inspiration of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.
Our Mission Statement
We, as members of the Tekakwitha Conference inspired by Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, a young, Mohawk/Algonquin woman of the 17th century, renew our faith and reaffirm our baptismal call as followers of Jesus to
proclaim the Good News. We pray with faith and hope for the continued intercession of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha in the lives of all Peoples.

Dear Friends of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha,
A New Year with hope renewed, Jesus has been revealed to us in glory and has brought love to the land. People of every race and nation will be blessed. Jesus, the Word of God and son of Mary help us to live the gospel, transform our lives to follow you and to be of service to our brothers and sisters.
As we continue our spiritual journey in this new year, let us reflect on the teachings of Jesus known to us as the Beatitudes. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me, rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. (Matt 5:1-11)
Together, let us live the ‘Joy of the Gospel’ as instruments of Comfort, Peace and Love to a suffering people and world.
May 2018 bring greater peace and harmony knowing that Jesus, the eternal Word is always with us and that Saint Kateri Tekakwitha continues to walk with her sisters and brothers.
Peace and joy of Christ be yours,
Tekakwitha Conference

Saint Kateri Prayer
By: Harold Caldwell
O Saint Kateri, Lily of the Mohawks,
Your love for Jesus, so strong, so steadfast,
pray that we may become like you.
Your short and painful life
showed us your strength and humility.
Pray that we may become
Forever humble like you.
Like the bright and shining stars at night,
we pray that your light
may forever shine down upon us,
giving light, hope, peacefulness
and serenity in our darkest moments.
Fill our hearts, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha
with your same love for Jesus
and pray that we may have the strength and courage
to become one like you in Heaven.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for the Canonization of Nicholas Black Elk
Grandfather! Great Spirit! Behold us, who stand before you, singing our song of thanksgiving for your beloved servant, Nicholas Black Elk. Faithfully he walked the Sacred Red Road and generously witnessed the Good News of our Lord, Jesus Christ among Native people. Grandfather, we humbly ask you, to hear the prayers we plead through his intercession. We
ask Holy Mother Church to recognize his sanctity, by acknowledging his presence among the company of saints and as one to imitate in his zeal for the Gospel. Open our hearts to also recognize the Risen Christ in other cultures and peoples, to the glory and honor of God the Father. Mitakuye Oyasin (All my relatives)
Prayer for the Beatification of the Servants of God Antonio Cuipa and Companions O God, Father of all nations, you have summoned us
to announce the freedom of your children. We thank you for calling your Servants Antonio Cuipa and his companions to proclaim the Catholic faith
during the birth of a new nation.
May their example of suffering and forgiveness give us the courage to bear witness to Christ in our own
time. We also pray that they be counted one day among your saints.
Through the intercession of your Servants, grant us the following grace which we ask from your loving
kindness: (here make your request) We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
With ecclesiastical approval: X Gregory L. Parkes
Bishop of Pensacola-Tallahassee

Our Kateri Circles in action CURRENT REGIONAL BOARD MEMBERSHIP
Dear Conference Members, As you can see from page 2 of this edition of the Cross and Feathers, we now have four Regional Members of the Board. Regions 2, 3 and 5 have no representation at this time due to several factors. When you nominate or second the nomination for a Candidate from your Region, PLEASE follow the posted Guide-lines that are always printed in the Cross and Feathers in plenty of time prior to the Annual Tekakwitha Conference. For those who are nominated, PLEASE complete all preliminary steps before the Annual Conference so that you are in a position to share your Vision Statement at your Regional Meeting. The four current Members are able to carry on the business of the Conference, as needed, but every Region deserves to have representation. So, please, do your part to make that happen. Please look for more information on this topic in the future issues of the Cross and Feathers. Thank you! Your Board of Directors

CIRI’s Elder of the Year award recognizes a CIRI Elder who
exemplifies the values and qualities important to CIRI shareholders
and Alaska Native people. Born in a sod house in 1937 in Hooper
Bay, Alaska, Gemma drove a dog sled and gathered ice for drinking
and cooking. She was one of the first women to leave the village to
attend the Mt. Edgecumbe nursing school in Sitka. Over her more
than 20 years as a nurse Gemma fiercely advocated for children, with a
particular focus on anti-bullying initiatives and access to medical care
and services for all.
Married for 46 years to the late Kenneth Gaudio, Gemma has two
daughters and four grandchildren. She still weaves the Hooper
Bay-style grass baskets, practices a subsistence lifestyle and shares her
Yup’ik culture, stories and wisdom with youth.
Gemma is a faithful leader for the Aurora Lights Kateri Circle in
Anchorage. Congratulations from all of us!
