Lori Cook Sr. State 1st Vice President 6407 Nicklaus Ct Hixson, TN 37343 423-290-4912 [email protected]

Dear Members and Seniors:

Thanks to all those who attend-

ed the State Packet meeting in Murfreesboro! Emily

and Michael Zietz did a wonderful job planning and

executing the meeting! The picnic lunch and activities

at MTSU were fun and interesting for our members

and seniors. I want to thank all those state officers

and committee chairmen who prepared informational

tri-fold boards and brought handouts and visual aids

to promote their committee.

Michael has planned an outstanding program and

project which you can find on page 7 of this edition of

the Liberty Bell. I hope that each society will strive to

meet Michael’s challenge of each society raising

$100 for the state project.

It is with much sadness that I report to you that Sen-

ior State President Jennifer Rowan is stepping down

from her position with T.S.C.A.R. due to serious

health issues. She will remain involved with C.A.R.

and will continue as Pinson Mounds Society Sr. Pres-

ident. Please keep her family in your thoughts and

prayers as she faces chemotherapy and radiation

through 2015.

The annual Bell Ringing on the State Capitol grounds

will be held on Sunday, September 21st. We will

have a CAR meeting for all societies to participate in.

Your Sr. Society President will receive details about

this meeting soon.

Hope to see everyone at the Bell Ringing,

Lori Cook

Acting Senior State President

Letters from State President and Senior State President

Michael Zietz State President 2219 Shannon Drive Murfreesboro, TN 37129 615-895-6027 [email protected]

Dear T.S.C.A.R. mem-

bers and Seniors,

Another great quarter has passed for TSCAR,

and I am happy to announce that my State

President’s Project has been going very well.

We have raised nearly enough for half a flight,

so we are just on track, if we continue, to be

able to fund an entire Honor Flight for around

30 veterans. An example fundraiser we had

here in Murfreesboro was at the local farmers’

market on the Saturday before Labor Day. We

invited local veterans to come and speak to an-

yone who stopped or walked by a popular local

coffee shop, set up by a veteran himself. Over

the course of the morning, we were able to

raise nearly $500, enough to fund one veteran’s

trip to D.C.

I look forward to visiting some CAR chapters

around the state in the upcoming months, and

especially look forward to being a guardian on

the first Honor Flight in September, coming up

on the 27th. As always, feel free to contact me

anytime at [email protected].

Until next time,

Michael Zietz

Captain Cornelius Carhart

by Samuel Hood (age 11)

There is a man in history lots of people don’t know about, his name is Cornelius Carhart. He is one of my patriot ancestors. He was born in 1729 in Monmouth County, New Jersey. When he was a young man, he moved to Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

When the Revolutionary War began, Cornelius Carhart went straight into action to help his coun-try. He was named a Captain in the Hunterdon County, New Jersey militia beginning in the year 1775. Lots of men served under him, mostly privates in the New Jersey militia, and his son Rob-ert Carhart. He gave commands to his men and may have carried a sword.

Captain Carhart and the New Jersey militia tried to build a fort on Staten Island before the British landed, but they couldn’t finish it. He fought mostly in the springtime and summer, but sometimes served in the winter. Mostly, the battles in which he fought were in Elizabethtown, Amboy, Staten Island (New York), Sandy Hook and Monmouth in New Jersey. He was fearless because he was always so close to the British on Staten Island that he could see them. He and his troops were also able to see British warships in New York harbor. One they could remember seeing was the HMS Roebuck.

The war ended in 1781. He served throughout the entire war. I admire Cornelius Carhart be-cause he never backed-down or quit.

don militia fought the British.

State Theme and Project– The Greatest Generation

Tennessee Society Children of the Ameri-can Revolution State President’s project for 2014-2015 is to honor The Greatest Generation and beyond. The T.S.C.A.R. is supporting Screaming Eagle Honor Flight by helping promote and fundraise for this wonderful initiative to honor our Veterans.

Screaming Eagle Honor Flight is new Hon-or Flight organization from Clarksville, TN. This organization gives Veterans the op-portunity to visit and experience THEIR memorials in Washington D.C. It provides this service through the generous dona-tions of individuals, organization, business-es, and corporations.

Screaming Eagles Honor Flight is a non-profit or-ganization that provides Veterans, at no cost to them, the opportunity to fly to Washington for the day. A guardian volunteer will fly with each veteran. This organization plans to have its first flight on Sat-urday, September 27, 2014 and to have two flights per year thereafter. If you know a WWII or Korean Veteran who would be interested in going on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to visit his memorial, please contact T.S.C.A.R. State President Michael Zietz at 615.895.6027 or [email protected].

The National Theme for 2014–2015 is

O! Say Can You See. The 2014-2015 National President’s project is to make a donation to the Star-Spangled Flag House in Baltimore, Maryland, in honor of the Star-Spangled Banner’s bicen-tennial. The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House began as the home of Mary Pickersgill, the woman who sewed the Star-Spangled Banner, and has be-come a museum that retells the impact Mary and her flag had on our inde-pendence. The museum attracts nearly 10,000 visitors each year, with 30% of its visitors coming with school groups. Unfortunately, of the ten flags on the grounds of the Flag House, all ten are in need of repair. As this is an expen-sive project and falls outside of restricted exhibit funds, the Flag House has been unable to fix them. This year, the N.S.C.A.R. hopes to raise $20,000 to donate to the Flag House. With our donation, all ten flags can be restored, in-cluding a large Star-Spangled Banner that flies in front of the museum. Our donation will also cover the cost of a recognition marker for the N.S.C.A.R. on the Flag House grounds.

In addition to a donation to the Flag House, this year the N.S.C.A.R. will place an emphasis on learning about our nation’s flag. Local societies are

encouraged to spend time learning flag etiquette and exploring the history of the American flag. Our flag symbolizes freedom and independence, and our societies will pay tribute to it in its bicentennial. Join us as we honor the Ameri-can flag. “O! Say Can You See”, may our flag ever wave.

Sevier Station Society

Clarksville, Tennessee

September 2014

School is back in session and we hope each of you have settled in and are off to a wonderful start. Sevier Station had a wonderful, albeit busy, summer. Derek Clark and his mom, Alicia Clark hit the road in June to attend the Re-gional Meeting in Columbus, Ohio (right). They were able to visit another region, meet the in-coming N.S.C.A.R. officers, and make new friends.

During the summer, our Society always likes to take fun outings. This summer was no exception! In June, we headed to Nashville to tour the recently renovated Ronald McDonald House. After the tour, our Soci-ety donated over 83 pounds of soda tabs, $20.00 worth of paper towels (an item they specifically said their families could use), and over one hun-dred pens, pencils and markers (see picture). After that, our Society headed over to the Bicentennial Mall where we had a picnic lunch, played in the water sprinklers and shopped at the local Farmer’s Market.

In July, we had the oppor-tunity to tour Allendale Farm which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Mrs. Amelia Hartz, grandmother of two of our newest members, and her father, Mr. William Allen Bailey, gave us a wonderful tour of its two historic log homes. We also got to see family antiques, artifacts and in-teresting books and

Page 16: Tennessee Society Children of the American Revolution · PDF fileVOLUME LXI, ISSUE ii The liberty bell Tennessee Society Children of the American Revolution Summer Packet Meeting 1-3

PAGE 16 THE LIBERTY BELL VOLUME LXI , I SSUE I I

interesting books and documents. After our tour, we headed to the fields to see the cows up close and feed their horse. Our day finished with a picnic lunch, yard games and a splash in the pool (see picture)

Our first meeting of the year was held on Au-gust 23, 2014 at the historic L&N Train Station, our new meeting location. As we gathered, we worked on coloring pages which will be part of our U.S. Constitution display table at our Pub-lic Library, 17-23 September. Following our ritual, our new Society President, Derek Clark, announced the 2014-2015 National and State Themes and Projects; reported on what hap-pened at the State Packet Meeting in Murfreesboro; and discussed upcoming events. Derek then introduced our guest speaker, Mrs. Camille Allison, a member of the Captain William Edmiston DAR Chapter and a sign language interpreter at Fort Camp-bell, Kentucky. Mrs. Allison taught our mem-bers how to recite the “Pledge of Allegiance” using sign language. She also brought her son, Noah-a prospective member, to participate in our meeting. We plan to prac-tice our new skill at every meeting for the rest of the year. To thank Mrs. Allison af-terward, our Society presented her with a T.S.C.A.R. State Project lapel pin. While the adults met to talk business, our members had fun decorating flag-shaped cookies and playing games (see picture).

Our next event is to participate in the Captain William Edmiston DAR Super Saturday Social on Septem-ber 13th. Michael Zietz, our T.S.C.A.R President has gra-ciously accepted to be a guest speaker and will present his State Theme and Project to the group. Thanks in advance Michael!
