Hi TZ, I really love your mag. I was wondering how much better it would be if you can do something on Ed Sheeran (poster or article) and R5. Thanks a lot, love you. Elisheva KrugerHi Elisheva, look out for the June issue. I don’t think you will be disappointed J

Thank you TeenZone mag for the posters! My wall is PERFECT! Jabulile Nkosi

Hey Jabulile, so glad we could help! Be sure to look out for many more posters of all your

favourite celebs to come in the future!

Hey TeenZone mag. I’m loving how you started this year with the boy bands on the cover! Please focus on girl bands too. Please include Fifth Harmony on the cover as well. Thank you. Cecilia

Hey Cecilia, yes, we have been busy. We love your suggestion for girl bands on the cover. What do our other readers say? Please let me know at [email protected]. Nominate your bands too!

Great tasks are completed one step at a time and with the support of the community. So we have

decided to focus on our environment for the month of May to see if we can make a difference.

Our world is something we all have to invest in because you, your children and your children’s children need to use all its natural resources to survive. You may ask how you could make a difference. It’s easy, start off small. If everyone does their bit, then we have the whole country doing bits and that will make a huge change. See our great tips on how to save electricity on page 35 and why recycling is so important on page 37.

So Zayn has decided to go solo with his career. There has been a lot for Directioners to absorb, first his announcement that he is leaving the band three days before the SA concert. Then he releases a demo to his first single just days after quitting the band! We can’t help but wonder if Zayn leaving 1D will dent his career. We just have to wait and see with eager anticipation.

We touch on the topic of peer pressure, it is prevalent in our schools and in social groups, but that does not mean that you are alone when you decide to stick to your morals and values. No one has the right to pressure you into doing anything you don’t want to.

See our stunning article on page 30 which includes some great tips should you find yourself in such a situation.

Life is all about choices, and we have the responsibility to ourselves to make the best choices we can. There is nothing as powerful and invigorating as doing

Ed's Note

Hi TZ. I just want to tell you that you guys rock. I love your magazines. I am a youth

from Zambia, who uses your magazine to encourage my youth group. You have touched and changed youths of Zambia. Keep up the good work. Marcel Bishop Hi Marcel, thank you for such a lovely letter. We are so excited about changing lives across the continent and will keep trying our best!

Hey TZ. I really love your mag and I would really love it if you could put something on Ian Somerhalder

or The Vampire Diaries in the next issue J Naeema Warasally KhanHi Naeema, I’m sure you are extremely pleased with this issue. Enjoy!

T o everyone’s disbelief on 25 March, just three days before they were to perform here in SA, it was announced to the world that Zayn

Malik had left One Direction. His official statement was: “My life with One

Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band.

“I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right.

I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”

Perrie Edwards, Zayn’s fiancé received the brunt of rage from the broken-hearted Directioners literally minutes after the news broke. They were ruthless with tweets like “Who wants to burn Yoko Ono? @PerrieEdwards”. Zayn defended Perrie against all the negative criticism taking full responsibility for his decision.

Merely six days after the announcement Zayn released a demo of his first single I Won’t Mind to kick-start his own solo career which has thrown Directioners into an emotional tug of war. Do ‘Zayners’ still like or do they now hate him for what he has done?

Did you know that the first person who leaves a band usually has the most success as a solo artist? Look at: Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, K.O, Robbie Williams and Da L.E.S as a few examples.

Where there is smoke, there is a fire... and Harry is in the centre of it too! It seems Harry has been telling his friends that he wants to get into acting and permanently move to LA. Since he’s been working independently with other artists, he is also pushing to go solo. There has been a noticeable change in the attitude between the guys in the band so speculation at the time of going to print, has been rife that Harry will be the next to leave. So we can’t help but wonder what’s next in store for the mega band One Direction?

WE TOOK TO OUR FACEBOOK PAGE TO GET YOUR RESPONSES AND ASKED IF YOU WOULD SUPPORT ZAYN’S SOLO CAREER. THIS IS SOME OF WHAT YOU HAD TO SAY:

Solo Zayn!

“I would but if that’s the reason why he left and not because he

wants to be a normal guy then I’ve lost respect for him for lying

to everyone. He can’t cope with fame in a band, how on earth will

he cope as a solo artist?” Vayda Pietersen

“I don’t think so. But all I know is he lied. He said he wanted to be out of the spotlight and live like a normal person but then he took to a solo career. I don’t hate him I’m just confused about his decision.” Mik GP

“Yes!!! Hate boy bands. With the solo career he can show his talent. He was the most talented one. And that great talent shouldn’t be in a boy band.”

Sone Grobbelaar

“I will support him no matter what. Yes he said that he wanted to be a normal 22-year-old but he went solo. He is still in my heart and I’m supporting him. All he needs is our support and no arguing.” Rosie Winter

Mostly Bs:Love definitely seems to be in the air. Time to take the next step and make sure you go out on a date. Make it something fun and active so you can both relax and get to see how you suit each other’s company without anyone else around.

Mostly Cs:This boat is not going to sail. You will have to admit to yourself you are wasting your time and he is not interested. Rather keep your eyes open because there may just be someone else into you who you are not noticing because you are not paying attention!

Hit OH NO under FunZoneOh No

One day at school I was walking around campus. It was exam time and we were having break. I was about to walk

up the steps, when I saw all the boys, including my crush, standing a couple of metres away. As I was going up the steps, I told myself "Don’t trip, don’t trip" and guess what? I tripped at the top step and all the boys saw me and burst out laughing! I got up and blood was running down my knees. My crush and his friends made fun of me for days! They couldn’t get over the fact that I tripped UP the stairs. Step-up sister

I had just finished choir practice (which went on a bit longer than I expected) and needed

to rush to get to hockey training, so I started running to the locker room to get my hockey stick and ball. I had just run through the doorway and saw my crush walking up the stairs looking at me and smiling, so I freaked out and started running even faster. What I did not know was that the floors had just been washed and were still wet ... Next minute I slipped and slid straight into the lockers making this really painful, ridiculously loud sound. I knew my crush was watching the whole thing go down and he just stared at me as if I was crazy … And then just walked away!!! He did not even help me. Well that

was such an embarrassing moment in my life and I just wanted to crawl right under the lockers and never come out! Locker loser

One day while I was walking in the mall, I saw my friend who I’d had an argument with the day before.

We weren’t speaking, so before she noticed me I pulled out my cellphone, and pretended to

talk on the phone. And just as she was about to walk up to me

my phone started ringing. She laughed and walked past me. It was so embarrassing. Busted! I was in a rush one morning

so I ran to school. When I got there my crush was smiling at me and I thought he was into me. As I entered the school he ran up to me and said my skirt is on backwards! I was so embarrassed I ran to the bathroom to fix it. Luckily nobody else saw that and my crush never said a word. Backward babe

HOW TO SURVIVE PEER PRESSURE

BY TRACY-LEIGH KINSEY

The next time you go to the movies, to school or to a party, take a quick look around you. What kind of people do you

see? What clothes are they wearing? What does their hair look like? What body language are they using? I bet you most of them will look pretty much the same – wearing the same fashions, doing their hair the same, even wearing the same colours. In fact, if you get close enough to hear what they’re saying, they’d probably use the same lingo and would even sound the same. These are your peers.

Peers are the group of people who you socialise with, learn from, have fun with and sometimes even fight with. This is also the group of people who you identify the most with because you’re all going through the same kind of stuff. You’re at the same stage in your lives and have so much in common. Chances are you spend more time with some of these people than with your own family.

RELYING ONLY ON OUR PEERS TO HELP US MAKE IMPORTANT DECISIONS IN OUR LIVES IS A VERY DANGEROUS THING TO DO. OFTEN TEENS TRY TO PRESSURE OTHERS INTO DOING CRAZY THINGS THAT HAVE REALLY BAD LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES

As you move into your teenage years, it’s perfectly normal to slowly detach yourself from your mom and dad and align more closely with your peers. This is a time when you’re discovering your own personality and realising you have a mind of your own. You now sometimes turn to your friends to give you the guidance and advice that you once got from your parents. And that’s all fine and dandy – as long as they are guiding you in the right direction. Friends’ advice and peer pressure can sometimes help us to navigate through life. Friends give us feedback and advice, they encourage us to try new experiences and push us to be more competitive. But, as in the following tale, their advice and guidance can sometimes have negative effects too.

INSECURITY AND PEER PRESSUREI once knew a very shy girl called Insecurity. Insecurity was very beautiful, but for some reason didn’t like herself very much. She was timid, embarrassed, had low self-esteem and just didn’t trust herself at all. One day one of her friends, Peer Pressure, came along and asked Insecurity to do something really crazy. Peer Pressure was loud and funny. She was popular and always had lots of friends around her. On this particular day, Peer Pressure asked Insecurity to steal two lipsticks from the cosmetics counter. She promised Insecurity that if she stole the lipsticks everybody would like her and she wouldn’t feel so bad about herself anymore. Although Insecurity knew that stealing the lipsticks was wrong, she decided to do it anyway. Unfortunately for her, she was caught in the act and was taken to the store manager’s office. On seeing what happened to Insecurity, Peer Pressure got

scared and ran away, leaving Insecurity to deal with the consequences all on her own. Once safely around the corner, Peer Pressure couldn’t help but laugh hysterically at poor Insecurity. “It was her own stupid fault for believing me in the first place!” Peer Pressure told her friends later.

WHY TEENS USE PEER PRESSURERelying only on our peers to help us make important decisions in our lives is a very dangerous thing to do. Often teens try to pressure others into doing crazy things that have really bad long-term consequences. Some reasons why they do this may be:L to feel the thrill of doing something

wrong and getting away with it.L to have a laugh at somebody

else’s expense.L to make themselves feel better about

their negative choices by getting others to make the same choices. As the saying goes: ‘Misery loves company.’

L to minimise their chances of getting into trouble by following the belief that there is safety in numbers. They believe the more people are doing it, the less trouble they’ll get into.

WHY TEENS GIVE IN TO PEER PRESSURELike Insecurity in the story above, we almost always know when we are doing something wrong, so why do we let our peers push us into making poor choices?

One of the most important things in a teen’s life is the need to belong. We need to feel accepted and sometimes will do almost anything to be cool and popular.

Teens love to have fun, take risks and get their adrenalin pumping. Just remember there are safe ways to do all of these things. ©

TRACY-LEIGH KINSEY OF STARCHILD COACHING IS A TEEN LIFE COACH AND SELF-ESTEEM ELEVATOR WHO CONDUCTS WORKSHOPS, TALKS AND ONE-ON-ONE COACHING FOR SCHOOLS, COMMUNITIES AND INDIVIDUALS

Instead of breaking into the abandoned house across the road, you can go for a ride on a rollercoaster or abseil down a mountain. There are safe alternatives.

Media such as the internet, TV, books and movies continuously send us messages telling us how cool it is to drink alcohol, smoke, take drugs and act violently. This desensitises us so that when we are faced with the choice to try these things, we think there’s nothing wrong with them.

HOW TO STAND UP TO PEER PRESSUREThink before you act! Before you make any decision, ask yourself: What can go wrong if I take this path? Weigh up the short-term gain (a bit of fun, a laugh or being cool for five minutes) against the long-term consequences (getting into trouble with your folks, putting your life in danger and getting into trouble with the law). Ask yourself if the five-minute high is really worth the pain in the long run.Avoid people and situations that you aren’t comfortable with. Surround yourself with friends who have the same values as you – friends who you know wouldn’t force you to do something that could hurt you or someone else in the long run. Also be a good friend and never pressure anybody into doing anything that makes them feel uncomfortable.Be prepared. Think about situations that you may be pressured into and prepare an excuse beforehand. For example: “No thanks. I can’t have a puff of that cigarette – I’ll have an asthma attack” or “I can’t go to the liquor store with you later as I have to buy my cousin a birthday present.” You can even practise saying your excuse in front of the mirror so that it sounds real.

Agree on an ‘escape’ phrase with your folks. For example: “Mom, please could you come and fetch me – I have terrible toothache.” Tell your folks that if you ever phone them using your escape phrase they should come and fetch you, no questions asked!Say no. Don’t be afraid to say no. You don’t even need an excuse. If you are brave enough, a simple ‘no’ is enough. Stand tall, put your shoulders back, make eye contact, be firm and say no. Then turn around and walk away. You will be setting a great example for others and will pave the way for them to say no too.

But now let’s see how the story between Insecurity and Peer Pressure ended. A week after Insecurity was caught stealing, Peer Pressure tried the same stunt on another friend – Confidence. Confidence was wise enough to think twice before she acted. She was comfortable with herself and really didn’t care what Peer Pressure and all of her popular friends thought about her.

Peer Pressure was so desperate for the two lipsticks that she stole them herself (along with some mascara and perfume), and was also caught and was arrested. Confidence then realised what Peer Pressure had done to Insecurity and went out of her way to make friends with her. Eventually Insecurity changed her name to Security and is now best friends with Confidence. Peer Pressure got into a huge amount of trouble and now mopes around looking miserable and feeling sorry for herself all day long. So what’s the moral of the story? Nothing stands up to negative peer pressure better than confidence, security and self-belief. Believe in yourself enough to be your own beautiful person! Be you-nique!

10 EASY AND EFFORTLESS TIPS FOR YOU TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE ENVIRONMENT

Make A Difference!

1 Switch off your TV instead of leaving it on standby mode because this

actually uses 50% of the energy a TV would use if switched on. Same goes for decoders, hi-fis, game consoles and computers.

5 “My tip is to learn how to dispose of your batteries because they

include chemical waste that’s bad for the environment,” says Cleo-Laine from Nelson Mandela Bay.

6 “Reduce air pollution by walking to places and sharing lifts with people.

It’s always the best vibe with more people, so you’ll find yourself making memories on the way to places,” advises Keri Seaman (17) from Cape Town.

8 “At my school we have a paper recycling competition every term.

The top three classes win civvies, pizzas and cool drinks. This is a really fun way to recycle and get involved in school activities,” says Carla (17) from Cape Town.

9 Shower instead of bath and use low-flow shower heads that reduce the

amount of water you use.

10 When you make a cup of coffee, just pour in enough water to

make a cup, rather than boiling a full kettle.

4 “If you are a teen who is really into being eco-friendly, you could talk

about it all the time and your friends or family would get really irritated and start recycling or conserving energy just to shut you up, and they will get used to it eventually. So you spread a message

3 “Use plastic and other used items to create some cool decorations for your room. You could

also use stuff such as CDs to make decorations!” suggests Janet (15) from Marble Hall.

7 “When you buy spray/deodorant make sure the back of the bottle has

a little globe on it (it’s more eco-friendly) and try to use deodorant that doesn’t contain aluminium because it can cause cancer!” says Pauline Chanel (16) from Oudtshoorn, Western Cape.

WE ALL HEAR THE WORD ‘RECYCLE’, BUT WHAT DOES THIS LITTLE WORD DO FOR THE WORLD?

WHAT IS BIODEGRADATION?

Biodegradation is the chemical dissolution (breakdown) of materials by

bacteria, fungi or other biological means. Biodegradable matter is generally organic material such as plant and animal matter

and other substances originating from living organisms, or artificial materials that are

similar enough to plant and animal matter to be put to use by the micro-organisms.

*Source: Wikipedia

BIODEGRADATION TIMELINEItem How long it takes to

biodegradeStyrofoam Up to one million years

Recycled paper can be used for cups instead Plastic bags 20-1,000 years

Plastic bottles 450 yearsPetroleum-based plastics like PET (polyethylene terephthalate)don’t degrade the same way organic material does. Bacteria turn up their noses at plasticDisposable nappies 450 yearsWood logs that are 30cm wide 10 yearsThe human body, buried in normal soil, un-embalmed 8-12 yearsTin cans 5 years

Cigarette butts 1-5 yearsWool sock 1-5 years

An animal such as a five-ton elephant to become a skeleton in nature with

scavengers, beetles and flies 7 days

WHAT IS RECYCLING?On a small scale recycling is using something old for another purpose. For example, using old, scratched CDs as coasters or decorations. Today more products are being manufactured with total or partially recycled content. Common household items that contain recycled materials include newspapers and paper towels; aluminium, plastic and glass soft drink containers; steel cans; and plastic laundry detergent bottles.Purchasing recycled products completes the recycling loop. By ‘buying recycled’, you play an important role in making the recycling process a success.

Separate items that can be recycled such as paper, cans and plastic bottles. Look around your community for the recycle bins and ask your mom to take you every two weeks to drop your items in the bin. Batteries have to be taken care of, not just thrown out with the rubbish. Keep a look out at stores such as Builders Warehouse for their recycle bins.

Recycle – it is a small way in which you can help our environment.

Some people have, and some people have not been

through the terrible experience of being pressured into doing something to ‘fit in’. You are not alone if you find yourself in this situation. Here is some advice on how to deal, from teens to teens!

On The Street Angelica Thomas

1. Have you ever experienced peer pressure and how did you deal with it?

2. How do you feel about environmental/health days, such as World No Tobacco Day on 31 May?

3. What is your attitude towards smoking?

4. If you could be a superhero whose task it was to save the environment, what would your superpower be?

Page 41: Teenzone May 2015

1. I haven’t dealt with peer pressure in a very serious matter, but I think sometimes your friends can pressure you into liking a certain boy. I have experienced this before. I just had to ask myself what I wanted and I explained to my friends who would try to convince me into liking a certain boy that it made me feel uncomfortable and it was something I didn’t want to bring up or talk about.2. I think they’re important, because everyone should be able to live a healthy life and enjoy it without worrying about environmental issues. 3. I personally don’t like the fact of people smoking. I’m not going to judge a person based on if they smoke or not, but I just feel like it’s not something people should be doing to look cool or to fit in. I also think it’s very harmful to your personal health. 4. It would probably be to stabilise the world’s hunger.

1. I’ve personally never experienced peer pressure, but I always advise people, friends especially, to only do what makes them happy, not the people around them.2. I appreciate such days because it shows that there are people who care and are willing to put an end to the harming of the environment.3. I come from a family of smokers and I really hate it. I fail to understand why people so deliberately harm not only the environment, but their own health as well.4. It would probably have a lot to do with changing people’s minds when it comes to pollution, and making them realise the negative and harmful effects that pollution has on the environment.

1. Yes, when you experience peer pressure you don’t see that you are being pressured because you just want to fit in. I realised when I wasn’t around that ‘certain girl’ I was freer and open and more myself, so I stopped spending so much time with her. 2. I support it 100%. When you have a day that is purely based on being eco-friendly, that’s awesome. Humans are damaging the world and we need to do something about it.3. I hate smoking and anything like that. Not only does it damage your organs, but it causes pollution. Another thing smokers don’t realise is smoking has a bad effect not only on them, but also on passive smokers. Second-hand smoking is actually killing people and is something to be taken seriously. 4. My superpower would be like a barrier and I’d stop things from damaging the environment and ozone. I’d take everything that was toxic and causing pollution and seal it in an air-tight, indestructible bubble and ship it off to Neverland.

1. I have experienced peer pressure, especially now in matric. There’s a lot of things you try for the first time, but how I deal with it is I step away from the situation and generally just ask, ‘Would my parents be proud of what I’m about to do?’ and that gets me through saying no most of the time.2. I think health/environmental days are amazing. I’m very passionate about the people around me and the environment and desperately want them to live as long as possible, so yeah, love it.3. Growing up in a house with smokers the key is to not fall into the trap of trying it and just carrying on, but I don’t really like smokers. There are so many elements of your body it affects. Why would you want to harm yourself like that?4. I’d definitely have a strong wind like the South Easter just coming out of my hands so that it would like blow the pollution out of the sea water.

1. Yes I did ... I just ignored it and did what I felt was right.2. I think they are fun and good if more people know about them ...3. I would never smoke, but I don’t mind people who smoke.4. I would be like the queen in the movie Epic and be able to repair plants and stuff at will.

1. Yes, I stayed calm and stuck to my morals and values.2. I feel it is for a good cause and can help many people in various ways. I support it as far as possible and encourage others to do so as well!3. I am strongly against it because I feel that smoking is a slow suicide attempt! I feel that smoking is a money eater and a claw waiting to trap you ... I would not recommend smoking to anyone! 4. I would like the power to suck up all the rubbish on Earth and create clean air for everyone ...

1. No. I never really experienced peer pressure.2. I think it is good that there are environmental/health days ... it can maybe open people’s eyes who have a health problem. It can also encourage one to pay more attention to the environment.3. Personally I hate smoking. It’s really bad for your health. Smoking destroys you from the inside.4. My superpower would be to pick up every paper or plastic bag or anything people throw on the streets ... our cities will look much cleaner. J

One day you are going to thank them for not making you have

too much hope

They were the ones to teach you how to cope

Cope, without running a blade on your skin

Show them the light you have been hiding within

Show them you can be better

And be brave and put your feelings down in letters

You can do so much with that pain

Put it in poetry! There’s so much to gain!

Think twice before that blade touches your arm

You have a better chance of showing your charm!

MEZONE

There was thunder and there was lightning

It was all very frightening!

What gave me the biggest scare of all was the

man in my window!

His face was vile and mean, he was tall and lean

His eyes were evil, his eyes were cruel

I should tell you that was not cool

I recognised this man

He’s the only one who fit the description

But it couldn’t be!Yes it was!

The one and only, most horrifying person,

the Joker!

Not the one on the cards in poker!

Or in the kings and queens’ courts!

NO!

He’s the one from the stories

The full package

His features, his physique! All very unique!

Not hard to tell

I let out a scream, loud and shrill!

Then in a flash of light, he was out of sight

Weird I tell you, but I swear it be true!

For I saw him with my own eyes

I would not tell lies about something

so terrifying and real!

SOPHIE VON RUBEN

THE MAN IN MY WINDOW!

WHAT ABOUT ...

What about we skip the plan

And go off to another land?

What about we hang around, enjoy the ride

Or even cheer up the ones who cried?

What about we live our lives without a care

Instead of asking where?

What about we have some fun

Before the day is done?

Let’s party until the fire dies

And forget the lies

Maybe we can dance?

Have friendships, forget about romance

What about we just sing?

And make ourselves bling-bling

Two best friends can do anything

As long as they’re together:

Make the troubles feel as light as a feather

JAMIE-LEE CALITZ

I wrote this letter thinking of you

And all that you have been to me

How our love was lovingly true

And all the times you stood up for me

I wrote this letter laughing at the times

When you made me laugh

How you would always say those lines

That would always make me blush

This is why I wrote this letter

To show my love to you

You’re one of the people who truly mattered

Thank you for being you

In the end of it all

I’ll write how much I will always love you

But most of all

I’ll write how much I appreciated you

I wrote this letter to thank you

For all that you have done

For all the times you told the truth

And for always being fun

I hope this letter makes you smile

And hopefully makes you cry

Because when we don’t see each other for a while

At least you have this letter to remember me by

I hope you had the best of days

When you were still with me

Love comes in different ways

And a few people can see

That love is just like an x-ray

You see when you are meant to be

I wrote this letter thinking of you

Please, PLEASE reply!

So I can know if you think of me too

Even though you said goodbye

Ian Joseph Somerhalder, aka Smolder-holder, is a gorgeous, generous, carefree American model and actor. Ian, his brother Robert and

sister Robyn were born to parents Edna and Robert Somerhalder, who divorced when Ian was 13.

Ian is most commonly known for his 2004 breakthrough role as Boone Carlyle in the TV drama Lost and for being cast as Damon Salvatore in the TV drama The Vampire Diaries. But these two are not Ian’s only acting endeavours. In 2010 he starred in the short-lived WB series Young Americans (a spin-off of Dawson’s Creek). Ian also played the bisexual character Paul Denton in Roger Avary’s adaptation of the famous novel Rules of Attraction.

At the age of 10 the very talented young Ian started modelling! He modelled for world-famous brands such as Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Versace and Guess. He never graduated because of his move to Europe to pursue his modelling career. For two consecutive autumn seasons Ian was the face of Guess. Though Ian was quite successful as a model, he does not like to talk about this part of his career, saying that he does not like the impression people may get of him being just another pretty face.Ian is extremely multi-talented. He has his own show, known as the Ian Show, he can write in cursive with his feet, is skilled in soccer and baseball and not only stars in The Vampire Diaries, but is now directing it too. How cool is that? One thing he can’t do, but wishes he could, is paint.Ian is a highly charitable person and he was part of the cleanup crew after the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling tragedy in April 2010. He helped out by cleaning the oiled animals and trying his best to show the public how they could help.

He loves being immersed in nature and wants to see the end of deforestation through sustainable solutions. Some other charitable acts include supporting the St. Tammany Humane Society, an organisation for animal shelter and welfare. His birthday project of 2010 to support the society turned out to be a big success. Ian was presented with $11,000 (that’s around R136,000 at the time of going to print) from the Vampire Diaries fandom. Together with a few of his Vampire Diaries co-stars, Ian also supports the It Gets Better project which focuses on preventing suicide among the LGBT youth. On his birthday in 2010 Ian co-founded the IS Foundation to empower and educate our youth. As you can see Ian is a huge animal lover and humanitarian. He even found his cat on the set of Lost and decided to keep her. During winter he tweets every night for people to give their animals blankets and shelter to keep them warm. Ian considers his pets to be his, his family’s and his friends’ – so he has more than he could count. Ian says if he wasn’t an actor he would be a marine biologist, writer or specialise in advertising. Ian tweeted, “Instead of gifts this year, my birthday wish is that we come together to raise funds to support projects that protect our habitat and nurture our furry friends.” So let’s follow his example and try to do our bit for the environment! shopping centre and it was really sweet. He was a total gentleman to me and then at the end of the night he kissed me. But the problem is that he's 19 (I'm 16) and he is not the type of guy my parents would approve of. So should I get to know him better and then speak to my parents or what should I do? Parental approval problem

A If you are 16 you're in school and if this guy is 19 he is out of school already?

This is the problem: a 19-year-old guy will want a relationship you cannot offer him at this stage. He sounds sweet and if you are saying he is a gentleman then he won’t mind when you tell him it’s not the right time for this. Until you are 18 your parents have every right to weigh in on what choices you make. If he is the one then it will happen when it’s the right time. No harm in being friends.

“... HE STARTED TO BE REALLY SARCASTIC WITH ME SAYING I'M A PLAYER.”

Q So I have this guy best friend and we are really close. He fell in love with

me and when he found out I have a crush on this really cute guy who likes me too, but unfortunately has a girlfriend, he started to be really sarcastic with me saying I'm a player. I don't get the fact that he says I'm a player because I don't have any other crush except for the cutie. I really don't want to lose my best

friend. What should I do? Best friend blues

A Sounds like a case of sour grapes from your guy friend because he wants

you to like him ... What worries me is that you like someone who is not available to be liked. Dangerous thing to do. I’m wondering if you can put yourself in the shoes of his girlfriend. How would you feel? I think you and your best friend need to have a good long chat about what is okay to comment on and not, and also what the definition of a player is.

Male Point Of View“... I AM STARTING TO FEEL GUILTY BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT HE HAS A GIRLFRIEND.”

Q I really like this one guy and he likes me too. The only problem is that he has

“... UNTIL WE REALISE WE'RE JUST NOT MEANT TO BE?”

Q I've been dating this guy for seven months now and our relationship has

been anything but smooth. He's 22 and I'm 17 ... We hardly see each other since he's always out on gigs (he's a musician) and I'm always away with my family. We're drifting apart! Every time (not once) I try to fix things, I lie and make false promises to secure our relationship and that's what makes things worse. We're always going back and forth apologising to each other, but for how long are we going to keep doing this until we realise we're just not meant to be? We owe it to each other to let go, but it hurts so much because I love him. A part of me wants to stay and fight for us and the other feels he deserves better. Love struggle

A Letting go of the comfort zone is painful. Some things for you to

consider are: When a door is open (that is you’re in a relationship), it’s very hard for another door to open (that is attract or create a space for a new person). When you’re focusing on the drama (going back and forth, apologising) of a situation it takes away from the positive in your life. Is it worth it?

“... HE IS NOT THE TYPE OF GUY MY PARENTS WOULD APPROVE OF.”

Q I have been chatting to this guy over BBM for a while. We met up at the

a girlfriend and he keeps saying that they will break up as soon as he sees her. She lives in another city and I am still waiting for them to break up. Meanwhile this guy and I are making out, but I am starting to feel guilty because of the fact that he has a girlfriend. Please help me. I don't know what to do! Manic mistress

A Well this can be a pretty confusing situation to find yourself in, because

you're having fun, yet what you're doing may be seen as morally wrong at the same time. You need to consider the fact that you're not his girlfriend at this very moment, and that he has chosen not to break up with his girlfriend until he sees her. Surely if he felt that strongly for you, he would take the necessary precautions to end things with his girlfriend? Essentially he could be

playing the both of you, which is not a good thing at all. I really do feel that you need to maintain some boundaries and recognise your self-worth here. A guy should make you his everything, and not treat you as the next best thing.

So I would suggest you have a conversation with him about where this is essentially going and that if he is serious about you and him, he needs to act now. After all, why should he have all the control over this? You need to stand your ground here. As much as there is a mutual attraction between the two of you, it is essential to make sure that despite the attraction, your hearts are in sync too ... Because the last thing you would want to find out is that he was just seeing you for the time being while his girlfriend was away. So I urge you to take this step, and safeguard yourself by chatting with him to avoid any future heartache that you may encounter.
