A Framework for Managing Technology Debt

Awareness

Understand when making “tradeoff”

decisions, that in fact, you are incurring debt.

Assessment

Calculate the “interest rate” on the debt•What will happen if we delay?•What will happen if we don’t act at all?

Action

If the interest rate is low compared to the “value”

do not proceed.

If the interest rate is high and the forgiveness

probability is low act now.

• Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) calculated on a 1-9 scale• 1 - conceptualization• 9 - mission proven

• The higher the TRL the lower the risk and vice versa.

• Keep in mind: As technologies mature (e.g. product aging, obsolescence, leapfrogging), risk is introduced.

Technology Decisions Come Down to People

• At the end of the day… it’s all about people – Do business with people you trust.

• How do you handle Account Management?• What kind of service guarantees do you have?• How do you backup and secure data?• What is the emergency contact information?• Do you change for support or re-training?
