Producer
In charge of the $$ - raising or providing it. Because they take the most risk they make the most money (if the show is successful) and make the major decisions about who is hired and how much should be spent in each area.
Director
In charge of the artistic “look” of the show. Usually considered 2nd in commend of a production. Makes decisions like who will be cast and what color scheme will be.
Technical Director
In charge of the technical elements of the show. Makes sure they happen on time, under budget, and safely. Will consult with the director frequently.
Vocal Director
In charge of any singing that happens. Makes sure the performers know the music and lyrics and “style” of the song.
Conductor
In charge of the rehearsal and performance of the instrumental musicians in the “pit”. Will lead the orchestra during the production’s actual performance.
Choreographer
In charge of any dance (sometimes also called “traffic patterns”) in a production.
Business Manager
In charge of keeping track of the $$. How it is spent, in what categories, pays bills, and runs payroll.
Designers (Set/Costume/Lighting/Sound/Hair/Make-up/Properties)
In charge of the creating the “look” of items on the stage. Director will have the final say of whether designs are going to “fly” or not.
Production Stage Manager
In charge of taking any technical notes during rehearsal. Assistant to the Technical Director.
Company Stage Manager
In charge of the actors during rehearsal process. Assistant to the Director.
Musicians
In charge of playing musical accompaniment during a production.
Dance Captain
Assistant to the Choreographer. Makes sure the dances stay “clean” and the actors are moving correctly.
House Manager
In charge of the audience’s comfort during a performance and in charge of tickets before a performance.
Publicity Manager
Makes sure audience members are aware a production is being shown: time, price, etc.
Master Carpenter
In charge of building the set (with crew)
Master Electrician
Hangs and focuses the lights, as well as putting lighting cues into the lighting board.
Sound Engineer
In charge of all sound equipment (mics, cd player, speakers, etc) and sound cues.
Properties Manager
Buys, borrows, rents, or builds all “props” used in the production. Organizes and maintains them throughout the production.
Wardrobe Mistress
Builds, borrows, rents, or buys all costumes (and accessories) needed in a production. Will also maintain (wash) or repair costumes throughout show’s run.
Make-up/Hair Manager
Designs and helps actors to re-create (each night) the necessary make-up and/or hair applications.
Cast/Actors
Learns lines, blocking, and characterization necessary to fulfill character(s) hired to play.
Ushers
Takes tickets and assists seating audience in proper seat. Will also deal with minor audience issues.
