BOARD OF
Dr. Chikara Higashi
Dear Graduates: TUJ is a remarkably successful American university
operating in Japan, the largest in size, and highest in quality. Graduates can find jobs in major corporations in Japan as well as in foreign countries. Applicants have improved remarkably in quality and quantity. Social recognition of TUJ is high and favorable. TUJ is, indeed, a great success. This is a wonderful and commendable joint operation between Japan and the United States.
We have plans for expansion near Tokyo and in Wakayama. The new campus near Tokyo will be equipped with far better facilities and equipment. Seminar houses in Wakayama, one of the most beautiful national parks in Japan, will have sports grounds, a gymnasium, seminar rooms and overnight facilities.
TUJ is firmly committed to the goals of serving our students and promoting good relations between Japan and the United States. To continue to be successful, we vitally need TUJ students' great, continuous contribution. Please study hard, and be ready to contribute to the world's peace and economic prosperity.
Yours sincerely, Chikara Higashi

Fukuzawa Yukichi, the foremost advocate of modernization of Japan at the time Japan opened her gates to the world in the mid-19th century, began his celebrated book, "Gakumon no Su-sume" (Encouragement for Learning), with the famous words, "Heaven creates no man above man and no man below man." As a social thinker, Fukuzawa sought to enlighten the Japanese people to the new notion that men were equal before the law in a modern society.
Japan is now experiencing a second opening of the country to the world, As much as people were bound to Tokugawa's rigid feudal society, contemporary Japanese are bound to a regimented and insular society.
The internationalization of Japan will free young men and women from the bind which leads to a new aphorism that all men are equal in an international society.
You have become a world citizen by graduating from the Temple University.

ARTS AND SCIENCES ADMINISTRATION
I offer my warm congratulations to the 1989 graduates. You have accomplished a major task and you are well prepared to seek new challenges. I hope, as you review your years at TUJ, that you can say you have experienced the pleasure of learning. Your education here at TUJ has been in the tradition that liberal arts learning preserves, encourages and enriches values and knowledge. Use this knowledge wisely. Remember and practice the process you utilized to acquire information. Specific information will fade in time but the process will permit you to continue to grow. You have the tools to think creatively, communicate effectively and to make and to understand decisions on all levels. You are not only prepared for a meaningful career but also for a full and rewarding life. We take pride in your present achievements. We will rejoice in your future success. Represent us well and return often.
TUJ DEAN, DR. WILLIAM SHARP
I wish to congratulate all of the students at TUJ for their accomplishments during the 1988-89 academic year. To the Seniors, a special congratulation is in order and a sincere wish for a future filled with success and happiness. It has been an honor to have been associated with all of you during the past year and I am looking forward to next year with great enthusiasm.
As I stated when I began my new job as Associate Dean last summer, my principal task is to do everything within my power to make your years at TUJ the most rewarding possible. I sincerely hope that we can work together to make your TUJ experience one of the best times of your lives.
TUJ ASSOCIATE DEAN, DR. WILLIAM YOUNG
Temple University Japan is impressive in its friendless and warmth, in its student spirit and cooperation, and in its great potential for growth and increased curricular offerings. Many constructive ideas and new programs have already been instituted. Many more are in the planning stage. It is very stimulating to be part of such a positive and growing community. As you graduates go forth into your professions, I am sure you will look back on these years of academic promise and accomplishment as wonderful opportunities for intellectual growth. Our best wishes for a bright future go with you.
DIRECTOR OF ARTS AND SCIENCES, DR. BETTY RICHARDS
DIRECTOR, ACADEMIC ADVISING AND COUNSELING CENTER
As a new member of the Temple University Japan campus, I look forward to meeting you and working with you. I hope to help you meet your goals and to have a rewarding academic experience. For the Seniors, congratulations on a job well done. Your graduation from this fine university should be a source of pride for you and your family. I hope that this will be one of a series of rewarding and satisfying accomplishments.
ROSE K. KATZ
DIRECTOR, INTENSIVE ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAM
By deciding to attend Temple University Japan, students are demanding a great deal of themselves — much more than in a typical Japanese university. Mastering English to the necessary proficiency level is not an easy task as the students know well. Students in the IELP put in long hours of study before they are recommended for the undergraduate program. Once into the College of Arts and Sciences, students face an even greater challenge: successful completion of their academic work in English. I admire the spirit and effort of each student taking on this challenge.
On behalf of the faculty in the Intensive English Language Program, I would like to congratulate all students who have been successful this year, from both the IELP and CAS. To those students still working hard in either program: "Good luck and keep on working."

David Green
Another year has passed by so quickly at TUJ. We would like to congratulate all the students who will be graduating soon. We are very proud of your achievements and wish you well.
It's been a very enjoyable year in the library. We've worked together with so many student monitors to improve what the library has to offer the students and faculty body. We've bought more books, magazines, and microfiche. We've added features, such as the handy new computer students use to find magazine articles.
A special thanks to all those monitors that have helped make -these improvements possible.

OSAKA FACULTY AND STAFF
Given the increasing interest shown by Kansai residents for unique and high quality education, it is not surprising to see TUJO's student enrollment shot up from a mere handful a year and a half ago to the present ninety plus students. With a committed staff of administrators and teachers, TUJO has been able to tailor a dynamic IELP curriculum to meet the needs and expectations of the learners. It is certainly stimulating to be involved in such a vigorous program.

MISUMI
Each company member has the opportunity to be creative just like an artist who paints freely on a white canvas.
Market Development Division Manager: Kazuyuki Komura
Individuals set their own goals for each job at Misumi. Everyone is a manager. Q: This company is identified as a
trading company, as a supplier for manufacturers. What exactly does your company do?
A: Our company sells parts made from metals and plastics which are used in the manufacturing of retail goods. These products are sold to large corporations
Q:
such as automobile and other electric companies. However, our main job is not that of trading spcifically but that of research and project design. Most of Misumi's trading and sales is done through catalog distribution and sales. The main thrust at Misumi is in the area of consumer survey and research design. Does this mean then that company members work as a team
on each new project? A: Well, it depends on the scale of
project. If it's a large job there will be a team of people working together, but, in many cases people often work individually. Initially, there is much research involved in actually finding out exactly what the corporation or manufacturer's needs are. Then, time is spent in development technology to design

parts for the needs at hand. This is followed by financial planning and further research development to assure the product meets the standard of Misumi and it's consumer. The ultimate goal is not only to sell but to develop and design high quality products. Misumi is unique because of it's philosophy and individuality in product development.
Company members are often involved in the project from research through to the final product. Recently, Misumi has begun to only sell parts to companies but design and
manufactured goods such as mechanical mechanies. This has produced a new area in market development for Misumi. Q: What is this market develop
ment division responsible for? A: Unlike sales which develops new
parts, this section develops systems such as computer systems, CAD/CAM and others. This division is also responsible for technical support to companies which it serves. Due to the favorable response it has received from it's customers, Misumi has entered the market of machine production and planning to expand into other markets as well. And in most cases research, through to the production is done by individuals within the company. It becomes a creative process. Each company member has the opportunity to be creative just like an artist who paints freely on a white canvas. Misumi's philosophy is praised by its company members.
Misumi is the pioneer in the revolution of the distribution system of trading. When Misumi began in the trading business they standardized parts and spent over 10 years in achieving this new system. In 1977, Misumi started publishing a catalogue of parts which was called "Face." In 1980, they developed an in format ion magazine ca l led "Voice." In this way, Misumi has revolutionized the distribution of goods
for manufacture. This unique way of business has made it easier for companies and has improved productivity for Misumi customers. It has also allowed Misumi to expand and has provided capital for future development.
In June of 1989, Misumi will have their own building which will provide research as well as recreational facilities. Because of its good financial standing, high credibility and good social standing, Misumi will move into the stock market within 5 years. In order to do this they must maintain their development by revolutionizing Japan's market. They are doing this through the system of C3 computers. This not only has improved the market system in Japan but has resulted in Misumi's internationalization. They now have subsi-daries and branches in the USA and Taiwan. This year they plan to open branch offices in Europe.
If you are interested in Misumi and would like to learn more about this unique company, please contact Mr. Kato, division and development manager at (03) 647-7111.

CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES!
Dear Friends: We have really enjoyed being your
teachers, and are very happy for you that you have successfully finished school. You are right to be proud for having graduated. TUJ is a very fine school, and you have worked hard to earn your degree.

We will never forget you. Our time at TUJ has been wonderful mostly because the students are so nice. Please stay in touch with us. After we leave Tokyo, our address in America is: 1043 69th Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19126
Best wishes for the future. Congratulations! ROMAN and OLGA CYBRIWSKY
