On His Team’s Qualifi ers For The NCAA Indoor Meet:
“We are developing a group, and I think it only gets stronger from here. I am very happy to see that we have several youngsters going to the NCAA meet. I look for-ward to having the opportunity to develop from here for the next couple of years to put us in a position to shoot for more titles and trophies. We’re in a good spot now to develop on that.
“Last chance meets, a lot of times, aren’t very success-ful, but this one (Va. Tech Final Qualifi er) was. We had people clear heights and run faster than they ever have before, so that is very exciting. her fi rst open 400m race at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships. She made the fi eld by running a 52.99 career best at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifi er on March 3, posting the No. 7 seed time in this meet. Annie Alexander overcame popliteal artery entrapment syndrome and two subsequent surgeries to
return to national prominence and break her own school record in the shot. To improve her strength while growing up in Trinidad & Tobago, Annie Alexander used to
carry water to her house and built her own weights with steel rods and concrete. Chanelle Price was a 2011 fi rst-team Capital One Academic All-American. Pole vaulter Chase Brannon came to Tennessee as a walk-on.
Looking Back At The Virginia Tech Final Qualifi er Senior Ellen Wortham rocketed to a career-best time of 52.99 in the 400 meters to win and post the
No. 8 time in the nation. It also moved her to No. 3 on UT’s all-time indoor performers list. Sophomore Chase Brannon soared over a career-best height of 17-8 1/4 to fi nish second and move
himself into position for an NCAA berth. That mark boosted him to No. 9 on the UT all-time indoor list.
Looking Back At The SEC Indoor Championships The Lady Vols placed fourth in the SEC team standings with 68 points, while the Vols were seventh
with 40.50. The Lady Vol DMR won its sixth-straight SEC title and eighth in the past nine seasons, carding a
facility-record time of 11:12.23. Running on that unit were Chanelle Price, Julia Petree, Nijgia Snapp and Brittany Sheff ey. Annie Alexander won the women’s shot put at 55-11 3/4, marking her second indoor shot crown
and sixth overall SEC title. Chanelle Price (800m) and Ellen Wortham (LJ) posted runner-up fi nishes, while Nijgia Snapp
checked in third in the 800m. Matthew Hoty snapped his own UT freshman record in the shot put, fi nishing third with a toss of
62-3 1/4. Chase Brannon (17-3 3/4) and Robert Rasnick (17-0) fi nished third and fourth in the pole vault. Terry Benson lowered his PR from 8.10 to 7.95 to place third in the 60m hurdles.
SEC Honors First Team: Annie Alexander (SP), Julia Petree (DMR), Chanelle Price (DMR), Brittany Sheff ey (DMR)

UT Records This Season For Alexander, Hoty Annie Alexander broke her 2009 Lady Vol indoor school record (57-2) in the shot put with a victori-
ous toss of 58-1 at the Auburn Inv. on Jan. 21. That mark qualifi ed her for NCAAs and gave career indoor win No. 10. Matthew Hoty improved the UT freshman record in the shot put at three diff erent meets in 2012.
He stretched the tape to 58-7 1/2 at the Kentucky Invitational in his fi rst college meet to snap the 1968 mark of 58-7 set by Chip Kell. A week later, he posted a toss of 60-0 1/4 at the Auburn Invitational. His fi rst three throws at the SEC Indoor Championships all beat that eff ort, as he raised the standard to 62-3 1/4 in taking third at the conference meet and qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
SEC Freshman of the Week Kudos For Jamol James After winning the 60m in a career-best 6.72 seconds at the Akron Invitational, UT rookie Jamol
James was selected as the SEC Men’s Freshman of the Week. That mark moved James to No. 12 on UT’s all-time indoor 60m performers list.
CollegeSports360.com Honors For Chanelle Price On Jan. 31 Chanelle Price was named to the CollegeSports360.com Primetime Performers Weekly Track & Field
Honor Roll for her victory and meet record in the 800m (2:05.33) and her role as the lead-off leg for UT’s runner-up and NCAA-qualifying distance medley relay unit (11:02.74) at the Texas A&M Mondo Chal-lenge.
SEC and CollegeSports360.com Honors For Tennessee On Jan. 24 Lady Vol senior Annie Alexander picked up two honors on Jan. 24 for her eff ort the previous week-
end at the Auburn Invitational. The senior was named the SEC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week and was included on the CollegeSports360.com Primetime Performers Weekly Track & Field Honor Roll. Alexander was recognized after automatically qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships and
breaking her own UT indoor shot put record with a victorious toss of 58-1 at the Auburn Inv. on Jan. 21. Vol redshirt freshman Matthew Hoty was selected as the SEC Men’s Freshman of the Week for his
performance in the Auburn Invitational on Jan. 21. For the second weekend in a row, Hoty toppled the UT freshman indoor record in the shot put.
He propelled the ball 60-0 1/4 to take second at the Auburn meet and moved to No. 9 on UT’s all-time indoor performers list.
Nijgia Snapp Named SEC Women’s Runner of the Week on Jan. 17 A 2:08.55 eff ort in the 800 meters earned Nijgia Snapp a victory at the Kentucky Invitational and the
nod as the Jan. 17 SEC Women’s Runner of the Week. Snapp’s time ranked her No. 1 in the SEC and NCAA through that weekend’s slate of competitions. The win at UK was Snapp’s fi rst career triumph in the 800 as a Lady Vol after four runner-up eff orts,
including one at last year’s Kentucky Invitational.

KENTUCKY INVITATIONAL
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Vols opened their season at the Kentucky Invita-tional on Jan. 13-14, picking up three event wins during the weekend at Nutter Field House. The Vols had three winners, includ-ing redshirt freshman Matthew Hoty in the shot put (58-7 1/2), sophomore Chase Brannon in the pole vault (17-5 1/2) and junior Desmond Brown in the long jump (24-4 1/4). Hoty’s mark was a UT freshman indoor record, surpassing Chip Kell’s 1968 mark of 58-7. That mark moved Hoty to No. 12 on UT’s all-time indoor performers list in that event.
Freshman Tyler Anderson was the runner-up to Brown in the long jump (23-2), while freshman Jamol James (6.78, 60m), sophomore Tyler Porter (16-5 1/2, pole vault), junior Chris Bodary (4:10.93, mile), senior Varick Tucker (48.16, 400m) and UT’s 4x400m relay unit of Michael Wil-liams, Jarael Nelvis, Brown and Reg-gie Juin (3:16.50) posted third-place outcomes.
AUBURN INVITATIONAL
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Matthew Hoty wasn’t able to collect his second straight victory in the men’s shot put, but the Vol redshirt freshman did man-age to make history for the second meet in a row. His blast of 60-0 1/4 was good for second place at the Auburn Invita-tional and enabled him to snap his week-old UT freshman record in the process. He fi nished behind only Ste-phen Saenz of Auburn, last year’s SEC Outdoor champion, who had a best of 63-1 1/4 on Saturday. He picked up SEC Freshman of the Week accolades for his work. Vol sophomore Chase Brannon had his second-straight strong eff ort in the pole vault. After winning at Kentucky the previous weekend in a career-best 17-5 1/2, Brannon came back a week later to fi nish second at 17-4 1/2 to Samford’s Michael Seaman (17-8 1/2). Brannon continues to rank second in the SEC this season and now is followed by the league’s No. 4 and 5 vaulters, UT sophomore Tyler Porter and senior Robert Rasnick. They each cleared 17-0 3/4, with Porter register-ing a career best for the second week-end in a row and getting the nod over his teammate for fourth by clearing the bar on one fewer attempt. Chris Bodary added another runner-up eff ort for Tennessee. The junior’s 8:30.66 clocking enabled him to place second in the men’s 3000 meters.
TEXAS A&M MONDO CHALLENGE
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Vols represented the SEC (along with Florida) at the Texas A&M Mondo Chal-
lenge on Jan. 27-28, helping the league tally 164.50 points in a third-place fi n-ish. The Big 12 prevailed with 277.25 points, followed by the Pac-12 (227.25) in second.
Vol pole vaulters Robert Rasnick (16-6), Chase Brannon (16-6) and Tyler Porter (16-1 3/4) posted a one-two-three fi nish for Tennessee and the SEC. Rasnick got the nod because he had fewer missed attempts during the competition.
Vol Matthew Hoty (59-4 3/4) was the runner-up in the men’s shot put, posting the third-straight top-two fi n-ish to start his career.
NEW BALANCE COLLEGIATE INV.
NEW YORK -- For the Vols, it was a week of development and improve-ment at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. Jamol James, a true freshman, re-corded a personal-best time of 6.75 in the prelims of the 60-meter dash and then lowered it to 6.74 to wind up fi fth in the consolation fi nal. With only four meets under his belt, he already ranks as the 13th-best 60m sprinter in a very rich Vol history of speedsters. Redshirt freshman Matthew Hoty wasn’t satisfi ed with his overall series in the shot put, but he continued to land throws in the vicinity of 60 feet. His eff ort of 59-9 was good enough for fifth place in the championship section. In another men’s championship event, junior Desmond Brown pro-duced a leap of 23-10 3/4 to wind up eighth in the long jump. Junior Chris Bodary drew Clark’s praise for his career-best readout in the fi nals of the college men’s mile. His 4:10.38 handiwork earned him an 11th-place outcome, even though he is ticketed for longer races at the conference meet. The Tennessee men also got an eighth-placing showing from sopho-more Chase Brannon in the pole vault. He was once again over the bar at 17 feet, clearing 17-0 3/4.
AKRON INVITATIONAL
AKRON, Ohio -- The Tennessee men’s track & field team got some good work in and won three events on Feb. 11 at the Akron Invitational. The Vols dominated the sprints, with freshman Jamol James winning the 60m dash in a career-best reading of 6.72 to move to No. 12 on UT’s all-time performers list in that event. Sophomore Jarael Nelvis, mean-while, seized the 200 crown, covering the distance in 21.44 as he and James won their fi rst events as Vols. Junior Arnez Hardnick, a transfer from Gram-bling, was third in the 200 and fourth in the 60, carding personal records of 21.97 and 6.93, respectively. As he did in the fi rst meet of the
season at the Kentucky Invitational, Vol freshman Matthew Hoty won the shot put competition. Hoty collected his second win as a Vol with a blast of 57-11 3/4.
SEC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Vols picked up a trio of third-place fi nishes and posted a seventh-place team outcome with 40.50 points at the SEC Indoor Championships, Feb. 24-26. S o p h o m o r e C h a s e B r a n n o n grabbed third in the pole vault at 17-3 3/4, followed by Robert Rasnick in a tie for fourth at 17-0, accumulating 10 1/2 points in that event for UT. Also adding bronze efforts were senior Terry Benson in the 60m hurdles in a career-best 7.95 and Matthew Hoty in the shot put with a career-best and UT freshman-record toss of 62-3 1/4. Hoty, Stephen Derlath (12th, 5000m, 15:01.27) and Jamol James (5th, 60m, 6.72) were named to the SEC All-Freshman Team as the top fi nishing rookies in their events.
VA. TECH FINAL QUALIFIER
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Chase Brannon improved his NCAA stock in the pole vault, clearing a career-best height of 17-8 1/4 to fi n-ish second at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifi er. The mark boosted him to No. 13 nationally on the NCAA descending order list and to No. 9 on UT’s all-time performers chart. Freshman sprinter Jamol James took a crack at moving up the NCAA list in the 60-meter dash, but a minor leg injury prevented him from fi nishing his prelim race.

KENTUCKY INVITATIONAL
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Lady Vols opened their season at the Kentucky Invitational on Jan. 13-14, picking up two event wins during the weekend at Nutter Field House.
Tennessee victors included senior Annie Alexander in the shot put (52-9 1/4) and junior Nijgia Snapp in the 800 meters (2:08.55).
The win at UK was Snapp’s fi rst ca-reer triumph in the 800 as a Lady Vol after four runner-up eff orts, including one at last year’s Kentucky Invitation-al. That eff ort, which was the top time in the nation through the weekend, earned her the nod as the Jan. 17 SEC Women’s Runner of the Week.
Junior Jessie Harrison posted a runner-up eff ort for the Big Orange in the weight throw with a toss of 59-2, while senior Chanelle Price crossed the line third in the mile run at 4:47.47.
AUBURN INVITATIONAL
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Lady Vols netted their fi rst NCAA qualifi er of the campaign and pocketed a school record and victory, as they closed out their stay at the Auburn Invitational. Annie Alexander became Ten-nessee’s fi rst national qualifi er of the 2012 season, unleashing a blast of 58 feet, one inch in the shot put to punch her ticket to the NCAA Indoor meet in Nampa, Idaho, on March 9-10. The measurement, which came on her third throw of the competition, broke her 2009 indoor school record of 57-2, set at the NCAA meet that year. For her handy work, Alexander was named the SEC Field Event Athlete of the Week and was chosen for the CollegeSports360.com Primetime Performers Weekly Track & Field Honor Roll. Senior Chanelle Price made her fi rst season appearance in the women’s 800m a good one, collecting the ninth indoor victory of her career in that event with a 2:06.41 readout to edge former UT standout Kimarra McDonald (2:06.52). Price’s mark, the best indoor debut of her career, moved her to the top of the NCAA list at this point in the season.
TEXAS A&M MONDO CHALLENGE
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Lady Vols represented the SEC (along with Florida) at the Texas A&M Mondo Challenge on Jan. 27-28, helping the league win the women’s competition over the Pac-12 and Big 12 with 216 points. The Big 12 was second with 214, followed by the Pac-12 at 178. The Lady Vol DMR fi nished sec-ond but carded an NCAA auto mark in 11:02.74 with Chanelle Price, Ellen Wortham, Nijgia Snapp and Brittany Sheff ey carrying the baton. That time-
was the No. 5 all-time indoor mark by the Lady Vols and the fastest run in January by a UT quartet.
Price added a victory in the 800 meters, improving her season best to 2:05.33 and setting a meet record. For her individual and relay performanc-es, she was selected to the College Sports360.com Primetime Performers Weekly Track & Field Honor Roll.
Annie Alexander (55-2 3/4) was the runner-up in the women’s shot put, marking the third-straight top-two eff ort of the season for her.
Kia Jackson added a second-place showing of 19-1 3/4 in the long jump, carding a season-best measurement.
NEW BALANCE COLLEGIATE INV.
NEW YORK -- Senior Chanelle Price gave the Lady Volunteers their third event at the 2012 NCAA In-door Championships, reeling off an automatic-qualifying time of 2:04.25 in the championship division of the women’s 800 meters at the New Bal-ance Collegiate Invitational. Price wound up third behind BYU’s Nachelle Mackie (2:03.56) and Katie Palmer (2:03.79), but she recorded the fastest regular-season 800 time of her UT career. Teammate Nijgia Snapp was sixth, posting a one-and-a-half second career best of 2:05.49. Brittany Sheffey came up a little more than three seconds shy of auto qualifying in the mile, but she still put together a career-best time of 4:40.28 to cross the line second. That time moved her to number four on UT’s all-time performers list in that event and put her in a position that J.J. Clark believes will make her a strong candi-date for an NCAA bid. Ellen Wortham also turned in a fi ne showing in the women’s championship division of the 400 meters. The senior rolled to a career-best readout of 53.49 to take fourth place against a talented fi eld. Her eff ort moved her to No. 6 on UT’s all-time performers list. Senior Annie Alexander posted her fourth top-two shot put fi nish of the season, stretching the tape measure to 55 feet, 10 1/2 inches with her fi fth throw to take second in the women’s championship division.
FLOTRACK HUSKY CLASSIC
SEATTLE -- Brittany Sheffey en-dured the cross-country trek for the Flotrack Husky Classic on Feb. 10, and the Lady Vol senior made it worth her while. Running at the University of Wash-ington’s Dempsey Indoor, Sheffey cranked out a career-best time of 16:18.37 to wind up 16th in a talented Invitational section that included sev-eral post-collegiate runners. That mark, which came in her first indoor attempt at that distance, moved her to No. 4 on UT’s all-time indoor performers list
in the event and was the ninth fastest ever registered by a Lady Vol.
AKRON INVITATIONAL
AKRON, Ohio -- The Tennessee women’s track & fi eld team got some good work in and won seven Gold Division events on Feb. 11 at the Akron Invitational. Junior Kia Jackson led the way, tak-ing the 60-meter dash in 7.47 seconds and wrapping up the 200 meters in 24.44. It marked the fi rst time in her career she had fi nished fi rst at a meet. Senior Ashley Harris grabbed third in the 200 at 24.95. The Lady Vols were dominant in the middle distance area, as well, claiming fi rst-place honors in both the mile and 800 meters. Senior Chanelle Price, al-ready an automatic NCAA qualifi er this season in the 800, trained victoriously in the mile in Akron with a season best of 4:45.15, while junior Kelsey Kane was third in a career-topping 4:57.47. Sophomore Kianna Ruff , meanwhile, won the 800 in Price’s absence from the event, carding a PR of her own with a 2:07.64 eff ort. Senior Annie Alexander was victori-ous for the third time in fi ve outings in 2012, stretching the tape measure to 53-6 1/2. Junior Aslynn Halvorson was third in the women’s shot with a career-best toss of 48-9. Tennessee also recorded women’s triumphs in the triple jump from Al-lison Outerbridge, at 38-6 3/4, and in the 4x400m relay. The tandem of senior Ellen Wortham, Ruff , Price and junior Nijgia Snapp moved the baton around the oval in 3:42.28 for the Big Orange.
SEC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Two event victories and had a pair of runner-up finishes boosted the Lady Vols to a fourth-place performance with 68 points at the SEC Indoor Champion-ships, Feb. 24-26. The distance medley relay team collected its sixth-straight SEC title and eighth triumph in nine seasons, winning with facility-record time of 11:12.23. Carrying the baton were senior Chanelle Price, freshman Julia Petree, junior Nijgia Snapp and senior Brittany Sheff ey. Senior Annie Alexander, meanwhile, won the second SEC Indoor title and sixth overall conference title of her career with a blast of 55-11 3/4 in the shot put. Price added a runner-up outing in the 800 meters (2:06.45), while Wortham leaped to second in the long jump with a career-best mark of 20-5. Earning first-team All-SEC status for their triumphs in the shot and DMR, respectively, were Alexander, Petree, Price, Sheff ey and Snapp, while second-team kudos went to runners-
up Price (800m) and Wortham (long jump).
VA. TECH FINAL QUALIFIER
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Already an NCAA qualifi er with UT’s distance med-ley relay team, senior Ellen Wortham put herself into position for a national berth in the 400 meters at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifi er on March 3. Wortham zipped to a career-best readout of 52.99 seconds to win the race and post the then-No. 8 mark on the NCAA list. That eff ort moved her to No. 3 on UT’s all-time indoor perform-ers list in that event. Wortham also tried to qualify for NCAAs in the long jump (2nd, 19-9 3/4) and with UT’s 4x400m relay (1st, 3:36.98), but those marks were not seasonal improvements. Also on the 4x4 were Brittany Jones, Kianna Ruff and Martinique Octave.
