Rabbi’s Message:

A message for summer... As we view television, social media posts, and read the newspapers, it is difficult to remain on an even keel. There is a 24/7 news cycle and every topic is “breaking news.” Too often the reportage is incomplete or filled with editorial commentary. We are left to research significant

factual details. We try to digest the images and make sense of the issues.

This is a very incomplete list: Children with their families at our southern bor-der — some children separated from their parents at the border — violence in our metropolitan area and other cities — human trafficking — opioid epidemic in Ohio and elsewhere — every election is “the most important election” ever — every election is a referendum on those in power — epidemic amount of shootings in Chicago — shootings at restaurants, schools, and anywhere — Is-rael under attack from Hamas protestors and rockets — Hamas continues to build terror tunnels in attempts to infiltrate Israel and kill her citizens — the United States Embassy moves from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem — President Trump meets with Kim Jong-un of North Korea to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula — the Cleveland Cavaliers lose to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals — Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy retires —etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. It is enervating just reading the “incomplete” list. There is little civility as people discuss, more likely raise their voices, in discussion.

A profound question — is it fair to enjoy the pleasures of this world while oth-ers suffer? Give this some thought. If you believe it isn’t, then you will never know enjoyment, for the world is always filled with suffering — at the hands of others, through the vagaries of volcanic vents in Hawaii, by being at the wrong place at the wrong time, so on and so on. Also, the world is filled with great happiness. Some of you are recovering from a medical diagnosis, which you were told was very unlikely. Yet, here you are, alive and still standing. Cou-ples marry, healthy children are born, you awake each morning to the routine functioning of a healthy body — thank God.

However, the world is filled with suffering. The Torah reminds us in Deuteron-omy 15:11, “for there will never cease to be needy people in your land, which is why I command you: open your hand to poor and needy.”

So, in light of the above, what does God want me to do? Our Rabbis note the Torah begins and ends with divine acts of loving kindness (gemilut chas-sadim). In the beginning, God provided clothes for Adam and Eve (Gen. 3:21) and at the end, provided for Moses’ final resting place (Deut. 34:6). In Genesis 18:1, God made a “hospital visit” to Abraham shortly after his circumcision at the age of 99.

What shall we do? Our tradition esteems the giving of tzedakah (charity), how-ever it ranks performing acts of kindness even a little higher. Our Rabbis teach in the Talmud: Acts of kindness are greater than charity in three ways. (1) Charity is done with one’s money, while kindness may be done with one’s money or with one’s person. For example, visiting a sick person. (2) Charity is given only to the poor, while kindness may be done for both the poor and the rich. For example, consoling mourners or those who are depressed. (3) Charity is given only to the living, while kindness may be shown to both the living and the dead. For example, arranging for the burial of an indigent person or helping to maintain a cemetery. (Sukkah 49b)

MITZVAH OF THE SEASON

Don’t forget one of TINT’s most important projects! We are collecting:

School supplies: notebooks, paper, crayons, pencils, calculators, scissors, markers, mini-tissue boxes, glue, etc.

Goods for “Blessing Bags” Travel-sized toiletries: toothpaste, soap, deodorant, shave cream & razors, baby wipes, shampoo, soap, etc. Supplies for PB&J: Smooth peanut butter (not “natural) & jam (not “jelly”); quart-sized zip-lock bags

A recent study has found that women who carry a little extra weight, live longer than the men who mention it.

From the President’s Desk

By Richard Freedman

I am writing this as the summer solstice is about to begin. Summertime at Temple Israel Ner Tamid means that our esteemed Rabbi will be heading north to Alaska. He will spend the month of July resting, communing with nature and his family, and recharging his batteries. During his absence, Bill Droe, Joy Gray, Alan Miner, and Mark Siegel will each help Rachel lead a service. I thank these brave volunteers for going above and beyond in taking their turn on the bima. Remember, each of them needs some help. Your presence and voices will ease their burden. Please attend as many of these Shabbat services and you can. They will be fulfilling spiritually and you will have performed an act of gemilut chassidim. This act of kindness toward our volunteers will be rewarded. Save the date of August 10, 2018. We will combine our “Shabbat at Lakeside Yacht Club” service/boat ride event with an Open House designed to introduce our congregation to potential new members. Please see page 8 for details, and bring friends you think might be interested in joining TINT. Be proactive in telling those with school-aged children about our congregational commitment to provide learning opportunities as part of their membership. While almost every other congregation charges for religious school, Temple Israel Ner Tamid continues to provide tuition as a value added benefit to membership. Please patronize the businesses that donate food and products that allow our synagogue to engage in our mission of Tikun Olam. Let them know you’re a member and appreciate their generosity. There will be a nice feature about our PB&J efforts at the Panera website. Mitchell’s Ice Cream has provided treats for many events including teacher appreciation. Bialy’s Bagels, Costco, Chick-Fil-A and Jack’s Deli...all have provided goods or services to our congregation this year. A new bakery called Goldie’s—owned by a member of our congregation—has opened on Mayfield Road. I’ve sampled their coconut bars and Russian tea biscuits. You should, too, trust me. Goldie’s has agreed to become the official donut shop and bakery of Temple Israel Ner Tamid. Jack’s Deli has agreed to become the official delicatessen of Temple Israel Ner Tamid. Please see their ads elsewhere in this bulletin. The High Holidays are just around the corner. The choir begins practicing soon. For the members of our shofar choir, you too should begin to warm up. But most importantly, use this summer to recharge your batteries. Take a page from Rabbi Matt and spend time with your family and friends, enjoying the wonderful Cleveland weather. I hope to see you somewhere soon.

Do you write checks to pay your dues or make a donation? Be sure to fill in the “Memo” line to tell the Office what your check is for.

If it is a donation, let us know to which fund you want it applied, i.e. General Operating, Religious School, Tzedakah, etc. If you send money electronically through your bank, again, please be sure to indicate what it is for.

Remember to feed THE PAPER RETRIEVER in TINT’s parking lot! TINT gets a rebate for the recyclable paper we collect!

Celebrate with a Leaf for our Simcha Tree.

An engraved leaf is a lasting expression of

celebration or appreciation.

Temple Israel Ner Tamid Capital Campaign “Vision 2020”

Last month the city of Mayfield Heights gave preliminary approval to our plans for the addition to our building. The architect’s rendering is pictured below. As you can see, this is a beautiful addition, designed to fit in with our existing structure.

The addition will include two classrooms, restrooms, office space for our teachers, a courtyard/gathering area for outside events, a river (for Taschlich) and other features that will modernize the learning experience for our religious school students of all ages..

At the same time, we expect to modernize the Sanctuary with an updated sound system, an improved heating and cooling system, new lighting and more. Each of these improvements will help lower our overall operating costs while providing a better atmosphere for our congregants.

You will also begin to see new lighting and safety features around the synagogue. A member of the community, Jim Wallack has conducted a security review for us and will be presenting the results shortly to the Board of Trustees. Our facility must remain a place where we can study, pray, and gather with complete confidence that all will be well. These security features will be incorporated into the design of the building and we expect them to be aesthetically pleasing.

Further, we will seek bids for repaying our driveway and parking lot. We will also incorporate new signage, and repair minor cracks in our existing structure. Temple Israel will be a more modern facility designed to last for many years.

Obviously, none of this work is free. Already, more than 40 congregants have donated, or pledged to donate, over $600,000 to kickstart our efforts (see list on page 15). Thanks to the efforts of Rick Brown and Craig Appel, a grant was received as well. Less obvious improvements have been made. These include the new chairs in the Sanctuary, a new roof, a new phone system and other improvements.

We still need to raise more money. The Board believes that an additional $400,000-$600,000 will be needed. I ask each congregant to make a donation to help meet these costs. Pledges can be fulfilled over a five-year period. A pledge of just $18 per month results in $1080 towards our capital campaign. Many congregants have pledged $12,500 over the five-year period. Some have been even more generous. Please join those of us who have provided the seed capital and we will realize our goal of a modern facility with no debt.

TINT Responds to Immigrant Children Separation Crisis In keeping with Temple Israel Ner Tamid’s commitment to Tikum Olam, Peter Freimark, chairman of our Tzedakah/Social Action committee, along with past president Joy Gray and Larry Heller, packed and shipped several boxes of soft, cuddly teddy bears to ease the stress of children kept from their parents in Texas. The bears headed off to McAllen, Texas on the first day of summer. They would be handed out by Catholic Charities and other relief organizations.

It’s Not Too Early to Make Your New Year’s Resolution: Get More Involved in 5779.

There’s an amazing magic trick that always happens around the 1st of Tishri. Every year, over 400 people come to High Holy Day services...and then—POOF!—most vanish from our halls until the following year. Why? The usual excuse is “I’m too busy.” Followed by: the kids have soccer, I have book club, I like to sleep in on Sundays, I don’t know anyone on the committees, I’m tired, etc. A congregation is only as strong as your commitment to its success. We need your input, as well as your dues, to thrive. On the Board of Trustees. On event committees. Attending adult education classes. In discussions about Religious School and Budget issues. We need to see you at Friday night services (there are 168 hours in a week; you can’t spare 2 for shul and nosh)?

Resolve NOW to become more involved in Temple Israel Ner Tamid. Your voice is important. Share it.

On May 20th, TINT religious school students presented Joe Hendlin from the Friends of the IDF (FIDF) with a check for $1,070 in honor of the 70th anniversary of Israel. The amount, to be used by The Impact Fund to provide college scholarships for Israeli veterans, reflected tzedakah money the youngsters donated throughout the 2017-2018 school year.

Here’s a High Holy Days Heads-Up! The new year — 5779 — begins a week earlier than last year (Erev Rosh Hashanah is Sunday, September 9th).

Soon you will be receiving information about tickets for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. Remember, High Holy Day tickets are required for services, and will be sent only to those members who have paid their 2017-2018 in full AND have either 1) made July and August payments, or 2) have sent in written arrangements for paying your dues by credit card for 2018-2019. High Holy Day tickets are a benefit of membership. We encourage you to show your support for your synagogue and fellow congregants by fulfilling your financial obligation at this special time of the year. More High Holy Day information will be available in the September/October issue of The IsraeLight.

Rabbi’s Message, continued from page 2 This summer, if the spirit moves you — get involved. If the spirit doesn’t move you — get involved anyway. You are needed. As you look through this IsraeLight, you will see and read about the acts of loving kind-ness (gemilut chassadim) we perform at Temple Israel Ner Tamid. Very recently, we sent more than 100 Teddy Bears, from our Teddy Bear Bank, to McAllen, Texas to help comfort the children in detention centers at the southern border (page 7). We have done this before and, if need be, we will send more. After every Shabbat Ser-vice, we make peanut butter and jelly sand-wiches and deliver them to Cleveland’s homeless. We need help with those deliv-eries. We have done this for more than 10 years, on a weekly basis. This summer be on the alert for opportuni-ties to perform acts of kindness. Do you see a frail person schlepping a package which seems too heavy for him? Have you come across an acquaintance who seems upset and distracted, and in need of some-one to talk with her? Do you spot a neigh-bor who is recuperating from an operation and needs a companion with whom to take a walk to build up his strength? Are you really so harried that you cannot let the driver pull into the traffic on the road? Your instinct might be to continue doing whatever you are doing — often I feel that way — but, as you rush from place to place, ask yourself the question, “What would God want me to do?” How about doing an act of gemilut chassadim? It will make your day better, your summer better, and improve the lives of those you touch. And, it is the right thing to do. Kol tuv (all the best) and shalom, Parents, Register NOW for

the 2018-2019 school year!

What Do You See...and Feel?

During the TINT trip to Israel last December, this picture was purchased by Frank & Phyllis Weiss at Yad Vashem, the holocaust museum. It now hangs in our temple’s library. Rabbi Matt asks that you study the image. How do you interpret it? What do you see? How does it make you feel? Is it just a piece of cloth on barbed wire? Or is there something more? Come, take a closer look at the original in the library. Write some of your thoughts and share them with Rabbi Matt at [email protected].

Students from St. Edward High School Make Donation, Share Lunch with Rabbi.

In April, 25 young men and their teacher from St. Edward High School in Lakewood visited Temple Israel Ner Tamid for a morning of learning and discussion with Rabbi Matt. During the meeting, they presented TINT with a $100 check for our Tzedakah Fund. After the session, everyone reconvened at Jack’s Deli for a real taste of Judaism...lunch!
