TDS safety transformersSafety transformers are used for the distribution of very low voltages: this guaranteeshigh protection against electrocution.Short-circuit proof and failsafe transformers offer great reliability in terms of theirgalvanic separation between primary and secondary circuits.Short-circuit proof transformers are protected from the over temperatures consequentin overload and short circuit conditions, by their own incorporated protective device. When normal operating conditions are returned and the transformer temperature is
returned to within operating limits, the transformer will function correctly.Failsafe transformers on the other hand can no longer function, following anomaloususe or fault.

Influence of height (altitude)If the height of the installation site exceeds 2,000m, the reduction of thedielectric strength and the cooling effect of the air should be considered.NEMA and ANSI Standards establish some speci c values that can betaken as a reference:
Load compensation for breaker groupingBreakers mounted side by side and subject to near, or full loadingsimultaneously can generate high temperatures in small or poorlyventilated enclosures. Load reduction must be taken into account. Thefollowing tables are guidelines to prevent potential overloading:
- For a single row the table 5 can be used- In two-row distrubution boards the reduction is approximately of a 25%
- In three-row distribution boards the reduction is approximately of a 30%
DS and DH series
Ambient compensation At temperatures out with the breakers calibrated value +300C +/-50C,the load capacity of the device will vary inversely as a function of itsoperating ambient temperature. Therefore operation at temperatureshigher than 300C will reduce the MCB’s loading capacity.
Influence of ambient temperature and heightCircuit protection
Discrimination or selectivity exists between two protective devices
connected in series when the operation of the downstream device is
such that the fault condition is cleared without operation of the upstream
device
The characteristics of the downstream device should be that clearance
of the fault condition limits the current (let through value) to a value
below the magnetic threshold of the upstream device.
Partial selectivity is said to occur when the selective operation of the
downstream device is at a value between the threshold of the upstream
device’s magnetic trip setting but not exceeding the downstream
device’s rated breaking capacity. At values above this both devices may
operate.
Full selectivity is said to occur when it is selective up to a prospective
value of fault current equal to the downstream devices breaking
capacity.

The use of breakers in DC circuits
The thermal characteristics for TemDin2 breakers are unaffected by the type of current applied, that is either direct current or alternating current. The magnetic trip value increases by 40%. For example, in the case of a breaker of tri pping characteristic B and 10A rated current, its magnetictripping value will be between 30A and 50A in alternating current. The magnetic tripping value for this very same breaker in direct current will bebetween 42.4A and 70.7A.
Influence of non standard frequencies
For operational frequencies greater than 50/60Hz, the effect of these non-standard frequencies must be taken into consideration. Thermal
characteristics are independent from variation in frequency. Magnetic tripping values are directly affected by frequency. As a reference, forfrequencies of 100, 200, 300 and 400Hz, the values at which the magnetic tripping occurs become increased in a 10, 20, 30 and 40% respectively.
Use at other voltages
The maximum rated operational voltage for TemDin2 MCBs is 440V~ with a reduction in breaking capacity of 10%. Supply voltages lower than theassigned value can be applied.
Supply voltages up to 750V can be applied in special conditions of service and short circuit current rates. Please contact Terasaki for further details.
Phase Imbalance
In three phase circuits designed for single phase distribution through to nal load, consideration should be placed for protection of the neutralconductor. TemDin2 4 pole MCB’s have integral neutral pole protection and offers adequate protection against overloaded neutral conductors, when phase imbalance conditions are present. Commercial installations such as hotels, banks and public buildings are often subject to high neutralcurrents via equipment consuming non-linear loads and also require protection to be present in the neutral line.

1p 2p 3p 4p
The use of MCBs in special conditions
The breaking capacity of the breaker is also affected. The breaking capacity is maintained in 6kA (for the range DS06) and in 10kA (for the range DH06)for circuits with a constant time L/R = 0.015 sec., but bearing in mind the following table that indicates the number of poles that should participate inthe break.
The breaker poles distribution among the polarities depends on the type of system. According to the earth location, it should be analyzed the mostunfavourable fault that requires a larger number of poles in series for the short circuit voltage range that the table indicates. After that, apply the breakerwith the necessary number of poles.
When the source has a polarity put to earth, a supplementary pole in the said polarity can be used in order to carry out the load isolation.
Examples of different system types and faults (A, B or C) that cause consequences:
Example: Say, a source of 120V
Case 1) according to the table, 3 poles in series for the A and B fault are required. A 3-pole breaker in series should be put in the positive polarity ora 4-pole breaker with the fourth pole in the negative polarity to assure the isolation.
Case 2) 3 poles in series for the defect A are required (120V short circuit voltage) or 2 poles in series for the faults B or C (60V short circuit voltage) ineach polarity. In such a way that with a 4-pole breaker with 2 poles in series in each polarity the most unfavourable case is covered.
Case 3) 3 poles in series are required for the fault A. A 3-pole breaker in series in any polarity is required or 2 in one and the other pole in the otherpolarity.

Technical characteristics for accessories YDCircuit protection
Accessories for DS and DH series
Up to three accessories can be clipped together onthe left hand side of a breaker.
1. Under voltage release YDU2. Shunt trip YDS
3. Auxiliary contact and remote contact status indicator YD4. Breaker DS or DH
NOTE: Make sure that break out plate ‘A’ is removed and the dollies of both the auxiliary device and associated breaker are in the OFF positionbefore clipping them together.
The Under Voltage Trip release hastwo terminals, D1 and D2, betweenwhich it must be applied a voltage>=0.55Ue (+/-10%).
On the central-top hand of the frontalside there is a time delay functionpotentiometer that allows a delay ofup 300msec. User can manage it witha small size flat-end screwdriver.
Test device
On the low-left hand of the frontal side there is a test lever allowing11-13 contacts to be checked without tripping the main breaker.
With the main breaker in ON position by pushing the test lever fromthe bottom to the top, you can verify if contacts 11-13 open.
Shunt Trip is a main circuit breaker accessory that allows remote open-ing. There is a magnetic relay that when the coil is energized acts overits mechanism and it trips the main breaker.
There are 3 different terminals C1, C2 and 12
It is only possible to energize the relay(terminals C1 and C2) when the mainbreaker and the SHT are in ON position. There is a protection switch that after therelay is energized, the internal mechanism
trips it and the relay circuit becomes open(see diagram).
There is also, an auxiliary contact 12-C1that allows to show the status of SHT andthe main breaker.
Shunt trip YDS Undervoltage release YDU

AUXILIARY operational mode
When the main breaker changes position (ON/OFF), either manually or because and automatictripping, always auxiliary contacts also change position.
When the main breaker is in ON position, auxiliary contacts 11-12 are in NO position, andauxiliary contacts 11-13 are in NC position.
When the main breaker is in OFF position, auxiliary contacts 11-12 are in NC position, andauxiliary contacts 11-13 are in NO position.
AUX/AL
There are 2 different operational mo-des. On the frontal side there is a shaftwith a cam that selects each functionmode (see picture). It must be used asmall size flat-end screwdriver. To be
fitted on the left side.AUX AL
ALARM operational mode
When the main breaker is in ON position, auxiliary contacts 11-12 are in NOposition, and auxiliary contacts 11-13 are in NC position.
When the main breaker is from ON position to OFF position manually changed, auxiliary contacts do not change position.
When the main breaker changes from ON position to OFF position, becausean automatic tripping, auxiliary contacts change position and there is a trippingindicator on the frontal side that shows red colour.
In this case auxiliary contacts 11-12 and 11-13 move to NC and NO positionrespectively.

Type Ai
High immunity to nuisance trippingElectric equipment incorporates more and more electronic components
which causes nuisance tripping to the conventional 30mA RCD’s type
A or AC (always in the most critical moment like weekends, areas with
no people presence…) due to overvoltages or high frequency currents
produced by atmospheric disturbances, lighting equipment (electronic
balasters), computers, appliances, connections to long cables which
induce a high capacity to ground, etc.
Some times the lter incorporated on the standard RCD’s type A or ACwhich are protected to prevent nuisance tripping against peak currents
up to 250A 8/20 μs, does not avoid 100% unwanted tripping.
Installations with lighting equipment incorporating electronicbalasters or computers. The most typical problem in these installations is the tripping of the RCD
when switching the equipment ON-OFF. It is recommended that, in
case several devices are installed in the same line, the sum of all leak-
ages shall not exceed 1/3 lDn since any disturbance in the line can trip
the RCD. For this kind of installation it is recommended either to split up
circuits or use RCD’s type Ai.
RCD’s type Ai have a tripping characteristic according to EN 61008/61009.

Type S SRCD’s type A or AC have instantaneous tripping. In order to providefull people protection in vertical installation with more than one circuit,as well as to ensure the service in the installation in case of earthleakage in one of the circuits or to avoid unwanted tripping because ofharmonics, high connection currents due to the use of motors, reactiveloads, or variable speed drives, we need to use selective RCD’s at thetop of the installation.
Any RCD type S is selective to any other instantaneous RCD installeddownstream with lower sensitivity.
1. Selective type RCCB’s.2. Standard type RCCB’s.

Command and Control RCCB with self-reclosing system ZFR
ZFR Series
Operation modea) After a switch-off due to a residual current fault or a manual action,
the RCCB is automatically reclosed once the period of time between
successive reclosing actions has passed. It can also be reclosed by
means of an external electric command applied to (LI).
b) The manual switch (2) (yellow lever) can be locked with a padlock(6mm passing hole) at the position ON (I) or OFF (O). Fasten the
padlock through the hole (3).
- If the manual switch (2) is locked at the position I, then the ZFR is
ready for its regular use.
- If the manual switch (2) is locked at the position O, then the ZFR
is blocked and neither manual nor automatic reclosing actions are
allowed.
- The switch (2) (yellow lever) in the O position causes the internal
counter of reclosing attempts to be reset to zero - In case of switch lock, lower the yellow lever and put it up back
again.
Before executing any manipulation over the installation placeddownstream the ZFR unit, the self-reclosing ability must be
disabled by pulling down the manual switch (yellow lever).
c) ZFR type sets are equipped with a group of additional micro-switches
(H) which indicate the position of the RCCB (switched on or off)
regardless the cause of the trip (terminals No. 11, 12 and 14).

T e c h n i c a l D a t aSurge arresters TMModular Protection
Protection against transient currents
Transients with high energy and short duration (<50ms) are the mostdangerous and destructive problems in distribution lines -low energyvoltage variations, electromagnetic noise, harmonics, power supplyinterruptions and ground faults-. Its random nature, short duration andhigh energy involved make them the most dif cult problem to solve.
Associated to lightning, either direct impact or induction are the most
destructive phenomenon.
Due to these surges or changeover operations, the transients’ origin indistribution lines is increasing and it causes serious cost damages tothe connected equipment. Furthermore, there is the substitution of thetraditional circuits with relay by printed circuits, which are easily affectedbecause of their high sensitivity, typical examples are operative lifereduction, malfunction of electronics’ logic and destruction.
Transient current at 250A (peak current) at point on wave8/20 s (VDE 0664)
Transient current at 200A (peak current) at minimised point onwave 0,5 s-100kHz (pr EN 61.1008)
Applications
Electronic equipment becomes more vulnerable to power disturbanceswith each new generation. Electronic damage, disruption and downtimecan be prevented.
Critical loads needing to be protected, with an increasing number ofelectronic loads are:
· Work stations· Telephone systems· Automated assembly· Medical diagnostic equipment· Industrial machine tools· Electronic gas pumps· Automated integrated controls· TV & radio broadcasting equipments· Telephone & communication equipments· Computers and networks· Domestic ...
Protection zones and surge arrester typesIn practice, it is very convenient to de ne four protection zones in a building.
Zone 0: Area with more risk, not protected. Direct lighting impact, usually occurred on the
external side of a building, with or without lighting conductor.
Zone 1: Part of the building protected by its external walls, normally provided with an earth
metal protection.
Zone 2: Inside either apartments or rooms from the building.
Zone 3: Equipment, protected by their own metal cover, to be directly protected.Zone 0

Supply
There is a suitable surge arrester type for each zone.
Type 1 High protection. Suitable for incoming supply boards with lighting protection, with wave 10/350µs. Residual voltage up to 4kV.
Zone 1
Type 2 Medium protection. Suitable for incoming supply boards without lighting protection and for secondary distr ibution boards in
general. Residual voltage under 1.5kV. Zone 1 and 2
Type 3 Accurate protection. Suitable for secondary boards located away from the distribution boards that feed them or for Category 1
sensitive equipment, with low insulation level. Zone 2 and 3

When electrical distribution systems are TT or TN-S (neutral to ground and protection earth to ground), the surge arresters must be equipped with
phase-neutral and neutral-ground protection.
When electrical distribution systems are TN (neutral to ground and protection earth to neutral) or IT (isolated neutral and protection earth to
ground) must be protected, in addition, with phase-ground protection. To install a protection device –MCB or fuse– upstream of the surge arrester is
advisable. At the supply point, the surge arrester must be installed immediately downstream of the main breaker.
Connection of the Terasaki surge arresters range is very simple
because their internal elements are pre-wired.
