Happy Spring!!

Yes, I know, it feels like summer, but that is OK. This Florida girl loves the heat. I think I may be out numbered though. We want to thank all of Temple Terrace for their support of the newsletter. We were able to grow by 8 pages this month, which means we put in four more pages of editorial. There is so much going on in Temple Terrace and so much to write about. All of the editorial contributors are fantastic!! And more is always welcome. Remember, we have the two contests going on each month now. The Cover Photo contest is for you to send in pictures of yourself, family or friends

from the community. All pictures are welcome and we love to share them. The winner will receive a $25 gift card to Applebee's or Cracker Barrel. The hidden picture contest is finding a hidden object in one of the ads inside. For April hunt for a solid BLUE EASTER EGG. We will draw from all the correct entries and the winner will also receive a $25 gift card to Applebee's or Cracker Barrel. As always, send in your photos, news, stories and announcements. In 1959 the Temple Terrace Woman's Club became inspired to establish a library in Temple Terrace. They pursued this goal with dedication and perseverance and on January 15, 1960 the first library in Temple Terrace opened its doors. The books were donated by city residents and collected by Scout groups. The library was staffed entirely by volunteers from the Woman's Club who provided all funding by holding bazaars, etc. The city donated a very small caddy house/pro shop located

on the 19th tee at the corner of Inverness, Glen Arven and Riverhills. By April 1961 the collection and circulation had outgrown the small house and the library was moved to the City Hall building (now a part of Florida College). As the demands for library service grew it became apparent that the City should take

over its operation and on February 1, 1962 the Woman's Club signed over all responsibility to the City and a Library Board was appointed. This enabled the library to be eligible to receive books from the Hillsborough County Library Service and the book collection grew rapidly In 1965 it became necessary to plan for a new building. Funds to

purchase the land and construct the building came from local, state and federal

funds. On September 23, 1965 ground was broken at 202 Bullard Parkway for the new building which was dedicated on April 17, 1966. The Woman's Club, still interested in the library project provided the

funds for the new charging desk. This new building was able to meet the community's library needs until the mid-seventies when an additional 5,600 square feet were added. This newly enlarged structure was dedicated on April 2, l978. Tragedy struck in the early hours

on February 18, 1982 when an arsonist set fire to the building. Both children and adults were moved to tears when they saw the destruction later that day. The citizens of Temple Terrace and the Woman's Club once again made

a difference and volunteered their time to help the library and in only 6 weeks the library opened it doors at the Lightfoot Recreation Center while the damaged building was rebuilt. Exactly one year after the

fire, on February 16, 1983 the newly refurbished building was dedicated. A total of 11,666 books and 1,010 recordings were lost in the fire. v

More than 200 residents gathered March 20 for a four-hour Community Redevelopment / City Council meeting at the Omar K. Lightfoot Recreation Center to continue discussions on a request for plan modifications submitted by Vlass Temple

Terrace, LLC., the City’s development firm. The meetings were a continuation of the Feb. 16 Special Council Meeting, which drew numerous residents and consultants to speak for, and against, the developer’s proposed changes to the Master Development Agreement (MDA). The modifications were sought to allow the placement of 214 apartment units in three, four-story buildings

on the north end of the redevelopment area. The Master Development Agreement calls for an urban, mixed-use project, including retail and residential, in the redevelopment area. Tuesday night’s proceedings required an initial meeting of the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), which is comprised of the City Council members, to review the latest concept plan for the redevelopment project. The regular City Council meeting followed, with council members taking action based on the CRA’s findings and recommendations. Mike Vlass, of Vlass Temple Terrace, LLC., addressed the CRA and residents with updated information on design, parking and other changes to the apartment concept plan that would reduce waiver requirements and allay fears of the apartment-only proposal, which would incorporate no retail space. Vlass said his team had redesigned the ground floor of two of the buildings to create 12-foot ceilings, which would allow them to be converted to retail use when market conditions improve. CRA members then listened to more than 30 residents, who expressed their opinions for and against the apartment proposal. The majority of residents who took the microphone expressed reservations over the developer’s deviation from the original mixed-

use design. Many residents also expressed support and appreciation for the work Vlass has done to this point. They also concurred with the developer’s advice to adapt to the changing economic times and need to adjust the plan accordingly. Concerns also surrounded the potential impact of having no development in Phase II, which could affect property tax rates over the next several years. Many pointed out that if the modified concept plan were not allowed to proceed the development could be at a standstill and could jeopardize work on subsequent phases of the project. At the conclusion of the public hearing, council members addressed both the developer and audience with their individual positions. The overriding sentiment was that the concept plan had strayed too far from the MDA and

that more time was needed to completely review all aspects and impacts of the proposed changes. Finally, City Councilman David Pogorilich made a motion to deny the developer’s petition for changes to the MDA. His motion passed 4-1, with the elected officials stating their hopes that the developer, city staff and residents could revisit the MDA and address how Temple Terrace’s vision could be realized under the current economic conditions. At the City Council meeting, the Vlass team withdrew their Planned Development zoning submittal, which will allow them to resubmit a modified development proposal without a 180-day waiting period. Now, it is up to the Vlass group to decide whether they wish to continue working further with the city or abandon their efforts on this project. v

What do you get when you combine the energy of 35 teams representing all of the schools in Temple Terrace, local businesses, churches, civic clubs, families and friends with the intent to raise $123,000 for the purpose of eradicating cancer? If you are in Temple Terrace on April 27th you get the all-night-street-party called Relay for Life and this year they are “Wild to Find the Cure”. This year the committee headed by Honorary Chairs Mayor Joe & Liz Affronti has worked hard to attract people who might not otherwise come out to this open air party at Greco Middle School. But once everyone hears about the entertainment alone – who would want to stay home? The smell of hotdogs, bar-b-que, grilled cheese sandwiches (yes – homemade grilled cheese hot off the skillet) plus games, contests, dancing and the promise of a pancake breakfast should bring the neighbors out to participate. The VOTT competition, produced

by Just Sang Productions, will be joined by favorites like Masque Community Theater, Temple Terrace Ballet, Tampa Bay Tech's Step Team and Purple Dragon Martial Arts. Relay's other featured entertainment during the evening include VOTT celebrity judges Mike Tozier and Ken Spivey, Relay's Inspiring Luminaria Ceremony featuring Glee Moms and Temple Terrace United Methodist Church's Steadfast 190. The evening will not be all fun and games of course. Event Chair, Cheri Donohue, says that the Opening Ceremony at 6 pm will focus on the survivors who will be recognized, applauded and celebrated. Anyone who is a cancer survivor is invited to register for the

complimentary dinner. How can you help? Join a team, support a team member, sponsor a track marker, enter the VOTT competition, and most importantly – come out to support all those who are working so hard to make this a successful fundraiser. Final selection of VOTT will be based on $$$ (votes). What do you get when you host an event for 10 years for the purpose of erasing the doom of a cancer diagnosis? If you are in Temple Terrace on April 27th you get to join in the going "Wild to Find the Cure" and the hope of more birthdays. For more information email [email protected] v

Work crew in front of house

You might think that when you belong to an International organization that is responsible for the eradication of Polio – yes – Polio that dreaded disease

that you just never hear about anymore. Well you might think that the members would be able to relax and feel pretty good about their accomplishments. Well you would be right, we do feel good about it, but we are always looking for that next great

idea. It might be hard to beat getting rid of a dreaded disease but even that started as “a big idea”. Here in Temple Terrace, that next big idea came during a regular meeting. Members were discussing the homeless situation and how perhaps they could make a difference. Rotarian Jim Ruyle, talked about the broken window theory and how even one broken window in a neighborhood, could lead to more broken windows and so on. At that time, foreclosures were first appearing in Temple Terrace and some neighborhoods were starting to see an increase in unkempt properties. Jim and a few others met with Joe Gross of the City of Temple Terrace Code Compliance office and together the Neighbor-to-Neighbor project was born. The project is simple – the City makes a list of homes in need of work and guarantees that the homes are abandoned. Work consists generally of yard and debris clean-up with Rotarians in bright yellow “Rotarians At Work” t-shirts who

bring rakes, clippers, lawn mowers and the occasional chain saw for a morning of labor. Once the work is done, a few members talk to the neighbors about the work done and encourage them to keep the yards mowed until some settlement can be reached and a new homeowner in place. This simple act brings out the best in neighbors and the work crews have been well received. Most neighbors tell us that they aren’t sure what they are supposed to do about the unkempt property and are delighted to have some semblance of normalcy back on their street. On Saturday, March 31st the club changed the work done within the City, but this time with a little twist. Officially called a Pepper Bust, the

Rotarians At Work

club went into the same type of yards and abandoned lots to clear the area of an invasive plant called the Brazilian Pepper-Tree. Some consider it the “Florida Holly” but the havoc it wreaks on the environment makes it illegal to plant and a danger to the health of our shorelines and wildlife habitats. If you are interested in helping with any club project or to find out more about Rotary, join us any Tuesday morning at the IHOP at Fowler & Morris Bridge Rd. The bell brings us to order at 7:30am and we promise to have you on your way by 8:30. Call Cheri Donohue, President, at 813-230-3389 if you want to know more about the club or project or better yet – drop in, your first breakfast is on us! v

Gator’s Dockside5840 e. Fowler Ave.tampa , Fla. 33617813-341-4445 The Mystery Diner was out in Temple Terrace, and discovered an affordable, comfortable, casual restaurant that is uniquely Florida, yet showers you with an inveritable cornucopia of food choices. Gator’s Dockside specializes in wings, ribs and seafood, but also serves family-style meals and a great kids menu. It’s like a family restaurant, sports bar

and game room rolled into one. And while they have a bevy of big-screens viewable from every table, the sound level is quiet enough to hear your family tell you they want more cheesy shrimp and crab dip. The restaurant, located on Fowler Avenue, is easy to get to coming from the east, but more of a challenge coming from the west with Friday traffic. However, don’t let this keep you from visiting. We got a table right away, and parking was not a problem.

Inside there is plenty of space, a large number of tables, booths, seating for private parties and even an area for outdoor dining. The varied menu is full of choices with appetizers like onion tanglers, hand-battered pickle chips, nachos, buffalo shrimp, their signature dish of alligator tail and of course, wings: grilled, breaded or naked, in orders of 10 or 50, and with 15 different sauces to choose from. Oh, and they have boneless wings too. There is a nice selection of draught and bottled beers to complement your order as well. We started off with the cheesy shrimp and crab dip, that is exactly what the menu described as “simply scrumptious.” It was shrimp and crab blended together with cream cheese, parmesan and mild spices, served with crisp pita points. As always, TMD family ordered a variety from the menu with the wife getting the sirloin steak, a bowl of broccoli and a good-size salad, the kid asking for the chicken and cheese quesadillas, and I got the baby back ribs with a side of chili, which was topped with onions, cheese and jalapenos -- deelicious. The ribs were perfectly tender with Gator’s own sauce, the steak was cooked as ordered, the quesadillas passed the finicky kid test, and all the food was hot on delivery. The only exception was the garlic toast, which could have been “toastier” if you know what I mean. Everything else was fresh and tasty. The menu includes an array of

appetizers, a selection of sandwiches, a bunch of burgers, many meals, and definitely desserts; which will have to wait until the next visit since we were too full. While the Mystery Kid Diner didn’t order from the kids menu, there is a children’s menu upon request. And how’s this for family friendly -- on Tuesdays, kids 12 and under eat for free. The prices are affordable at 6-8 dollars for appetizers or 8-12 dollars for burgers, sandwiches and entrees on the menu. A few of Gator’s signature items are priced a little higher, but those are only a few dollars more. The Mystery Diner gives Gator’s Dockside in Temple Terrace four forks out of five for an excellent dining experience on any day of the week.

The Riverhills Elementary School site has a wide variety of crops planted already, including okra, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and green beans. All crops are organic, with no pesticides in use; in addition, members are also encouraged to bring household scraps for the compost pile to create fertilizer. Work days are arranged typically for Saturdays, although members are welcome to drop by and help when it is convenient for them. As a community endeavor, the Temple Terrace Community Garden has also decided to host workshops that address relevant issues for its members. The first workshop, about the importance of worms for an organic garden, occurred on March 3 and was a great success. Our next workshop is scheduled for April 21

and will take place at the Riverhills Park gazebo. It will include sharing recipes for juicing garden crops and a presentation by Grace’s Hydro Organic Gardening Center about compost and other ways of feeding the soil. In the future, workshops will be offered on a regular basis with topics of interest to the community garden members. New members are always welcome to join the community garden. While the current site is communal and does not allow for individual plots, this option will be available soon at Riverhills Park. Families and children (under adult supervision) are also encouraged to participate. For more information about the community garden, please look for the Facebook group (Temple Terrace Community Garden) or

check out the website at http://www.templeterracecommunitygarden.com/. We look forward to seeing you in the garden! v

Fire Department Citizen Programs How would you like to help out your local Fire Department? Take some time to consider a few of the programs that we offer here in Temple Terrace. Depending on how you may like to help, the following are programs that may interest you. The Reserve Firefighter program is designed for future firefighters and paramedics. The Community Emergency Response Team, or “C.E.R.T”, is for those interested in helping during community disasters or other events. And the Fire Corp program is designed to allow citizens to assist in special programs of the Fire Department. The Reserve Firefighter program consists of firefighters, E.M.T. and paramedics who are trained to assist the career personnel. Reserve crew members work directly with on duty personnel providing support and manpower during on scene operations. Reserves not only have weekly meetings, but Reserve crews also have a monthly requirement of “ride time” with the shift personnel. During that time, they are assigned to an apparatus and work with that crew. Many of the current career firefighters in Temple Terrace were once members of this program. For more information, please contact Operations Chief Phil Armiger at 506-6705.

The Community Emergency Response Team or “C.E.R.T.” program is a program designed by FEMA to educate people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills. C.E.R.T. members coordinate their efforts during special events in the community with both Police and Fire personnel. In that same fashion, if Temple Terrace or the surrounding community was involved in some form of disaster, C.E.R.T. members would be called upon for assistance as well. For more information, please visit www.citizencorps.gov/cert, or contact TTFD Administration at 506-6700. The Fire Corp program is designed to help community members make a difference for their local fire and EMS departments. Fire Corps helps departments build more capacity by connecting them to community volunteers who can assist in a variety of non-emergency roles. Public education, fire code enforcement, and other special projects rely upon members of the Fire Corp to be successful. If any of these programs seem like

something you are interested in, please contact Temple Terrace Fire Station #1, and we would be happy to have your help. Together, we are “Striving for Excellence...Exceeding Expectations”.Joe Cable, Engineer [email protected]

Temple Terrace Firefighters "RUN FOR A

GOOD CAUSE" Members of the fire department recently participated in the following 5K run hosted by the GFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club. The Inaugural I Will INSPIRE 5k and 1 Mile Fun Run was held on February 18th at Telecom Park. The run benefitted Matt Long’s I WILL Foundation, which has helped

amazing athletes overcome near impossible odds. To learn more about his story read the book “The Long Run”. The race also benefitted Marine Lt. Col. Ty Edwards. Edwards was

following a convoy en route to patrol a voting registration site in a small Afghanistan town not far from the Pakistan border. His attackers hid in a ridge and began firing at them. As he jumped out of his humvee he was shot in the head, despite wearing a helmet. It left him unable to speak and paralyzed over much of his body. He was immediately flown to Germany, then Bethesda , MD and finally at the James A Haley VA Hospital in Tampa. The VA became his home for nearly two years. Finally in 2010 he was able to move back home with his wife and two children. He is still receiving therapy 5 days a week and it is his hope to be able to walk again one day in the near future. You can learn more about his remarkable journey on his site http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/tyedwards. v

The Temple Terrace Preservation Society (TTPS) hosted the Temple Terrace Hickory Heritage Historic

Golf Tournaments over the weekend of February 18th-20th at the Temple Terrace Golf & Country Club (TTG&CC). The event included two golf tournaments played with hickory shafted golf clubs and replica 1920s era gutta percha balls. Once again the TTG&CC course was filled with knicker-clad golfers as would have been seen here in the 1920s. The sweet sound of hickory clubs striking gutta percha balls could be heard throughout the course.

The 2102 Temple Terrace Hickory Hacker amateur tournament was won by the team of Brad Birdsong, Chris Cimino, Adam Varney and

Eric Wiese with a fantastic score of 61. The winner’s names will be inscribed on the permanent trophy on exhibit in the TTG&CC trophy case. The four winners will also enjoy

bragging rights until next year! The 2012 United States Professional Hickory Golf Championship (USPHGC) once again attracted players from around the country. This professionals only tournament celebrates the 1925 Florida Open and includes a $5,000 purse matching the amount awarded in the original event. Eddie Peckels of Winter Park took first place in the men’s

division with a 3-over par 76. Jennifer Cully won the lady’s division for the second year in a row. TTPS would like to thank everyone who participated in the tournaments and the many sponsors who helped make the weekend a big success! v

The Temple Terrace Garden Club offers a grant to each of the three public schools serving Temple Terrace. Gardening offers active and engaging connections to academics, from science to math to nutrition and literacy. Project goals should focus on the enhancement and development of an appreciation for nature; the growing of plants and trees; the protection of our environment through conservation of our natural resources, forests, waters and wildlife. Applications are available by contacting Sandra Johnston, Chairman, by mail at TT Garden Club, TTGC Plant Seeds through Education at 415 Woodmont Ave. Temple Terrace 33617 The following grants were funded for the 2011-2012 school year:1. Riverhills Elementary, teacher Amy Shell, “Dragonflies Garden Club,” $250.00. The students in the club are heavily involved in the planting, nurturing, harvesting,

and the utilization of herbs, fruits, and vegetables that they grow. The funds will be used to purchase seeds, organic fertilizer, hoses, and be applied towards the purchase of three time lapse cameras to document the growth from planting to harvest.2. Lewis Elementary, teacher Marlene Gutierrez, “Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, It’s Off to Grow We Go,” $250.00. The grant will supply funds to purchase a Grow Lab II compact garden to be used with gifted science students in grades 1-5. The students will explore the realms of how things grow and change the stages of living things, the basic needs of all living things, and the interdependence of living things on their environment.3. Temple Terrace Elementary, Principal Carol Kay Brown, “Learning Garden and Service Project,” $500.00. Multiple gardens are maintained by students in all grade levels. They are partnered with Metropolitan Ministries and the Spring for Battered Women

and Children. The program is ongoing and involves the entire school, parents, volunteers, and community leaders. The garden is used as an outdoor teaching laboratory where reading, writing, math, science, and social studies are integrated. The program has received a lot of press and media coverage. This grant will allow the purchase of needed materials and supplies. The committee commended them for their efforts and awarded them additional funds. Interested in gardening? My name is Susan Gerros and for the past three and a half years my family has lived next door to Alex and Lolann Foxworth. They have been great neighbors, treating our two boys just like their own, babysitting for us at a moment's notice, looking out for our home when we are out of town, inviting us into their home, and making us feel very welcome to the Temple Terrace neighborhood. They are both Tampa natives. They started "dating" in the ninth grade, they have lived in Temple Terrace in the same house for 40 plus years. The house that they live in was built by Lolann's grandfather. On February 4th, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Benjamin Glow will be representing Greco Middle School at the 2012 Florida State Science Fair in Lakeland this April. Ben competed at the Hillsborough Regional STEM Science Fair in February, with his project entitled, “GreenWise = FatWise: A Metabolic Study of Organic vs. Non-Organic Livestock and Poultry”. He was awarded second place in his category of Biochemistry.Ben’s project measured and compared the amounts lipids (fats) and monosaccharides and polysaccharides (carbohydrates) in organically and non-organically raised beef and poultry including ground round, ground chuck, ground chicken and ground turkey. After conducting 144 trials, his results indicated a significant difference in the amounts of fats and carbohydrates. Organically raised livestock and poultry were significantly lower in fat content than their non-organically raised counterparts. Ben and his family have always been interested in maintaining a healthy, well-balanced diet. Ben

King High School Relay For Life Event March 2012

On the weekend of March 23rd-25th, King High School presented its 9th annual Relay For Life weekend. Continuing their affiliation with the American Cancer Society, King students pride themselves in being the only student-run Relay For Life organization in the state of Florida. The school’s specific efforts have become nationally recognized for their continual success in raising large sums of money for cancer research (over $100,000 a year for the last five years, hitting over $130,000 last year). This year, over 650 team members – which is one third of the student body – participated on 52 well-organized teams, embracing the theme: “The Animal KINGdom: Searching for a Cure.” The 2012 campaign began this past September with a Paint the Campus

Purple event which was then followed by a school-wide visibility campaign and committee frenzy to increase participation. The final weekend’s celebrations and fundraising efforts kicked off with the annual Relay For Life Benefit Concert featuring King High School’s PRIDE Show Choir. This standing room only concert was held on Friday, March 23rd at 7pm in the King High School auditorium. Tickets were free for cancer survivors, $5 for general seating and $10 for reserved seating. Every year, current senior Betsey Giammattei writes and performs an original song for the themed campaigns and unveils them at this concert. PRIDE, a competitive mixed ensemble of singers,

Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School

Out with the Old, In with the New

Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School has been a school of small stature and status since its creation in 2007, but over the course of five years, the school’s evident progression towards becoming an elite, top-

quality learning institution has been much to build upon. Due to the success and continuing growth of the school, in February, the Brooks DeBartolo School Board decided to move from the school’s present location, a former Circuit City building on N. 15th and Fowler, to the current home of City Life Church, just two miles

away on N. Central Avenue. The building will be converted into the new and improved Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School by August of this year. Regarding the City Life campus, Brooks DeBartolo’s principal Kristine Bennett, who is in her first year at the school, is particularly excited. She hopes the increased visibility will lead to more student enrollment as well as create opportunities for more student learning and activities. There will be 24 refurbished classrooms, seven more than the current school has, and finally a gymnasium. If that weren’t enough, engineers have designed an addition to the building

that will contain an improved fitness center, two brand new science labs, a more suitable band room and a covered outdoor eating area. A significant part of Brooks DeBartolo purchasing City Life Church’s building is the huge gymnasium, which will serve as home for the basketball and volleyball teams. Students and faculty are also excited for the physical education classes, also known as HOPE. Since it opened its doors in 2007, the school has become a rather tight-knit community of students. It has produced high-achieving alumni that have gone on to quality schools such as Howard University, Florida State, and the University of South Florida. As the present phase of BDCHS reaches its conclusion, a new, exciting chapter of growth and achievement will begin at an improved Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School in a matter of just five, swift months. Article was written by Isaiah Hensley, a freshman at Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School. His teacher, Nathan Sturtzel teaches English I, Journalism & Sociology. v

dancers and musicians, was featured in a 2011 Super Bowl commercial on Fox, and performs throughout the Tampa Bay area during the school year.

The annual Relay For Life at King High School began on Saturday, March 24th at 3pm with an Opening Ceremony held on the King High School track. Cancer survivors were invited to walk a lap with their caregivers, passing students who cheered with their banners and spirit sticks that represented their teams. This year, the track was separated by biomes, and each team had chosen an animal to represent. At 9pm, a moving ceremony began where candle luminarias were lit in memory of loved ones who have passed away from cancer and to honor those who have survived its ravages. At 11pm, all guests left the field and the students camped out for the rest of the event – a well anticipated night of entertainment, great food, moments of contemplation, and most importantly, walking for a phenomenal cause.

Funds for Fuel Up to Play 60

The Dairy Council of Florida has awarded more than $84,000 to 30 schools statewide to support Fuel Up to Play 60, a national in-school health and wellness program that encourages children to eat nutrient-rich foods (low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains) and achieve at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Fuel Up to Play 60 is a program of the National Dairy Council and the National Football League, in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture. Tampa Bay Technical High School received one of the grants, and is the only school in Hillsborough County which has done so.

“These schools are leaders in the fight against childhood obesity, using the Fuel Up to Play 60 program as a way to make a difference, getting kids to eat healthier and move more,” said Jennifer Sills, MPH, RD, LD/N, SNS, director of Dairy Health and Wellness for the Dairy Council of Florida. Each school received up to $4,000 to increase awareness of and access to nutrient-rich foods and provide increased opportunities for physical activity for students. Behind the Pink Ribbon

By Erica Collura

People almost always recognize the pink colored ribbons printed on shirts, towels, coffee cups, or just

about anything. That distinct pink ribbon has become uniquely identified with

breast cancer. Breast cancer, two words no woman wants to hear in her doctor's office. But as scary as these words may be there is hope. Breast cancer treatment has evolved significantly over the past two decades. Advances in breast cancer research and improved technology have turned a once

devastating diagnosis into a

treatable disease. Paramount in achieving this is early detection. For this reason, Dr. Collins cannot stress enough to women 40 years of age and older the importance of yearly mammograms. Breast cancer most often presents without symptoms which is why screening mammography is an important tool for early detection. When a diagnosis of breast cancer is made Dr. Collins reminds her patients that there are treatment

options. This disease does not affect everyone the same and treatment is not "one size fits all." Surgical treatment options are much improved and do not always require complete removal of the breast (mastectomy). Most patients have the option of breast conservation therapy where only the cancerous portion of the breast is removed. Even in cases where mastectomy is required women now have various options available for breast reconstruction. Most of these surgical treatments can be offered by Dr. Collins and the facilities at Florida Medical Clinic. But it should be kept in mind that cancer treatment is best achieved through a team approach where many doctors from different specialties come together to provide a treatment plan for an individual patient. Dr. Collins will work with physicians in other specialties at the Florida Medical Clinic to offer comprehensive care to her patients. At Florida Medical Clinic Dr. R. Collins will perform surgeries including breast surgery, advanced laparoscopic procedures, intestinal surgery, hernia repairs, gall bladder

surgery, skin cancer removal, wound care, and port placements, to name a few. For patient convenience, Dr. Collins is available in two locations: Zephyrhills, 813-780-8160 and Tampa, 813-979-7707. v
