when he tossed a three-hit, seven-inning shutout. In that game he struck out nine and was named OVC Pitcher of the Week for his performance. Over his last five games of the regular season, Henry was 5-0 with a 2.47 E.R.A. with each of those games coming against OVC foes. During that stretch of 32.2 innings, he al-lowed nine earned runs and struck out 36 batters. Henry is the second Tech pitcher to be named OVC Pitcher of the Year since the award was first handed out in 1992 (Mark Maberry in 1997 was the other). The baseball highway didn’t end for Henry with the conclusion of his supremely successful 2010 season at Tech though. The senior out of Knox-ville, Tenn. has since signed with the Pensacola Pelicans of the American Association, one of the elite pro-ball leagues in the country. Now in his seventh season at Tennessee Tech, Bragga becomes just the second Tennessee Tech skipper to be named OVC Coach of the Year. He joins legendary coach David Mays who took home the honor five times during his career, with the last honor
coming in 1997 (Mays will fittingly be inducted into the OVC Hall of Fame this June). The team also collectively earned the OVC Sportsmanship Award for the first time since the inception of the award in August of 2005. Voted on by the student-athletes and coaches of the respective sports, the team awards are bestowed upon the Conference squads deemed to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical behavior as outlined by the OVC and NCAA. Included in the areas for evaluation are the conduct of student-athletes, coaches, staff and administrators and fans. Juniors Chad Oberacker and AJ Kirby-Jones also combined for nine All-America teams for Tech, a
Lee Henry was the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year and skipper Matt Bragga was voted the league’s Coach of the Year, two of the top honors announced follow-ing the 2010 regular season, as voted upon by league head coaches and sports information directors. Henry was also one of five Gold-en Eagle players included on the all-OVC teams. He was a first-team selection along with designated hit-ter A.J. Kirby-Jones and outfielder/pitcher Chad Oberacker. Tristan Archer and Austin Wulf were named to the OVC All-Freshman team. In helping Tennessee Tech to its seventh OVC regular season cham-pionship, Henry was dominant on the mound, leading the OVC in ERA (2.77, 0.59 points better than second place), opponent batting average (.220) and shutouts (1), while rank-ing second in strikeouts per nine in-nings (9.61) and complete games (3). In 14 total appearances (11 starts), Henry compiled a 6-3 record and struck out 73 batters while only is-suing 33 walks. His best game of the season came against Eastern Illinois,
2010 Season in Review
The finale of the 2010 season marked another dominant season for the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, as the team finished in first place after an exciting year of regular season play and collected a multitude of honors and ac-colades, both collectively and on behalf of individual players. Picked third in 2010 pre-season OVC poll, Tech put togeth-er a 14-6 conference record, which included a streak of 11 straight conference victories, culminating in a sweep of then-first place Rac-ers of Murray State in Bush Stadi-um, where the Golden Eagle team batted a combined .371 against the Racers on the series, going 39 for 105 with an outstanding 11 home runs over three games. Six different Golden Eagles homered in the series finale, an 11-1 victory that secured the 2010 OVC Cham-pionship and No. 1 seed for the OVC Tournament for Tech. It was a victory that marked the seventh regular season title for the Golden Eagles and first since 1997 (when they were co-champions). It was the first outright, non-divisional title for the program since 1956. The Golden Eagles went on to complete the season sweep of the Rac-ers with a 15-6 win in game three of the OVC Tourna-ment in Jackson, Tenn. Overall, Tennessee Tech won 14 of its final 15 OVC games during the season. Includ-ing post-season play, the team finished with a record of 31-25 and the program recorded its third-straight 30-win season, something that has never happened in program history. feat in and of itself in that the pro-gram had not seen more than one All-American in a single decade, let alone in a single year. Couple that with the fact that both play-ers were named to multiple teams, and the accomplishment is even more noteworthy. The pair was named to a variety of first, second and third teams by Ping! Baseball, the American Baseball Coaches Association, the Pro-Line National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Asso-ciation, Baseball America and Lou-isville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball News. Only seven teams in the nation were able to boast mul-tiple first and/or second team ABCA All-Americans for the 2010 season. The other six programs were ranked within the top ten in the NCAA. Tech’s two honorees places TTU amongst the ranks of no.1 Virginia, no. 2 Arizona State, no. 3 Texas, no. 6 TCU, no. 7 Cal State-Fullerton and no. 9 Louisville. Oberacker led the OVC and ranked in the top five nationally in batting average (.455) while register-ing 101 hits, 28 doubles (which also ranked in the top five nationally), 65 RBI and 14 stolen bases. Kirby-Jones appeared on the All-OVC first-team for the first time in his career (after being an All-Freshman selection two years ago and a second-team pick last season). Kirby-Jones smashed 26 home runs during the season while also drawing 55 walks (a mark that was second nationally). “AJKJ” hit .378 with 71 hits, 58 runs, 16 doubles and 66 RBI. The two standouts - who were named Tennessee Tech’s Co-Male Athlete’s of the Year - were also joined by two of their teammates in another category, as Kirby-Jones, Oberacker, junior Stephen Pryor and senior Adam Liberatore were selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft. Kirby-Jones signed with the
Vancouver Canadians, a Class-A Af-filiate of the Oakland Athletics, and was named the team’s MVP after a successful summer season where he set the franchise record for most home runs in a debut season with 14. The primary closer for Tech standing 6’4” and weighing in at 235 lbs, Pryor - a 5th round selec-tion of the Seattle Mariners - led the Golden Eagle pitching staff in 2010 with 24 appearances and four saves, and maintained a 4-4 record with a 5.71 ERA through-out the course of the season. He struck out 75 batters in 41 total innings, ranking fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference in strikeouts, and held opponents to a .224 batting average. With the ability to pitch at a speeds lingering around 94 mph and reaching velocities as high as 96 mph, Pryor holds the single season record at Tech for strikeouts per nine innings with 16.46, while his four saves in a single season ranks third in the record books. Of the 35 hits allowed in 2010, only 13 of them were for extra bases. Liberatore finished his
career with a 6.34 earned run aver-age, having allowed 116 earned runs of 133 runs on 222 hits. He finished his career with a 12-10 record, starting in 29 of his 50 career appearances and pitching a total of 164.2 innings. He held his opponents to a .318 batting aver-age over the course of his career and struck out 155 total batters, 74 alone in the 2010 season. He bat-tled back from a season-ending elbow injury in 2009 to lead the Golden Eagles in games started with 13 this season, throughout which he held up a 5.30 ERA and recorded a 6-4 record. Prior to his injury in 2009, he went 2-0 in his first two starts of the season with a 0.00 ERA, pitching a total of 17
innings and striking out 21 batters, allowing only six walks. With such leadership and team camaraderie, it’s not surprising that the Golden Eagles took the momen-tum as regular season champions into the post-season, where they went 2-2 in the OVC Tournament, falling to Jacksonville State twice in the double elimination tournament in Jackson, Tenn.

The success of Tennessee Tech University’s athletic teams is tied closely to the academic progress of each student-athlete, and the academic performance of each Tech student-athlete is closely monitored by the coaching staff as well as an experienced staff in Academic Services. Tech’s student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom. Each semester, the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll pays tribute to more than 150 students in athletics, including athletes, trainers, managers and cheerleaders, and the overall GPA of the department has climbed steeply in the past seven semesters. Student-athletes are the most visible component of a university, entertaining thousands of fans, students, alumni, family and friends. Their athletic abilities and achievements are a focus for national attention, as athletic events not only bring back faithful alumni, but serve as a welcome mat to the university for potential new stu-dents. Student-athletes devote many hours to practice, conditioning and training in an effort to be the best they can be. These hours are not required by non-athletes in the student body, and these extra demands can compete with academics for the student-athlete’s time and energy. The Tech Athletics Department works to provide help with course content (through tutors and monitored study hours) as well as with time management and study skills and any other academic support services that will allow Tech student-athletes to maximize their academic potential.

Academic All-America
The “WIN” program: Work Intensely NowThe WIN Program was implemented in the fall semester of 2004 to pro-vide additional support for freshmen and student-athletes whose general academic progress places them at risk for maintaining eligibility and graduating. The program involves the student-athlete, coach(es), academic advisor, tutors, and others to build academic skills for success. Partici-pation in the program is primarily based on grades, and coaches or the academic advisor may recommend additional participation at any time. All incoming freshmen meet at least one time per week with their coach to discuss academic progress and needs as well as time management and study skill techniques. Other aspects of the program include monitored study hours, tutoring, and study skills workshops.

The Tennessee Tech strength and conditioning program is a blend of science, technology, nutrition and one-on-one attention to each athlete. Golden Eagle student-athletes make a year-round
commitment to physically preparing to play their sport at the highest level. At TTU, a program is tailored to match each student-athlete’s individual needs with the sport-specific physical demands. This includes strength, speed, power, agility, flexibility, metabolic conditioning and motivation. This combination allows Tennessee Tech’s student-athletes to better reach their specific goals. Another
major focus of the strength staff is the development of sport-specific speed, agility and conditioning.
CHIP PUGH Head Strength and Conditioning Coach
Chip Pugh is in his fifth year as Tennessee Tech’s strength and conditioning head coach. He oversees the physical development of student-athletes in all 14 sports, provid-ing support in building toward championships. Pugh served three years in the same position at Winthrop University where he cre-ated and developed a highly successful strength and conditioning program that helped win 12 conference championships. An alumnus of Ohio University, he was an offensive lineman on the football team while earning a bachelor’s degree in Sport Industry and a master’s degree in Physical Edu-cation.
Pugh believes that the qualities that athletes can develop in strength and conditioning will not only aid in their athletic development, but will also help them build quality character components necessary for life. A native of Parkersburg, W. Va., he began his coaching career at his alma mater as an assistant strength and conditioning coach where he primarily worked with men’s and women’s track, men’s and women’s swimming, and women’s soccer. He also assisted coach Ethan Reeve, currently the head strength and conditioning coach at Wake For-
est, with football while at Ohio. After leaving Ohio University he became the head
strength and conditioning coach for football at Marietta (Ohio) College, where he also worked as an assistant foot-ball coach. Additionally, during his two years at Marietta College he also served as a campus minister to the college.
Pugh is a certified member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches’ Association. He also holds the Club Coach certification through USA Weightlifting.
He is a Level-I certified CrossFit trainer and conducts personal training classes open to the public using the CrossFit methods.

Development of Core StrengthImagine the body is a 3-link chain with the head and arms being one link, the torso.trunk being the second link and the legs being the third link. If the core link (trunk/torso) is weak or inflexible, there is little chance of maximizing potential because all body movement stems from the core. Train using ground-based, multi-joint lifting versus machine lifting Most athletes participate in stand up power sports using many muscle groups at once. The emphasis of training should be on total body athleticism and flexibility rather than having body weight supported by a machine and forcing isolation of just one muscle group. By incorporating ground-based lifts and exercises that focus on the total body, the athlete becomes more prepared to use their whole body in sport skills.
Train for Power (which results in increased speed)Power = (Mass Moved x Distance)/time. The less time it takes to move a mass a certain distance, the higher the output. As seen in the above formula, an increase in speed of move-ments results in an increase in power. Train AthleticismMany factors are included in athleticism: strength, power, speed, agility, flexibility, coordination, fitness level and mental toughness are just a few. It is the goal to maximize an athlete’s overall athleticism.
Train as a Team When teams train together, it provides another opportunity to develop chemistry, teamwork, leadership skills and a com-petitive environment. Within this competitive environment, teams can work on mental toughness, attacking the weights and maintaining a positive attitude. By enabling athletes to work on these things as a team, it helps to promote a stron-ger sense of unity, therefore making it harder to “fold” under pressure.
Make workouts short and intenseThere are many philosophies on how to get athletes stron-ger, faster and more flexible. But, when combined, these philosophies have the same three underlying principles: a) The workouts should be highly organized b) The workouts should be short in duration c) The workouts should be extremely intense
The following are recommendations for athletes concerning days and times of strength trainig (including warmups): * In-season: 3 days / week; 30-40 minutes/workout * Post-season: 3-4 days / week; 45-60 minutes/workout * Pre-season: 4 days / week; 50-60 minutes/workout

Heading into his 29th year on the Tennessee Tech athletics staff, Rob Schab-ert is assistant athletics director for sports information and broadcasting. He joined the Tech staff on Sept. 8, 1982, and has been going full-speed ever since, working not only in publicizing Tech's student-athletes and staff but also in promotions and marketing for the athletics department. In September 2008 he was inducted into the Hall of Distinction at Minne-sota State University (Mankato). An active member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), he has attended the organization's annual workshop in 29 of his 33 years in the profession. He has served on numerous CoSIDA committees, including Ethics, Academic All-America and Writing, and he currently serves on the Olympic Liaison Committee. In 2004, he was voted winner of the university's Outstanding Professional Award, and in July 2005 was promoted to his current title. A tireless worker, Schabert has won dozens of national publications and writing awards, including "Best in the Nation" from USA Volleyball for his annual media guide six times. Schabert, 54, has established several programs within the department. He created the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in 1987 and initiated the President's Awards program in 1991. He also established the Woman of the Year/Man of the Year awards along with the Outstanding Male and Female Athlete awards. He is active in the TTU Sports Hall of Fame selection process and serves as the emcee of the annual Hall of Fame Dinner. Schabert has promoted the selection of numerous Tech Academic All-Americans and is extremely active in promoting both the academic and athletic accomplishments of Tech's student-athletes. Another wing of his operation is the day-to-day production and operations of the vast Tech athletics web site, TTUsports.com. Rob and his staff also serve as the hosts to all media attending athletics events on campus. Over the past several years, many of the interns who have worked for Schabert have moved into full-time positions in the Sports Information profession at a wide variety of colleges and universities, including Appalachian State, UAB, Xavier, Idaho and Texas State. A Minnesota native who learned the trade under the guidance of his father, Bob (a long-time Minnesota Sportswriter), Rob earned his bachelor's degree in mass communications from St. Cloud (Minn.) State University in 1977, spent one year in the Minnesota Twins public relations office, and was SID for five years at Mankato State University. He was a charter member of the St. Cloud chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the Society of Professional Journalist. In 2002, Rob was a volunteer with the Salt Lake Olympic Committee as a member of the Press Operations staff. Rob and his wife, Joan, have two grown children who are also in the busi-ness -- Matt (assistant SID at Morehead State) and Kristen (U.S. Army public affairs in Heidelberg, Germany). They also have one grandson, Jacob.
Nick Burns, 25, joined the Tennessee Tech Sports Information staff in July. He will serve as the primary contact for volleyball, women's basketball and softball, and the secondary contact for tennis and track. A native of Bloomington, Minn., he is a 2007 graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications with a public relations emphasis. As an undergraduate, Burns was a reporter for the campus newspaper covering the men's and women's track and field and golf teams and writing feature stories. He also worked in the school’s athletic communications office helping with gameday services and writing. From 2007 to 2009, Burns was a graduate assistant in the MSU athletic communications office, serving as the primary contact for the volleyball and women's basketball teams for two seasons, and the softball, men's and women's track and field and tennis teams for one season. He produced publications, was the in-game statistician for all Maverick home events, updated the athletic website and filled in as guest host of the weekly Mav-erick Magazine radio show. During the 2008-09 women's basketball season, Burns served as the primary contact when the team won the Division II NCAA National Championship in San Antonio. He has also worked at the WCHA Final Five.
Kate Nicewicz, 23, joined the Tech Sports Information staff in April. A native of Sauquoit, N.Y., she graduated from the University of Rochester in May of 2009 with a Bachelors degree in Communications and Marketing. At Rochester, Nicewicz participated in JV and Varsity soccer and worked as an assistant in the Sports Information office. While obtaining her B.A. in Com-munications, Nicewicz participated in an internship with MCLA the Lax Mag beginning in January of 2008, contributing nationally published content in the form of feature articles, team and player profiles, and game recaps. In May of 2008, she traveled to Dallas, Texas to provide live coverage for the 2008 Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) National Tournament. Nicewicz also acted as a senior writer for the sports section of the Campus Times, UR’s campus-wide newspaper. At Tennessee Tech, Nicewicz will han-dle several aspects of media relations for the athletic department, including the production of publications, press releases and human-interest articles. She will provide game coverage and live stats and serve as the primary con-tact for soccer, men’s basketball, and baseball, as well as secondary contact for men’s and women’s golf.
