ome of you are already on summer holidays, while others are preparing for end of term exams and are looking forward toward the break. Summer employ-

ment is a big part of the holiday, because it gives you an oppor-tunity to make your own money, so you won’t need to rely on your parents to provide every little thing you need. In addition, summer jobs also provide invaluable experience and opportu-nities that sometimes cannot be gained anywhere else.

Work experience. If you’ve ever applied for a job or looked through the classifieds, you will notice the years of work expe-rience being requested. If you’ve never worked a day in your life, then you won’t be able to compete with your peers who have. Use the summer to get some knowledge in your chosen field.

Networking. Summer jobs provide a foot in the door of what-ever area you’re interested in. It opens doors that you might not have even known existed. Working in a media house, for example, might allow you to meet artistes, marketing manag-ers, presidents, etc. Depending on what you want to do, you can form networks that you can tap into at a later date.

People skills. You never realise how di!cult it is to work with others until you are forced to depend on them to deliver your

part of a work assignment. Often times, your boss won’t care that you don’t like Jane or Jack. What he/she wants to know is that you meet your deadlines. Jobs teach you how to work with di"erent types of personalities and how to adjust your own personality to get the job done.

Initiative. If you are motivated and determined, one of the main things you will gain from summer employment is the abil-ity to take initiative. Employers like to know that you are able to think independently and come up with strategies that will improve the company. Corporate executives are often so busy that they don’t always have the time to be following up on as-signments or even giving them. Someone who can successfully pitch an idea or start a project might become indispensable to a company.

Don’t just see your summer job as an opportunity to make money. You are making an investment in your future and it is important that you commit to learning and developing.

Have an inspiring day,Keresa

ey guys! Summer school continues and so far, thankfully, I have no complaints – except of course for this unbearable

heat that we’ve been having! I feel like I’m going to melt and I’m certainly not happy, but on the bright side, at least summer only lasts for a short time.

Anyway, as I continue to enjoy the summer, I went to go see the movie I have been dying to see since January, Snow White & The Huntsman. As of last year, screenwriters have decided to put a spin on the classic fairytale, beginning with the hit comedy, Mirror Mirror, in late March and now with action-adventure of Snow White & The Huntsman, a more gothic spin on the tale. The movie tells the story

of what happens when the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) who, sent to kill Snow White (Kristen Stewart), ends up becoming her protec-tor and ally in her quest to vanish the evil queen, Ravenna (Charlize Theron).

Now, I cannot even begin to explain how greatly disappointed I am in this film. There were so many flaws in the storyline. When I first saw the trailer for this film, I couldn’t wait for it to come out and with all the hype this movie was creating, I really thought it was going to be epic, only for me to leave the theater greatly disappointed and completely un-entertained.

advertisment

First o", there were scenes that were advertised in the trailers that weren’t even in the movie. There was one where Ravenna is screaming as a mirror shatters in slow motion around her, a great example of excellent CGI and directorship, but much to my dismay, this never made it into the movie and it was one of the scenes I was especially looking forward to.

Secondly, Kristen Stewart as Snow White? I don’t think that Kristen is ugly, but the fairest of them all? As if ! However, I am not too biased to say that she did a terrible job of playing Snow White, as this was a darker twist to the story. She did bring a certain tomboy quality to this version, regardless of her looks. I mean, if they had made her look like she did in Twilight as vampire (minus the red eyes, of course), I might have bought it, but as of right now, I don’t buy that she’s prettiest girl in that whole story. That’s just ridiculous!

Lastly and probably most importantly, the flow of the storyline was o". I under-stand that in every movie, a series of events have to take place for others to fall into the place, but it is too much to ask for screenwriters to be sensible? Maybe it’s because I happen to be very analytical when it comes to the movies I am greatly interested in, but there are seriously some events in this movie that truly go against any common sense. If I am ever to watch this movie again, it will be when it comes out on cable and I can save my money.

Snow White & The Huntsman is an action-adventure from Universal Pictures and director Rupert Sanders, earning itself three out of five stars. Starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Sam Clafin, Sam Spruell, Ian Mc-Shane, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Edie Marsan, Toby Jones, Johnny Harris, Brian Gleeson and Vincent Regan.

wenty-one-year-old Nicholas Anglin recently gradu-ated from the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, and has a lot of accomplishments

under his belt. The most recent addition to his juggling list is his final year project, StruckXGold. The brand empowers youth culture with its BE:YOU campaign and also promotes young tal-ents from art and music through its SXG TV.

TS: When did you first discover your creative talents?NA: Growing up, I would always doodle on anything I could find – scraps of paper, walls, magazines, any surface that would allow me to express the thoughts I had. I still do this process with scraps of paper. I guess you could call it like an obsession.

TS: Tell us about some of your work.NA: My work is usually a reflection of popular culture, from the music I listen to and try to make at times, to the food I eat, the things people say and books.

TS: Who are your influences? Is there any-one you look up to when it comes to de-signing?

NA: When it comes to designing, I tend to gravitate towards artists such as Andy Warhol,  Jean Michel Basquiat, Takashi Mu-rakami, Kaws and Milton Glaser, and I tend to become fans of my peers, if they are doing something new and unusual or pro-ducing quality work.

TS: You’ve just graduated from Edna Man-ley College. What is your next step?NA: The next step is definitely to get a job and work on my brand, StruckXGold.

TS: What are your short-term and long-term goals and how do you expect to achieve them?NA: My short-term goals are, firstly, to keep improving my style and the quality of work I provide. For my long term goals, I would really love to travel the world, working for and doing collaborations with companies such as The Hundreds, Stussy, Nike, Adidas and Vans and some local brands as well, helping to bring back some production value to Jamaica’s garment industry.

TS: How do you want other people to re-spond to your art? NA: I want people to relate to my work. I want them to be able to see and feel all the influences of the work and relate it to themselves. I want my work to be a lifestyle.

TS: Describe your style. NA: My style is mostly a mixture of pop art and illustrations, with a fusion of music and life.

TS: Describe your ideal working atmo-sphere.NA: My ideal working atmosphere, I would say, is in the wee hours of the morning, right before the sun rises, in some AC and a really comfy chair with some food by my side.

TS: How do you get inspired creatively with a new assignment? NA: I’m surrounded by inspiration. The name of the project could inspire me, the client could inspire me, the function of the project or even just walking/driving inspires me. It’s just taking all these inspirations to make them work in a design.

TS: What motivates/inspires your work?NA: I’m usually motivated by my friends who encourage my work and random people who will re-blog or send me mes-sages. Sometimes it’s from seeing food, music, technology and fashion.

TS: How do you know when you have achieved success? NA: To me success, is like levels in a video game: you must go through levels of di!culty for it to be appreciated and when it is appreciated, it is called success.

TS: How do you measure your level of suc-cess/achievement?NA: I think I have accomplished a lot for a young man my age, but I have not fulfilled my dreams or desires, so until then, I won’t be measuring but only appreciating my achievements.

“I’m surrounded by inspi-ration. The name of the project could inspire me, the client could inspire me, the function of the project or even just walking/driving in-spires me.”

T he manufacturers of Nokia’s new smart-phone, the Lumia 900, are boasting that this

is the ultimate device on the market today. I’m sure you’ve seen the AT&T commercials, which claim that all previous smartphones were just test phones and the new Lumia 900 is the end product.

The Lumia 900 is powered by the Microsoft Windows Phone 7.5 Mango OS. It has 4G GSM, HSDPA, Wi-Fi and LTE capabilities, a 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Scor-pion CPU, a substantially bigger capacity BP-6EW 1830mAh Li-ion battery, along with a rear eight Mega-pixel camera with 3264x2448 pixels, dual-LED flash, autofocus Carl Zeiss optics and 720p video capture and a less powerful 1 Megapixel, 1280x720 pixels front-facing camera. The Nokia Lumia 900 looks big and bold, feels solid and sturdy in your hands and is 11.5mm thick.

The biggest talking point is its 4.3” display, with a ClearBlack AMOLED 800×480 capacity multitouch touchscreen. The premise of Nokia’s ClearBlack screen technology is that it makes the dark tones ap-pear really deep and rich, allowing the other colours to stand out more. It provides good contrast, even in the super bright sunlight. Sadly, the Lumia 900’s screen is by no means crystal clear. Though photos and images look bright and colourful, they aren’t the best quality.

PROS:

screen is a definite win.

responsive, even to light taps and movements across the screen.

-sign, with the ability to take quite a good deal of abuse because of its Polycarbonate unibody and Gorilla Glass covered display.

-er plus, great for video calling.

good for storing all your media files and other documents.

CONS:

much a step up from its predeces-sor, the 800.

little better.

Windows Phone software is way behind those accessible to Android

and the iOS platforms.

fact that this phone has no microSD card slot, even though it has 16GB of internal memory.

RAM is rather disappointing.

of this phone is the fact that it only supports micro-SIM cards.

This is definitely a wonderful phone, but I can’t say that I would prefer this to an iPhone 4. Nokia and Microsoft have made a decent attempt at trying to outdo their competitors, but I think they could have done a lot better. Though it has the most beautiful screen of any of the smart phones on the market today, the display is nothing to write home about. I don’t think that this is the best smartphone out right now. You’d be better o" just getting an iPhone or a good An-droid smartphone.

Nokia LuMia 900 Review

PRoS&CoNS

rom the dawn of man, understanding how a wom-an’s mind works has been one of those things that has ba%ed and confounded her male counterpart.

Looking back on some of mankind’s better accomplishments, such as walking on the moon and discovering nuclear power, understanding the female psyche is something that ba%es even scholars to this day. Many have tried and many have failed, ow-ing to the impossible task required.

Females tend to be attached to their emotions, expressing them in very overt or covert ways. A lot of us as gentlemen walk around saying things and creating a façade of bravado, which works out to be just that. However, once in a working relation-ship, we realise the real ‘hot head’ is the woman: she is unas-suming, quiet and will let you have enough rope as you might need to hang yourself. But cross lines or push buttons and pre-pare for a war you will lose.

Women are at their most dangerous when they are silent, when they are thinking. She’s either thinking that your friend suddenly looks appealing, that you are an idiot or, worst case, how to make it look like an accident. Putting it in perspective, it would be like the 300 Spartans versus the Persian Army – lots of flex-ing and fighting, but they still lost. Guess which side you’ll be on?

Something else that ba%es me about females is their incessant need to shop. And mark you, I can understand the urge for new stu", but sometimes it margins on idiocy. Why buy shoes that you can’t walk in, or a purse that can only hold a pen? Shopping females can be likened to lionesses stalking a gazelle and the last thing you want to do is get in their way.

What bothers me is when I’m asked for my opinion, I’m ex-pected to lie through my teeth. If you have to ask, then yes, that dress doesn’t have enough material to cover your… girth. But then, strangely, if you lie about anything else, you are the worst person in life. I also wonder why it takes four hours to get ready. Utility and practicality are substituted for style and “ooh, that’s cute!” Having a puppy the size of a teacup serves no purpose, as opposed to a much larger dog that can actually act as a de-cent guardian. Females and their likes… the world may never understand.

As guys, we will always be on the outside looking in when it comes to our girls. They do things that ba%e our brains, leave us in awe and utterly confuse us. But guess what? We love them and that’s all that maters. We’ll just leave them to their own devices.

summer tips

ummer has o!cially started and we couldn’t be happier as we all look forward to hitting the beach-es, going to parties, possibly going overseas and

generally just having a good time. Unfortunately, some of us have summer school. But don’t cry just yet; Teen Spirit has some tips that will help you to not only do well in summer school, but have a great time doing it. It’s time for summer school and summer fun!

BETWEEN CLASSESSummer school doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun be-tween classes. The one beauty of summer school is that you don’t have classes back to back. You might even have more than two hours between classes and these hours can easily be utilised to have some fun.

Obviously, you have to eat, so why not take your lunchtime to sit and converse with friends? You can have lunch on cam-pus or go to a place nearby, as long you have enough time to get back to school for your next class.

When you’re not eating you can probably head down to your school’s gym and play some ball or visit the pool and cool o" for a bit before heading to your next class.

AFTER SCHOOLLet’s face it: in the summer, parties take place every day and any day of the week. Sadly, that also includes days when you have school and you hardly want to miss out.

First o", if you have, start your projects immediately, as soon as summer school begins and do a little each day. That way, the work doesn’t pile up on you.

Secondly, finish all assignments, especially those due the very next day. That way, they are in your bag, ready for tomorrow and you’re free to party the rest of the night through and have good time. When you get home, you can go straight to bed instead of struggling to finish your homework.

WEEKENDSLuckily, the weekends are how they have always been: two whole days of no school and rest and relaxation. By ensur-ing that your schoolwork is done within the week, including homework due Monday morning, your weekends are open to sleep until noon, hit the beach, party and just let loose and have fun.

KEEPING FOCUSEDNow since its summer, you’re allowed to enjoy yourself and have fun, but never forget the real reason you’re at summer school in the first place. Although having a great summer is certainly a priority, you have to focus on the task at hand, and that is to do well in summer school, so you don’t find yourself there next year.

Have a great summer. That’s my hope for all of you, but remember to keep your eye on the prize: that big, bright A+.
