Rabbi’s Message
On May 3, parents of our Religious School students met with
Michael Melasky, Cantor Feibush, Gabi Levin, Chris Mason, Melo Taylor (NFTY
Regional Director) and me to discuss “What’s next?”
“What’s next?” refers to life after Bat/Bar Mitzvah. We discussed the
different ways young people can stay involved in Jewish life after their Bar/Bat
Mitzvah services. This is an exciting time--and understandably so. Here at Temple
Sholom, we put in a lot of effort to ensure that each child and family has a
meaningful Bar or Bat Mitzvah experience.
We also look at the bigger picture--helping our students create a lifelong
attachment to Judaism and the Jewish community. That is why we so appreciate our
two wonderful youth advisors, Gabi and Chris. Between them, they create fun-filled
and engaging programming for kids in K-12.
Two Wednesdays a month, our grade 7-10 students gather for dinner,
services and class. I teach our grade 10 Confirmation class and oversee the meeting
with our post-Confirmation class. (See our ‘What’s Next’ Guide for Parents on page 4)
Melo Taylor spoke at Wednesday’s meeting about the opportunities for our
kids in the broader Reform youth movement, including weekend retreats starting
with grade 6, as well as Reform Jewish summer camp. She also spoke of working to
connect youth groups in our area with each other for joint programming, which is
an appealing possibility.
I am delighted with the strides we have made in post-B’nai Mitzvah
retention--the vast majority of this year’s B’nai Mitzvah students are still
participating even after their Bar and Bat Mitzvah services. We still have a way to
go and I’m excited that we are working to ensure that we offer a variety of different
ways--from youth group to study to working in our Religious School to NFTY—so
our young people can stay engaged in Jewish life.
Thank you for your support of - and participation in our Temple community.
No matter where we are in our life’s journey, we all play a part to ensure that the
next generation finds being Jewish as meaningful as we do.
The comedian Sam Levenson used to tell the story about starting grade 1.
Bringing Sam to school on the first day, his mother told the teacher, “If my Sammy
misbehaves, hit the kid next to him. Sam learns by example.”
Our kids do learn by example - a gentler example, we hope, than the one
advocated by Sam’s mom. We know that when we demonstrate our joy and love for
being Jewish, it’s contagious!

Presidents’ Message
We’re more than a congregation, we’re a family.
I’ve worked in marketing for almost 30 years now and I know tag lines. I know when they are purely
aspirational and I know when they are an actual reflection of a brand. I know that our tag line is truly who we are
at Temple Sholom. We really are more than a congregation and our members do feel like family to me.
I’ve always felt this way, but it really hit home a few weeks ago after an impromptu conference call with
my co-presidents. Larry and Dora are like my siblings, all the good parts. If we sat in the backseat of a car together
there would be no punching or squealing as they complained that my sleeve was crossing the imaginary dividing
line. They have my back. They make me stronger. They also make me laugh and care - a lot.
Our board members and trustees have been members for some time, and many of them I count as dear
friends. They are like my favorite aunts and uncles. When things aren’t going well or I have a new idea, they provide
encouragement and function as sounding boards. They follow up with the extra nudge I need or the inspiration
that keeps me motivated.
Our committee heads and newer board members are like my crazy cousins who like to cook up new
adventures, do things differently and have a blast while doing it. There is nothing more fun than trying new things
and engaging new people, all in the pursuit of building a Jewish life and foundation.
I see Rabbi Groffman and Cantor Feibush as the parents, or maybe the grandparents (if I’m not too literal
about age), quietly and gently enabling each of us to do better, be better. They offer unconditional love with a
strong sense of history, legacy and hope for the future.
To further this sense of family, Larry, Dora and I want to change our annual Congregational Meeting into
a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Every year we have a congregational meeting where the budget and any new
strategic initiatives are shared. This year will be different. Our congregational meeting will be a family dinner to
honor all our amazing Temple Sholom volunteers. Larry, Dora and I will host the dinner as our way of thanking
each of you for all the heart and soul you have put into the activities and energy of our synagogue. Please join us
to be honored and appreciated on Wednesday, June 14, at 6:30 pm. Larry, Dora and I are already planning the
menu and recruiting our kids and spouses to help cook, serve and clean. Since we are siblings, however, there may
be a water fight in the kitchen as we clean up.

I remember my first day of Hebrew instruction as
though it were yesterday. Sitting within an Orthodox Cheder
in 3rd
Grade, surrounded by 25 other young children (both
boys and girls), I recall being instructed by my Moreh on
some of the consonants. What I do not recall was the lesson,
although I considered myself to be a good student. On this
particular day, however, “I took the day off.” When we were
given our homework assignment to study what we had been
taught and to review tomorrow’s lesson, I recall saying to my
mom – “I don’t even remember being there.” She ushered
me to Richie Gold’s apartment downstairs on the 6th
floor of
our apartment building where Richie sat with me to review
what I had missed.
So why am I writing this to you at this point in the
school year? Hebrew instruction has changed quite
dramatically over the last half century. The advent of
technology has allowed both educators and families to utilize
resources that were unavailable in the days of Richie Gold. As
we enter the summer and formal education is no longer part
of the program, parents and their children have an
opportunity to listen to and read both Hebrew and Prayer at
their own convenience so what had been learned in class still
remains front and center throughout our recess. To that
extent, please utilize the following resources below and any
that your child’s teacher may have given to you recently or
over the past year so your child’s skills remain balanced when
school resumes in the fall.
*Please note that a formal review of previously
learned material is always scheduled during the beginning of
the next school year as a refresher.

Go to our Synagogue’s Website and under the
heading ‘Learning’, open the Prayer Link for all the prayers
that your students are currently learning within our Program.

Resources and Free Hebrew Apps. The Program we
recommend for review is the Click-N-Read Free App for

On behalf of the teaching staff of Temple Sholom of
West Essex, have a wonderful summer, filling it with joy and
many positive memories with your children whom we have
been blessed to know, teach and love.
B’shalom,
Michael Melasky, Director of Education

We have a history of borrowing melodies, adding Hebrew words, and then calling it a Jewish tune. For
instance, Hatikva has origins in Die Moldau by Smetana, a zarzuela from Iberia, a Magyar folk song, an Italian
madrigal, and so forth. It was not until 1888 that Samuel Cohen set the words to the melody. So, when asked to
sing a traditional tune, I will usually reply with, Whose tradition?
We have created a tradition for the new generation. Inspired by my friend, Cantor Nancy Dubin, I ask each
B’nai Mitzvah student to choose a favorite song, and I will adapt it to Adon Olam as the closing hymn for the
Saturday service. These are choices from this past year:
Ethan Veller - All the Way Up by Fat Joe and Remy Ma
Marissa Edelman - Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson
Robert Reifenberg Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd
Perri Katz - The Greatest by Sia
Jack Vollero - The Oompa Loompa Song from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Marc Tiegel - Starboy by the Weeknd
Joseph Brewster - What the World Needs Now by Burt Bacharach and Hal David
Jason Calick - Closer by the Chainsmokers
Noah Weinberg - Don’t Wanna Know by Maroon 5
Sam Zichelli - Narwhals Are Awesome by JellyBug
Julia Stehr - Cold Water by Major Lazer
Justin Kingsnorth - Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson
Jack Flusser - The Cup Song (When I’m Gone) from Pitch Perfect
Ari Shapiro - The Rutherford Hayes Song by Mr. Beat
Noah Decker - The Theme from Friends by the Rembrandts
Sam Maarek - It’s Not Unusual by Tom Jones
Sadie Goldberg - The Theme from Friends by the Rembrandts
Anna Bauer - It’s a Small World by Robert and Richard Sherman
Griffen and Samantha Shapiro - The Schuyler Sisters from Hamilton
Zach Laden - Closing Time by Semisonic
Amaya Groffman - Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz
Dayton Friedberg - Shake It Off by Taylor Swift
These young Jewish adults are already beginning to shape the tradition of the future. I am looking
forward to seeing what their next steps will be. For this to happen, we need you to keep engaging our young
people at home. The Jewish people need you to be a partner to complement what happens inside the synagogue.
Will you be that partner?

Caring Connection
Todah rabah to Max Prince, grandson
of Temple members, Ben and Judy Tabs.
Ben is a regular volunteer on our Temple crew that helps
to serve lunch each month at Oasis in Paterson. Max
learned from his grandfather the various ways Oasis helps
the community so he decided to hold a food collection
drive. With the help of his Spanish teacher and classmates
from the Spanish class, Max spearheaded an effort where
he and his classmates collected over 7 bags of groceries.
The food was delivered and distributed last month by the
Oasis Food Closet which serves needy families from the
Paterson and nearby communities.

Social Action-End of Year Review
It was a busy year of projects, old and new, for Social action, and our "actions" have succeeded in making
an impact on people and places in need of help and kindness.
This September 2017, our Temple will begin its third year of volunteering to help make a difference for
the women and children of Oasis. Our volunteers are the reason for the success of our Temple's partnership with
Oasis.
Our Temple joined together as a group of ten eager volunteers to spend a day in November with Habitat
for Humanity in Newark. We measured and nailed sheet rock, cut and installed wood moldings among other
challenging but fun building projects.
Every year, in the month of May, Temple Sholom and Notre Dame Church partner to serve families helped
by The Interfaith Housing Coalition. Our volunteers, under the coordination of Shari Ritter, host, make and deliver
meals, or spend an overnight or two at the church to insure that for two weeks ,the families we help to sponsor
can feel the comforts of food, shelter and friendships.
The Mitzvah Project headed by Lisa Kolton and Stephanie Gerson was a winter clothing collection in
collaboration with the Religious school students which decorated the collection bins. Many garments and
accessories were collected and delivered to the Salvation Army in Montclair. Due to this effort of mitzvah,
Temple Sholom volunteers helped keep many individuals prepared for winter.
In February, Cycle for Survival, held at Equinox in Summit, is an annual event made possible by Temple
Sholom volunteers who either rode bikes or attended just to cheer our team on. This year it was organized and
headed by co-captains, Emily Goldberg and Debbie Nathanson. New team T-shirts were made possible by
Jennifer Friedberg and Suzanne Weinberg. Proceeds of this healthy and fun event went to Memorial Sloan
Kettering Cancer Center for research and treatment trials.
Oy vey! So maybe not so few projects! Our Committee wishes to extend our gratitude to all our Social
Action Temple volunteers for your generosity of time, effort, creativity, concerns and kindness that each of you
have bestowed upon those we have had the privilege to serve whether directly or indirectly:

Shout from the Rooftop
We have a really great thing going here at Temple
Sholom. It is so great that I wanted to shout about it from
the proverbial rooftop at the conclusion of the Sixth Grade
Shabbat Service in early May. Our Rabbi and Cantor set a
tone that was warm and inviting. The religious school
children demonstrated mastery of our central prayers and
understanding of our Jewish values. If ever there was a
time when I felt moved to pray, it was that evening.
I want this wonderful feeling to be open to others
way into the future. I want the Jews who move into the
West Essex area in the years to come to experience the
same joy my husband, Gerry and I feel each time we
worship and study with our congregation.
We can all insure that this will happen by including
Temple Sholom in our estate planning. Think about it. It is
important. It is easy. It is open to everyone regardless of
age or financial means. Please don’t delay.
Contact me ([email protected] ) if you have any
questions about the various ways to leave a legacy gift.
And please let us know of your commitment so that we can
include you in our Legacy Circle.

Legacy
As the 2016-2017 year comes to a close, we
thought we would recap what we’ve accomplished as a
Committee.
In no particular order, we:
delivered 15 challahs
organized a new member dinner
attended a workshop
met 4 times to plan and talk
started a buddy program
volunteered time at the Religious School Open Houses
kept the congregation informed through the Shofar
conversed with prospective members via phone and
email
created a video “montage” of who we are for the
Temple website – https://www.sholom.net/
membership/
We each helped to accomplish some part of the
above, and we did so with the support of our Family
Buddies, Va’ad and Executive Committee, Temple Staff and
Office. Thank you to everyone!
We’d love for you to hop on board with us if you
feel you have even one hour to spare. Please reach out to
us to discuss.

Threads of Our Heritage
By Sarah Brewster
The deep purple threads interweave
Until there exists a connection between
A cloth of violet, elegantly plain
And one of lavender hue, where shimmering silver interlaces the
butterflies that reign
With a crisp white ink on the violet sea
Like a single cloud drifting across the night sky
I pen the word “Shabbat” delicately
Knowing that in the beauty of the glowing candles, it will see many pairs of eyes
The scalloped edges, an elegant design
The red threading of words that they said were a crime
The delicate cloth in an innocent white
Yet they destroyed your innocence in the shrouded night
Your sisters’ hearts interlaced into each thread
Almost beating, almost glowing, almost deep crimson red
Your mother, your father, L’Dor Vador
The men say the blessings, though the women make the bread we so adore
Though the time between us spans seven decades
And our homes are oceans away
We are connected until time’s closing hour
By the threads of our heritage
The Amud Aish Memorial Museum and Kleinman Holocaust Education Center's
Third Annual Student Visual Arts and Literacy Contest!
This year’s theme is “ דלרלחלדל ל שלולדלדלםלדל ילדלםליל ל - Born to Live; Remembering the Children of the Holocaust.” The program
includes a curated collection of six items that belonged to children who left their homes to escape Nazi persecution,
portraying the Holocaust through the eyes of children who survived. Artifacts and letters are preserved and accessible,
giving insight into the fragility of their worlds and the potential of each and every individual. Students are invited to
participate by submitting either a Written or Visual Arts response to one of the artifacts.
Congratulations to our member Sarah Brewster
for winning this year’s contest, below is her poem Sarah's Poem compares the Challah cover she made for her Bat Mitzvah
with the Holocaust survivor's Challah cover.

HOLIDAY GREETINGS LISTING IN SHOFAR 3 HOLIDAYS/$18
This year we will again be printing a page in which you can insert your own Rosh Hashanah - New Year’s greeting to your fellow members and friends as well as for Hanukkah and Passover. This is a most appropriate way of sending your personal greetings to all our congregants. The cost will be $18 for all three listings. Look for information in the mail over the summer.

Contributions to the funds of the congregation are always
appropriate, welcome and provide important revenue.
Tzedakah is very much a part of Jewish tradition, especially
when it is given to mark celebrations, to offer best wishes for recovery from illness (refuah sheleimah), offer condolences,
and at yahrzeit time, to remember loved ones. These gifts are put to constructive use to enhance the programs of our
congregation.
