The ex ante emissions reductions for the project have been estimated in Section
B.6.4. The annual average for the five-year crediting period is 21,938 t CO2/year. This
is considerably below the small-scale limit of 60,000 t CO2/year. While the ex ante
estimate is approximate, it is impossible for measured fuel savings to be so high as to
exceed the small-scale limit.
A.5 Funding sources of project
>>The project is funded by resources of the project proponent, Golden Union
Shipping Company S.A., based in Greece with its registered office address in Panama.
From the PDD Template guide: Comment for project
Indicate whether the project activity receives public funding. If any public funding is received, provide information on the sources of the public funding.
The project activity would be undertaken by private investments. No public funding is received.
For carbon credit projects taking place in Project proponent is based in Greece with
None of the ships in the project use LNG, so only CO2 emissions are considered, both
for baseline and project scenarios, see below. Propulsion fuels are heavy fuel oil (HFO)
with varying sulphur content as required by standards. MDO may also be used as a
propulsion fuel.

B.4. Establishment and description of baseline scenario
>> The baseline scenario is as specified in the GS methodology. The measures refer to energy efficiency improvements so that they meet applicable legislation. There is no suppressed demand baseline. Details to be completed
The project type is not deemed automatically additional. Additionality will be demonstrated as indicated in the GS methodology, based on the CDM Additionality Tool. To be completed prior to formal submission.
B.5.1 Prior Consideration
>>
Normally, Gold Standard projects need to be submitted within one year of the project start date. However, there is an exception for projects using this methodology.
As noted in Gold Standard for Global Goals Principles & Requirements, section 3.4.7.4 (https://globalgoals.goldstandard.org/retroactive-projects-eligibility/),
“The following exceptions have been introduced through this Rule Update:
2.1 Requirement for retroactive projects applying the methodology Retrofit Energy Efficiency Measures in shipping>>
Considering the unique nature of the shipping sector activities and the intricate methodology requirements for data collection, the prior consideration requirements have been revised for retroactive project applying the methodology “Retrofit Energy Efficiency Measures in shipping”. The projects applying this methodology can submit the required documents to Gold Standard for preliminary review within two years of its start date. This rule change is applicable with effect from the date of publication.”
This PDD is being submitted within two years of retrofit application.
B.5.2 Ongoing Financial Need
>>As per GS rules, this information is only needed for Design Certification Renewal.

Estimated 10 training sessions and conference presentations, including both within company as well as external, assuming two per year for the duration of the crediting period.
B.6.4 Summary of ex ante estimates of each SDG Impact
SDG 13. Climate change mitigation. The indicator is tCO2 emissions reduction. The
methodology requires the use of baseline data to establish a relationship of ship fuel
consumption to ship speed and other parameters. Using this relationship, a dynamic
baseline fuel consumption and emissions are determined for each trip in the project
scenario. Ex-ante fuel savings are estimated as a % of fuel consumption, itself
determined by ship size, distance travelled in a year and a fuel consumption rate.
Emissions reduction are determined by fuel savings multiplied by an emissions factor
for the fuel consumption in question. Thus there are no separate estimates for
baseline and project emissions, rather a direct estimate of emissions reduction. These
estimates, that will be detailed in an Excel workbook in the formal submission are
General comments on all the data tables in this section:
• Emissions reduction is determined from a regression analysis of baseline fuel consumption and from daily / voyage measurements during the project period. Hence, for each of the variables below, the row “Data applied” is not applicable, since all the data tables are needed to determine emissions reduction. In some cases, data are needed to disqualify ships from participating in the VPA or to limit the period over which emissions reduction may be credited. Hence in all tables below, the row “Data applied” is filled in as “N.A.” (not applicable).
• Emissions reduction is determined by comparing fuel consumption for each day /voyage in the project fuel consumption with the fuel that the ship would have consumed under similar conditions in the baseline period (determined by regression analysis of data over the entire baseline period). Hence the table row “Purpose of data” cannot be separated into items needed for the determination of baseline and project emissions. Hence in all tables below, the row “Purpose of data” is filled in as “N.A.” (not applicable).
For each participating ship in the VPA record the data shown in the following tables:
For long voyages, ships are at sea between ports, and certain data are recorded in ship logs. These are normally called “Noonday data”, since the data are recorded at noon of each day. For ships operating in long routes, for each day of both the baseline and the project period, each of the following data variables should be recorded. For ships operating on shorter voyages, typically lasting less than a couple of days, “Voyage data” need to be recorded. However, all ships in this project operate on long routes, so “Voyage data” are not needed.
QA/QC procedures Distance, time elapsed and average speed may be cross-checked to detect transcription or other errors. In some cases, a correction may be possible, else data item should be deleted.
Purpose of data Needed to determine ship speed (except when directly recorded), which is the main determination of fuel consumption rate, needed in methodology calculations.
Description Hours of sailing since last daily record
Source of data Ship operator, in ship logs
Value(s) applied Travel hours as recorded in ship logs
Measurement methods and procedures
Clock
Monitoring frequency Daily
QA/QC procedures Distance, time elapsed and average speed may be cross-checked to detect transcription or other errors. In some cases, a correction may be possible, else data item should be deleted.
Purpose of data Together with distance travelled, used to determine ship speed (except when directly recorded), which is the main determination of fuel consumption rate, needed in methodology calculations.
QA/QC procedures Recorded speed can be compared with distance travelled and time, so that anomalous recordings can be corrected or data item eliminated.
Purpose of data Ship speed is the most important determinant of fuel consumption rate.
Description Sea state, noted at the time of daily data recording
Source of data Ship operator
Value(s) applied As recorded in ship logs for the day in question
Measurement methods and procedures
Observation
Monitoring frequency Daily
QA/QC procedures None, since the data depends on observations.
Purpose of data Very high values of sea state correspond to stormy conditions. Data for these conditions are not considered for analysis in the baseline or project periods.
Monitoring frequency Daily. However, value will not change significantly during any voyage
QA/QC procedures Loading condition recorded as Ballast/Laden can be compared with ship draft or displacement when recorded.
Purpose of data For some ship categories (see below), performance is substantially different for loaded and ballast conditions. Hence data for these two conditions need to be analyzed separately, both for baseline and project.
Additional comments Loading condition is only relevant for certain ship categories, such as bulk loader, tanker, etc.
Description Fuel consumption of the main engine since last daily record
Source of data Ship operator, in ship logs
Value(s) applied
Measurement methods and procedures
