Easysetup. Greatnetworkingperformance.

_.II~J.'1ICould havebenefited more if

a USBport isincluded.

B'J::I:II][IIJ.It may be on theexpensiveside,but the EdimaxBR-6675nD

definitely offers asuperbwired/wireless solution

for your network.

The Edimax BR-6675nD isan iQ router that providessimultaneous dual band 2.4

GHz and 5 GHz wireless network

connectivity. This router allows users

to use general network applicationslike web surfing via the 2.4 GHzbandwidth and stream HD video

and other media through the 5GHz bandwidth at the same time.

Additionally, the BR-6675nDfeatures a single Gigabit WAN port

and 4 Gigabit LAN ports, that offersusers the need for maximum network

performance data rates of up to1000 Mbps. With Gigabit Ethernet

connectivity, the BR-6675nD can

provide users a fast and smoothmedia streaming or network gaming

experience. It works especially wellwhen you want to stream HighDefinition content without any

problems. The iQoS is Edimax's answer to the

need for a quicker, easier, and more

effective way to manage Internetbandwidth. Edimax mentions thatmost routers on the market feature

QoS (Quality of Service) functionality,

but the problem with this feature

is that only advanced users knowhow to set it up. That is why Edimax

redesigned this feature to make it

user-friendly. The simple and intuitiveuser interface allows users to arrange

bandwidth priority settings in just afew clicks.

The Edimax BR-6675nD features

a high-speed solution that complieswith IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n standards.

The latest wireless technology is builtinto this router to broaden its wireless

coverage by six times and to reduce

dead spots within the wireless range.

Theoretically, when it is connected towireless 802.11 n compatible devices, this router can achieve transmission

rates of up to 450 Mbps. The EdimaxBR-6675nD can also allow users to

build secure connections with WPS

enabled wireless devices simply by

pressing the WPS button. There isalso a built-in WLAN switch. With the

built-in WLAN on/off switch, users can

also easily switch on/off the wirelessconnection without logging into theuser interface. This switch provides

users an easy way to save electricity by

switching the Wi-Fi signal off when itis not in use. It could have been great

of the router had a built-in USB port,

just to expand its capabilities more.In terms of setting up the router,

there wasn't any problem configuringthe device for usage. Once setup, the

speeds provided were significantlyfaster in terms of file transfers and

other connections. Transferring a 1.3GB file from one notebook to another

took less than two minutes. This was

going on while a video file is currently

streaming. It may be on the expensiveside, but the Edimax BR-6675nD

definitely offers a superb wired/

Wireless networking might not sound so sexy and cool, but awireless router is

essential forconnectingwireless devices throughout your home orofhce and for

sharing Internet and other network resources, such as multimedia content, on yournetwork. Our checklist helps you pick the best routerforyour needs.

Wireless routers are the starring

players in a home or small

business network, yet theyoften cause great frustration

for home users, business users, and anyonewho is not a wireless networking guru.Don't worry: we can help. There is one

main reason why a wireless router can be

a confusing piece of hardware: wireless

signals. Wireless signals are subject to

interference from many things, from other

nearby routers to the configuration of yourhome or office.

The enigma of wireless networking isn't

helped by router makers who, in a frenzyto differentiate and sell their products, toutunrealistic bandwidth speeds, load on extrabells and whistles, and sometimes create

products that are difficult for the averageuser to set up, manage, and optimize.

Sifting through all of the brandingnoise and choosing which router is best

suited for your purposes can be a daunting

task. Do you need a lesser expensive single

band router or a more expensive dualband? Do you need to upgrade or purchasean 802.11 n router? What benefits does

802.11 n give? Does a higher-end router

mean better Internet connectivity? Whatabout IPv6-is it best to get a router that

supportsIPv6?Thesequestions as well as factors like

security, parental controls and extra featuressuchas the ability to connect USB printersand external storage drives to a router forsharing in your personal network, are allconsiderations to weigh when decidingto purchase or upgrade a router. On topof the problem of just selecting a router isthe complexity of Wi-Fi technology itself.Wi-Fi is a tricky beast and subject to somany varying factors and environmentalfluctuations.

If there are many other wireless routersin your proximity, you face potentialsignalinterference, especially on the morecrowded 2.4 GHz band, a frequency thatwirelessrouters use to transmit and receive

data. Certain building materials, multilevelhomes, glass partitions and householddevices that operate on the 2.4 GHzfrequencylike microwaves, baby monitors, and cordless phones can all degradewirelessperformance.

Businesses often spend thousandsof dollars to hire wireless networkingprofessionals to perform site surveysto determine the best equipment andmeans to deploy a wireless network. Itis small wonder that home and small

businessusers who may not have theseprofessionals at their disposal can feelfrustrated about purchasing, setting upandmaintaining a wireless router and theirown wireless networks! To assuage someof that frustration, we've compiled a list ofquestions to help you determine the bestrouterfor you.

DoYou Need A Wi-Fi Router?A router directs network traffic-broken

down into small pieces of data calledpackets. With home routers, this is trafficthat flows between the Internet connection

your ISPprovides and your internal, homeorsmallbusinessnetwork. A wireless routerallowswireless devices (and wired devices)to connect to that Internet connection and

to communicate with other deviceson yourhome network.

Somepeople only work from one laptopor PCthat may be directly connected totheir cable or OSLmodems. They may nothaveother usersor devicesin their home or

office that also need Internet connectivityor sharing printers and files. If this appliesto you and you have no need to deviatefrom a fixed location from which you doyour Internet surfing or computing, thenyoucan don't need a wireless router.

However, with enticing gadgets likeiPads, with gaming consoles, and in multi-

user households and offices, most peoplethese days want and can benefit from awirelessrouter. With aWi-Fi router browsingthe Internet from an upstairs bedroom, giving Internet accessto a game console orseHop box like a Roku, or sharing picturesand streaming music and video to all of thedevices in a home or office is possible. Ifyou want the capability to do these tasks, then yes, you need a router.

Single Band or Dual Band?

While researchingrouters, you will inevitablystumble across the term "bands." The 2.4

and 5 GHz bands are the frequencies inwhich wireless communications operate.802.11 Band G devices use the 2.4 GHzband, while 802.11 N can use either the2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band. A single-band,2.4-GHz router is geared toward simplewireless networks. On the other hand, adual-band router supports both 2.4 and 5GHz frequencies.

The 5 GHz band is less crowded then

the 2.4 GHz band; less equipment runson 5 GHz. That's why it's better equippedfor throughput-intensive work within yourhome network such as gaming and filestreaming. You will also get better internalnetwork performance. The one downsideof 5 GHz is that it does not sustain signalat greater distances as well as the 2.4 GHzband. So, if you are looking for a dualband router to take advantage of the 5GHz bandwidth-you'll want to factor indistance when placing the router in yourhome or office. One other thing to considerwhen it comes to Wi-Fi bands? Some of

your devices may only work with a givenband.

300 Mbps. 450 Mbps. 900 Mbps ...AIIThose Numbers!

When router shopping you will noticethree digit numbers emblazoned on mostrouters' packaging, indicating the speed ofthe router. A few yearsago, 300 Mbps wasthe standard speed of most Wi-Fi routers. That meant that testing under the bestcircumstances, which means in what wecall a "clean room" with no interference, the router can achieve up to 300 Mbpsspeeds. Currently, 450 Mbps or even 900Mbps routers are being marketed. 900Mbps is a touted speed of the latest dualband routers on the market, which cantransmit a potential 450 Mbps on both the2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. 450 + 450 =900. Get it?

You however, will never see thosespeeds. Issuessuch as channel overlap andinterference means a router in a typical

home or office environment will never reach

these theoretical speedstouted by vendors. When testing at PC Magazine, which hasa real-world testing environment, if wesee speeds close to half of what a vendorsaysa router is capable of, that's excellentbandwidth!

Of course, fast router speeds don'thave anything to do with how fast yourInternet connection is. A 300 Mbps routerwon't make your Internet connection anyfaster than a 900 Mbps router. That speedis set by your ISP.What a faster speedrouter helps with is the performance ofyour internal network: streaming musicand video, sharing files and so on.

Do I Need 802.11 N?

802.11 n is becoming the standard inwireless networking. If you are purchasinga new router, be it single or dual band-gowith an 802.11 n router. And not 802.11 ndraft, which is an older standard. 802.11 nrouters can run in "Mixed mode" so thatnon-802.11 n wireless devices can connectas well.

What Type of Security? Most of the newer routers support thehighest level of security, WPA2. If in themarket for a new router, make sure itsupports WPA2. If you have children youmay want to consider a router with parentalcontrols.

What's My Comfort Level with Router

Setup and Management?Ironically, we find that the latest moreexpensive routers have the easiestsetup. Ifyou are more of a guru, and on a tighterbudget, you can get away with cheaperrouters that do not offer automated

setup. Becausethese routers do not haveas sophisticated software for deployingas more expensive routers, a little morenetworking know-how is required to setupand manage them.

Other Considerations

If you are looking for a router that youdon't want to upgrade anytime soon, consider going with one that supportsIPv6. While conversion from IPv4 to IPv6

networking appears to still be some timecoming, a router that supports IPv6 willhelp you keep your network intact whenyour ISP transitions over to IPv6 as well. Some routers also offer extras such as SO

card slots and USBports for printer sharingand external drive sharing. If those arefeatures you want in your network, look forrouter that support those features.
