Did you know...? You can help Jeremiah go green and save trees by opting to receive the Covenant
paperlessly, and not through the mail in print. Want to go paperless? E-mail
[email protected]. If every Jeremiah member family chose to go paperless, we
could save the equivalent of 10,920 pieces of paper per month!

Tchaikovsky Spectacular, featuring the “1812 Overture” with live cannons
Spend some time at Ravinia this summer with your Temple Jeremiah family! We will be attending the Tchaikovsky
Spectacular presented by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, August 4. We will have a space reserved on the
lawn for all temple members to sit and enjoy the concert together.
Cost is $10 per person. Please bring your own food and drinks and be sure to get there early so that we can schmooze
and enjoy the beautiful summer night before the concert begins. Send your RSVP and payment to Kathy in the temple office
Tell and Kvell: See what our congregants are up to!
Leadership Mission to Israel
Steve and Stephanie Victor (pictured at left) had the unique opportunity to travel to Israel
with their Congressman Brad Schneider (D-10). The Chicago Jewish United Fund sponsored the
Leadership Mission with its office in Israel. A meeting was held with the Mayor of Sderot, David
Bouskila, at the Jewish National Fund-sponsored indoor children’s playground. The mayor gave
an insight into the security complexities of Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza while trying to create a
thriving home for its citizens. One-third of its 650 children have post traumatic distress disorder
due to Hamas bombings performed during the morning hours when the children are getting
ready to go to school. Sderot is located on Israel’s border with the Gaza Strip and is the city
which Temple Jeremiah’s fundraising efforts helped supply with a fire pump truck. This was Steve
and Stephanie’s first trip to Israel and coincidentally they celebrated their 18th wedding
anniversary while there.
Mah Jongg Madness One table, 152 tiles, four players, plenty of snacks, and all the neighborhood gossip you can handle! Stephanie Victor (pictured at right) spoke about the Jewish Roots of Mah Jongg during the Chicago History
Museum’s May Mah Jongg Madness. In this discussion of the cross-cultural love of Mah Jongg, the Chicago
Chinese History Museum and her shared their history and connection with mahj over kosher tea. From her
experiences in teaching to tournaments, Stephanie described the basics and various rules of play and why this
game of strategy and luck was popularized by Jewish-American women in the early 20th century and remains
popular today. Stephanie and her Chinese counterpart, who provided the engaging beginnings of Chinese Mah
Jongg and the variety of ways it is played in the Orient, were also a feature during the Afternoon Shift on
WBEZ radio 91.5.
Maccabiah Games “We take athletes that happen to be Jewish to compete in the Maccabiah Games,” said Jeff Bukantz, general chairman of the USA Maccabiah
Organizing Committee. “But we return home with Jewish athletes who have a renewed sense of pride in their Judaism and increased support for the
State of Israel.” You just never know who is part of our wonderful Jeremiah community! As many of you may be aware, the 19th Maccabiah Games
are going to take place in Israel this summer. Sometimes referred to as the “Jewish Olympics,” these Games are held every four years, attracting the
most outstanding Jewish athletes from around the world. As one of the largest elite competitions, the Maccabiah grew to more than 8,500 athletes
from 70 countries, making it the third largest sports event in the world, just after the Summer Olympics and the Pan Am Games! This year, the USA
Team is over 1,130 strong, making it the largest traveling delegation EVER to travel from the USA to compete in an International Olympic Committee-
sanctioned event. A substantial number of athletes come from California and New York, but ... one of our own Jeremiah men, Adam Carl, has made
the Masters Men's 35+ Basketball team!!! This is a very big deal! We are so excited for Adam, and we look forward to hearing about his experience
upon returning to Northbrook. Please, if one of your children or someone else you know will be competing in a Junior division team, contact us right
away. We want to applaud them for their spirit and expertise, and also want to hear “all about the experience” in Israel!! Go USA Team! Adam, the
USA Team is lucky to have you — ENJOY!!! –ANNE LIDSKY
Graduation Mazel tov to Stephen Lincoln, son of Sharon Mitchell, who graduated this spring from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Stephen majored in

Jeremiah Jukebox We had a great time dancing, dining, schmoozing, bidding on auction items, and supporting Temple Jeremiah. We are
thrilled that we raised more than $45,000 that will go directly to supporting our programs and our members at the
temple. Thank you to Abby Lasky, chair of the benefit, and the entire committee (pictured below) for this fantastic event.

Temple Jeremiah Caring Community:
We love to spread the love. Did you know that Temple Jeremiah has a Caring Community of volunteers
available to reach out to fellow congregants in times of sadness and
celebration? We love to spread the love.
Here are the services we would be glad to provide for you:
Caring Meals. We would be very happy to bring a meal for you and your family during
times of stress or need, such as illness, death, hospitalization, or birth. Let
the clergy know or contact Barb Kite or Patty Turim directly. We can’t help if we don’t know! Contact Barb at
Resources. We have resource lists with links and referrals on our website. These include providers for individual, marriage, family counseling, family life education, child development, LGBTQ community services, addiction, vocational
services, sacred aging and other topics. Visit the Caring Community page on our website at templejeremiah.org.
How you can help: Provide a meal for a family. Don’t cook? That’s okay! Take-out is just fine.
Provide a ride for a congregant regularly or just once or twice!
Attend a shiva service or help with shiva by receiving trays, making kugels, or serving during shiva.
Visit a congregant dealing with illness and bring them chicken soup.
Be a mentor and friend to a congregant confronting an illness or situation you have faced.
