Riser Scanning

The Neptune System, used by Flexlife for riser scanning, is a unique ROV mounted subsea inspection tool designed by Oceaneering and utilising Flexlife’s patented UT scanning technology in order to determine the state of a flexible riser’s annulus with 100% accuracy. The loss of outer sheath integrity and consequent ingress of oxygenated seawater into the annular region is the principle cause of premature flexible riser failure.

RISER SCANNING

FACT:

Neptune includes ultrasonic hardware and software that allows real time inspection data to be transferred topside via the ROV umbilical.

The Neptune system has been extensively used by numerous operators worldwide having scanned 135 risers, as of Jan 2014. Empirical data gained from Neptune scanning provides invaluable data relating to the condition of the flexible riser annulus and enables operators to make informed decisions regarding the remnant life of these production critical assets. Since Neptune does not require access through annulus vent ports, this method is currently the only means of determining the integrity of flexible pipe annuli on risers with restricted or inaccessible vent ports.

The tool uses the absence or presence of liquid within the annulus region in order to determine whether the riser annulus is flooded or dry. A typical dry riser scan is detailed on the page opposite,

showing good definition of the riser’s outer sheath but no data thereafter. This scan represents an ideal scenario from an integrity standpoint.

Where liquid is found to be present within the pipe annulus, the UT signal can then propagate further into the pipe’s structure, in many cases enabling the critical outer tensile armour layers to be measured and characterised. This data is invaluable in enabling operators to safely maximise remnant life and to avoid the need for premature or unplanned shut down which can have significant adverse safety or commercial impact. A typical flooded riser scan is shown opposite.

This field proven technology is available for use anywhere in the world in order to address flexible pipe integrity concerns.
