Pastor’s Pen – January 2016 is here… what will the New Year bring to you & UM Temple? This newsletter is a reminder to me that Marlene and I have been here at Temple for 23 months. We will celebrate 2 years on Feb. 2 nd , 2016… seems like we have been here a long time, doesn’t it? As a church, United Methodist Temple has much to celebrate: two very successful Back2School Bash events, a great mission/ministry going at Lighthouse Mission, launched Wednesday Night Live, completed a “hands on” mis- sion trip this summer. We paid $60,000 on our church debt in 2015. We have brought about a dozen new members into our church and have several new families worshipping with us. Our trustees have taken action that saved several thousands of dollars, (new insurance carrier and a new rating in our flood insur- ance). Several men and women have attended the Walk to Emmaus retreat. We began the process of changing our church teams/committees, and this will be the second year that our team leaders will share their annual team plans (open to everyone on Jan. 16 th at 8:30 a.m.). Are there some concerns? Sure, we still need to continue our focus on ministering to younger families, reach out to the Temple Preschool parents and staff, continue to reduce our debt, focus on making new disciples for Christ, find out why many of our old friends have not been attending UMT, place other people’s needs ahead of our own… understand that we have to do things differ- ently at United Methodist Temple if we are going to attain different results than we have experienced in the last 20+ years… How do we accomplish what is needed for us and our church? The answer is simple… love God, love our neighbor. Grow in our Christian maturity, as individuals, and as a church. How do we do that? Funny you should ask!!! In 2016 we, as a church, will begin a Journey through the Bible together. This is meant to accomplish a couple of objectives: 1. We will learn more about our God and how God has been revealed to us. 2. We will have an opportunity to grow in our Christian maturity… (Head (Biblical) knowledge & Heart (spiritual) experience/growth). 3. Pastor’s Pen – January 2016 is here… what will the New Year

bring to you & UM Temple?

This newsletter is a reminder to me that Marlene and I

have been here at Temple for 23 months. We will celebrate 2

years on Feb. 2nd, 2016… seems like we have been here a long time, doesn’t it?

As a church, United Methodist Temple has much to celebrate:

two very successful Back2School Bash events, a great mission/ministry going at

Lighthouse Mission, launched Wednesday Night Live, completed a “hands on” mis-

sion trip this summer. We paid $60,000 on our church debt in 2015. We have

brought about a dozen new members into our church and have several new

families worshipping with us. Our trustees have taken action that saved several

thousands of dollars, (new insurance carrier and a new rating in our flood insur-

ance). Several men and women have attended the Walk to Emmaus retreat. We

began the process of changing our church teams/committees, and this will be the

second year that our team leaders will share their annual team plans (open to

everyone on Jan. 16th at 8:30 a.m.).

Are there some concerns? Sure, we still need to continue our focus

on ministering to younger families, reach out to the Temple Preschool parents

and staff, continue to reduce our debt, focus on making new disciples for Christ,

find out why many of our old friends have not been attending UMT, place other

people’s needs ahead of our own… understand that we have to do things differ-

ently at United Methodist Temple if we are going to attain different results than

we have experienced in the last 20+ years…

How do we accomplish what is needed for us and our church?

The answer is simple… love God, love our neighbor. Grow in our

Christian maturity, as individuals, and as a church. How do we do that?

Funny you should ask!!!

In 2016 we, as a church, will begin a Journey through the Bible together.

This is meant to accomplish a couple of objectives: 1. We will learn more about

our God and how God has been revealed to us. 2. We will have an opportunity

to grow in our Christian maturity… (Head (Biblical) knowledge & Heart

(spiritual) experience/growth). 3. We will have an opportunity to fellowship

with other Christians here at Temple and perhaps with others who do not at-

tend Temple.

Last week we sent out the reading schedule for 2016-2017. We will also

be forming Life Groups for you & others at Temple to participate in, BUT also

this will be a time to ask a friend, neighbor or family member to join with us.

(Continued from Page 1) they can be your instant “Life Group”. A Life Group is basically small

groups (3-15 people max) that we will join. Some of us do not attend Sunday school, so what

about us? That is where we have the opportunity to form and be a part of a “small group”.

Marlene & I will be hosting a Life Group probably in our home or at the church. I would en-

courage others to consider facilitating a Life Group in your home, or at church or at a restau-

rant/bar, etc. You don’t have to “know” the Bible to facilitate a Life Group… you just need to

facilitate the discussion. In fact, to do a good job facilitating, you should be reluctant to share

your opinion or knowledge of the Bible… it’s about the group finding the right answers togeth-

er.

So you should prayerfully consider hosting (facilitating) a Life Group. AND at the very

least you need to make sure you are part of a Life Group. You will find a sign up sheet to host

or a sign up sheet if you are interested in being part of a Life Group… SIGN UP in the nar-

thex.

2015 was a good year for our church. Let’s make 2016 even better… let us

learn more about God and fall deeper in love with Jesus, our Savior, and with one

another as we participate in our Journey through the Bible and join a Life Group.

Also on another note, on behalf of the UM Temple staff we would like to say

thank you for the Christmas gift the Church has provided for us… you folks were

very kind and we sincerely appreciate your efforts on our behalf.

Happy New Year!

MISSION AND OUTREACH CORNER

Renovate or Die: Ten Ways to Focus your Church on Mission. Bob Farr offers practical tools to help congregations move from maintenance minded to mission-driven ministry. Gift of Judy Clayton The History of Quakerism. A history of the Quaker movement as a

whole, treating it as a segment of modern church history; relating it to its historic roots. In each period the author pays attention to the elements which are most important, such as the outstanding persons, the discipline, the conservative or progressive tendencies, and the in-fluential outside forces. Gift of Dr. Curtis Chambers. The Quaker Story. The author presents to the world a faithful account of our princi-ples, and briefly lets them understand what we have to say for ourselves. Gift of Dr. Curtis Chambers

They Knew Jesus. Based on the Bible and historical sources, this book depicts those men and women—friends and foes, intimates and strangers—who figured in the life of Je-sus. They were human beings, caught up in a dramatic venture that transcended their per-sonal limitations. Gift of Dr. Curtis Chambers The Light Within You. This is fundamentally a book of hope. The author challenges us to look clearly at the central reality of faith—that we were created by a loving God who sent his Son to redeem us.

From the Trustees: We are looking for volunteers who are willing to give some hours on a Saturday, date to be determined, to help paint the interior of our church. We will be starting with the hall-ways. Curt will have all supplies and all we need are some extra hands to help us clean and brighten our very busy halls!! Please contact the Church Office, Mike Johnson or Deb Kesler to add your name to our volunteer list or with any questions. Thanks in advance, Trustee Team

KUDOS AND NOTES

Three Notes from 14th and Chestnut Community Center: Thank you for all you do to help us in our ministry! The trailer load of gifts you so generously purchased for our children this Christmas truly help to make sure they have a wonderful holiday. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! ...Your generous donation of food, non-food items, and canned goods to our Mother Hubbard Cupboard will truly help us in our ministry...With so many families out of work, the families truly depend on the items that come from Moth-er Hubbard’s Cupboard. Last month we served approxi-mately 1300 food requests in our food pantry. Because of the rapid increase in utilities and the need to keep our children safe, your generous donation of $300 will truly help us to remain a strong force in the community. 14th & Chestnut Community Center Family

The Church Staff would like to thank you for the generous Staff Gift you gave us this Christmas. It is greatly appreciat-ed!!

United Methodist Temple,

You are all very dear to us! Thank

Preschool Graduation took place on May 22, 2014. The sanctuary was filled with proud parents and grandparents celebrating a terrific year. The children sang songs and we watched a slide show. Soon the graduates were announced and I read off their names and what each one planned to be as an adult. We had many ideas, everything from Sam wanting to be a paleontologist (dinosaur expert) to Maggie wanted to be a princess fairy. Thank you to Jill, who accompanied us on the piano and led us in prayer. The happy, but somewhat teary, crowd enjoyed refresh-ments in fellowship hall afterwards. It is amazing to think how quickly our school year passed. Each year I am sad to see some of stu-dents heading off to Kindergarten, but I know they are ready to go and they will do well. It seems just yesterday these four and five year olds were just little two year olds arriving for the first time. How quickly they change and become so grown up! This summer we have a large group of kids enjoying Summer Mom's Day Out on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Several of our teachers are leading the kids through fun activities and enjoying the playground.
