CHELSEA KNOTTS EARNS UT TORCHBEARER AWARD
Chelsea Knotts, a senior member of the women’s track & fi eld and cross country teams, became the 24th athlete in University of Tennes-see history, the fourth Lady Vol and third track & fi eld athlete ever to earn The Torchbearer Award. She and six other honorees were announced as recipients of the prestigious award at the Chan-cellor’s Honors Banquet on Monday night at the Carolyn P. Brown Memorial University Center.
According to the Chancellor’s Honors web-site, The Torchbearer is the highest student honor conferred by the University of Tennessee. It is awarded for academic achievement and outstanding commitment to others as demon-strated by the student’s various activities and signifi cant contributions to the university and the community. Torchbearers are seniors who have served their Alma Mater with overall excel-lence.
Students chosen for this award embody the Volunteer spirit, displaying initiative and service in the best interest of both the university and their fellow student. Recognition as a Torch-bearer reminds all students that those who bear the Torch of Enlightenment shadow themselves to give light to others.
Knotts, a native of Ripley, W.Va., is fi nishing her degree in biochemistry, cellular and molecu-lar biology and owns a 3.89 grade point average. She is a member of the inaugural Haslam Schol-ars Program, the sole endorsed candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship and a Robert C. Byrd and National Merit Scholarship recipient. A four-year member of UT’s cross country and track & fi eld teams, she has made the SEC Academic Honor Roll three times.
Perhaps most noteworthy is her leadership of the recent Haslam Scholars Program’s com-munity service project. Knotts led hundreds of UT students in an eff ort to raise funds to end chronic homelessness, particularly in the Fort Sanders neighborhood. She began a running group for homeless men and women, organized a 5K benefi t run, and regularly befriends people who are without shelter and stability. She possesses a level of empathy and determination rarely seen.
“Since Chelsea joined our team, she’s always given to others, whether it’s in recruiting, hosting events at her house for our team or helping out at the track when she was hurt and couldn’t com-pete,” UT Director of Track & Field/Cross Country J.J. Clark said. “Her character is unquestioned. She’s done a conglomeration of community ser-vice projects for the homeless and other entities, including putting on a road race and giving the proceeds to a homeless ministry.
“She is always giving to others, and she’s obviously a very intelligent young lady, as she is a Rhodes Scholar candidate. She’s just a very, very good person with wonderful character. She certainly has added to the character and substance of our team, campus and city during her time in Knoxville.”

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Vols represented the SEC (along with Florida) at the Texas A&M Mondo Challenge on Jan. 27-28, helping the league tally 164.50 points in a third-place fi nish. The Big 12 prevailed with 277.25 points, followed by the Pac-12 (227.25) in second.
Vol pole vaulters Robert Rasnick (16-6), Chase Brannon (16-6) and Tyler Porter (16-1 3/4) posted a one-two-three fi nish for Tennes-see and the SEC. Rasnick got the nod because he had fewer missed attempts during the competition.
Vol Matthew Hoty (59-4 3/4) was the runner-up in the men’s shot put, posting the third-straight top-two fi nish to start his career.
NEW BALANCE COLLEGIATE INV.
NEW YORK -- For the Vols, it was a week of development and improvement at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. Jamol James, a true freshman, recorded a personal-best time of 6.75 in the prelims of the 60-meter dash and then lowered it to 6.74 to wind up fi fth in the consolation fi nal. With only four meets under his belt, he already ranks as the 13th-best 60m sprinter in a very rich Vol history of speedsters. Redshirt freshman Matthew Hoty wasn’t satisfied with his overall series in the shot put, but he continued to land throws in the vicinity of 60 feet. His eff ort of 59-9 was good enough for fi fth place in the championship section. In another men’s championship event, junior Desmond Brown pro-duced a leap of 23-10 3/4 to wind up eighth in the long jump. Junior Chris Bodary drew Clark’s praise for his career-best readout in the fi nals of the college men’s mile. His 4:10.38 handiwork earned him an 11th-place outcome, even though he is ticketed for longer races at the conference meet. The Tennessee men also got an eighth-placing showing from sophomore Chase Brannon in the pole vault. He was once again over the bar at 17 feet, clearing 17-0 3/4.
AKRON INVITATIONAL
AKRON, Ohio -- The Tennessee men’s track & fi eld team got some good work in and won three events on Feb. 11 at the Akron Invitational. The Vols dominated the sprints, with freshman Jamol James win-ning the 60m dash in a career-best reading of 6.72 to move to No. 12 on UT’s all-time performers list in that event. Sophomore Jarael Nelvis, mean-while, seized the 200 crown, cover-ing the distance in 21.44 as he and James won their fi rst events as Vols. Junior Arnez Hardnick, a transfer from Grambling, was third in the 200 and fourth in the 60, carding personal records of 21.97 and 6.93, respectively. As he did in the first meet of the season at the Kentucky Invita-tional, Vol freshman Matthew Hoty won the shot put competition. Hoty collected his second win as a Vol with a blast of 57-11 3/4.
SEC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Vols picked up a trio of third-place fi n-ishes and posted a seventh-place team outcome with 40.50 points at the SEC Indoor Championships, Feb. 24-26. VA. TECH FINAL QUALIFIER
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Sopho-more Chase Brannon improved his NCAA stock in the pole vault, clearing a career-best height of 17-8 1/4 to finish second at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifi er. The mark boosted him to No. 13 nationally on the NCAA descend-ing order list and to No. 9 on UT’s all-time performers chart. Freshman sprinter Jamol James took a crack at moving up the NCAA list in the 60-meter dash, but a minor leg injury prevented him from fi nishing his prelim race.

Tennessee victors included senior Annie Alexander in the shot put (52-9 1/4) and junior Nijgia Snapp in the 800 meters (2:08.55).
The win at UK was Snapp’s fi rst career triumph in the 800 as a Lady Vol after four runner-up eff orts, in-cluding one at last year’s Kentucky Invitational. That eff ort, which was the top time in the nation through the weekend, earned her the nod as the Jan. 17 SEC Women’s Runner of the Week.
Junior Jessie Harrison posted a runner-up eff ort for the Big Orange in the weight throw with a toss of 59-2, while senior Chanelle Price crossed the line third in the mile run at 4:47.47.

TENNESSEE CHALLENGE
KNOXVILLE-- The Lady Vols took advantage of their fi rst home ap-pearance of the season, rolling up 10 event victories on April 7 at the Tennessee Challenge at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium. Those wins were headlined by national-caliber marks in the 800 meters by senior Chanelle Price (2:03.36), the shot put (54-6) by se-nior Annie Alexander and the 1500 meters (4:21.32) by senior Brittany Sheffey. Alexander also added a runner-up mark in the discus (181-4) that moved her into the top fi ve nationally. In addition to the impressive
middle distance and throws marks by the Lady Vols, the sprint corps collaborated for the remaining seven wins for Tennessee. Senior Brittany Jones (23.51), junior Martinique Oc-tave (24.08) and senior Ashley Harris (24.36) went 1-2-3 in the 200 meters in one of the most dominant displays of the afternoon. She earned it by winning the 400m hurdles in a meet-record and NCAA-leading time of 55.93, taking the long jump and running on UT’s victorious 4x400m relay. The Lady Vols also won the Show-case 1500m, 100m and 4x400m relay as well as the Invitational discus and open 200m and 4x800m relay. Annie Alexander’s triumph in the discus was her fourth at the Sea Ray Relays and gave her six wins at the meet, including two in the shot put.
