Server Infastructure

•First, we want to have a more intuitive fast collaborative server infrastructure that allows students to share documents and files, and even work on them at the same time.

•We want everything to be server based so students can access their work from any computer.

Access the Server from Home

•We want a ip that students can connect to with a simple ftp client. For example, perhaps if a student typed in ftp://brawerman.xserve03.org, they would connect to the server.

Dual boot OS X and Ubuntu

•The children’s computers will dual boot both Mac OS X (apple’s operating system) and Ubuntu, a free linux distribution. Each child will have their own computer (Mac Book Pro 13” ($1199 list price--Much less for schools) Ubuntu is a great operating system for beginning to learn programming and linux. It also has thousands of free applications that can run on it.

Ubuntu in Practice•Children can have many more tools

at their disposal because Ubuntu software is free. For example, instead of buying photoshop (list $699---school discount: get a quote online) you can get Gimp for free. Gimp is a graphic editing program that does almost everything that Photoshop does.

Server RAID•Mac Pro server with 8tb (4x2tb drives) of

hard drive (storage) in a RAID 1+0 array. RAID 1+0 is a combination of RAID 1 and RAID 0. RAID 0 would combine 2 of the hard drives to create one 4tb hard drive. The other two drives would be mirrors (copies) of the first two drives. This means that if one of the drives dies, the server will switch to the mirror and keep running.

Wifi

•Apple’s Airport Extreme, a fast $199 router designed specifically for mac will run the schools wifi. Each classroom will have 1-2 of these in the classroom to ensure good wifi coverage all over the campus. The routers will get there signals from a Ethernet switch.

The Lab--Desks

Computer Lab desks. Children will bring there

school laptops to the lab, and place them on the

desks.

Smart Boards

Each classroom will have a new model smart board that

allow multiple people to use it at one time. This is great for

teachers to, for example, have their students work

together to solve a puzzle.
