Pastor’s Pen: February 2017 Are you covered in dust?

Matthew 4:19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and fol-low me. Matthew 19:28 Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” Jesus frequently called people to “follow him”. A young Jewish boy or girl at about age 5 or 6 would begin school and memorize the Torah (means the teaching), also known as the Pentateuch. (The first five books of the Old Testament) This first round of instruction was called Bet Sefer (house of the Book) and lasted until the children were about 10 years old. Did you get that? At age 10 a Jewish stu-dent would have Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuter-onomy memorized. At about age 10 many of the children were sent home to learn the family trade and their formal education, academi-cally speaking, stopped. But the better students would continue. This step was known as Bet Talmud (house of learning). A child that finished Bet Talmud at age 14 or 15 had memorized the rest of the Old Testament… Genesis through Malachi… memorized. And again many were then sent home to learn the family trade… but the best of the best students were then expected to continue on in what was called Bet Midrash (house of study) where they would seek out a Rabbi and apply to the Rabbi to become one of the Rabbi’s disciples. The Rabbi would interview the prospective disciple by asking ques-tions to gauge their level of knowledge and their passion so they could decide whether they wanted to take on this student or disciple. If he accepted the student or disciple he was, in essence, saying you could do what I do. You could be like me.

We tend to think of students or disciples for learning what the teacher or the Rabbi, in this case, knows… but in the Jewish culture it was much deeper than that… (continued on page 5)

(Continued from Page 1)

The disciple wanted to be like the Rabbi, to act as the Rabbi would act, live like the Rabbi would live… Rabbis didn’t all interpret the scriptures the same way. They frequently differed in subtle ways and the Rabbis became known for the way they in-terpreted the Bible and how they lived it out. Taking on the “yoke” of your Rabbi meant knowing what he knew and doing what he did. The better you knew them the more you were making yourself identical to their teaching, their way of thinking and processing, their way of living. You wanted to be so close that you wouldn’t miss out on even the slightest of their nuances. A seat at their feet was literally the best spot and as they traveled from one place to another to follow next in line behind them was the best spot because there you could observe the most and learn the most.

There was an old Jewish saying, “May you be covered in the dust of your Rab-bi.” In other words, may you be so close to your Rabbi that the dust he kicks up falls on you… May you be just like your Rabbi. Our Mission as a church is to “Make disci-ples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world”. We should be so close to Jesus that his dust is the dust we are wearing. “But he isn’t here”, you say. The Bible will show you and tell you how you should act to follow in the footsteps of your Rabbi, Jesus Christ.

According to the Erdmann’s Bible Dictionary, DISCIPLE: ““one who learns”, a student or follower. It is apparent that becoming a disciple of Jesus in general meant a transformation of a person’s lifestyle. Many of these followers, presumably more than just the inner circle, accepted Jesus’ mobile life (cf. Luke 9:57–58). But beyond this, Jesus called all who believed in him to recast their inner lives (cf. 11:1), as well as to minister to others, at the expense of possessions, career, and family (Mark 10:28; Luke 14:26, 33), even to the extent of martyrdom (Mark 8:34–35; Luke 14:27).”

Are you covered in the dust of Jesus? (your Rabbi)

If you wish us to order the flowers for you, the cost is $50 payable to the church. If you prefer, you may pro-

DISCIPLESHIP PAGE .

This page is geared toward bringing more kids and families into our church. In order to make this happen and be suc-cessful, we ALL have to be willing to work together. WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO DO TO MAKE US A VITAL AND GROWING CHURCH??? See some opportunities listed below: KidZown News - We now have teachers in place for our KidZown at the 11:00 service. We will need helpers for both age groups to assist the teachers. If you are interested in helping out, let me know ASAP.

Bible Study Opportunities Interested in starting an in-home study group? I would love to help you get started! Please contact me for ideas, suggestions and any help you need to get started! MOPs group to begin United Methodist Temple will be starting a MOPs group in March. Hopefully, it will bring many of the preschool moms into the church in another avenue besides their kids in the preschool. This will need all of us helping to make it work! If you are interested in helping, either in leadership, helping with child care, or working with the MOPettes program, please let me know. I am in the process of getting this set up now. Please help to make it a viable opportunity to bring others to our church. Homework Helpers and Wednesday Night Live! Homework Helpers and Wednesday Night Live! are going strong, begin-ning

at 3:00 pm. on Wednesday afternoons. We do need more “helpers” to work with

the kids. If you are available to come and help on Wednesdays from 3:00-4:15 pm, please let me know. We NEED YOU! Just call Jill for more information. Kid’s Hope USA Anyone interested in becoming a mentor should contact Jill at the church. We have one of the largest groups of mentors in Vigo County, and we can always use more! Nursery workers Another area that will need more help is in our nursery. It is mandated by our Child Protection guidelines that there will be at least two adults (over 18) in the nursery at any given time. If you would be willing to help in the nursery on a rotating schedule, please contact Jill at the church. Jill Kuckewich 812-299-1898 or [email protected]

UMC Connections… In recent weeks, Pastor Kevin has talked about what it means to be a United Methodist and how our faith journey is aided by the United Methodist Church. Whether you have been a member for 4 years or 40 years, or are considering becoming a member, there may be questions you have about our denomination. Just what is a United Methodist? We have two great on-line resources to help answer that question. First, the denomination’s official website, UMC.org, has an excellent resource called “What We Believe” on the FAQ page. You will also find a brand new resource called “Ask the UMC” on the FAQ page as well. This is a great source of general information, as well as a diverse set of questions and an-swers about the United Methodist Church. Both resources can be accessed by going to UMC.org, then scrolling to the bottom of the homepage and clicking on Frequently Asked Questions. For easy access, just add this page to your favorites. Another great resource to learn about not only United Methodists, but the Church in general, is ChuckKnowsChurch.com. This is a fun and informative web series about objects, symbols, terms and names used in the church. You can learn about everything from Acolytes to Yah-weh in an often humorous and always respectful and informative way. You can view the origi-nal series, as well as a new series called “The Committee”, which examines the struggles many of today’s congregations face. Make this a favorite too! Phil Small, Lay Delegate

We have a growing group of veterans attending our Wednesday night peer group meetings at Outpost Lazarus. These are usually outside around the fire pit, weather dependent, with prayer in prayer room at the beginning. Spread the word to any veterans looking to connect that they are welcome to swing by at 8pm every Wednesday night. The winter hasn't relented yet, but we have gathered the materials to be ready for spring. The fire pit will have a stone encasement, the garden plot fence will be erected, and a "COP Lazarus- an out-reach ministry of United Methodist Temple" sign will be established

as soon as weather permits. Inside, we have an excellent stash of outdoor clothing and gear managed by John Viray to prepare us for our second- quarter efforts of homeless walkabout outreach this spring. John Groves brought our new Bishop, Julius Trimble, to tour the Outpost and receive a briefing on the Veteran's detachment. The man has a firm handshake and looks you square in the eye, and it was an honor to host him. He seemed pleased with the efforts and plans for the ministry because he wants us to be contacted by the Indiana Conference staff communications team to get our efforts developed in other appropriate areas. May we seek the work of our Creator in-tends for us, in the name and power of Jesus Christ to complete it. Please refer any veteran or veteran's family who may benefit from knowing our ministry group to our facebook page, Faithful Veteran Guide Detachment, or to the United Methodist Temple! Elias Donker

Temple Preschool News

The Worship team met for the first time this year and would like to report that Theresa Camp will be seeking liturgists for the 8:45 service, Phil Small and George Bakker are planning a brief update for ushers and are always looking for new volunteers in this area. Debbie Morgan will be scheduling acolytes for the 8:45 service.....let it be known there is NOT an age limit for this position (isn't that right, Hazel?!). We have decided to form an Altar Guild....this would be a group of women (and men) to take control of all altar needs includ-ing the placement of paraments, floral arrangements, communion supplies and set-up, special services. If you have any interest in any of these are-as, PLEASE let us know!!

Extra! Extra! Read all about us here at Temple. It’s hard to believe February is here already! Each month the Temple teachers follow a curriculum that is appropriate for the age group of their students. We also make sure fun is a part of each and every day. The girls and boys experience, Bible stories, Time with Pastor, art, music, games, and of course, lots of fun with friends. Our older classes get to enjoy field trips throughout the school year. Our 2 and 3 year olds are just a little young for this so they’ll be staying behind until next year. The 4 year old and Pre-k classes will be visiting the Allen Memorial Planetarium at South High School this month. Love is in the air with Valentine parties for all our classes this month. Lots more fun with games, goodies, art and songs! Be sure to tell someone you love them this month and stop in to say Hi! Mrs. Beth Creasey/Pre-K Teacher

KUDOS AND NOTES

During the recent renovation of the Sanctuary, it was necessary to

remove five pews. The pews range between 11 and 13 feet long.

The Trustees would like to sell them, but they want to give our

church members first chance

to purchase the pews if

anyone is interested. They

are asking $150 each.

If you are interested, please

call the office at

United Methodist Temple, Thank you for your generosity and kindness with

the Angel tree this year. We provided gifts to the families of 129 students at Farrington Grove. I know you made Christmas more enjoyable for these families by providing socks and underwear for these students. Only through the support and generosity of you and numerous other people, the community is able to provide a better Christmas for these students. Your donation does make a difference to the lives of our children living in pov-erty. Thanks for being part of our school commu-nity in trying to make the world a better place for many of our students and families. Thanks, Bill William V. Smith Principal

Preschool Graduation took place on May 22, 2014. The sanctuary was filled with proud parents and grandparents celebrating a terrific year. The children sang songs and we watched a slide show. Soon the graduates were announced and I read off their names and what each one planned to be as an adult. We had many ideas, everything from Sam wanting to be a paleontologist (dinosaur expert) to Maggie wanted to be a princess fairy. Thank you to Jill, who accompanied us on the piano and led us in prayer. The happy, but somewhat teary, crowd enjoyed refresh-ments in fellowship hall afterwards. It is amazing to think how quickly our school year passed. Each year I am sad to see some of stu-dents heading off to Kindergarten, but I know they are ready to go and they will do well. It seems just yesterday these four and five year olds were just little two year olds arriving for the first time. How quickly they change and become so grown up! This summer we have a large group of kids enjoying Summer Mom's Day Out on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Several of our teachers are leading the kids through fun activities and enjoying the playground.

Find the Class That is Right for You - Class Descriptions:

Gentle Yoga (Wednesday at 1pm)

Not as much “up and down” as an all-levels class! We will start seated or lying on our mat, transition to

our feet to do some standing poses and then back down to our mat only one time during the class.

This class introduces and fine-tunes basic poses and technique while giving the opportunity to relax

and connect with God.

Chair Yoga (Monday at 9:30 am)

Do yoga in a chair? It’s possible! If you have trouble standing, then find God’s grace and a great stretch

in Chair Yoga! We will do our poses seated in a chair!

All– Levels Yoga (Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11:15 am)

In this class we are up and down several times. There are options of staying in your comfort zone or of

trusting God and “going for it” in some more challenging poses!
