Welcome to the Frome Festival 2022

I’ve had the great honour of organising the last 14 Frome Festivals. The first festival I directed in Frome however, was 30 years ago, when teaching at Frome College. Then it was the inaugural Ecos Festival, celebrating the unusual henge of

stones parked next door to the Merlin Theatre on the Frome College campus. The stones formed an art installation conceived by Barry Cooper and supported by Foster Yeoman, the quarry company. Peter Chapman was Angela Yeoman’s emissary abroad, who persuaded 12 quarry companies to contribute each of these wonderfully ornate natural sculptures which celebrate the birth of the European Union.  These were then placed in a semi- circular arrangement encompassing an outdoor Greek-style amphitheatre. The festival lasted two weeks and featured many local groups and performers as well as involving nearly 100 students from all over Europe. The final three nights were devoted to a unique production of The Who’s rock opera “Tommy” directed by Mike Walker and myself from the College Drama department.

As I’m retiring from the role of Festival Creative Director this year, I decided to revive the idea of directing a musical on this atmospheric outdoor stage. For some time, I’ve been writing a new show entitled “The Haunting of Richard the Third”, collaborating  with David Hynds on the musical score. Covid has caused two postponements of the project, but perhaps the delay has been fortuitous, because it now  coincides not only with the Ecos anniversary and the centenary celebrations of Frome College, but also the tenth anniversary of King Richard the Third’s remains being discovered beneath a car park in Leicester. The show is presented in association with the Merlin Theatre by the Kairos Theatre Company, a local group run by my wife Anne, who is the producer. It’s been a pleasure working with her, at last. I’m also pleased to have persuaded our brilliant Festival artist Sholto Walker to devote the cover of this brochure to the event.

Programme is subject to change. For latest updates see:www.fromefestival.co.uk

Last year’s Frome Festival, though reduced due to Covid, was, nonetheless, memorable. Outdoor shows helped fill the gap caused by social distancing. Marston Park, the Silk Mill’s courtyard stage and, of course, Ecos, all came into their own. Encouraged  by this, we’ve included more open-air events including two children’s shows in Victoria  Park. There are plenty of headline names to draw the bigger audiences, but the festival has always been a celebration of the local community. The Art Trail, Hidden Gardens, guided tours and talks, help us explore and appreciate the culture and  history of Frome. Concerts in our historic churches are a mainstay of the festival, complementing performances at the Merlin and Memorial theatres, Rook Lane and the Cheese and Grain.

Last year was the festival’s 20th anniversary, commemorated by a memorable presentation by our founder Martin Bax, in honour of our late Chairman, Dr. Bob Morris. The Bob Morris Lecture is now an annual event. This year we are delighted to invite the popular TV historian David Olusoga to present a talk on his popular series “A House Through Time.”

So, as the Frome Festival turns 21, Ecos celebrates 30, Frome College notches up a century, and I reach an unimaginable age, it seems a good time to depart the scene. My huge thanks to the Board of Trustees, led admirably by Gavin Rea; Beverly Jones, our long-suffering General Manager; Margaret Perry our indispensable Treasurer, and all the sponsorship and stewarding teams. Our gratitude once again goes to Frome Town Council for their generous support this year; the Foyle Foundation, and the Cooper Hall Trust for grants enabling this festival to be the biggest ever at over 260 listed events.

Perhaps next year I will get to enjoy the Frome Festival!

Lucinda’s primary focus is on materiality – she is particularly drawn to its natural, often delicate and always changeable character. Each material is chosen for the degree to which it can transform; it may be highly reflective such as glass or graphite, or capable of undergoing radical visual transformation – for example, wood to charcoal or polished steel to rust. In Talking to Myself Chris lifts the lid on one of the most colourful and exotic periods in British cultural history, from the bombsites and ration books of post-war Dartford, to life with brother Mick, and the glittery underground of the 60s. Chris will read excerpts from his book, converse with the audience and then, together with violin virtuoso Elliet Mackrell will play a selection of his songs.FLOW BAR / £10 / Event 722 20:30 - 22:00MARK BARNWELLMark is a Spanish guitarist performing Latin, contemporary, Flamenco and World Fusion as well as traditional Spanish guitar pieces - original music alongside covers from artists including the Gipsy Kings, Santana and The Beatles. An ideal festival finale on the ECOS amphitheatre from this much travelled and experienced band. The show will transfer into the Merlin Theatre in the event of poor weather. Guitarist Tony Barby also holds the distinction of having appeared in the first ever Ecos Festival in 1992, in the band which performed The Who’s rock opera “Tommy”.Ecos Outdoor Stage at the Merlin Theatre£12 / Event 1021

is a new, annual festival dedicated to showcasing and celebrating all types of photography from local, national, and

international photographers.

The festival will put photography firmly on the map in Frome and the south west of the UK, and eventually put Frome on the international photo circuit. While our goal is to attract world class photography, Photo|Frome is also dedicated to making a difference in the local community; adding another layer to the town’s already impressive range of creative credentials.

The inaugural theme is The Independent Eye; celebrating photography as an art form and reflecting some of Frome’s own famed spirit of independence.

EXHIBITIONS

Rook Lane Chapel / FREE / 10:00–16:00 Sunday 26 June to Wednesday 13 July

42

This exhibition showcases six very different contemporary practitioners. It features the never-before-exhibited music photography of Danny North; from iconic images of Blur and the last tours of Oasis, to today’s U2, Muse, Dave Grohl, and The 1975. Olga Karlovac’s mysterious but alluring black and white portrayals of her native Croatia are atmospheric and rich with emotion. Hanna-Katrina Jędrosz is exhibiting for the first time her extensive documentation of the European Green Belt along the former Iron Curtain borderlands, where paradoxically wildlife flourishes. A timely show. For a year, John Angerson had unprecedented access to the astronauts of the NASA space shuttle as they trained. The dramatic street portraiture of East London by Robert Huggins is complemented by poetry, celebrating the diversity of that great city. And Vanessa Fairfax-Woods’ unique visual perspectives on the role of women and the pursuit of ‘perfect beauty’ invites the audience to reconsider what they think they know.

Round Tower, Black Swan Arts / FREE / 10:00-16:00 Tuesday 21 June to Sunday 10 July

This joint exhibition is a must for anyone interested in the history of the region. James Ravilious’ seventeen years long obsession with documenting all aspects of local life around Beaford – landscape, farming, everyday rhythms in the local towns and villages, and their special occasions – make up one of the country’s most extensive and internationally acclaimed rural archives. This is complemented by the equally profound work of Chris Chapman. For twenty-five years, Chris documented the people and landscape of Dartmoor, brought together in his beautiful book Wild Goose and Riddon.

Town Hall / FREE / 10:00 – 16:00 Saturday 2 July to Friday 15 July

Frome Wessex Photographic is one of the region’s most successful and longstanding camera groups. Twenty photographers will interpret the festival’s theme with a show called My Vision, My Process. This will span from landscape to street to abstract and ICM (intentional camera movement), with award-winning and newly established photographers.

Gallery at The Station / FREE / 10:00 – 16:00 Tuesday 21 June to Friday 15 July

Look closely at Frome and the surrounding areas and you’ll find a large and diverse community of photographers, whether internationally acclaimed professionals or dedicated amateurs. In a unique exhibition, the purpose-built Gallery at The Station will provide a window into the themes that are dominating photography today.

Makers’ Yard / FREE / 10:00 – 16:00 Friday June 24 to Friday 15 July, weekdays only

Culture Pool is the first visual art show curated by Makers’ Yard, the new artist-run cultural hub in Frome. The group exhibition will showcase large-format fly posters by an international group of contemporary photographers whose work represent a diverse body of intrepid portrait and still-life imagery. The show will be an unrefined, kaleidoscopic celebration of photography that is eccentric, distinctive and hung candidly both inside and outside of the warehouse space.

TALKS

Join us to get the story behind the work as we hear from the photographers featured in our exhibitions or talk with other artists and experts about the methods and history that make their craft what it is. There are too many to list individually, so please check daily events in this programme then book your seat at photofrome.org/talks. Be sure to browse the full listing as there are events happening before and after the Frome Festival period.

HIDDEN GARDENS

INFORMATION

44

Following the amazing success of 2021, the Gardeners of Frome will throw open their garden gates once again. For three days between the 8-10th  of July, we have an exciting rolling programme of Hidden Gardens; with different gardens opening on different days. There are more than 30 gardens on display with at least 12 gardens opening for the first time. Many gardens are offering refreshments with the proceeds going to charities of the gardener’s choice. The gardens are open from 10.30-5.00p.m. each day. Where possible gardens in close proximity have tried to open on the same day or days. In many cases, it may be more practical to park your car and walk. Some streets in Frome are narrow and parking can be difficult. To help you plan your days in advance, you can purchase and print your programme directly from the Frome Festival Website. PLEASE NOTE every visitor needs to buy a programme as the programme is ALSO YOUR TICKET.

Many of our gardens are accessible to people with limited mobility. Many gardens are fairly accessible to wheelchair users, and most are accessible with the aid of a stick. In both cases it may be wise to have additional help from friends or family.

Come armed with a notebook and pen to jot down ideas, or to make a quick sketch. Enjoy the wide range of gardens on offer, the NGS gardens past and present, or refreshments in the garden – and hopefully in the sunshine. Buy a jar of honey or a plant or two as a reminder of the happy day spent with us.

Plan your route carefully given that car parks in Frome charge. Public toilets can be found in the main Market Yard carpark. Having worked out your route, preferred gardens, coffee, and toilet stops you will be ready to ‘hit the ground’ running. Please pay attention to all Health & Safety notices, some gardens have beehives and others uneven paths or steps. Should you be unsure about allergens in foods on offer please ask your host. We regret that, with the exception of guide dogs, no dogs are allowed in the gardens. If we’re hit with further Covid 19 restrictions  you may need to wear a mask so come prepared. Some gardens have pinch points, and you may on occasions come into close proximity with others.

You can purchase and download your combined entrance ticket and programme online at fromefestival.co.uk. The sooner you have your programme the sooner you can start planning your days. You will need access to a printer to do this. Please remember that it is £5 per person. This modest amount allows access to all the gardens over three full days. Or see Venues and Places page, for Hidden Gardens points of sale locations in Frome. All proceeds from ticket sales support the Frome Festival and proceeds from plant sales and refreshments go to charities of the gardener’s choice. Please carry your programme with you and be prepared to show it if asked. You will not be able to purchase your entrance ticket on the day from any of the gardens.

The final Saturday brings one of the nation’s favourite poets to the Merlin stage. A leading member of the Liverpool poets in the 1960s, Roger McGough has a body of work which stretches over more than 50 years; he is also the presenter of the BBC Radio 4’s Poetry Please. Roger will be supported by local performance poet Liv Torc, who also hosts the Hip Yak Poetry Slam. Added to this heady mix are original drama productions on offer from, Frome Drama club, the ‘Nevertheless’ and the ‘Really Truly’ Theatre Companies, and The Haunting of Richard lll on the ECOS stage from the 7-9th July.

YOUR FESTIVAL NEEDS YOU!This year the Frome Festival will be celebrating 21 years. In order to keep this wonderful event operating for a further 20 years, we need your support. The festival relies heavily on donations (mainly from the Friends of the Frome Festival) and commercial sponsorship as a significant proportion of its income.

As a Friend you will receive priority booking for festival tickets and receive regular newsletters throughout the year. Annual membership starts at just £20 per person and further details are available on: fromefestival.co.uk/frome-festival-friends.

Please consider joining the Friends of the Frome Festival to keep your community festival alive and well, Thank you.
