A Fellow of the Royal College of Music, Professor of the London College of Music, former Yes keyboard player, Watchdog presenter and renowned Grumpy Old Man, Rick Wakeman has led a rich and varied life. In his one-man solo show, he recounts hi- larious and unlikely an- ecdotes from a career which has included mu- sical collaborations with David Bowie, Cat Stevens and Elton John, as well as worldwide tours with his own bands, punctuated by displays of dazzling virtuosity on the piano. This show was a sell- out success at the Ed- inburgh Fringe, where it won rave reviews and quickly became a ‘must- see’ of the festival. Come along and find out why life is rarely dull for Rick or those around him! The Music and Anecdotal Wit of an Old Age Pensioner. Wrekin News have com- bined with Theatre Severn to offer a pair of tickets to see Yes! Another Evening With Rick Wakeman! The show is on Friday 27 March at the Theatre Severn. All you have to do is an- swer this easy question. Rick Wakeman has done a lot of varied things in his life but he started life as a keyboard player in a pop group. What is the name of that group, remember the clues are in the question. Please send your an- swers to us either by post or email, giving full contact details. LETTERS YOUR email the Editor: [email protected] send your letters to: Wrekin News Bridge Road, Wellington, Telford Shropshire TF1 1RY The Heath’s legacy > Terry Heath’s hosted some top groups, not all soul, sometimes a little different just like the night Pans People were on stage. The group of girls were regulars on BBC’s Top of the Pops at the time. S O GREAT times and great people! There are so many people that I can remem- ber and I am sure there are many more that I can’t but here are some of the great people that I recall from Heaths, I have already men- tioned many of the boys so here to start with are some of the girls, Eve Sweeney, Helen Hammond, Maria Fletcher, Jill Williams, Mar- garet Flavin, Sue Sankey, Rose Brophy, Chris Pearce, Sue Aims, Pat Machin, Mo Battershall, Kath Clarke, Pat Williams, Shelia Heywood, Karen Ball, Gill Adams, Elsa Stex, Sue Clemson, Chris King, Chris France, Louise and Sue Turner, Pauline Flavin, Jackie Butler, June Duncan, Hillary Stiller, little Hazel, Alison Wood, Mary Ragonesi, Sue and Veron- ica Brown, June Bray, Sue Bray, Wendy Buckle, Trudy Orchard, Stella Hughes, Mo Parker, Jean Tromans, (married name), Sue San- key, Rose Brophy, Liz Plum, Brenda (now Kipper’s wife), Denise Corbett and Angela. Dot Lock, Sue Andrews, and Dear Mavis. And some more of the guys Derek Griffiths ‘Giffer’ – who teamed up with Joe Dean to become Giff and Joe the DJs that stood-in at Heaths when Cyril was not available, John Wilson, Keith Lawley (Kipper), Rob Fielding, Mick Nicklin, Rich Pardoe, Roger Bates, Dave Bagnall, Kenny Holland, Don ‘Sticky’ Broome, Kev Jones, Dave White, Mike Hunt, John Butler, Dave Stanworth, Stan Jackson, Dave Pascall, Tom McNulty, Don Allen, Stan Foulkes, John Meakin, Clive Kitson, John Jewell, Dave Phillips, Pete O’Sullivan, Stu- art Waters, Steve Foskett, Mike Carline, Micky Ward, Phil Taylor, Gilroy, Teddy and Erol, Bruno, Martin Keyes and many, many more. My sincere apologies to anyone that I have omitted. By the early 70s many of the names above married and started a family life, so stopped going to Heaths. Liz, my wife, and my last regular visits were probably around 1972, although we did attend a couple of reun- ions in the early 80’s. Heaths carried on in vari- ous guises or so I believe, but I don’t really think that the Heaths family that was created from 1967 to 1972/3 was ever repeated. The Town House, the Drumbeat Club, it didn’t really matter to most of us what it was called because it was Heaths to us - a unique atmosphere for a great bunch of people, many of whom I am still in regular contact with and who regularly come along to our Top Drawer Soul charity soul events. So these are my memo- ries of Heaths, I am sure that other people may be differ- ent but I am also sure that their enjoyment of Heaths will be equal to mine. The legacy that Heaths has left us is the endearing friendships and of course the music. Our Top Drawer Soul nights, now in their thirteenth year, have in to- tal raised approaching forty thousand pounds for chari- ties and good causes. Mi- icky Ward and Phil Taylor’s MB Soulshow, Severn Soul, Telford Soul Club and the new St George’s Soul Club all host regular soul events, and whilst some of these clubs play more modern northern soul music, the roots all stem from the music played at Heaths. So thank you Terry, thank you Cyril and thanks to all the people that attended, I am so glad to have been there at the start and made so many good and lasting friendships. Finally thanks to Alison (Terry Heaths daughter) for allowing us to use the pho- tographs. Following on from the last issue the continuing story of soul music at Terry Heaths, Rob Corbett finishes his epic tour of the dance scene in Wellington in the late 60’s and early 70’s. On the subject of the Majestic, David Whitaker from Leighton rang in to say that he worked in Astons furniture shop which was just about next door to the Majestic Ballroom. He recalls giving his mate Albert Archer a lift to pick up his girlfriend on the way to the Majestic. David decided to go in with them and inevitably met a very attractive girl who asked him if he wanted a drink. Be- ing a perfect gentleman, David insisted on buying her a drink but whatever he said she insisted on buying him a pint of beer. With that she went behind the bar and started to pull a pint. It turned out that the girl was Evelyn, the daugh- ter of Albert Giles the owner! It’s estimated that’s the amount not being passed on at the pumps to consumers follow- ing the biggest, most sus- tained period of falls in oil prices in recent memory. Lead campaigner for Fair- FuelUK, TV broadcaster and motoring journalist Quentin Willson said: “Brent crude’s fallen $49 since June and shocked the global econ- omy. So why don’t pump prices reflect the lowest oil wholesale price for five years? Something’s deeply wrong in the road fuel mar- ket. We need an investigation into why these low prices aren’t being passed on to consumers. The standard of entrants was higher than ever,” he added. “It’s harder for our judges to pick winners from such amazing shortlists. It was great to celebrate every- one’s achievements.” With the UK wedding in- dustry worth some £10bil- lion annually, it’s no surprise wedding suppliers work hard to stand out.
