2009 —2010 para conme-morar el 150 aniversario de la muerte de San Juan Vian-ney. Tengo que ser honesto y decir que ese año transfor-mó realmente mi vida y trajo mucha paz y alegría a mi corazón. Así que, años especiales proclamados por los papas pueden ayudarnos a enfocarnos en nuestra ener-gía espiritual en cierta dirección y ayudarnos a crecer en el amor a Dios y en santidad. Este año especial para San José nos puede ayudar a hacer lo mismo. Algunos de ustedes recordarán que el año pasado yo me consagré a San José el 1o de mayo, el Memorial de San José Obrero. Tenía la esperanza de hacer algo similar el próximo año con todos ustedes. Cuando Gilbert Rodríguez comenzó a trabajar con nosotros en septiembre, le había dicho que quería hacer una consagración parroquial a San José. Definitivamente lo haremos ahora y me gustaría hacerlo el viernes 19 de marzo, 2021. Trabajaremos en los deta-lles y veremos como podemos hacerlo dependiendo en donde estamos con la pandemia. Ya sea en persona o por internet, encontraremos una forma para honrar a San José el Guardián del Redentor. Ya vendrá más información. Nuestro Santísimo Señor y nuestra Santísima Madre se confiaron al cuida-do de San José, hagamos lo mismo. “¡Vayan a José!” Que Dios les bendiga,

Saint John of The Cross

When John of the Cross was a boy, his father died and his destitute mother sent him to a school for the poor. After join-ing the Carmelites in 1563, he joined forces with Teresa of

Avila to carry out a reform of the order. His first house as leader of the friars was so spare that even Teresa doubted he could live there. But John embraced austerities. His mystical theology teaches the renunciation of all creaturely comforts

for the sake of union with God. “Feed not your spirit on any-thing but God. Cast off concern about things, and bear peace and recollection in your heart.” John died in 1591 and is hailed as the Mystical Doctor.

San Juan de La Cruz

Cuando Juan de la Cruz era un niño, su padre falleció y su madre indigente lo envió a una escuela para los pobres. Des-pués de unirse a los Carmelitas en 1563, se unió a Teresa de

Ávila para llevar a cabo una reforma de la orden religiosa. Su primera casa como líder de los frailes era tan escasa que hasta Teresa dudaba que él pudiera vivir allí. Pero Juan abrazó la

austeridad. Su teología mística enseña la renuncia a todas las comodidades de las creaturas por la unión con Dios. “No ali-

mentes tu espíritu de nada que no sea de Dios. Desecha la preocupación acerca de las cosas y lleva paz y recolección en tu corazón.” Juan murió en 1591 y es aclamado como el Doc-

tor Místico.

Jansenists Crafted a New Crucifix to Symbolically Meet Their Theology that Christ Only Died for a Se-

lect Few

In 1713, Pope Clement XI issued an apostolic constitu-tion condemning a Catholic form of Calvinism known as Jansenism. Cornelius Jansen, bishop of Ypres, estab-lished his own rigorism that lamented the radical toxicity of original sin and the utter immorality of humanity. He taught that God gives his grace only to the predestined and that the saved are few in number. In fact, the Jan-senists even crafted crucifixes with Christ’s arms not at ninety degrees, universally embracing all, but suspend-ed from the crossbeam to signify how Jesus died only for a selected few. Against such pessimism, Pope Clem-ent reemphasized God’s universal love for all, affirmed the inherent goodness of the human person, and con-demned the Jansenist belief that Holy Communion should not be frequently received.

En 1713, el Papa Clemente XI emitió una constitución apostólica condenando una forma católica del calvinis-mo conocida como jansenismo. Cornelio Jansen, obispo de Ypres, estableció su propio rigorismo que lamentó la toxicidad radical del pecado original y la total inmorali-dad de la humanidad. El enseñó que Dios da su gracia solamente a los predestinados y que los salvados son pocos en número. En efecto, los jansenistas hasta ela-boraron su propio crucifijo con los brazos de Cristo no a noventa grados, abrazando universalmente a todos, sino suspendido de la biga transversal para significar como Jesús murió solo por unos pocos seleccionados.
