On reflection, these years have witnessed a growth and maturity as our Chapter has evolved. Over 12 years ago, ICAA National contacted Cliff Duch and asked if he would for the 2nd time re-establish the Florida Chapter. Cliff accepted this challenge, became our President and we owe Cliff our gratitude. Cliff was followed as President by David Case, Joseph Cronk, Troy Beasley & Teofilo Victoria. My thanks to you all for the strong foundation that has allowed me as President to build on your accomplishments. Our Board of Directors, comprised of Architects, Interior Designers, Vendors, General Contractors and a Professor of Architecture, all deserve kudos for their role in our Chapter’s growth and success. These awards honor Addison Mizner, an architect whose vision and work have defined and shaped excellence in traditional & classical design as well as craftsmanship. Addison Mizner was an accomplished builder, developer, manufacturer, designer, and a master communicator. Undeniably, an amazing pedigree, and Addison could not conceive that his legacy and Palm Beach would become synonymous with beauty and luxury. We are gathered to celebrate and acknowledge the talents of all who have submitted projects in consideration of an Addison Mizner Medal. Our Chapter received over 40 submissions from acclaimed practitioners of architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, craftsmanship, urbanism and fine arts. To our distinguished Jurists, Elizabeth Moule, Jaime Correa and Stefanos Polyzoides, we thank you for your deliberations in selecting this year’s Addison Mizner Awards recipients. Our Chapter’s mission and our goals take many paths: • Educational Work Shops • On-site Drawing Sessions • Lectures discussing architecture & urbanism of Florida & the Caribbean • Publications & Videos of our Members work across the State of Florida in cities as Coral Gables, St. Augustine, Palm Beach, Naples and the Panhandle • Participation in the cities of our State and our Chapter’s efforts to deliver our mission to their citizens • Palladio program that collaborates with the University of Miami School of Architecture Please join me in welcoming our new board members, Philip McLeish and Greg Palmer. Prior to assuming the role of President and since I have encouraged 4 women to join our Board of Directors. It was also my recommendation to our Board that our next President be a woman. With great pleasure I want to introduce the next ICAA Florida Chapter President, Kristin Kellogg. To Our Sponsors…so many of you are loyal supporters and more importantly have become personal friends, to all a very special thank you. To our new sponsors, thank you & welcome aboard. Again, my thanks for joining us in celebrating and applauding this evenings Addison Mizner Award recipients. Through education, the publication of books, the founding of institutions dedicated to urbanism, and the designs of hundreds of towns in the United States and abroad, Andrés and Lizz have redefined the very idea of what a town, city or community means to us as a society. In theory and in the reality of practice, from the introduction of innovative ideas on affordable housing to the development of form based codes intent on identity of place, their position on the construction of cities, and community building has made evident the manifest resiliency and endurance of humanist principles in the way we build our towns and cities and, by extension, imbued architecture with a new sense of purpose. For these reasons, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Florida Chapter is honored to award Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk the 2021 Addison Mizner Medal under the World Accomplishment category for the promotion of excellence in Classical and Traditional Architecture and Urbanism worldwide. Robert and Daryl Davis have dedicated a lifetime to the promotion and support of the value and virtue of the classical and traditional in the building arts and urbanity in the state of Florida. Leading by example, and against all odds, the founding and development of the town of Seaside in the Florida panhandle in the 1970’s, would demonstrate, concretely and, a new and innovative direction in urban development as a means of place making and the wellbeing of individual and community alike. In this decades long and persistent effort, Robert and Daryl extended a patronage hand to countless architects, builders, craftsmen, gardeners, and designers, within and beyond the state, to practice the principles and precepts of a humanist tradition in the address of our built environment. For these reasons, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Florida Chapter is honored to award Robert and Daryl Davis the 2021 Addison Mizner Medal for their patronage and stewardship in the promotion of excellence in Classical and Traditional Architecture and Urbanism in the state of Florida. Medal of Service Gerald Buxbaum 2020-2022 Richard John University of Miami School of Architecture, Miami, FL Richard John’s research, teaching and publications focus on the theory and practice of the classical tradition, both historical and contemporary. As director of The Prince of Wales’s Institute of Architecture and for the last three decades as a faculty member of the University of Miami School of Architecture, Dr. John has educated thousands of students and professionals on the history and theory of architecture and urbanism. His contributions to pedagogy have extended beyond the classroom and have touched upon every aspect of the teaching of classical and traditional architecture. In addition to the books he has published on Robert Adam and Thomas Gordon Smith, he was for a period of time the editor of The Classicist, the academic journal of The Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America, was the Visiting Harrison Design Scholar at the College of Architecture of The Georgia Institute of Technology and helped launch their new Master of Science in Classical Design and in 2009, he was the Jury Chair for the Shutze Awards, as well as a member of the inaugural 2012 Addison Mizner Award jury from the ICAA Florida Chapter. The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Florida Chapter is honored to present the Addison Mizner Medal for Pedagogy to Dr, Richard John. Under the most difficult of circumstances, from 2020 to 2022 Mr. Gerald Buxbaum served undaunted as president of the Florida Chapter of the ICAA. Through the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian and immediately after, the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic, Gerald consistently demonstrated persistence and perseverance in addressing the workings of the chapter and confronted the rising critical issues with creativity and innovation. Committed thoroughly and without reservation, Gerald guided the chapter across troubled times to the relative safety of the other shore, the sure shore where we find ourselves today. For his critical leadership and stewardship of the ICAA Florida chapter in an hour of need, the 2021 Addison Mizner Medal of Service is awarded to Mr. Gerald Buxbaum.
