CURRENT VOLS & LADY VOLSWITH UT ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE MARKS
Big Orange NCAA Qualifi ers/Top 20 National-Listers Already qualifi ed for the NCAA Championship meet with the distance medley relay team, senior Chanelle
Price punched her indoor ticket in the 800 meters for the third time in her career with a third-place, 2:04.25 readout at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York City on Feb. 4. It was the fastest indoor 800 time she’s run as a Lady Vol outside the NCAA and SEC meets. The Lady Vol distance medley relay unit earned its way to the NCAA meet on Jan. 27. The tandem of Chanelle
Price, Ellen Wortham, Nijgia Snapp and Brittany Sheff ey turned in a time of 11:02.74 to fi nish second behind Oregon at the Texas A&M Mondo Challenge. That mark met the NCAA auto qualifying standard with the fi fth-fastest mark ever by a UT quartet and the best run in January. Annie Alexander was Tennessee’s fi rst NCAA indoor automatic qualifi er of the 2012 season on Jan. 21, toss-
ing the shot a school-record 58 feet and one inch at the Auburn Invitational. Other Lady Vols ranked in the nation’s top 20 in their respective events are Nijgia Snapp (8th, 800m, 2:05.49),
Ellen Wortham (9th, 400m, 53.49), Brittany Sheff ey (16th, mile, 4:40.28) and the 4x400m relay combo of Ellen Wortham, Brittany Jones, Price and Ruff (17th, 3:38.18). Vols in the national top 20 include Chase Brannon (14th, pole vault, 17-5 1/2) and Matthew Hoty (18th, shot
put, 60-0 1/4). The 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships will be held March 9-10 at the Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa,
Idaho. It features a 200-meter, Mondo surface, banked oval and eight-lane sprint/hurdle straightaway down the middle of the track.
Roster Additions Are Bolstering Vols Tennessee has added two new members to the men’s team this week, one of whom will be competing at the
Akron Invitational this weekend. Arnez Hardnick, a transfer from Grambling, is expected to run the 60- and 200-meter dashes on Saturday.
He has bests of 7.00 and 22.64 in those events and has run 10.79 (100m) and 21.80 (200m) outdoors. Another new addition to the squad is true freshman Antonio Carter. A middle distance/long sprinter, he is
expected to redshirt indoors. He has PRs of 1:53.46 in the 800m and 48.95 in the 400 meters. UT added two freshmen sprinters to the roster in January. Rookies Jamol James and Michael Williams began
competition at the Kentucky Invitational on Jan. 13-14 and are both key contributors to the squad.
Looking Back At The New Balance Collegiate Invitational Chanelle Price automatically qualifi ed for the NCAA meet with a 2:04.25 readout in the 800 meters that ranks
her No. 5 nationally. Teammate Nijgia Snapp ran 2:05.49 and stands No. 8 on that list. Ellen Wortham ran the 400m in a career-best 53.49, moving her to No. 6 all-time at UT and No. 9 in the NCAA. Brittany Sheff ey covered the mile in a personal-best 4:40.28 for the No. 4 UT mark all-time and the No. 16
clocking in the nation this season. Vol rookie Jamol James lowered his 60m PR to 6.74 in taking fi fth in the consolation fi nal.
UT Records This Season For Alexander, Hoty Annie Alexander broke her 2009 Lady Vol indoor school record (57-2) in the shot put with a victorious toss of
58-1 at the Auburn Invitational on Jan. 21. That mark qualifi ed her for NCAAs and gave her the 10th career indoor victory in the shot and second this season. Two weekends in a row Matthew Hoty eclipsed the Vol freshman indoor mark in the shot put. His runner-up
eff ort of 60-0 1/4 at the Auburn Invitational toppled his week-old mark of 58-7 1/2 from the Kentucky Invita-tional and moved him to No. 9 on UT’s all-time indoor performers list in that event.
Vols Sport Three 17-Foot Vaulters Indoors In 2012 UT has three pole vaulters over the bar at 17 feet in 2012. Sophomore Chase Brannon ranks 14th nationally
at 17-5 1/2, while sophomore Tyler Porter and senior Robert Rasnick have cleared 17-0 3/4. Five-time SEC champ Joe Berry has cleared 17-8 1/2 competing unattached this season and will utilize his
fi nal year of outdoor eligibility with the Vols, beginning with the SEC/Big 10 Challenge on March 23.
CollegeSports360.com Honors For Chanelle Price On Jan. 31 Chanelle Price was named to the CollegeSports360.com Primetime Performers Weekly Track & Field Honor
Roll for her victory and meet record in the 800m (2:05.33) and her role as the lead-off leg for UT’s runner-up and NCAA-qualifying distance medley relay unit (11:02.74) at the Texas A&M Mondo Challenge.
SEC and CollegeSports360.com Honors For Tennessee On Jan. 24 Lady Vol senior Annie Alexander picked up two honors on Jan. 24 for her eff ort the previous weekend at the
Auburn Invitational. The senior was named the SEC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week and was included on the CollegeSports360.com Primetime Performers Weekly Track & Field Honor Roll. Alexander was recognized after automatically qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships and breaking
her own UT indoor shot put record with a victorious toss of 58-1 at the Auburn Inv. on Jan. 21. Vol redshirt freshman Matthew Hoty was selected as the SEC Men’s Freshman of the Week for his perfor-
mance in the Auburn Invitational on Jan. 21. For the second weekend in a row, Hoty toppled the UT freshman indoor record in the shot put. He propelled
the ball 60-0 1/4 to take second at the Auburn meet and moved to No. 9 on UT’s all-time indoor performers list in that event.
Nijgia Snapp Named SEC Women’s Runner of the Week on Jan. 17 A 2:08.55 eff ort in the 800 meters earned Nijgia Snapp a victory at the Kentucky Invitational and the nod as
the Jan. 17 SEC Women’s Runner of the Week. Snapp’s time ranked her No. 1 in the SEC and NCAA through that weekend’s slate of competitions. The win at UK was Snapp’s fi rst career triumph in the 800 as a Lady Vol after four runner-up eff orts, including
one at last year’s Kentucky Invitational.

KENTUCKY INVITATIONAL
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Vols opened their season at the Kentucky Invita-tional on Jan. 13-14, picking up three event wins during the weekend at Nutter Field House. The Vols had three winners, includ-ing redshirt freshman Matthew Hoty in the shot put (58-7 1/2), sophomore Chase Brannon in the pole vault (17-5 1/2) and junior Desmond Brown in the long jump (24-4 1/4). Hoty’s mark was a UT freshman indoor record, surpassing Chip Kell’s 1968 mark of 58-7. That mark moved Hoty to No. 12 on UT’s all-time indoor performers list in that event.
Freshman Tyler Anderson was the runner-up to Brown in the long jump (23-2), while freshman Jamol James (6.78, 60m), sophomore Tyler Porter (16-5 1/2, pole vault), junior Chris Bodary (4:10.93, mile), senior Varick Tucker (48.16, 400m) and UT’s 4x400m relay unit of Michael Wil-liams, Jarael Nelvis, Brown and Reg-gie Juin (3:16.50) posted third-place outcomes.
AUBURN INVITATIONAL
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Matthew Hoty wasn’t able to collect his second straight victory in the men’s shot put, but the Vol redshirt freshman did man-age to make history for the second meet in a row. His blast of 60-0 1/4 was good for second place at the Auburn Invita-tional and enabled him to snap his week-old UT freshman record in the process. He fi nished behind only Ste-phen Saenz of Auburn, last year’s SEC Outdoor champion, who had a best of 63-1 1/4 on Saturday. He picked up SEC Freshman of the Week accolades for his work. Vol sophomore Chase Brannon had his second-straight strong eff ort in the pole vault. After winning at Kentucky the previous weekend in a career-best 17-5 1/2, Brannon came back a week later to fi nish second at 17-4 1/2 to Samford’s Michael Seaman (17-8 1/2). Brannon continues to rank second in the SEC this season and now is followed by the league’s No. 4 and 5 vaulters, UT sophomore Tyler Porter and senior Robert Rasnick. They each cleared 17-0 3/4, with Porter register-ing a career best for the second week-end in a row and getting the nod over his teammate for fourth by clearing the bar on one fewer attempt. Chris Bodary added another runner-up eff ort for Tennessee. The junior’s 8:30.66 clocking enabled him to place second in the men’s 3000 meters.
TEXAS A&M MONDO CHALLENGE
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Vols represented the SEC (along with Florida) at the Texas A&M Mondo Chal-
lenge on Jan. 27-28, helping the league tally 164.50 points in a third-place fi n-ish. The Big 12 prevailed with 277.25 points, followed by the Pac-12 (227.25) in second.
Vol pole vaulters Robert Rasnick (16-6), Chase Brannon (16-6) and Tyler Porter (16-1 3/4) posted a one-two-three fi nish for Tennessee and the SEC. Rasnick got the nod because he had fewer missed attempts during the competition.
Vol Matthew Hoty (59-4 3/4) was the runner-up in the men’s shot put, posting the third-straight top-two fi n-ish to start his career.
NEW BALANCE COLLEGIATE INV.
NEW YORK -- For the Vols, it was a week of development and improve-ment at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. Jamol James, a true freshman, re-corded a personal-best time of 6.75 in the prelims of the 60-meter dash and then lowered it to 6.74 to wind up fi fth in the consolation fi nal. With only four meets under his belt, he already ranks as the 13th-best 60m sprinter in a very rich Vol history of speedsters. Redshirt freshman Matthew Hoty wasn’t satisfi ed with his overall series in the shot put, but he continued to land throws in the vicinity of 60 feet. His eff ort of 59-9 was good enough for fifth place in the championship section. In another men’s championship event, junior Desmond Brown pro-duced a leap of 23-10 3/4 to wind up eighth in the long jump. Junior Chris Bodary drew Clark’s praise for his career-best readout in the fi nals of the college men’s mile. His 4:10.38 handiwork earned him an 11th-place outcome, even though he is ticketed for longer races at the conference meet. The Tennessee men also got an eighth-placing showing from sopho-more Chase Brannon in the pole vault. He was once again over the bar at 17 feet, clearing 17-0 3/4.

KENTUCKY INVITATIONAL
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Lady Vols opened their season at the Kentucky Invitational on Jan. 13-14, picking up two event wins during the weekend at Nutter Field House.
Tennessee victors included senior Annie Alexander in the shot put (52-9 1/4) and junior Nijgia Snapp in the 800 meters (2:08.55).
The win at UK was Snapp’s fi rst ca-reer triumph in the 800 as a Lady Vol after four runner-up eff orts, including one at last year’s Kentucky Invitation-al. That eff ort, which was the top time in the nation through the weekend, earned her the nod as the Jan. 17 SEC Women’s Runner of the Week.
Junior Jessie Harrison posted a runner-up eff ort for the Big Orange in the weight throw with a toss of 59-2, while senior Chanelle Price crossed the line third in the mile run at 4:47.47.
AUBURN INVITATIONAL
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Lady Vols netted their fi rst NCAA qualifi er of the campaign and pocketed a school record and victory, as they closed out their stay at the Auburn Invitational. Annie Alexander became Ten-nessee’s fi rst national qualifi er of the 2012 season, unleashing a blast of 58 feet, one inch in the shot put to punch her ticket to the NCAA Indoor meet in Nampa, Idaho, on March 9-10. The measurement, which came on her third throw of the competition, broke her 2009 indoor school record of 57-2, set at the NCAA meet that year. For her handy work, Alexander was named the SEC Field Event Athlete of the Week and was chosen for the CollegeSports360.com Primetime Performers Weekly Track & Field Honor Roll. Senior Chanelle Price made her fi rst season appearance in the women’s 800m a good one, collecting the ninth indoor victory of her career in that event with a 2:06.41 readout to edge former UT standout Kimarra McDonald (2:06.52). Price’s mark, the best indoor debut of her career, moved her to the top of the NCAA list at this point in the season.
TEXAS A&M MONDO CHALLENGE
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Lady Vols represented the SEC (along with Florida) at the Texas A&M Mondo Challenge on Jan. 27-28, helping the league win the women’s competition over the Pac-12 and Big 12 with 216 points. The Big 12 was second with 214, followed by the Pac-12 at 178. The Lady Vol DMR fi nished sec-ond but carded an NCAA auto mark in 11:02.74 with Chanelle Price, Ellen Wortham, Nijgia Snapp and Brittany Sheff ey carrying the baton. That time-
was the No. 5 all-time indoor mark by the Lady Vols and the fastest run in January by a UT quartet.Price added a victory in the 800
meters, improving her season best to 2:05.33 and setting a meet record. For her individual and relay performanc-es, she was selected to the College Sports360.com Primetime Performers Weekly Track & Field Honor Roll.
Annie Alexander (55-2 3/4) was the runner-up in the women’s shot put, marking the third-straight top-two eff ort of the season for her.
Kia Jackson added a second-place showing of 19-1 3/4 in the long jump, carding a season-best measurement.
NEW BALANCE COLLEGIATE INV.
NEW YORK -- Senior Chanelle Price gave the Lady Volunteers their third event at the 2012 NCAA In-door Championships, reeling off an automatic-qualifying time of 2:04.25 in the championship division of the women’s 800 meters at the New Bal-ance Collegiate Invitational. Price wound up third behind BYU’s Nachelle Mackie (2:03.56) and Katie Palmer (2:03.79), but she recorded the fastest regular-season 800 time of her UT career. Teammate Nijgia Snapp was sixth, posting a one-and-a-half second career best of 2:05.49. Brittany Sheffey came up a little more than three seconds shy of auto qualifying in the mile, but she still put together a career-best time of 4:40.28 to cross the line second. That time moved her to number four on UT’s all-time performers list in that event and put her in a position that J.J. Clark believes will make her a strong candi-date for an NCAA bid. Ellen Wortham also turned in a fi ne showing in the women’s championship division of the 400 meters. The senior rolled to a career-best readout of 53.49 to take fourth place against a talented fi eld. Her eff ort moved her to No. 6 on UT’s all-time performers list. Senior Annie Alexander posted her fourth top-two shot put fi nish of the season, stretching the tape measure to 55 feet, 10 1/2 inches with her fi fth throw to take second in the women’s championship division.
