clared insurance write-offs.

This is because they’re either

too badly damaged to ever

be repaired and put safely

back on the road or simply

cost too much in parts and

labour to justify the expense.

Unfortunately, some of

these cars fall into unscru-

pulous hands and are ille-

gally patched up or welded

together, ready to be sold to

unsuspecting buyers.

“What looks like a dream

car at a dream price, could

actually be a Frankenstein

car, stitched together from

two insurance write-offs

that are fit only for the sc-

rapheap,” warns www.hpi-

check.com Senior Consum-

er Services Manager, Shane

Teskey. “Criminals create cut

‘n’ shuts using two oppo-

site halves of written off cars

that are the same make and

model.

They are welded together

by a skilled mechanic and

spray painted to form a car

that’s then sold on to in-

nocent consumers at what

looks like a bargain price.

CHARLIE LEAVES WALFORDBEHIND

1**.indd 1

15/12/2014 15:17

16 / www.wrekinnews.co.uk

Best known as Eastenders troublemaker Janine

Butcher, bringing drama to Albert Square with a

medley of cocaine addition, murder and prostitution,

Charlie Brooks is now taking her talent on tour,

playing Sandra in the iconic play, Beautiful Thing.

Editor Dave Gregory met up with Charlie recently

and had a chat.

The ‘Walford

witch’ has finally left

the east end, and

now we’ll be seeing

Charlie Brooks in a wholly

different incarnation.

The actress has ap-

peared in episodes of The

Bill, Jonathans Creek and,

of course, eastenders, but

come spring, she’ll be tak-

ing on the theatre, appear-

ing in Beautiful Thing.

The play follows two

young men, Jaimie and Ste,

and their blossoming ro-

mance in an inner city hous-

ing estate. Together the two

boys find comedy, warmth

and the music of Mama

Cass through their loud-

mouthed next door neigh-

bour leah. Brooks plays

Sandra, Jamie’s mum and

the local barmaid. I asked

her if she was looking for-

ward to the challenge.

“What doesn’t attract me

to the play?” Brooks grins. “I

was obsessed with the film

when I was a kid, I watched

it like 100 times, I was one

of the cult followers really. I

remember seeing Surrane

(Jones) in the play last year

and going: ‘ooh, I want to

do that, put me in it! lo

and behold, a year or two

later here I am, so it’s like a

dream come true.”

It’s hard for bubbly

Brooks to pinpoint exactly

why the iconic play reso-

nates with her: “Just the

content of the story,” she

starts. “I went to theatre

school where I had lots of

gay friends - I had a boy-

friend that was gay!” she

laughs. “So it’s always been

important, the performances

in the film were just amazing

and it’s a great character for

me, so it’s a rally big draw all

round really.”

and Beautiful Thing still

endures to this day, despite

being over 20 years old.

“There are still, especially

in the regional areas where

we are touring, people go-

ing through this very same

issue and people still ter-

rified of coming out, they

don’t know how to do it and

they are scared of talking

about it. I think that it’s a

timeless play, it’s brilliant,

it’s funny, it’s sad, and I

think that it speaks to a lot

of people still.”

I suggest that the role

of strong young mum San-

dra seems a happy fit for

Brooks; “are you saying I’m

a feisty single mum?!” the

actress laughs. “What I’m

hoping to do is to bring a

great deal of warmth to it,

know what I mean? She’s

feisty, she’s loud, she’s not

afraid to speak her mind,

she’s had a hard life and

fought to be where she is,

fought to bring up that little

boy, so the relationship that

they have is one that’s very

special in the end.” adding:

“I’ve got some of the best

lines - I just can’t wait to say

them.” Calling this, ‘completely

different’ from the television

work for which she is best

known, however, Brooks

is feeling the nerves. “With

learning lines in eastenders,

they go in very quickly, it’s

in and out because it’s so

quick and so fast paced. I

haven’t done a great deal

of theatre so this is all quite

new, so I’m shi**ing it to be

honest! I just hope I’m ok.

But it’s so exciting.”

It’s nerve-wracking, but

it’s a positive step forward

for the actress and mum

of one. “I am busy, but it’s great

because I feel like I am

achieving what I set out to

when I left eastenders, so

I feel really, really lucky,”

she says.

The 18 week tour will

also take her away from her

daughter, Kiki, and it wasn’t

an easy decision to come to.

“I love being at home, I

love it. My daughter is 10

now which is such an im-

portant time and I’ve never

been away or gone away

with work, so when this

came up I had a lengthy

conversation with my imme-

diate family members and

decided that it was now my

turn to be able to go off and

spend time away.

“We have a few days off

in-between theatre moves

so I’ll be able to get back

and she’ll also come down

and see me, so we’re going

to make it work. But I am a

bit nervous about it.

“She is very adaptable

and my mum is there and

her dad is there so I have a

brilliant support system, we

have a close knit family.”

and even when the tour

comes to a close, the stage

will be calling once again.

“I’m starting another play

called Contact at the Park

Theatre in finsbury. It’s a

new play about swinging!

It’s a bit raunchy, which I’m

a bit nervous about but it’s

exciting!”

Charlie is just as bubbly

off screen as on it. She’s

ambitious about breaking

the typecasting mould and

we wish her luck with it.

Charlie Brooks will star as

‘Sandra’ in Beautiful Thing,

touring the UK from 23

March 2015.

OUR A&E

IS STILL UNDER THREAT

SINCE WE had no

car we had to go by

bus to Wellington

and from there on

to Shrewsbury by train, while

all the time he was screwing

his face in agony.

All in all, from the time of

his injury to the time he re-

ceived any treatment almost

three hours had passed.

Last year in a somewhat

similar incident, my nephew

was in the A & E department

of PRH within 15 minutes of

the incident and receiving

treatment.

Besides the fact that my

family is accident prone and

as such a regular user of

A&E departments, the point

I am making is that our town

must have a full 24x7 A&E at

the PRH to give everyone the

best and fastest treatment

when needed.

Telford is the largest town

in Shropshire, we are experi-

encing strong growth in our

Borough, the surrounding

part of Shropshire, Shifnal

for example, is also grow-

ing fast. We also have an

above average manufactur-

ing base, but more impor-

tantly we have above aver-

age levels of deprivation. For

all these reasons we must

have a full, modern 24/7 A&E

service at the PRH.

Back in September

2013 when I put a motion

to Telford & Wrekin Council

calling for such an A&E ser-

vice at PRH, it was backed

unanimously by councillors

of all political parties.

Last month in this pub-

lication Wrekin PM Mark

Pritchard claimed that

Labour politicians were

‘scaremongering’ and that

we ‘should be ashamed of

ourselves’ because he has

been reassured that there is

no danger of Telford losing

its A&E. Yet he produces no

evidence of this other than

to say he has been given an

explicit reassurance. How-

ever, in a letter sent to me

after this article was printed,

the Secretary of State for

Health dodged giving any

assurances and said: “.......

The configuration of local

health service is a matter

for the local NHS. Therefore

it would not be appropri-

ate for Ministers to intervene

in these local decisions.” I

would therefore challenge

Mark Pritchard to show the

public proof of the assur-

ance he is claiming.

Our A & E at PRH is still

under threat, don’t let Mark

Pritchard try to pull the wool

over our eyes – he is playing

with words. We clearly have

been told by those carrying

out the review of hospital

services that there are three

In our last issue Mark Pritchard, MP for The Wrekin,

said our A&E services in Telford would be safe.

Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, Kuldip Sohota is

not so sure as he told our editor Dave Gregory in an

interview recently.

In the early seventies, while playing football on Ketley

Fields, my brother broke his arm. It was a Sunday

afternoon and we were told by our GP on the phone to

take him to the Royal Shrewsbury Infirmary which, some

you of may remember, was in the centre of the town. It’s what our

residents

deserve and it’s

our responsibility

as elected

representatives

to fight for

our residents

in Telford and

Wrekin. I make

no apology for

fighting against

any downgrade

at our local

hospital – the

PRH.

T ELFORD & Wrekin Council and Welling-ton Town Council are working together to deliver the next stage of regeneration of Wellington’s town centre. The Town Council ap-proached TWC after com-missioning a report on a vi-sion for Wellington’s future until 2020.

A report to the TWC cabi-net meeting has resulted in a collaboration between the councils to put this into ac-tion.TWC invested over £11m in Wellington between 2009 and 2013, including the new civic buildings. The devel-opment included £3.5m of other improvements, includ-ing the new bus station.TWC raised £2.6m by property sales in town. 65 houses are being built and 21,000 sq ft of offices are back in use.

A Project Board of Town Council representatives and TWC officers is working to make the vision a reality. The study identified:● Support for more qual-ity independent shops in Wellington● Residential development in Wellington’s centre● Leisure and hospitality will

be a vital part of a revived WellingtonThe board’s created a

two year action plan. It fo-cuses on land and activities in Wellington and will iden-tify funding. A business case will be developed for each project.Wellington Council’s providing £25,000 funding, matched by TWC in officer time.

To launch the plans, the Cabinet’s approved spend-ing £180,000 of Housing

Development capital pro-gramme funds. The Councils will stage a public exhibition and con-sultation in early 2015.Councillor Charles Smith, Borough cabinet member, Housing, Development and Borough Towns, said: “We’re delighted to be work-ing with the town council on this.”Councillor Phil Morris-

Jones, deputy mayor of Wellington, said: “The resi-dential and leisure propos-als, with the large amount of capital investment means Wellington is the town where new shops are welcome.”A spokesman for Wrekin News said: “This is a fillip for our “Shop Local, Shop Wrekin” campaign as any proposal to boost local trade is welcome.”

A total of 25 new recruits, including two from Wel-lington, completed their intensive initial training course in firefighter train-ing at the Telford training school and now have the “key” qualities including the ability to keep going “when it gets tough” and the physical courage to

complete the demands put upon them, said Chief Fire Officer John Redmond, at their “passing out” cer-emony.

“You have now not only become a member of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service but also a member of a select group of people from your lo-

cal fire station who are held in high esteem by the people in your local com-munities.”

Craig Rees works as a warehouse operative and Luke Brown enjoys sport and keep fit. They will both be based at Wellington Fire Station as “on call” firefighters.

KINGS MENSWEAR is celebrating after earning an award at a ceremony in

Warwickshire. Kings Menswear and the

other winners from 23 cat-egories will go forward to

represent the West Midlands

in the National Finals to be

held in London in January.“We’re delighted and we

thank all our customers for

their support. It’s been a

pleasure to be involved in

so many weddings this past

year.”Founder of The Wedding

Industry Awards, Damian

Bailey said: “The Wedding

Industry Awards are the gold

standard for wedding excel-lence and, as our regional

award ceremony proved, the

Midland’s wedding industry

is packed with passionate,

innovative and committed

suppliers.” “This is our fourth awards.

The standard of entrants was

higher than ever,” he added.

“It’s harder for our judges

to pick winners from such

amazing shortlists. It was

great to celebrate every-one’s achievements.”

With the UK wedding in-dustry worth some £10bil-lion annually, it’s no surprise

wedding suppliers work

hard to stand out. Happily,

for these winners, they’ve

now got a coveted award

to help them woo clients in

2015.Check out the full list
