QUICK FACTS
TEMPLE VS. PENN STATE» Temple and Penn State will be meeting for the 93rd time in the history of the two programs. The Owls hold a 60-32 advantage all-time and have won seven straight in the series.» The two teams last met in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, with the Owls winning 66-64 in a thriller to advance to the third round.» Prior to 2011, the squads had last squared off on Dec. 5, 2009 at the Liacouras Center, with the Owls coming out on top of a defensive struggle with a 45-42 win. » Last time the teams met at the Bryce Jordan Center, Temple won 65-59 on Dec. 6, 2008. All-time, Penn State has a slight, 22-21 edge in games played in State College.» Temple and Penn State have never played in the NIT against each other, but have two NCAA match-ups, the other coming in 2001 when the Owls won 84-72 against the Nittany Lions in the Sweet 16.
LAST MEETING: TEMPLE 66, PENN STATE 64 (MARCH 17, 2011)» Junior guard Juan Fernandez proved he was the man the Owls wanted with the ball with the game on the line, sinking a jumper on the right side of the key with 0.4 seconds left to give seventh-seeded Temple a thrilling 66-64 win over 10th-seeded Penn State in the NCAA Tournament second round at the McKale Center. » Fernandez had the hot hand all day for Temple, scoring a season-high 23 points to help advance the Owls in the tournament.» The scoring duo of Fernandez and junior guard Ramone Moore led the Owls with 23 points each. Fernandez (8-13, 23 pts, 3 asts) missed his first three of the game and was on fire from there, connecting on his next six shots. He posted 17 of his 23 points in the first half. Sophomore guard Khalif Wyatt joined the pair as a double-figure scorer, adding 10 points off of the bench.» Senior forward Lavoy Allen led the pack with 11 rebounds, his eighth straight game with double-digit boards.» Senior guard Talor Battle led the Nittany Lions with 23 points. Sophomore guard Tim Frazier and senior forward David Jackson added 15 and 14 points respectively to round out the PSU double-figure scorers. » After PSU went up 4-2, Fernandez sparked a 5-0 run by completing an old-fashioned three-point play and connecting with Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson on a fast break for a highlight reel one-handed dunk to put TU up 7-4 with 17:18 to play.» Penn State jumped out to a nine point lead on an 14-2 run led by Battle who, after a jumper by Brooks, knocked down two treys to give the Nittany Lions a 14-9 lead with 14:36 left in the period. A floater in the lane by Fernandez looked to slow the Nittany Lions down, but Brooks slammed home a put-back and Battle sunk another three to make it a 20-11 game with 11:57 left.» Temple inched closer with threes by Fernandez and Wyatt, coming within five (24-19) with just over eight minutes to play. The Nittany Lions managed to keep the Owls down, however, answering with a three-point play by Frazier to keep it an eight point game, 27-19 with 7:58 left.» Fernandez and Moore were the spark Temple needed to get back in the game, each tallying four points in an 11-2 run that gave the Owls a 30-29 lead, and they took a 35-33 lead into the break.» Penn State regained the lead early in the second half, utilizing the three to tie the game and eventually taking a three-point lead, 41-38 with 15:59 to play.» Neither team could break away and it was still Moore who fueled the Temple attack, scoring eight straight Temple points includ-ing a three at 3:54 to give the Owls a 58-57 lead. Four more lead changes occurred with the sides trading buckets until a block by Allen - easily the defensive play of the game - on Battle gave the Owls the ball with a 62-61 lead.» Fernandez picked up the loose ball and was fouled, going to the line for a one-and-one and hitting both to give Temple a 64-61 lead with 28-seconds left. PSU's Battle hit a lengthy three on the next possession, tying the game up at 64-64 but giving the Owls the ball with 11.4-seconds remaining.» Temple came out of the huddle and the inbounds was to Fernandez, who took the pass and drove down the left side of the lane. Stopped momentarily by Frazier, he pulled up and nailed a 15-foot jumper to leave Penn State no chance of redemption.

» It was a fight all game long and nearly a career performance for sophomore Quinton Rose, but seventh-seeded Temple came up short in an 89-81 loss to second-seeded and #11/14 Wichita State in the Aaron's American Athletic Conference Championship quarterfinals. » Rose, who finished with 25 points, kept the Owls in the game for most of the second half, but they could never get a tie or a lead on the Shockers. » Temple kept the game within three possessions for nearly the entire contest, and was usually within one or two.» The Owls' largest deficit was 12 points with just under five minutes remaining, but they battled again with an 11-2 run to make it a three-point game at 2:23.» Over those final two minutes, the Shockers made 11-of-16 free throws to hold off Temple, who made three field goals before missing its final three attempts.» Temple shot well most of the game, finishing at 51 percent to Wichita State's 48 percent and hitting 11-of-24 3-pointers.» Josh Brown and Shizz Alston, Jr. scored 15 points each, with Alston hitting 4-of-8 threes and Brown draining 3-of-4.» Wichita State's Landry Shamet led his team with 24 points and made six of eight three-point attempts.» Temple never led or tied the game in the opening frame, but also never trailed by more than nine.» The Owls' three-point shooting kept them in the game throughout the half, as they drained 7-of-12 from long range (58.3 percent), getting two apiece from Alston and Brown.» Three post players for Temple got in early foul trouble, with Obi Enechionyia, De'Vondre Perry and Damion Moore all picking up two fouls in the first nine minutes.» With 9:32 left in the half, the Shockers got their largest lead of nine, 25-16, but it lasted less than 30 seconds as Brown soon drilled a three, starting a 10-2 run for the Owls.» Capped by an Ernest Aflakpui layup at 6:36, the run got Temple within in a point, 27-26.» It was no more than a two-possession game the rest of the half, and the Owls were back within one with 1:51 to go, but the Shockers scored the final five points to take a 42-36 lead into the break.» Just under three minutes into the second half, the Owls got it back to a one-point game on a pair of Brown free throws after a flagrant foul on Wichita State.» The Shockers answered with an 11-2 run, taking their first double-digit lead of 10 points, 55-45 at 13:43 as Temple went over four minutes without a field goal.» Rose then took over the game for the Owls, scoring 14 of their next 16 points in a four-minute stretch and getting Temple within two on three occasions.» After freshman J.P. Moorman II made it a two-point game for a fourth time in the half, the Shockers used a 13-3 run for their largest lead of 12, 76-64 at 4:38.» The Owls had one big run left in them to get back within three just two minutes later, but Wichita State sealed the deal at the stripe.
Nate Pierre-Louis Named to AAC All-Rookie Team; Rose and Enechionyia Also HonoredAn impressive debut season has led to a big honor for freshman guard Nate Pierre-Louis, who was named to the 2018 Amer-ican Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team. Sophomore Quinton Rose, named All-Rookie a year ago, earned All-Conference Honorable Mention selection while senior Obi Enechionyia was named the AAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Pierre-Louis began seeing quality minutes starting in the Owls' game at Georgia on Dec. 22, and has made a huge impact since then. He then had a true breakout game in his first career start against Memphis on Jan. 13, exploding for a career-high 23 points and was named the AAC Rookie of the Week. In a big win vs. UConn on Jan. 28, Pierre-Louis came off the bench for 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, and in another big win vs. #16/16 Wichita State, he scored 11 off the bench. He tied for team-high honors with 13 points in the Owls' loss to Houston on Feb. 18, and scored 11 in a win vs. UCF on Feb. 25.
In AAC games, Pierre-Louis finished as the Owls' third-leading scorer with 9.9 points per game in just 20.4 minutes per game. His overall extrapolated scoring average (over 40 minutes) of 18.3 points per game leads all Temple players.
Rose has been the Owls' leading scorer nearly all season, and is averaging 15.1 points per game to rank seventh in the AAC. He also ranks fifth in the league with 1.6 steals per game, leading the Owls with 48 total steals. Rose has scored 20 or more points in nine games, with 19 points in two other games. The Philadelphia Big 5 named Rose its Player of the Week on Feb. 12 after he scored a game-high 20 points and recorded a season-high four steals in a win at USF, and led all players with 23 points in a win vs. ECU. Rose was also twice named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll.
Brown Sets Career Mark for Games Played Redshirt senior Josh Brown surpassed Lynn Greer for the most games played as a Temple Owl when he took the court in the Owls' most recent game on Friday, March 9 against #11/14 Wichita State for the 138th time. Brown, like Greer (1997-2002), played games during a fifth season. Brown saw action in fives games in 2016-17 as he was trying to come back from an achilles injury, but had to sit out the remainder of the season. Greer played six games as a sophomore in 1998-99 before sitting out due to injury.

NIT ExperienceTemple redshirt senior guard Josh Brown and senior forward Obi Enechionyia are the only two Owls with NIT experience. Brown came off the bench to score 11 points in home wins over Bucknell and George Washington in 2015 and averaged 7.0 ppg and 1.5 apg over 21.8 mpg. Enechionyia scored his season high of 17 points and tied his season high with eight rebounds against Miami (Fla.) in the NIT semifinals. He averaged 8.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 21 mpg over four NIT games in 2014-15.
Getting to the Line + WsTemple is a perfect 12-0 this season when making more FTs than its opponent. The only problem is the Owls rank 331st out of 351 NCAA Division I teams in made free throws. The nation's #1 team, Virginia, has only 336 free throws and ranks 336th in the category.
For ThreeSenior forward Obi Enechionyia needs just one more three-pointer to become the eighth Temple player to make 200 threes during his career.
Strength of ScheduleNoted for its non-conference schedule strength since the days of Hall of Fame head coach John Chaney, the 2017-18 Temple Owls continue the tradition with their strength of schedule rated ninth nationally by the NCAA (3/11). When asked during his tenure about scheduling tough opponents, current head coach Fran Dunphy explains "John Chaney makes our schedule."
Temple vs. the Polls With the Owls' upset of No. 16/16 Wichita State in overtime on Feb. 1, Temple has now defeated a Top 25 opponent for 11 straight seasons. The Owls have a total of 67 wins against ranked foes, including taking down Top 25 opponents No. 25/RV Florida and No. 19/17 West Virginia on consecutive days (Nov. 24-25) for the first time in school history to win the 2016 NIT Season Tip-Off in Brooklyn.
When Temple defeated No. 3/3 Syracuse on Dec. 12, 2012 (83-79), it marked the fifth straight season in which the unranked Owls had taken down a Top 10 opponent. That feat did not occur during the 2013-14 season, but Temple has achieved it in six of the last nine seasons with a 77-52 defeat of No. 10/10 Kansas on Dec. 22, 2014 at the Wells Fargo Center.
Nail-Biting HabitTemple has played in a number of close contests this season, with 12 being decided by five or fewer points. The Owls are 7-5 in those games. Seven Temple games have been decided in the final seconds, with three ending on buzzer-beaters.
Dec. 30 (at Houston): Temple climbed back from a 15-point deficit with seven minutes to go only to fall 76-73. Shizz Alston, Jr. missed a three-pointer at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime. Jan. 4 (#19/20 Cincinnati): The Bearcats' Jacob Evans drained a jumper with one second to play for the 55-53 win.Jan. 10 (at SMU): Josh Brown's five-foot jump hook with 1.2 seconds left lifted Temple to a 66-64 win, ending the Mustangs' 33-game home win streak.Jan. 13 (Memphis): Trailing 72-70 in overtime, the Tigers' Kareem Brewton, Jr. nailed a long three-pointer with 0.7 seconds to play to lift Memphis to the victory.Jan. 17 (Tulsa): Josh Brown again delivered for the Owls. This time, the redshirt senior captain made a layup following a key offensive rebound and assist from J.P. Moorman II to provide the deciding basket in a 59-58 win.Feb. 1 (#16/16 Wichita State): Shizz Alston, Jr. made a layup with seven seconds to go in regulation to tie the game, and Obi Enechionyia's two free throws with 18 seconds left in overtime sealed the win for the Owls, who played solid defense on the Shockers' final possessions of the second half and the OT period.March 8 (Tulane): Back-to-back Cameron Reynolds three-pointers put Tulane within one, 78-77 with 32 seconds to go. Shizz Alston, Jr. made a pair of free throws, and the Green Wave missed their final attempt from long range with five seconds left. They fouled Brown just before the buzzer, who sank 2-of-2 for the final score.
Passing ProwessWith three assists vs. Tulane in the AAC First Round, senior Josh Brown moved into the Top 10 all-time at Temple in career assists, now standing in 10th place with 385. Brown needs four more assists to tie for ninth all-time (9th place, Jim Mc-Loughlin - 389, 1979-84).
All-Time Winningest Coach in Big 5 HistoryWith Temple’s win at UCF on Feb. 6, 2016, head coach Fran Dunphy surpassed former Owl coach John Chaney to become the all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history. Dunphy, who became the fifth coach to win 200 games at two schools while taking each to six NCAA Tournaments, is the one of nine coaches to have won 200 or more games at a Big 5 school since the city league was formed in 1955. Below is the list of 200-win coaches in city-series history.

Starting StatUntil the Memphis game on Jan. 13, Temple head coach Fran Dunphy had utilized the same starting five of Ernest Aflakpui, Shizz Alston, Jr., Josh Brown, Obi Enechionyia and Quinton Rose for 16 games in a row to start the season. It was the longest stretch to open the season with the same five starters in Dunphy's 12-year tenure.
The 2010-11 and 2006-07 Temple teams used the same five starters in 13 games before both squads made a change in Game 14. The last Temple team to open a season with the same starting five for more than 13 games was the 2003-04 team that used the same five starters for the first 21 games. In Game 22, Brian Polk replaced an injured Antywane Robinson in the first five. This season, Nate Pierre-Louis replaced Quinton Rose in Game 17, but the lineup has been back to the original same five since then with the exception of Game 24 (ECU) when Enechionyia had the flu (replaced by De'Vondre Perry).

500 ClubWith a team-high nine rebounds vs. Tulane on Dec. 28, senior forward Obi Enechionyia became just the 43rd Temple play-er to reach the 500 career rebound plateau. With 610 rebounds currently, Enechionyia now ranks in the Top 25 all-time, standing in 24th place. He needs three more rebounds to move up a spot into a tie for 23rd.
Green Goblin Lifts TemplePhiladelphia Eagles starting CB Jalen Mills, a.k.a the Green Goblin, talked to the Temple men's basketball team prior to the Owls' win over UCF on Feb. 25. The Eagles standout's inspirational talk may have been the reason the Cherry and White jumped all over the Golden Knights as the Owls scored the first 16 points of the half en route to a 75-56 win.
Offense Came AliveFor the first time since the 2006-07 season, Temple scored 80 or more points in four straight games (1/28 - 2/7), finishing with a season-high 90 points in a win vs. ECU on Feb. 7. The 90-point effort was the first for Temple since the opening game of 2016-17, a 97-92 OT win vs. La Salle. In another first since that La Salle win the Owls had six players reach double figures in scoring vs. ECU, led by 23 points from sophomore Quinton Rose.
Leonard's Time to ShineSenior Steve Leonard earned his first-ever starting spot on Senior Day vs. UCF, and made the most of it. With just three career points heading into the game, Leonard hit his first two shots from long range, setting the tone and scoring the first six points of Temple's 16-0 opening run. He finished with those six points in just five minutes of action - both career highs.
Moorman Achieves Rare Freshman Rebounding Feat J.P. Moorman II has had two double-digit rebounding efforts this season, making him the first freshman to achieve that feat since Keith Butler in 2002-03. When Moorman recorded his first double-digit effort with a career-high 12 rebounds in a win vs. ECU on Feb. 7, he added 11 points for his first career double-double, making him the first freshman to record a points-rebounds double-double since Lavoy Allen did so in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Most recently, Moorman pulled down a game-high 10 boards in a win vs. UCF on Feb. 25. For AAC games, Moorman averaged 4.3 rebounds per game to rank third on the team.
Double Digit ComebackFor the first time in 2017-18, Temple overcame a double-digit deficit in a win as the Owls found themselves down by as many as 12 to #16/16 Wichita State late in the first half. Temple trailed by 10 just past the 15-minute mark of the second half, but took a lead seven minutes later after a 16-5 run. With 2:19 left in OT, the Owls trailed by five (79-74) but did not allow the Shockers to score again.
Turnaround TaleTemple had a 61-point turnaround in its back-to-back games at Cincinnati and vs. UConn. The Owls fell at #9/8 Cincinnati, 75-52, on Jan. 24 before rebounding for an 85-57 win over UConn at the Liacouras Center on Jan. 28. It was the largest turnaround by a Temple team since the 1951-52 season when the Owls defeated Glassboro State, 114-47 on Dec. 17, 1951 and then dropped a 60-43 decision to Fordham to account for an 84-point swing.
Temple Signs 6-Year old Mason WyckoffOn Friday, Jan. 19, Temple men's basketball coach Fran Dunphy announced the signing of six year-old Mason Wyckoff to a "NLI". A native of Bristol, Pa., Mason's signing is part of Temple's involvement with the Team Impact program. Mason battles a condition called Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID), which is a condition that prevents his immune sys-tem from functioning properly. Mason is a born fighter, and spent the first year of his life in and out of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. When Mason was just 14 months old, he started to get IVIG infusions monthly, in addition to subcutaneous infusions done at home weekly and a daily regiment of vitamins and medication. But Mason knows that strength comes from adversity, and he has truly become an inspiration to all that have the opportunity to know him. Side by side with his service dog, Hero, Mason wears his heart on his sleeve, and always makes sure to think of others first. He refuses to be defined by his diagnosis, and loves to run around outside and have fun like any other six year-old.
Clutch BrownTemple senior guard Josh Brown could have a new nickname - "Clutch." Twice in eight days, and for the third and fourth times in his career, Brown hit the game-winner or go-ahead shot in a Temple win. In the Owls' 66-64 victory at SMU on Jan. 10, Brown hit the game-winner for a third time in his career. He hit just two field goals in the contest, but the second was the dagger as he elevated for a jump hook with just 1.2 seconds left. On Jan. 17 in Temple's 59-58 win vs. Tulsa, Brown got an assist from freshman J.P. Moorman II for the go-ahead jumper with 28 seconds left that stood as the final score.
Brown had previously hit a game-winning jumper with 2.6 seconds left in a 55-53 road victory at #23/24 UConn on Jan. 5, 2016, and made the game-winning shot with 2.4 seconds left in a 61-60 win at Memphis on Feb. 7, 2015. The first three of Brown's game-winners were on the road, and his most recent at SMU not only gave Temple its first road win of the season, but snapped a 33-game home win streak for the Mustangs.
Year-Long Free Throw StreakJunior guard Shizz Alston, Jr. set a program record with 52 consecutive free throws made from Dec. 28, 2016 to Dec. 6, 2017. The previous record of 49 in a row was set by Hall of Famer Lynn Greer from March 8-25, 2001. When Alston hit 6-of-6 free throws in the Owls' win vs. Wisconsin on Dec. 6, he surpassed Greer's mark.
Alston missed his first of two free throw attempts vs. Saint Joseph's on Dec. 9, but did lead all players with 20 points in the game.

Home Sweet HomeThe Liacouras Center has proven to be a tremendous home court advantage. Since the arena opened its doors in 1997, the Owls have posted a 214-74 (.743) all-time record, and set the record for wins in a single season with 16 in 2014-15.
Temple is 120-36 (.769) at home since the start of the 2007-08 campaign. To the right is a list of 10-win seasons in the building (bold under Fran Dunphy).
Saving the Best for LastWhen Temple tipped off against Old Dominion in the first round of the Gildan Charles-ton Classic they officially became the last team at the NCAA Division I level to start its 2017-18 season. The November 16 start is the latest by a Temple team in the Fran Dunphy era. It is the latest since the Owls fell to second round opponent Auburn at the Liacouras Center on Nov. 19, 2004.
2017 Gildan Charleston Classic ChampionsFor the first time in three appearances at the tournament, Temple won the 2017 Gildan Charleston Classic and now stands at 7-2 overall (2-1 in 2008-09 and 2013-14; 3-0 in 2017-18). The championship game vs. Clemson was a rematch of the 2008 title game, but this time it was the Owls who bested the Tigers, winning 67-60. The regular season tournament win was the second straight for Temple, which won the 2016 NIT Season Tip-Off in dramatic fashion a year ago. The Owls toppled back-to-back Top 25 opponents for that championship, rallying to defeat No. 25/RV Florida State on Thanksgiving Day before winning 89-86 against No. 19/17 West Virginia a day later.
Last year's regular season tournament title was the first for Temple since 1998-99 when the Owls went 2-0 at Madison Square Garden against Georgetown and Wake Forest to win the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. All-time, Temple is now 95-71 in regular season tournament games.
Ring of Honor Added Two More at Owls' Home Game vs. MemphisTemple honored two of its all-time greats at halftime of the Saint Joseph's game, and honored two more against Memphis on Jan. 13. The first two to join the Temple Basketball Ring of Honor in 2017-18 were Nate Blackwell (1983-87) and Angelo Musi (1940-42). Saturday's honorees were Jim Usilton, Sr. (1926-39), who coached Temple for 13 seasons including the 1938 NIT championship, and Ollie Johnson (1969-72), who led the Owls in scoring and rebounding as a junior and senior.
Usilton was the first coach to put Temple basketball on the map when he guided the 1937-38 team to a 23-2 record and the NIT Championship. It was one of 13 seasons that he patrolled the sidelines, compiling a 205-79 overall record from 1926-39. His win total ranks fourth all-time in school history while his 72.2 winning percentage tops the list of all Owl coaches.
One of only six Owls to average a double-double for his career, Johnson helped lead the Cherry and White to two NCAA Tournaments in his three seasons. A member of the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame, Johnson led Temple in scoring and rebounding as a junior and senior. An All-Big 5 First Team player as a senior in 1971-72, Johnson averaged a career-best 16.9 ppg and grabbed 9.8 rpg in leading the Owls to the NCAAs. Johnson's 10.1 career rebound average ranks fifth in school history. Drafted in the NBA's second round in 1972, Johnson played 10 seasons and averaged 7.7 ppg in his career.
Enechionyia, Rose Honored at Gildan Charleston ClassicSenior forward Obi Enechionyia was named the 2017 Gildan Charleston Classic MVP, while sophomore guard Quinton Rose notched the first double-double of his career against Clemson and also earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Enechionyia averaged 15.3 points per game, 7.3 rebounds per game and 1.3 blocks per game in the three wins for the Owls. Rose's numbers were equally impressive, as he averaged 16.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg and 4.0 assists per game.
Late HomecomingTemple's first home game of the 2017-18 season finally occurred when the Owls hosted Wisconsin on Dec. 6. It marked the program's latest debut in its on-campus arena since the Owls defeated #18 Fresno State, 76-61, in the Liacouras Center's first-ever game on Dec. 9, 1997. Only six Division I teams have the same or a later start at home than Temple - Alabama St. – 12/12/17, Ark.-Pine Bluff – 1/13/18, Coppin St. – 12/6/17, Mississippi Val. – 1/1/2018, Prairie View – 12/29/2017 and Texas Southern – 1/1/18.
Magic Number 70The numbers don't lie - Temple almost always wins when it can reach the 70-point mark. The Owls have gone 26-7 since the beginning of the 2016-17 season when scoring at least 70 points.
Khalif Wyatt Added to Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona (Winner League)Former Temple guard Khalif Wyatt has been added to the Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona of the Irael Winner League for the remainder of the 2017-18 season. Wyatt, who starred for Temple from 2009-2013, had previously played for Hapoel Holon of the Israel Winner League, where he was the squad's second-leading scorer (18.8 ppg.) during the 2016-17 season. In 2015-16, Wyatt played at Hapoel Eilat where in 37 Winner League games he averaged 15.1 points, 4.4 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. He helped lead Hapoel Eilat to the league semifinals, and was voted Eurobasket.com All-Israeli League Honorable Mention and to the All-Star Game.
At Temple, Wyatt was the named the 2012-13 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, leading the Owls to three consecutive A-10 titles and to two NCAA Second Round appearances. He finished his career with 1,576 points to rank 13th on Temple's all-time scoring list.
Going OTTemple is 61-50 all-time in overtime games and 19-7 in head coach Fran Dunphy’s 12 seasons at the helm. The Owls’ OT win over La Salle on Nov. 11, 2016 was their first overtime game in a season opener (fourth overall) since a 73-67 victory over Penn at the Palestra on Nov. 14, 2011. It was also the ninth time the two Big 5 rivals played an overtime game. La Salle is tied with Saint Joseph’s as Temple’s most frequent overtime opponent.

The Ratio Favors Shizz and BrownWith career assist/turnover ratio averag-es of 2.28 and 2.25, junior Shizz Alston, Jr. and senior Josh Brown rank sixth and seventh all-time at Temple, respectively. Howard Evans (1986-89) is the Owls' all-time career leader in A/TO ratio at 3.12. Also on that list is Levan Alston (1994-96), Shizz's father, in 10th place with a ratio of 1.88.
Over 32 games last season, Alston had a team-leading 131 assists to just 48 turnovers for a 2.73 assist/turnover ratio to rank second in the American Athletic Conference and ninth all-time at Temple in a single season for A/TO ratio. Temple Athletics Hall of Famer Pepe Sanchez holds the single-season record for A/TO ratio at 3.86 in 1999-2000. In 2017-18, Brown has dished 107 assists and committed 55 turnovers (1.95), while Alston has dished 98 assists and committed 51 turnovers (1.92).
Mascot Double Trouble: Hooter and StellaTemple Athletics has both a traditional and a live mascot cheering on its teams, as Hooter the Owl and Stella can both often be found on the sidelines. To honor Temple’s beginning as a night school for ambitious young people, the nocturnal owl was adopted as its mascot. The owl represents wisdom and knowledge and is known for being perceptive, resource-ful and courageous. Hooter the Owl is a part of Temple’s Spirit Squad, making appearances games, alumni events and more. Each February, mascots from all over the city of Philadelphia come to Temple to celebrate Hooter's birthday at a home basketball game, which will take place this season on Sunday, Feb. 18 against Houston.
Stella, a great horned owl, began her career as Temple’s live mascot in 2013. Though she’s small—just 2 feet tall and only 3 pounds—Stella is a mighty predator, with an impressive 60-inch wingspan and talons capable of crushing prey with 28 pounds of force per square inch. She resides in the Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, Pa., where she also is a wildlife conservation teacher. Stella originally hails from Washington state. Her favorite foods include rodents, rabbits and snakes.
For ThreeTemple has made at least one three-pointer in 736 consecutive games. The last time the Owls did not make a three-point-er in a game was February 1, 1996. Temple missed all 16 three-point attempts that day in dropping a 59-35 decision to #1 UMass at McGonigle Hall. Temple led the American Athletic Conference last season with 9.0 three-pointers made per game, and ranks fourth in 2017-18 with 8.3 three-pointers made per game.
Two Elite Eight Men’s Basketball Teams Honored in 2017-18Temple Athletics celebrated the anniversaries of two Elite Eight teams this season. For the team’s Jan. 28 game against UConn, the 1992-93 Temple Owls were back at the Liacouras Center to celebrate their 25th Anniversary. That squad, under the direction of Hall of Fame coach John Chaney, posted a 20-13 overall record. Led by juniors Aaron McKie (20.6 ppg) and Eddie Jones (17.0 ppg), that Temple team was the seventh seed in the West Region. The Owls defeated 10th-seed Missouri, 75-61, and 15-seed Santa Clara, 68-57, to advance to the Sweet 16. On Wednesday, Feb. 1, the 1987-88 team was honored on their 30th Anniversary at halftime of the Owls’ win against #16/16 Wichita State. Inducted into the Philadelphia Big 5 in 2015, the 1987-88 team finished as the Associated Press' #1 ranked team and posted a 32-2 overall record and perfect 18-0 conference mark. Under the direction of Chaney, who would be named National Coach of the Year, the Owls won their first 14 games before suffering a heartbreaking one-point loss at eighth-ranked UNLV. Temple would enter the NCAA Tournament on a 15-game win streak, and the top-seeded Owls then defeated Lehigh (87-73), Georgetown (74-53) and Richmond (69-47) to advance to the Elite Eight. There the Owls fell to fifth-ranked Duke, 63-53.
Blackwell and Musi Added to Temple Basketball Ring of Honor on December 9Temple honored two of its all-time greats at halftime of the Saint Joseph's game on Dec. 9 as Nate Blackwell (1983-87) and Angelo Musi (1940-42) were the first in 2017-18 to join the Temple Basketball Ring of Honor.
A third team All-American as a senior (1986-87), Blackwell scored 1,708 points (9th on all-time list), dished 533 assists (4th all-time), and ranks fourth on the school's career free throw percentage list (.828). His senior year's free throw percentage of 90.4 percent is the single-season school record. A two-time All-District and All-Big 5, Blackwell was named the 1987 Big 5 MVP and Atlantic 10 Player of the Year. The 1985 A-10 Championship MVP, he has been a part of six Temple regular season titles and four A-10 Championships as a player and assistant coach. The Big 5 Hall of Famer was selected in the second round pick of the 1987 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs.
An honorable mention All-American and All-East selection as a senior in 1941-42, Musi was a two-sport athlete at Temple, captaining both the men's basketball and baseball teams. A three-time all-city selection, the 5-9 guard would go on to serve as the captain of the Philadelphia Warriors team that won the 1947 Basketball Association of America Championship (pre-dates the NBA).
Temple Student-Athletes Set Record Fall Semester GPARecords are made to be broken and Temple University did just that with a record-setting fall semester in the classroom. The 500-plus Owl student-athletes combined for a 3.13 grade point average, marking the highest on record for the fall semester. It also marked the sixth straight semester with a combined GPA above a 3.10 and the 12th straight semester above a 3.0. Temple student-athletes were enrolled in 94 different majors/programs in the Fall 2017 semester. They com-bined for a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher in 62 different majors led by Pharmaceutical Science (4.0), Anthropology (3.93), Mathematics (3.91), Undeclared-Tyler School of Art (3.89) and Theater (3.88).
Each class of student-athletes earned a combined 3.0 semester GPA led by those holding senior (90+ credits) status, who posted a 3.18 GPA. Additionally, 10 student-athletes were enrolled in eight different graduate programs and combined for a 3.44 GPA. Individually, 64.4 percent of Temple student-athletes earned a 3.0+ GPA during the fall semester, marking the sixth consecutive semester that the Owls topped the 60 percent threshold. Thirteen teams had 50 percent or more of their rosters earn 3.0 GPAs during the semester.

One of 25 active NCAA Division I coach-es with 500 victories, Fran Dunphy is in his 12th season at the helm of the Temple men's basketball program in 2017-18. The all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 his-tory, Dunphy is also just
the fifth coach to win 200 at two different Division I programs while also taking both schools to six or more NCAA Tourna-ments. He has joined Lou Henson (New Mexico, Illinois), Rick Pitino (Kentucky, Louisville), Eddie Sutton (Arkansas, Oklaho-ma State) and Roy Williams (Kansas, North Carolina) in this elite club. A part of Big 5 Basketball for the last six decades, Dun-phy starred at La Salle as a player (1967-70) and served on the Explorer staff as an assistant coach before embarking on a 17-year stint as the head coach of the Penn Quakers (1989-06). He became the first person to serve as the head men's basket-ball coach at two Philadelphia Big 5 institutions when he took over the reins of the Temple program from Hall of Fame coach John Chaney on April 10, 2006. All he has done at Temple is win. Having earned back-to-back American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year hon-ors in 2014-15 and 2015-16, Dunphy ranks third on the school's all-time coaching win list with a 247-151 record while guiding the Owls to seven NCAA Tournaments, five conference titles and a trip to the 2015 NIT Semifinals in his 11 years at the helm. His Temple teams have defeated seven Top 10 teams in his tenure and have appeared in the Top 25 during 24 weeks. Dunphy recorded his historic 500th coaching win in im-peccable fashion during the 2014-15 season by knocking off Memphis, 80-75, in the American Athletic Conference Quar-terfinal round on March 13. His overall record stands at 557-314 which includes 17 20-win seasons, 16 NCAA Tournament appearances, 14 conference championships, eight Big 5 titles and one NIT trip. Named Philadelphia Big 5 Coach of the Year in four of his 10 seasons at Temple, Dunphy led his second Owl squad on a late-season run to the Atlantic 10 Championship. He guid-ed the Cherry and White to a 21-13 overall mark in 2007-08, in-cluding a second place A-10 regular season finish with an 11-5 conference record. He followed that by directing his charges in 2008-09 to a 22-12 record, 11-5 in league play, and another conference championship. The 2009-10 season is one that will go down as one of the best in Temple lore. Picked tied for fifth in the A-10 preseason poll, Dunphy motivated his charges to their first A-10 regular season title (9th overall) since 2002 with a 14-2 record. The 2010 A-10 and NABC District Coach of the Year brought the Owls back into the national spotlight with the pro-gram's first national ranking since 2001, with the team staying in the polls for 13 consecutive weeks. His Owls would go on to become just the second A-10 team to win three consecutive conference championships while also posting just the fifth perfect Philadelphia Big 5 season in the program's history. The number one accomplishment achieved by the 2009-10 Temple team, that finished the season with a #12 ranking in the Associated Press poll, was its 29 victories (against six defeats), which ranks third in the school's history. In 2010-11, Dunphy led the Owls to a 26-8 record, in-cluding another 14-2 mark in A-10 play, and a fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. This time the Owls, the 7-seed in West Region, defeated 10th-seeded Penn State, 66-64, in the second round for the program's first NCAA win since 2001.
The Cherry and White game second-seeded San Diego State all they could handle in the next game before falling to the #5/6-ranked Aztecs, 71-64, in double-overtime. It was a great season for Temple as the Owls were ranked among the nation's Top 25 for eight weeks during the season, climbing as high as #19 in the January 10 Associated Press poll. The Owls also overcame mid-February injuries to two starters, closing the season with seven wins in their final 10 games. The only losses in that stretch came to NCAA Sweet 16 participants Duke, Richmond and San Diego State. In 2011-12, despite losing projected starter Scootie Randall for the season and center Micheal Eric for 13 games, Dunphy guided his charges to a 24-8 mark and the program's first outright A10 regular season title since 1989-90. The Owls finished 13-3 in league play and Dunphy earned his second A10 Coach of the Year honor for his efforts. Temple defeated #3/3 Duke to mark its fourth straight season with a win over a Top 10 opponent, and later cracked the national polls for the third straight year. Temple, which also shared the Big 5 title, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, and was the fifth-seed in the NCAA Midwest Region. In 2012-13, Dunphy again guided the Owls to another 20-plus win campaign with the Cherry and White becoming one of eight teams to compete in the last six straight NCAA Tournaments. Temple also knocked off a Top 10 team, this time #3/3 Syracuse, 83-79, at Madison Square Garden (12/22/12) to extend its current nation’s best record to five straight seasons of defeating a Top 10 foe while being unranked at the time. Temple would finish the campaign with a 24-10 record, advancing to the third round of the NCAA Tournament be-fore narrowly falling to top-ranked Indiana, 58-52. The Owls capped their final season in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a thrilling 84-76 win over #19/21 VCU on CBS to finish tied for third in the league with an 11-5 record. The program struggled in 2013-14, its first season in the American Athletic Conference. In a classic rebuilding year, the Owls posted a 9-22 record. The Cherry and White did con-tinue its streak of wins over a nationally-ranked program to seven with a 71-64 upset over #23 SMU. In 2014-15, Dunphy led his team to the best turnaround among all Division I teams, posting 17 more wins than the pre-vious season to finish at 26-11 overall and 13-5 in the confer-ence. A signature win over #10 Kansas was among the total as the Owls posted a 77-52 victory over the Jayhawks at the Wells Fargo Center (12/22). The Owls finished the regular season 23-10, but were surprisingly left out of the NCAA Tournament. As the #1 overall seed in the NIT, Dunphy, in his time coaching in the tourna-ment, guided Temple to wins over Bucknell, George Washing-ton and Louisiana Tech to reach the semifinals, before falling to Miami at Madison Square Garden. Dunphy was named American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, marking his third conference coach of the year honor (A-10: 2010, 2012). He also joined Chaney (516) as one of only two coaches to win 500 or more games at Big 5 schools. Defying expectations yet again in 2015-16, the Owls were picked to finish sixth in The American but instead Dun-phy led his team to a 14-4 record and an American Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship. Temple fell to conference tournament champion UConn in the semifinals, but was awarded a 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Owls took seventh-seeded Iowa to overtime before falling 72-70 in their NCAA First Round game. Dunphy was named the American's Coach of the Year for a second year in a row, as well as the NABC District Coach of the Year. The 2016-17 campaign saw the Owls defeat ranked op-
ponents on consecutive days for the first time in school histo-ry. Temple upset #25 Florida State and #19 West Virginia to win the 2016 NIT Season Tip-Off. With its projected starting backcourt sidelined for the season, the Cherry and White still finished 16-16 and fell short of another postseason bid. One of the most respected coaches in the nation, Dun-phy has coached eight Conference Players of the Year, three Conference Rookies of the Year, five perfect Conference sea-sons and 54 All-Conference honorees. Prior to joining Penn's coaching staff, Dunphy served as an assistant under Speedy Morris at his alma mater, La Salle University (1985-86 through 1987-88). The Philadelphia native's coaching career began at the United States Military Academy (1971-72), where he served as an assistant under head coach Dan Dougherty. In 1975, he became head coach of his high school alma mater, Malvern Prep. He remained there until becoming Lefty Ervin's assistant at La Salle University (1979-80). The following year, Dunphy joined current Maryland head coach Gary Williams' staff at American University. He served as an assistant two seasons under Williams, and the final three years under Ed Tapscott, the former head coach of the NBA’s Washington Wizards (2008-09). He returned to La Salle in 1985, serving one more season under Ervin and assisting Morris for two seasons. He left La Salle to become Tom Schneider's assistant at Penn in 1988. In 1989, Dunphy was named the 16th head coach at Penn. He would compile a 310-163 overall record in his 17-year career. His Quaker teams won an unprecedented 48 straight Ivy League games and four league titles from 1992 through 1996. His 1993-94 team posted a 25-3 record and earned a Number 25 ranking in the CNN/USA Today Coaches' Poll, the program's first such ranking since the 1978-79 campaign. That year also included a 90-80 first round upset of sixth-seed Ne-braska in the NCAA Tournament. In his last eight seasons at Penn, Dunphy, who was in-ducted into the school's Hall of Fame in May 2017, guided the Quakers to six Ivy League titles and a 93-19 league record. From 1999-2001, he led Penn to 25 straight league wins, in-cluding a perfect 14-0 mark in 1999-2000. In 2001-02, Dun-phy's Quakers posted a 25-7 record and won the school's first outright city-series title with a perfect 4-0 mark since 1973-74. A full-time educator on and off the court, Dunphy is in his 10th year teaching in Temple's prestigious Fox School of Business. He is team-teaching an honors course with Dr. Lynne Anderson, entitled, Management, Theory & Practice: From the Locker Room to the Board Room. He previously had served as a lecturer in the Wharton Executive Education program and in the management department of the Wharton School. Dunphy is one of the leaders in the local Coaches vs. Cancer campaign and was named to the National Council of Coaches vs. Cancer. Mr. Big FiveTemple head coach Fran Dunphy is synonymous with the Philadelphia Big 5. Dunphy, who lived his first 10 years in Southwest Philadelphia before moving to nearby Drexel Hill, Pa., starred at La Salle from 1967 through 1970. He would later serve as an assistant at his alma mater (1979-80; 1985-88) before taking the assistant coaching job at Penn for the 1988-89 season. After one season he would take over as the Quakers head coach, compiling a 310-163 record in 17 seasons. He is now in his 12th season at Temple. He received a master’s degree in counseling from Villanova, and currently resides in Villanova, Pa.
A Man For All CausesDunphy has been a major contributor of his time and energy to the American Cancer Society through Coaches vs. Cancer. He has spearheaded the local efforts of the six DI coaches that have led to raising over $1 million to benefit the American Cancer Society. Named the Coaches vs. Cancer National Coach of the Year for his efforts, Dunphy has helped to steer events in the area such as the Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Outing; the Coaches vs. Cancer BasketBall; coordinated open practices with the six area teams and holding a March Madness Breakfast to raise awareness for the cause. He was honored in 2008 as a local hero by Bank of America for his role with Coaches vs. Cancer, and was honored in 2017 with the Circle of Honor Award by the American Cancer Society.
Another cause that Dunphy champions is Big Brothers/Big Sisters. The Owl coach devotes his time to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Philadelphia by serving on the organziation’s Board of Trustees. His Penn teams participated in Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs each year during his tenure at the school. His Temple teams have been ac-tively participating in the program the past three seasons.
Dunphy is also a member of the Philadelphia CYO Hall of Fame.

Men's Basketball Earns Second Straight American Conference Team Academic Excellence Award in 2016-17Tempe earned its second straight American Athletic Conference Academic Excellence Award in 2016-17. The award is given to the team that compiles the highest collective grade point average for their sport in the American Athletic Conference. The selections are made by the conference's Academic Affairs Committee. The winners were chosen based on the 2016-17 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
Men's Basketball Among Record Seven Temple Teams to be Publicly Recognized for APRTemple men's basketball was one of a record seven Temple athletic teams to be publicly recognized for their multi-year academic performance rate (APR), the NCAA announced in May. Men's tennis was recognized for the fourth straight year while women's tennis and men's cross country garnered the honor for the second straight year. Men's and women's basketball, women's cross country and women's soccer were also honored by the NCAA.
The APR announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APR's within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multi-year APR's in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and pro-vides a measure of each team's academic performance. The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 980 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport.
