TEKS/Essence Statements: 8) Economics. The student understands the circular-flow model of the economy. Critical Skills/Postsecondary Goals: This section needs to be completed based on students in your class. Instruction/Classroom Activities: Small Group Instruction: Let's Go Camping! Because money is a limited resource, people must make important choices about how to spend it. These choices often involve trade-offs; people must often give up buying one thing in order to buy something else. In order to help students to understand the concept of trade-offs, ask students to imagine that they are going on a camping trip and have $120.00 (money that they have saved) to spend on some camping supplies. The local camping supply store offers certain types of supplies (listed below) at the specified prices. Ask students: Which supplies will you buy and why? Which supplies will you choose to go without? Tell students that each of them will need to make a list of the supplies that he or she will buy, the prices for each item, the total amount that he or she will spend, and the reasons that he or she has made these particular choices. When students have completed the activity, initiate a class discussion about the choices that the students made. Which items were most commonly chosen by the students? Which items were the least popular choices? What were the factors that influenced the students’ decisions in making trade-offs? Supplies carried by the camping supply store: tent for 3 people - $60 tent for 2 people - $35 emergency blanket - $15 emergency towel - $3 utensils - $3 sewing kit - $3 rain poncho - $5 lightweight radio - $30 matches - $3 6" hunting knife - $12 Swiss army knife - $25 fire starter kit - $7 flashlight - $8 compass - $10 cooking set - $30 canteen - $6 emergency candle - $7 binoculars - $30 emergency supply kit - $25 backpack - $40 Stations/Centers: Word Wall/Vocabulary Activities Computer Research Drawing/Writing Station Individualized Communication Planning: This section needs to be completed based on the individualized communication needs of the students in your class.
