"Hillel says: Do not separate yourself from the communi-

ty." Avot 2:4

It doesn't take much to be reminded how amazing our commu-

nity is.

If people can't come to Temple, Mindy and I set out to bring

Temple to them.

We set out to visit every home, and actually visited 150 families

and homes!

The goal was to knock on every door, and then, with a mask on,

have an outdoor conversation.

Needless to say, most people were home.

Even though we sent emails in advance, there are many in our congregation who have

no internet access. They were so surprised (we think, pleasantly surprised) to see us.

Some people forgot how nice it was to have a visitor (other than the postal carrier). On-

ly a very few were in and out -- polite but brief.

Many, many people were so warm. You can see photos on the Temple Beth Hillel,

South Windsor CT Facebook page and on page 9.

We want to let you know how much you are missed.

Shalom,

Rabbi G.

Chukat-Balak —Numbers 19:1-25:9 . This reading also contains the story of Moses striking the rock, the stories

of the deaths of Aaron and Miriam and the wars with the Amorites. The portion concludes with the host of Israel

encamping on the edge of the Promised Land.

Pinchas— Numbers 25:10-30:1. In this Torah portion, the LORD makes a covenant of peace with Phinehas and

his descendants, orders a second census, settles questions about inheritance, appoints Joshua to succeed Moses

and lists the sacrifices for the appointed times.

Matot-Massei—Numbers 30:2-36:13 The name of the forty-second reading from the Torah is Mattot ,)מטות(which

means "tribes." The name is derived from the words of Numbers 30:1, which says, "Then Moses spoke to the heads

of the tribes of the sons of Israel." Numbers 30 discusses the laws of vows and oaths. Numbers 31 tells the story of

Israel's war with Midian. Massei is the end of the continuous narrative of Torah that began in Genesis with the

creation of the universe. The narrative does not resume until the end of Deuteronomy, when Moses dies. n most

years, synagogues read Massei together with the preceding portion, Mattot, which accounts for the brevity of this

portion's commentary.

Devarim— Deuteronomy 11-3:22 As we study the first week's reading from the book of Exodus, the children of

Israel are assembled on the plains of Moab across the Jordan from Jericho.

TBH Task Force on Resuming Services & Activities Inside Our Building

At our recent Annual Meeting, it was announced that Temple Beth Hillel was establishing a Coronavirus Task Force

to coordinate the planning and management of resuming services and activities inside our building in a safe, strategic

way. This week, the Coronavirus Task Force held its first meeting, bringing together Temple members with expertise

in a broad range of areas.

Our goal is to return to Temple Beth Hillel for as much programming and as many activities as possible, as soon as is

feasible, while following all of the latest safety and health guidelines. We will maintain our virtual programming of

religious services and Rabbi’s messages, knowing that some of our members will not be able to enter the building for

the foreseeable future due to health and other restrictions.

In the very near future, members of the Task Force will be walking through the building, identifying areas where

modifications will be needed in order to provide an environment that meets all guidelines. We will be creating signs,

procuring personal protective equipment (masks and hand sanitizers) and communicating to our members about what

you will need to know before you re-enter the building. We will be sending out regular updates as this process un-

folds.

The Task Force is also seeking input from you – our members, and we have created an online survey

that we ask you to complete and submit by July 10th.

Here is the link for you to access the member survey: https://forms.gle/gEYV9JJhywh5FaAd8

If you receive your newsletter by mail, please print out and fill in the survey and return it to the temple office.

As Chair of the Task Force, Marla Adelsberger is eager to hear from you, with questions, concerns or feedback. You

can reach her at [email protected] or (860) 668-5501.

The other members of the committee include Mike Skott, Jill Bernstein, Leland Bradbard, Paula Bradbard, Karen

Groenstein, Deb Halpern, Marcia Heneson, Adam Kaprove, Sarah Kaprove, Jeff Levin, Phil Maltz, Carol Mamlok,

and Laura Soll-Broxterman, as well as Rabbi Glickman and Cantor Harris. Please feel free to contact any of the Task

Force members!

Hello Temple Beth Hillel Families-

These last few months have been different from what anyone has ever seen. While we continue to live in the now

normal that is Covid-19, we continue to look for ways to engage with each other. Different groups have started to

have small gatherings outside while maintaining social distancing. Our task force has started meeting and will be de-

veloping plans as we move forward. We want to make sure we are continuing to keep the best interest of every mem-

ber of our community.

On another note, it was 2 years ago that we completed the merger between Congregation Beth Ahm and Temple Beth

Hillel. This merger, the technical term, was truly a marriage of two families. Over the past two years we have shared

different rituals and traditions as we have become ONE FAMILY.

I wanted to thank you all for participating in our informational sessions leading up to and including our Congregation-

al Meeting, it was great to hear from so many of you.

l'shalom

Michael Skott

August 2nd Virtual 1950’s & 60’s Concert Benefits TBH

Exciting news! TBH will benefit from a fun live virtual fundraising concert that will help several local organi-

zations, including ours.

TBH is one of several beneficiaries of a Sunday, August 2nd virtual fun fundraiser for the entire family: a 7:30

p.m. live concert by the Elderly Brothers with great music from the 1950s and ‘60s. This event was created by

our friends at Temple Beth Sholom B’nai Israel (BSBI).

Here’s how TBH wins:

Admission to “attend” the live webinar is $20 per family.

When you register to attend/pay, respond to “how did you hear about it” and a pull-down list of options ap-

pears. Temple Beth Hillel of South Windsor is one of the options – for every person who checks our name,

we receive 40 percent (or $8) of each ticket. The other 60 percent of the admission will be shared by the Jew-

ish Hartford Rapid Relief & Recovery Fund, MARC of Manchester, and BSBI.

The flier is below and you click where indicated to register. We also will send the flier to all TBH mem-

bers in a separate email so you can forward it to friends and relatives – just remind them to check that they

heard about it from Temple Beth Hillel of South Windsor!

The more people we tell about this event and remind them to check that they heard about it from TBH, the

more funds we will raise for our Temple! If you have questions, please call Laura Soll-Broxterman at 860-688

-4499 or [email protected]

TBH “Virtual” Walk Against Hunger Team Coordinators

Foodshare’s annual “Walk Against Hunger” postponed its annual Spring event due to the Coronavirus and

instead will hold a Virtual event on September 13th. Participants are encouraged to find their own 1.5-mile

course to walk (on your own or social distancing with friends) to raise awareness of and resources for the is-

sue of food insecurity in Hartford and Tolland counties. Foodshare will celebrate on social media and contin-

ue the traditions of fun, community building, with some special surprises all week long!

TBH is seeking one or two people to organize our “virtual” Temple Walk Team of members and

friends. If you are interested or want more information about the role, please call Laura at 860-688-

4499 or [email protected]

Funds raised from the Walk help support not only Foodshare but the partner programs (like Hands On Hart-

ford) that help serve the growing number of people in Greater Hartford who struggle with hunger.

SHEMA TOUR UPDATE:

Drop-Offs/Pick-Ups of Summer Clothing, Food, Diapers & Toiletries

Over the past month, our support for the Walk in the Light Church in North Hartford has intensified. TBH

members have been dropping off bagged or boxed items to Laura Soll-Broxterman’s garage in Windsor and

others are volunteering to pick up items from members who do not yet want to leave their homes. We have

utilized your donations of funds to purchase and deliver food, baby formula and toiletries to deliver to Arch-

bishop Burke for distribution. We seek Summer clothing and socks –for all ages, male and female, clean

gently used or new. Also, non-perishable food items, disposable diapers, formula, travel-size toiletries,

and cases of water.

In addition, Archbishop Burke has rolled up his sleeves and is painting and renovating the church’s interior in

preparation for reopening at some point in the future. TBH is helping by providing two new ceiling fans for

the sanctuary since the old church does not have central air conditioning.

We still cannot accept donations inside the Temple. So, if you feel comfortable doing so, you are welcome to

bring any clothing, food, toiletries, or summer clothing to Laura’s house at 13 Cleary Lane in Windsor and

leave in the garage. OR contact her and she can arrange for a member to come pick them up.

If you want to volunteer to pick up donations from members’ homes, please let Laura know at 860-688-4499

or [email protected]

As always, if you want to donate funds for the purchase of items, please mail a check to the Temple or call

Lori in the office to use a credit card.

Hands On Hartford Volunteer Program Still On Hold

Until the onset of COVID-19, a dozen TBH members volunteered twice a month at Hands On Hartford, a non

-profit organization in Hartford. We sor t, chop and bag fresh vegetables and fruit for its Kitchen to

Pantry program for people in need in the community. Unfortunately, that program is still On Hold, but new

volunteers will be needed and welcome when it resumes. We will keep you posted as our Temple learns more.
