Total control

Telea helps managers to provide and manage urban lighting that’s fully integrated and responsive to today’s environmental, revenue and maintenance challenges.

Forty per cent of a city’s electricity bill is spent on urban lighting and sharply rising energy costs are straining municipality budgets. Against this background, lighting installation design has been influenced by a growing demand among residents for improved safety and enriched lifestyle patterns, and generally by overall environmental considerations.

This has resulted in increased attention being given to ‘smart’ technology. Although less visible it conserves resources and extends flexibility in terms of lighting provision to meet the needs of citizens.

Telea is the control system that enables managers to design, manage and monitor city lighting more easily, more comprehensively and more economically. Suitable for use in applications of all sizes, both existing and new build, Telea is the flexible technology that gives managers a single point of control over any lighting scheme.

Unique to Thorn Lighting, Telea comprises a complete range of fittings with controllability designed-in. These components can be combined to address the demands of urban amenity lighting and floodlighting as well as traditional street lighting, giving managers a complete and flexible solution for every lighting problem.

The programme is based on the principle that Performance, Efficiency and Comfort determine the effectiveness of lighting, its impact on the people using it, and its impact on the natural environment. Telea delivers the right light in the right place at the right time.

Performance: providing the best visual effectiveness

reliable solution for all lighting topologies thanks to a unique combination of communication technologies

Efficiency: Conserving energy and effort, reducing CO2 emissions and waste, providing lighting that is practical and efficient to install, operate and maintain

of savings through reduced consumption of energy and optimised maintenance schedules

Comfort: giving people satisfaction and stimulation

individually, ensuring maximum comfort and enabling light to be provided when and where it is needed

The combination of Telea with efficient light sources and gears enables considerable energy savings to be achieved; the latest electronic gear technology offers even more saving potential through increased efficiency and flexibility in use.

Telea evokes the spirit of Thorn Lighting’s dynamic, results-orientated PEC programme

Performance, Efficiency and Comfort (PEC) for a better lit environment

In addition to individual addressing, Telea offers the security of continuous lighting performance in all areas for the well-being of the city's inhabitants

No Manual InspectionTelea removes the need for systematic lamp check-up.

Efficient MaintenanceTelea enables maintenance to be organised and pro-active.

Less Lamp ReplacementTelea, when combined with efficient lamp and gear technologies, reduces the frequency of costly lamp replacements.

Environmentally Friendly SolutionThe key to sustainability in lighting is eco-design, efficient operation and planned recycling. These are fundamental considerations in the PEC programme and in the creation of Telea.

Reduced CO2 EmissionsThe generation of electrical energy required for lighting is a major contributor to CO2 emissions (1 kWh of energy = 0.42kg of CO2). The most energy consumption by the product is clearly during operation and much of this can be reduced by Telea. Indeed, Europe could save 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 by switching to energy efficient street lighting.

Whilst most areas may have reduced light output, Telea assures all critical

areas are fully and constantly lit

Telea offers the flexibility to create and recall scenes, ie the

combination of groups of luminaires with pre-defined light

Because Telea operates autonomously at light point level, it ensures normal operation even in the event of a communication

Powerline and Radio Frequency

Telea uses the benefits of two data transmission media: powerline and radio frequency, both proven for their reliability and security. In both cases, no dedicated cable is necessary, making it easy to install new installations as well as upgrade existing ones.

Remote monitoring through the Central Management Entrance (CME)

The CME software enables total control and monitoring of Telea outdoor lighting facilities.

Though the Telea system is autonomous at field level with Comboxes and Luminaire Controllers, the CME Server provides the real interface for the user, with a complete intuitive tool for day-to-day maintenance facility. An operator at a desktop PC can control all streetlights in the city and access any error messages to trigger required action

The CME provides intelligent reporting and allows operators to implement reactive and efficient decisions

Fault reportingThe list of errors that can be monitored by the Server includes:

Measurement reportingThe measurements performed by the Luminaire Controllers are processed and displayed to enable pro-active maintenance:

life hours

As well as reporting faults, the CME supports pro-active maintenance, alerting staff when standard operating limits are exceeded. It is particularly useful for lamp management, allowing operators to compare actual burning hours with predicted life.

Lighting management is sometimes combined with other facilities systems; the CME provides open interface possibilities for enhanced integration

Open interface protocolsThe CME software has been designed to allow the sharing of information with other systems. For example, data can be exported to a Geographical Information System (GIS) where any part of the network can be highlighted for easy control or to display any fault.

The system can also interface with standard management applications such as BACnet and OPC.

The CME has a user friendly interface. Its helpful screens allow operators to configure their installation, obtain information and monitor performance

A complete solution

Telea is versatile and flexible. Entire lighting networks can be specified and supplied fully configured and ready for installation. The technology can also be retro-fitted to many existing lighting platforms

Pre-installed Telea technology makes specification of an integrated system quick and easy, so users can benefit from its performance as soon as it is installed. In order to avoid the difficulty of selecting and matching numerous items from a catalogue a single ordering code covers the luminaire and controller.

Each composite luminaire is tested to ensure that it operates as intended, is operationally effective and complies with standards relating to dimensions, thermal performance and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

Examples of Telea-equipped luminaires

Page 13: Telea - Welcome to the Thorn Lighting website — Sverige ... tray compartment and comply with all regulations. 3 4 5 Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) validation in Thorn's laboratory

13

A matter of qualityAs the Thorn Lighting laboratory is accredited to perform Supervised Manufacturer's Testing (SMT), Telea luminaires can be tested and validated in-house against all key criteria, including thermal requirements.

It also ensures that the luminaire will perform perfectly for its full operating life after a controller is fitted in the gear tray compartment and comply with all regulations.

Commissioning and Technical SupportThe guarantee of a successful approach

Thorn does not install lighting equipment, but will work closely

scheme associates to provide the required assistance, advice, and support. The main responsibilities of the installer include the installation and wiring of Comboxes, Luminaire Controllers, phone

and the CME Server within the internal network. Additional responsibilities cover installation mapping, luminaire numbering and positioning and area organisation.

The role of the Thorn service technician is to assist with the commissioning of the lighting equipment and services as specifi ed in the project. Typical duties cover on-site training, installation checkout and setting up the Comboxes and Server (addressing the light points and programmes).

We at Thorn have found that the best results are achieved when the cost of design, commissioning, testing and documentation is clarifi ed with your Thorn Sales offi ce at the start of each separate project.

Technological we may be. Inaccessible we are not - with everything that means to you as a client. Accessibility, of course. On-site expertise. Easy communication. Environmental integrity. Thorn’s design team and service technicians work with your planners and installers, from inception to completion - and beyond.
