Tournament Information: AWGA Opening Day- Thursday, March 7th The Arrowhead Women’s Golf Association Opening Day will be held on Thursday, March 7th. There will be a general meeting and breakfast beginning at 8:30 am at Legend’s Bar and Grill. Golf to follow: 10:00 am Shotgun start. The game will be a 4-Lady Scramble with teams assigned by Committee. If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so as soon as possible. The sign-up sheet is in the Golf Shop. Men’s Club Opening Day- Saturday, March 9th The Men’s Club will open with the first event of the season on Saturday, March 9th. Plan now to pick your partner* for this year’s kick-off! (Maximum of 10-stroke differential between partners.) The format is two-man best ball; gross and net by handicap division. Tees: Blue (or white tee option for qualifying participants). Entry fee is $30.00 per team. Make your own team and tee time. Arrowhead Men’s Club Match Play Championship The Men’s Club Match Play Championship will begin March 11th. This is single-elimination (net) match play event. The field will be broken into flights of eight players based on handicap index. Players will have two weeks to play each round’s match: Round 1 (March 11 – March 24), Round 2 (March 25 – April 7), Round 3 (April 8 – April 21). Entry fee is $20.00. Entry forms are available in the Golf Shop or online.

“Spring Opener” Shamble- Saturday, March 23rd The 4th Annual Men's "Spring Opener" will be held on Saturday, March 23rd. It is a four-man team game; playing a four-man Shamble using Stableford Points scoring. Eligibility- Arrowhead Men's Club members, age 18 and over, with a USGA handicap are eligible. Players will play the "Blue Tees", unless your age + handicap = 87 or more, you can play the “White Tees". Individual entry with assigned by Committee; shotgun start at 9:00 am. Entry fee is $25.00. Food and beverage vouchers provided by the Men’s Club. Entry forms are available in the Golf Shop or online. Masters Par-3 and Masters Championship- April 12th & 13th The Arrowhead Men's Masters Par-3 Tournament and dinner will be held on Friday, April 12th at 4:00 pm with a 9-hole shotgun start. No-host "attitude adjustment" time starts immediately after golf with dinner and awards to follow. Entry fee of $35.00 includes prize fund and dinner. All Men’ Club members are welcome to participate in the Par-3 Tournament.

The 19th Annual Arrowhead Men's Masters Championship will be held on Saturday, April 13th for qualified players. (List of qualified players is on the bulletin board.) The entry fee for this event is $20.00. All players will be paired in divisions by the Masters Committee. The three divisions will be: Open (Age 18-49) and Senior (Age 50-69): Blue Tees;

Super Senior (Age 70 & over): White Tees

Other News from the Golf Shop: OGA / GHIN Handicapping Just a reminder that the official OGA Handicapping Season has begun. Make sure to post all your scores in the GHIN computer or GHIN App! Please note: you can post both 9 and 18 Hole scores when attested by another player. Also, if you haven’t signed up for a GHIN handicap yet, you can do so in the Golf Shop at this time.

**Payment of Men’s or Ladies’ Club dues must be current in order to participate in the respective Club’s activities. Saturday Morning Play Policies- Friendly Reminder Saturday morning is a very popular time to play golf, therefore has different policies regarding tee time booking and composition. Here is the current Saturday play policy:

• Tee times may be made starting Monday morning at 6:30 am.

• Limit of one (1) guest per member before 12:00 pm.

• All players must be age 18 or older before 12:00 pm.

• Groups must consist of only men or only women before 10:00 am. (After 10:00 am men & women may play in the same group).

As AWGA Opening Day approaches, many minds and hearts have been at work preparing for our 2019 season. Chris, our Golf Chair has the 2019 golf schedule planned. Jackie has been inventorying, cleaning and organizing our cupboards. Our 2019 budget is well managed by Sandra, while Jennie has been carefully tracking minutes of our board meetings. Linda, our OGA representative, and Laurie and Patti, our OWGA Directors, are representing AWGA in organizations outside our league. Alexis is keeping us all connected within our league, and Phyllis is heading a team of AWGA members updating our Bylaws. It is certain that Chris, Carla, Alexis, Julie, and Holli (our tournament chairs) as well as our December Holiday Party chair, Kaye, are creatively planning these events as well.

Ladies … It is time for us to gather and go play! We are looking forward to seeing you all on the greens!

President’s Corner with Jerry Calvin

Welcome to March and the official start of the new posting season. It is hard to believe that we are starting to post our scores, when it was just snowing at the beginning of the week. Also, with the beginning of March, is the start of the 2019 Men’s Club Board. This year’s board consists of: Dallas Forbes – Vice President, Bill Poletiek – Treasure, Bobby Stemmer – Secretary, Board Directors: Jeff Eden, Joe Templeton, Mike Raub, Brad Bigelow, and Justin Fisher.

One of our responsibilities is to provide you with a great golfing experience at Arrowhead. If you have any ideas, questions, or concerns, please reach out to any of us or attend any of our Men’s Club Meetings. Our next meeting will be April 6, 2019 at 7:00 a.m. at Arrowhead.

We have had a few events in February, with the Double Alternate Shot and the Bingo-Bango-Bongo. The usual suspects are on the winner’s list: Denny Taylor and Pat O‘Donnell took First Gross in both events, but keep an eye on Dave Parker, Mark Rose, Daryl Retzlaff, Scott Sword, Fred Lewis and Scott Shorter as they also cashed in both events. Congrats to all the winners.

This month we have the Two-Man Best Ball on March 9th and the Spring Opener on March 23rd. Don’t miss out on the Match Play Championships, which begins March 11th. Please sign up in the Golf Shop for all the fun events.

At the annual meeting I mentioned the OGA Net Championship in September. All Men’s Club members have the opportunity to represent us at the event. The events to determine the list of qualifiers are: The Masters, US Open, Black Tee Game in July, and the Club Championship. Details for this will be posted on the bulletin board at Arrowhead. This is a net tournament and qualifiers will be determined by net rankings.

Adam and his crew continue to do a great job in keeping the course in playable conditions, despite the adverse weather. There will also be a few projects on the course coming this year, which I am excited to see happen! Please make sure to do your part and replace your divots, use sand and seed, and take the time to rake the bunkers. Please remember to leave the course in better shape than you found it. It sure seems like we are finally getting our dose of winter weather, but fortunately we have had some good days mixed in to get out and enjoy the course. I just wanted to remind everyone who purchased the Winter Lesson series that they must be used by the end of March. Even if the weather is not ideal outside, we will always have options inside or under cover to get our lessons in. We will be having an indoor Callaway Fitting Day with Dave Smith, Callaway Tech Rep, on March 9th. There will be a sign up sheet at the counter. The fittings will go from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm by appointment, so please make sure to sign up if interested. If you have any questions, contact the Golf Shop or email me at [email protected]. Welcome to the Arrowhead Family!

This February has been the third coldest February on record, and it sure has felt that way! Multiple frost delays and snow covered days causing course closures. But, it’s looking like we are just about done with the below freezing mornings. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the warmer weather to start moving in.

We've got the Verti-Quake machine out on a few fairways over the last month, and it’s going well. We have completed 15-17 fairways. We plan to continue this process on holes 13 and 14, then working on others as needed. The Verti-Quake process vastly improves drainage and root development allowing for an uptake of moisture and nutrients. It also helps with decompaction of the soil via off-set blades. Their rotary motion, combined with the forward speed, sets up a wave action. Thus, the soil is shattered laterally, and decompacted consistently from the surface to full working depth without surface damage.

The bunker project has been approved, and we are currently working out the details of the project. The plan is to have this completed from start to finish in 6-8 weeks. We are hoping to get this started mid-August, which I believe is the best time for this type of work to be done, as there will be heavy equipment that needs to move across the turf. Less damage will occur because the ground will be firm. A basic rundown of the project is removing all old sand, exposing all drains and making any necessary repairs, minor shaping of insides of bunkers where needed, and adding fresh sand throughout. I will inform the membership when a start date is confirmed.

All penalty areas are currently being converted to red stakes. So, there will no longer be any yellow-staked “hazard” markings. All OB markings will remain the same.
