    RABBI’S REFLECTIONS:

    Go Vote

Every five years, those of us who don’t live or vote in Israel still have a chance to determine who receives money there. The World Zionist Organi-zation (WZO) distributes some $300 million to sup-port a variety of issues and causes in Israel and

abroad, including education and aliyah (immigration to Israel;) peace and security; anti-Semitism; and Jewish identity. The WZO has been meeting as the World Zionist Congress ev-er since Theodor Herzl founded it in 1897. It is still alive, and with this kind of money still a for-midable organization. organization receives, the more it can influence how to spend the money, es-pecially when it combines with other groups to create a large bloc. If we want to see this money go to causes about which we care, every one of us should vote in the World Zionist Congress election. The registration cost for those over 30 is $10, and for those under 30 it is $5. Voting for the con-servative movement will assist Israel to benefit from our values, as well as fos-ter the conservative movement in Isra-el. The conservative movement’s Zionist organization is Mercaz (slate #2.) The platform is to encourage: Pluralism—Mercaz espouses Jewish values without limiting itself to one particular stream of Judaism. Aliyah, Hebrew and Zionist Edu-cation—Mercaz joins in the effort to combat anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism, and encourages aliyah from all coun-tries. It also calls for the strengthening of Jewish/Zionist education in the Unit-ed States and throughout the world. It opposes all attempts to restrict the Law

of Return. A negotiated two-state settlement between Israel and Palestine—Mercaz supports a two-state solution – one Jewish and one Palestinian – that is the declared policy of the current Israeli prime minister and of every other Israeli administration for the past ten years. A pro-active concern for Israel’s environment—as caretakers of the land of Israel we are responsible for protect-ing Israel’s environment for future gen-erations. Support for the conservative/Masorti movement—the number of Mercaz-affiliated members determines how much money and recognition Masorti congregations in Israel receive. Your vote then is a vote of support for our brothers and sisters in Israel, and it has economic implications. The registration form can be found at https://www.myvoteourisrael.com. More information about Mercaz can be found at http://votemercaz.org. Voting ends on April 30, 2015. The 37th World Zion-ist Congress will take place in Jerusa-lem in October, 2015.

    Friday Night Services

Friday night Shabbat Dinner on March 6 will be sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Howard Gordon. On Friday, March 13 we will return to our 7 PM starting time for services.

January 30th Dual Gathering at TI

A gathering of Temple Israel members attended on the evening of January 30 for a dual cele-

bration. At a special Seder and dinner following services, we celebrated Tu B'Shevat, the new

year for trees. We ate the special foods and learned about the significance of this often-

    overlooked holiday.

We enjoyed a celebratory dinner and bid a fond farewell to Cynthia and Jeff Schulman, long-

time members who have now left the Riverhead area to move closer to their 2 married daugh-

ters and their families. Cynthia and Jeff will be missed by all, and we hope they keep in

touch. We wish them the best of luck in their new surroundings, and much joy from their fam-

    ilies.
