NATIoNAL PoLLS
VANDErBILT rECAP¢ The trio of Jarnell Stokes, Jordan McRae and
Trae Golden combined for 43 points as Tennes-see completed a season sweep of Vanderbilt with a 58-46 win at memorial Gym wednesday.
¢ Stokes scored a game-high 17 points and cor-ralled 10 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season and sixth in a row. mcrae (14 points) also added a career-high 11 rebounds for his first-career double-double. Golden had 12 points.
¢ Tennessee picked up its sixth series sweep over Vanderbilt in the last 13 years. The Vols recently swept Vandy in 2001, 2003, 2006, 2009 and 2011. During that span the Commodores swept the Vols just twice: in 2005 and 2010.
¢ The Vols allowed just 46 points, tying for the second-fewest allowed in the Cuonzo Martin.
¢ Tennessee led 40-28 at halftime thanks to Stokes’ 14 points on a 6-of-7 shooting. It was the most points for Stokes in a first half in his career.
¢ The Vols were hot from the floor throughout the first half, shooting 53.3 percent from the field. UT posted its most points in the first half of an SEC game this season and the most since a 47-point
first half vs. Arkansas last year (2/15/12).¢ Tennessee used a 16-4 run spanning five min-
utes to take control of the game building a 35-22 lead with 3:40 left on a pair of Stokes’ free throws.
¢ Vanderbilt was led by Kedren Johnson, who tal-lied 11. The Vols’ held the ‘Dores to .377 shooting from floor and 3-of-14 from 3-point range.
LAST TImE VS KENTUCKy...¢ Tennessee came up short in its bid for the Vols’
first win at rupp Arena since 2006, as Kentucky captured a 75-65 victory on Jan. 15.
¢ Jordan McRae led the Vols in scoring for the fourth game in a row, with 23 points. He became the first Vol since Chris Lofton with four consec-utive games of 20 points or more. Lofton, who sat behind the Vols bench for this game, did it in five games in a row in Jan.-feb. 2008.
¢ The Vols were in foul trouble all night, as both Yemi Makanjuola and Jarnell Stokes fouled out after combining for just six points and eight re-bounds in only 27 total minutes.
¢ Kentucky hit consecutive shots to break a 56-
56 tie as Ryan Harrow laid home the go-ahead bucket. Then Julius Mays canned a 3-pointer from the left wing with 4:58 left in regulation. That gave the Cats a 61-56 lead. mays hit another trey with 4:20 left to put the Cats ahead by six at 64-58, and Kyle Wiltjer followed with two layups and a free throw to put the Cats ahead 69-62 with 1:42 left in the game. Nerlens Noel’s slam dunk with a minute left sealed the win, putting UK ahead by eight at 71-63.
¢ The Vols had a chance to cut the deficit to one possession, as mays was called for a flagrant foul sending Josh Richardson to the foul line, but he missed both free throws with 42.7 seconds left.
Kentucky led 34-31 at halftime, as Archie Goodwin scored the final four points of the half. mcrae had 11 in the first half to lead the Vols, and wiltjer had 10 for UK. Tennessee shot 56 percent in the first half, but did not attempt a free throw.
¢ Kentucky was led by Wiltjer’s 17 points. Noel (12), Harrow (12) and Alex Poythress (10) also scored in double-figures. Mays’ (9 points) pair of late 3-pointers did the Vols in.
mEmorABLE VoL PErformANCES AGAINST THE wILDCATS¢ Chris Lofton reeled off 31 points, Major Wing-
ate scored 12 and C.J. Watson added 10 as No. 11 Tennessee beat Kentucky 75-67 at rupp Arena on feb. 7, 2006.
¢ Beating the wildcats was three times as nice during the 1978-79 season. UT notched program win No. 900 in Lexington on Jan. 20, 66-55, be-fore topping UK 101-84 in Knoxville on feb. 17. Then the Vols won the 1979 SEC Tournament with a 75-69 win over UK in Birmingham, Ala. on march 3. Current Vol Network radio analyst Bert Bertelkamp was UT’s point guard that season.
¢ As Bernard King walked off the court at memo-rial Gym after a deflating 88-82 loss on Jan. 13, 1975, a Kentucky fan flipped a cigarette into the Tennessee legend’s hair. outraged, King vowed he would never lose to Kentucky again. He vigor-ously carried out that promise, finishing his ca-reer 5-1 against the wildcats.
BIG orANGE THorN IN CAL’S SIDE¢ Since UK coach John Calipari returned to the
college game in 2000-01, Tennessee has dealt him five losses. only Louisville has more wins over Calipari-coached teams during that span.

QUALITy LoSSES¢ of the nine teams Tennessee has lost to this
season, six of them are either ranked or receiv-ing votes in the current Associated Press top-25.
¢ Georgetown is ranked No. 15; oklahoma State is ranked No. 17; memphis is ranked No. 22; and Kentucky is ranked No. 25.
¢ Virginia and ole miss (two wins vs UT) are re-ceiving votes in this week’s poll.
mAJor mINUTES¢ Three Tennessee starters played at least 37 min-
utes during UT’s road win at Vandy wednesday.¢ Juniors Jordan McRae and Trae Golden each
logged 39 minutes, while sophomore Jarnell Stokes played 37 minutes.
¢ The trio maximized those minutes, combining for 43 points, 28 rebounds, six assists and six blocks.
VALUING PoSSESSIoNS IS VITAL¢ In Tennessee’s SEC wins, the Vols have a 1.0 as-
sist/turnover ratio and a -0.8 turnover margin.¢ In SEC losses, UT’s assist/turnover margin is cut
in half to 0.6. Likewise, the Vols’ turnover margin drops to -5.0.
¢ Tennessee commits 11.8 turnovers in league wins and 15.3 turnovers in league losses.
GoLDEN SHowING AGGrESSIoN¢ Junior guard Trae Golden has shown a rejuve-
nation since returning from a strained hamstring that sidelined him for two and a half games.
¢ In UT’s last two games, Golden is averaging 14.0 points (second on the team) while shooting 40 percent from the field. He has attempted 14 free throws during that span, making 11 (.786).
¢ At South Carolina last Sunday, he scored 16 points while going 8-for-10 at the free-throw line.
¢ At Vanderbilt wednesday, he totaled 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
¢ Said Golden after UT’s win over the Game-cocks: “I just have to play my game. I’m not a Phil Pressey or any of those guys. I’m myself. As long as I’m aggressive, I’m going to make the best plays. That’s what I try to pride myself on. I’m a scoring point guard, so that’s what I’m go-ing to do.”
SToKES owNS THE GLASS IN SEC PLAy¢ Jarnell Stokes leads the SEC with 9.8 rebounds
per game in league play.¢ His 4.2 offensive rebounds per game in SEC play
stand alone as tops in the conference.¢ Stokes’ rebounding stats are actually better in
SEC play (9.8 rpg) than they were in non-confer-ence games (7.5 rpg).
SIX for SToKES = SUCCESS for VoLS¢ During Jarnell Stokes’ career, UT is 11-1 when he
makes at least six field goals (9-1 this season).
SToKES HAS 10 DoUBLE-DoUBLES¢ Jarnell Stokes has 10 double-doubles this season
— the most among SEC players.¢ Stokes has a streak of six straight double-dou-
bles. The last SEC player to post a streak of six or more was Kentucky’s DeMarcus Cousins in 2010 (seven in a row).
¢ In the last 20 years, no Vol has posted more than 10 double-doubles in a single-season:
Player, Season Dub-Dubs 1. Steve Hamer, 1994-95 10 Jarnell Stokes, 2012-13 103. Jeronne maymon, 2011-12 94. Tobias Harris, 2010-11 8 wayne Chism, 2009-10 8 Brandon Crump, 2003-04 8
SToKES owNS LEAGUE’S BESTrEBoUNDING EfforT THIS SEASoN¢ Jarnell Stokes’ 18-rebound effort against Ala-
bama Jan. 26 in Knoxville is the best single-game rebounding total by an SEC player in a league game this season.
¢ Not only were Stokes’ 18 total rebounds a ca-reer-high, but his eight offensive rebounds were a career-high as well.
THE moNSTEr from mIDwAy¢ Junior wing Jordan McRae leads the team in
scoring with a career-best 13.7 points per game.¢ The Midway, Ga., native’s 16.0-point scoring
average in SEC play ranks fifth in the league.¢ mcrae’s 36.1 minutes played in SEC action rank
first among all league players, and his .413 field-goal percentage in conference play ranks sixth.
mcrAE’s VErSATILITy oN DISPLAy¢ Jordan McRae has played every position but the

“When we stop them on the shot clock, that’s when coach Martin shows the most emotion. I throw a no-look to Jarnell, coach Martin, he don’t care. But when we get a 35, you look over there and he’s screaming and jump-ing around.” - Trae Golden
Cuonzo martin took the Tennessee basketball team on a 10-day, four-game exhibition tour of Italy Aug. 5-15. The tour began in rome and progressed north through florence, Pisa and The republic of San marino before concluding in Como.
The Volunteers plowed through each of their four exhibi-tion opponents en route to a perfect 4-0 record. The com-petition included All-Star Italy (a collection of Italian profes-sional players), the Lithuanian second-division champion BC Atletas, BC Zeta Golubovci from montenegro and Amici del Campetto.
BC Atletas provided the biggest test for Tennessee — the Lithuanian pros defeated Georgia just days before facing the Vols. Atletas also added a victory over Purdue two days after playing UT. Tennessee handed BC Atletas an 82-68 defeat in what would prove to be the Vols’ lowest-scoring game of the tour.
In total, the Big orange boasted an average margin of vic-tory of 49.3 points in its four outings. Twice, in a display of sportsmanship, the Vols requested a running clock during the second half.
In an effort to make the trip an educational opportunity for a team with numerous players who had never traveled abroad, martin called upon UT professor Dr. Robert Bast, who crafted a three-credit course (History 491) appropriately named “renaissance men.” The class met for several on-cam-pus lectures before the trip, preparing the student-athletes for the culture, cities and landmarks they would encounter once they stepped foot on Italian soil.
Highlights of the trip included visits to the roman Colosseum, the ruins of the roman forum, Vati-can City — including St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel — michelangelo’s famous sculpture of David in florence, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the three towers of San marino and a cruise on Lake Como (the first-ever boat ride for four team members).

Ryan Childress, Wayne Chism, John Fields, Melvin Goins, Tony Harris, Michael Hubert, Justin Jackson, Chris Lofton, Steven Pearl, J.P. Prince, Tyler Summitt, Cameron Tatum, C.J. Watson, Tanner Wild and Renaldo Woolridge.¢ Harris, Lofton and watson completed their
degrees using Tennessee’s “renewing Academic Commitment” (rAC) program.¢ The rAC Program enables former student-
athletes who left school early to turn pro in their respective sport return to school in the off-season to work toward their degree requirements while still having access to the resources available to current student-athletes (such as the Thornton Athletics Student Life Center, tutors, etc).
EmPHASIS of THE DAy¢ Prior to every Tennessee practice, Cuonzo
Martin gathers the Vols at midcourt and discusses the “Emphasis of the Day.”¢ The Emphasis of the Day rarely focuses on
basketball-specific skills or strategy, as martin typically uses it as a vehicle for character building and personal development. As such, it has become something that the members of the team look forward to each day.¢ martin typically begins by reading that day’s
“emphasis” aloud. He then asks one or two players to read it aloud before opening a team-wide discussion during which different team members are asked to interpret the meaning in their own words.¢ “Everyday when coach gives the guys the
emphasis of the day, it’s something that really makes them think and become closer as a team,” associate head coach Tracy webster said. “A lot of times, the things that he says really hit home with the guys. It can be about family life, it can be a scripture, it can be a quote from someone, but it’s all geared around `team.’¢ Added webster: “If the guys are having a hard
time understanding the message, he breaks it down for them and makes sure that they do. It’s kind of like prayer before a meal. It’s to help you get off to a good start.¢ A few examples: my desire is that the people who know me the
best respect me the most. Success is not measured by how many people I coach or how many games I win; success is living life with such authentic integrity that those who know me best actually respect me the most. when someone does well, we all do well. when
someone makes a mistake, we all make the mistake. Let’s figure out the best way to constructively help each other. when we are reliable, others know that they
can depend on us. They know that we will make the effort to do our best, whatever the situation might be. They know we won’t run, cower or become paralyzed by fear.

DEVELoPING wELL-roUNDED yoUNG mEN¢ Cuonzo Martin is genuinely just as passionate about the development of his players
off the court as he is about their athletic development. As such, he relies on Marco Harris, the basketball team’s student-athlete welfare coordinator, to conduct year-round seminars that educate the team on topics that will benefit them later in life.
¢ Harris was a two-sport athlete in college (basketball and baseball), and he also is a successful private business owner, operating a pair of Subway franchises.
¢ Harris regularly schedules guest speakers and team seminars focused on topics such as “Dressing for Success,” AIDS awareness, credit score education, how to keep a budget, balance a checkbook and more.
¢ Harris also oversees the team’s community outreach efforts. The team has visited patients at UT medical Center and St. Jude’s Children’s research Hospital and also has assisted with Habitat for Humanity building projects (2011 and 2012), race for the Cure and several other events.
PErSoNAL BrANDING THroUGH SoCIAL mEDIA¢ rather than banning his players from using various social media services, Cuonzo Martin believes in educating them on how to effec-tively use social media as a positive personal branding tool.
mEN’S HooPS HAS woN foUr of UT’sLAST SIX CommUNITy SErVICE AwArDS¢ The Tennessee men’s basketball team has won four of the last six men’s Community Service Team of the year Awards, presented annu-ally at the “Volscars” ceremony.¢ The Volscars (wordplay on “oscars”) is UT’s annual year-end ath-letic awards show.
“Eventually this ball will stop bouncing. So I’ve got to help you find your way in life. And I want you to walk with your head held high and your chest out because you’re a man.” - Cuonzo martin
¢ He and his wife, roberta, have two sons, Joshua and Chase, and a daughter, Addison.
¢ Attended Lincoln High School in East St. Louis, New Hampton Prep School in New Hampshire and the University of Purdue. Lettered at Purdue from 1992-95 and earned his degree in 2000.
¢ won two Big 10 championships at Purdue, scored 1,666 career points and finished his career as the program’s all-time leading 3-point shooter (179 3-pointers made).
¢ Selected 57th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1995 NBA Draft. Played with the Vancouver Grizzlies, milwaukee Bucks, Grand rapids Hoops (CBA) and also starred professionally in Italy.
¢ Developed a malignant tumor between his heart and lungs and was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in November 1997. He underwent his last treatment on April 20, 1998 (now in full remission).
¢ 2012 Blue Ribbon SEC co-Coach of the year and 2011 Ben Jobe National Coach of the year.
¢ High school teammate of LaPhonso Ellis; college teammate of Glenn robinson; instrumental in recruiting Carl Landry, JaJuan Johnson, E’Twaun moore and robbie Hummel to Purdue.
¢ Served as co-chair of the Univeristy of Tennessee’s 2012 “Light The Night walk” to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Blue collar. Smothering defense and imposing physicality are among the mantras accompanying the dawn of the martin Era on rocky Top. However, as his previous teams have proven, those principles do not prohibit the prevalance of a powerful offensive attack. Discipline and effort will lead to productivity on both ends.
