Special Shabbatot are Jewish Shabbat days, on which special events are

commemorated. Variations in the liturgy and special customs differentiate them from

the regular Sabbaths and each one is referred to by a special name.

During the month of August, there are a few special Shabbatot that are connected to

Jewish history and which lead us up to Yamim Noraim – our High Holy Days. There

are three Shabbatot which precede the holiday of Tisha B’Av.

Tisha B'Av is an annual fast day in Judaism, named for the ninth day (Tisha) of the

month of Av in the Hebrew calendar. The fast commemorates the destruction of both

the First Temple and Second Temple in Jerusalem, which occurred about 655 years

apart, but on the same Hebrew calendar date. Tisha B'Av is never observed on

Shabbat. Tish'a B'Av begins at sundown on Saturday, August 13th.

The third Shabbat, right before Tisha B’Av, is called Shabbat Chazon after the

haftarah written by Isaiah. It warns the “sinful nation” that has “forsaken the Lord”

about the potentially disastrous consequences of its actions; yet it also reminds the

people: “be your sins like crimson, they can turn snow white, but if you refuse and

disobey, you will be devoured by the sword.” This haftarah prefigures the mood of the

subsequent Hebrew month of Elul, with its focus of repentance. Isaiah says, “Cease

to do evil; learn to do good. Devote yourselves to justice; aid the wronged,” implying

that mourning the loss of the Temple and Jerusalem is not sufficient without a

commitment to ethical action.

Not only is Tisha B’Av preceded by a Shabbat that sets its mood, but it is also

followed by a Shabbat of Comfort, Shabbat Nachamu. This haftarah by Isaiah 40:1-

26, begins: “Comfort, oh comfort My people, says your God.” The haftarah suggests

that Israel’s “term of service is over, that her iniquity is expiated, for she has received

at the hand of the Lord double for all her sins.” This is the first of seven haftarot from

Isaiah, called “the seven consolations,” which are read on the Shabbatot after Tisha

B’Av. Offering hope of ultimate redemption, these consolatory readings bridge the

period from Tisha B’Av to Rosh Hashanah, as Jews are beginning their own move

towards self-judgment, self-renewal, and personal redemption. Shabbat Nachamu

begins at sundown Saturday, August 20th.

Services!

Cantor Riselle Bain

Since the schedule of our services at Temple Israel is limited to once

or twice a month, we sometimes stretch a special Shabbat to a date

when we have a service or sometimes commemorate it a little early to

fit our temple calendar!

Our next Shabbat is on August 26th. We will celebrate Shabbat

Nachamu together. An extra special Shabbat treat will be our gathering

on Saturday, August 27th at noon for pizza, salad, popcorn, drinks, and

a special movie about Jewish history in America – “They Came For

Good” “Taking Root” and “Present at the Creation.” Thanks to Bernice

Snoll for sharing this special movie with our congregation. I hope to

see ALL of you to hear the chant of Shabbat Nachamu on Friday and

to enjoy Pizza and a Movie together on Saturday!
