SAUDI ARABIA’S GENERAL Authority of CivilAviation spent US$1.2bn on the expansion of thePrince Mohammed Bin Abdul Aziz InternationalAirport in Medina. The first phase of the newterminal opened in July 2015.Following the inauguration of the terminal,
Frost & Sullivan analysts stated that the expansioncould pave the way for growth in Medina’seconomy, improve commercial trade to more thanUS$107mn and generate nearly 20,000 jobs. The Medina airport expansion is one among
several initiatives being undertaken by the SaudiArabian government to upgrade its aviationindustry. Through infrastructure development, privatisation and market liberalisation, theKingdom of Saudi Arabia is keen to furthersophisticate the sector. The newly-opened three-level terminal spans
more than 156,940 sqm with 16 aircraft standsand boarding bridges. In addition to facilitatingeasy travel for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, civilaviation authorities are looking to position thenew airport as a hub for economic activity too.Frost & Sullivan has estimated that there arenearly 11mn tourists annually in the country, ofwhich 5.7mn are aviation passengers. Air traffic islikely to grow at a CAGR of 27.2 per cent over thenext decade. In view of this, the airport expansionproject assumes special significance, analysts said. Meanwhile, the Medina airport will be operated
as a private enterprise. The country has beenmoving towards aviation privatisation – the sale ofSaudia Airlines was the first of several such steps.
“Besides improving efficiency, privatisationensures that airport management will have amore focused business outlook that couldcontribute to the economy of the country. Growthis also more likely in the privatisation setup withairports looking to non-aeronautical revenuesources as well,” said Frost & Sullivan seniorconsultant for business and financial servicesVinod Cartic. Additionally, the Medina airport could also
pave the way for the Medina Aerotropolis – anurban area where all business and economicactivities are centered around the airport, addedthe consultancy. Through such measures, thecountry hopes to make a noticeable impact in theaviation industry. In the near future, SaudiArabia’s aviation sector looks poised for growth, fuelled by enhanced infrastructure, economicconditions, an increase in population with ahigher disposable income and an open capitalmarket, Frost & Sullivan’s analysts noted.

DUBAI’S DP WORLD has begun constructionwork on the new container terminal in Dubai’sJebel Ali Port.
Phase 1 of Terminal 4 will cost US$1.6bn andallow for 3.1mn twenty foot equivalent (TEUs)by 2018, taking the total capacity of the port to22.1mn TEUs. The complex will be equippedwith 110 cranes, with a total quay length ofabout 11,000 metres, said DP World officials.
“The new capacity is a response to feedbackfrom customers expressing the need for morecapacity at Jebel Ali due to an expected increasein trade in the run-up to Expo 2020. Shipping lines will be able to bring more of the world’s largestvessels to our terminals,” said DP World chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem.
Meanwhile, the company said there was an increase of 4.1 per cent in its container volumes theworldover. The Dubai-based company handled 30.6mn TEUs with growth largely driven by itsterminals in Europe and the UAE. In addition, Jebel Ali was named the most productive port of2014 by the Journal of Commerce (JOC)’s Port Productivity Data report. Nearly two million TEUs ofcapacity at the semi-automated Terminal 3 will be increased in the second half of 2015.

KUWAIT’S INFRASTRUCTURE SECTOR isexpected to grow 20 per cent in 2015, saidinvestment bank Alpen Capital’s GCC ConstructionIndustry report. Projects aimed at greater GCCintegration and economic diversification areserving as key growth drivers, cited the report. TheGCC plans to boost investment in the constructionsector by showcasing the region as a tourist andinvestment destination, helping to increase theindustry’s value from US$91.5bn to US$126.2bn inthe three years to 2016, it added. There is a lot of buzz in the country’s
construction sector. Based on analysis done on the100 largest construction contracts in the GCC in2014, Kuwait stood third after Saudi Arabia and theUAE based on value of projects in the pipeline. InKuwait, certain major projects are also well poisedto attain completion – in June 2015, Cairo-basedArab Contractors said the 142 km-long Al Jahraroad project connecting the industrial area ofShuwaikh to Kuwait City was on track to becompleted in 2016. The US$855.7mn project is oneof a number of planned infrastructure upgrades, along with the US$2.6bn Sheikh Jaber Causeway, which will link Kuwait to Silk City; and the US$7bnKuwait City Metro, scheduled for completion in2018 and 2019, respectively. The report also pointed out the increase in
demand for public housing, which is likely to drivelong-term residential construction growth.Kuwait’s Public Authority for Housing and Welfareannounced plans to build 174,000 housing units by2020. Private contractors can capitalise on severalmajor developments such as the MutlahResidential Project, Al Subiyah Residential City andSabah Al Ahmad township. The Kuwaitigovernment also plans to employ a public-private
partnership model to deliver public housing, including 11,000 units under the Sabah Al Ahmadproject, which will house up to 100,000 peopleupon completion.Despite the construction sector looking rather
promising, experts have cited several reasons aspotential blocks. Rising cost of materialsaccompanied by falling oil prices could very wellcurtail the country’s infrastructure budget, said theAlpen Capital report. According to the country’sNational Assembly's Budget and Final AccountCommittee Adnan Abdulsamad, consolidatedrevenues at state-owned Kuwait PetroleumCorporation (KPC) are expected to fall by 36 percent year-on-year in the financial year 2015-16. In addition, construction materials are also
expensive. The region generally faces a shortage ofbasic building materials such as limestone, gabbro, cement and steel. Alpen Capital stated thatKuwait’s GCC construction index rose 57.5 per centto 156.4 per cent in the decade to 2013. Rawmaterials, meanwhile, are expected to rise four tofive per cent, exacerbated by supply bottlenecks.

DESPITE GLOBAL OIL prices sharply declining since mid-2014, the global construction industry has demonstratedstrong signs of recovery, with surges in property
development and infrastructure investment outweighing the declinein oil and gas projects. This conclusion derives from an internationalstudy of construction costs conducted by global programmemanagers Turner & Townsend, one of many firms experiencing anupturn in profits from its activities in the Middle East region, afterannouncing its own global revenue increased by 45 per cent in 2014-2015. Its Middle East team has grown by 30 per cent to around 300people across its four offices in the region since 2010 and regionalrevenue from its Middle East construction consultancy grew 45 percent to US$40.44mn.
While the company’s International Construction Market Survey2015, which analyses input costs – such as labour and materials –and charts the average construction cost per square metre for
commercial and residential projects in a number of markets aroundthe world, did not cite any cities in the Middle East as “hot”markets, it did state that the global construction industry wasbeginning to show strong signs of recovery in what it termed a“largely positive” picture.
Turner & Townsend CEO Vincent Clancy remarked, “It’s a changinglandscape, with some markets seeing significant increases in activity, while others, which were booming, have fallen back.
“Many countries have significant plans to invest in infrastructure, and several cities are poised for further growth led by overseasinvestors. But, for many, it remains an uneven climb back to thelevels of activity enjoyed before 2008.”
One clear and positive sign for construction markets in the MiddleEast, particularly those in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), is therise in demand being experienced by construction machinery rentalfirms. On a global scale, demand for construction machinery hasbeen forecast by US-based industry research firm The FreedoniaGroup, to advance 3.9 per cent per year through to 2019 toUS$218bn. While annual growth has decelerated somewhat fromthe high levels experienced during the period between 2009-2014(9.3 per cent), its World Construction Equipment study forecastannual growth of five per cent throughout Africa and Middle Eastoutpacing global demand over the same period.
As the member states of the GCC look to diversify their economies at a time of lower oil prices, business is beginning topick up for the region’s construction industry.

“The construction industry inthe UAE is slowly getting back
to its previous form”
Technical Review Middle East - Annual Construction Review 2015
It’s no surprise that the Middle East is among the marketsoutperforming the global standard – especially in the GCC where thebig project announcements, while fewer than during the boomperiod of the previous decade, remain a constant feature on thenews pages of industry publications throughout the region.
Around the GCCIn Saudi Arabia the construction market is picking up, andinternational construction trade events, such as bauma, have beentargeting the country in greater numbers.
The building sector in Saudi Arabia is among the country’s fastest-growing sectors and the high level of state investment in expandingthe transport infrastructure, says bauma, will ensure above-averagegrowth for the sector.
“Provisional figures for 2014 in the construction industry putgrowth here at around 6.7 per cent in real terms,” event organiserMesse München reveals.
A recent report from Research and Markets, Saudi ArabiaConstruction Equipment Rental Market Forecast and Opportunities,2020, found that the construction equipment rental market in SaudiArabia was forecast to grow at a CAGR of more than 12 per centduring 2014-20.
“Growing preference for equipment rentals rather thanpurchases, increasing infrastructure spending and easy availability ofconstruction equipment on rent are the major factors propelling theconstruction equipment rental market in Saudi Arabia,” the report’sauthors comment. The report found that the crane rental segmentdominates Saudi Arabia’s construction equipment rental market, followed by excavator rental and wheel loader rental segments, withregions in the south-west and north-central collectively accountingfor the majority of the country’s construction equipment rentalmarket in 2014.
“Robust growth in the construction sector is fuelling the demandfor construction equipment in Gulf countries,” the report states.“Saudi Arabia is the largest construction market in the GCCregion...growth in construction activities is being underpinned byincreasing focus of private and public participants to diversify intonon-oil sectors.”
With close to 300 major infrastructure projects in the planning orexecution stages throughout Saudi Arabia, the market is clearlyproviding equipment rental firms and suppliers with plenty to bepositive about, and is continue to drive foreign and local investmentin the Kingdom’s construction industry.
In Kuwait, meanwhile, US$188bn of construction projects arebelieved to be currently at the planning or construction stages, withthe country’s construction sector set for significant growth, according to the organisers of the upcoming Big 5 Kuwait exhibition.
Ashley Roberts, event director of The Big 5 Kuwait, says, “Kuwaithas earmarked US$7.2bn from its annual budget for 2015-2016 forthe construction sector and accelerated the sector’s growth.”
The Kuwaiti state is planning to develop a host of new rail linksand road upgrades, as well as seaports and airports.
The Kuwait government has plans to build hundreds of thousandsof government-funded residential units by 2020, in order to helpthe construction sector continue growing, as well as tacklechallenges presented by a reduction in oil revenues and rising rawmaterials cost.
Research firm BMI, revealed in its latest report that Bahrain wouldexperience construction sector growth of 3.6 per cent up to 2018,thanks to government-led investment in infrastructure and socialhousing. The report found that Bahrain’s government has plans forinfrastructure projects worth US$4.4bn, of which US$2.2bn has beenallocated between 2015-17 towards housing construction, and therest to be channelled towards the water and power sectors.
Large-scale industrial projects on their way in Bahrain include theUS$4.8bn expansion and modernisation of the state-run Bapcorefinery, a US$2.2bn production line at Alba, a US$1.2bn expansionproject by Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company, and plans toexpand Bahrain International Airport. Technical studies are alsounder way for the long-discussed US$5bn second causeway linkingthe country with Saudi Arabia.
Fast growth in QatarIn another report from BMI, Qatar is named as “the fastest-growingconstruction and infrastructure market in the GCC region”. Theresearch firm’s 10-year forecast found that Qatar’s constructionindustry was experiencing an annual average real growth rate of10.2 per cent, which will no doubt be elevated as the 2022 FIFAWorld Cup edges closer.
BMI’s Country Risk team says it believes that Qatar’s economicactivity will continue to expand at a strong pace throughout 2015,driven primarily by growth in the non-oil sector, and supported by afast-growing population, large government spending commitments, and continued progress on infrastructure projects.
Ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and in line with the country’s2030 Vision development plan, Qatar’s spending on infrastructure isexpected to reach about US$150bn over the next decade, withUS$4.1bn budgeted up to 2015 on electricity and water projects,

BMI’s Infrastructure Key Projects Database recorded US$67bn oftransport projects at the planning stage or under construction, whilethe expansion of the recently-opened Hamad International Airport isalso planned.
“We note growth will accelerate in the run-up to 2022, but willfalter in the aftermath of the World Cup – although Qatar’s Vision2030 should keep growth positive,” remarks BMI.
In Oman, the infrastructure sector is bearing witness to a hugeexpansion worth US$78bn, according to IQPC Middle East. IQPC says
that the majority of this investment is allocated to transportinfrastructure, with a number of road projects, bridge structures, tunnel construction and national railway network developments tobe constructed over the next five years.
In Q2 2015, Drake & Scull Engineering subsidiary Drake & ScullEngineering Oman won a series of major contracts worth a total ofAED350mn (US$95.3mn), which included the delivery of MEP workson the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre in Seeb, two hotelsin Saraya Bandar Jissah near Muscat, and an airport hangar-relatedfacility. These project awards demonstrate the lengths to whichOman’s government is going to support and invest in differentindustries, and all of which is fuelling growth in the country’sconstruction sector.
Ahmad Al Naser, managing director of Drake & Scull EngineeringLLC, remarks, “Oman’s real estate sector is making steady advanceswith the announcement of several new and upcoming projects.”
After Saudi Arabia, the second-largest Gulf market forconstruction projects is the UAE, where last year Ventures MiddleEast revealed in its GCC Building Construction and Interiors report, that US$21.28bn worth of projects in the UAE were due forcompletion by the end of last year. Since that report was released, the drop in oil prices appears to have had little affect on continuedplanning and construction throughout the emirates.
Major investment in tourism-related projects, infrastructure andnon-residential building segments has continued, and with Dubai’splans for Expo 2020 showing no sign of abating, the market looks setto carry on performing well.
Kanishka Singh, an associate in the construction and infrastructureteam at Al Tamimi & Co. told Technical Review, “The constructionindustry in the UAE is slowly getting back to its previous form. If youlook at the UAE government’s budget, construction is one of theforemost sectors.
“Expo 2020 has created a lot of hype, there are plans to lay newlines and the current metro line is also being extended, whileresidential apartments and new hotels are being constructed,” henotes. “People in the industry are looking forward to 2020, and theauthorities are focused on executing Expo 2020’s goals and ensuringthe related work is carried out without any issue.”
The slowdown, it would appear, is finally over for the GCC’sconstruction sector, and, with the investment and commitment toupcoming projects continuing largely unabated, companies shouldsee increased profit margins and growing workforces across theregion. If oil prices remain low, but stable, the collective willthroughout the GCC to diversify economic activity should ensure asteady stream of business for an industry that has endured sluggishgrowth in recent years.

T HE MIDDLE EAST remains an important region forinternational construction companies. Despite the recent fallin oil prices, building schemes continue largely unabated – at
least in the GCC states – although the emphasis has shifted fromheadline-grabbing showcase pieces to more practical infrastructureand industrial projects.
Business research group BMI predicted that the majority of suchprojects would continue over the coming years, as countries in theGulf continue to diversify their economies.
Combined with the relative slowdown in construction in the moremature markets of Europe and North America over recent years, thismeans the region looks set to remain a key market for manufacturersof construction equipment. They have been positioning themselves totake full advantage of the opportunities as they present themselves.
Bobcat“The Middle East is one of the most important regions for Doosan,”states Gaby Rhayem, regional director Middle East and North Africaat Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment, which owns Bobcat.“Within the EMEA (Europe-Middle East-Africa) region, and especiallyconsidering the downturn in the European market, the Middle East isbecoming more important due to the many construction projects, especially in countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which areleading the way.”
Bobcat has introduced a number of new machines in the regionrecently, including a new range of telescopic handlers and the S450
Over the last six months, many of the major brands of construction machinery have released new pieces of equipment designed specifically for use in the Middle East.

skid-steer loader, which replaces the famous S130 – a model Rhayemcalls a “legend” in the Middle East.
The compact S450 has a 10 per cent larger cab than itspredecessor, which is fully pressurised to minimise sand and dustentry, and comes with optional air conditioning – a first for a loaderof this size.
Other key features on the machine include improved hydraulicperformance – achieved by increasing the system pressure andchanging the hydraulic components and hose and tube line routings –as well as a new tailgate design, an integrated rear bumper andenhanced serviceability.
“Many elements in the machines are designed for the hottemperature and the humidity, like the cooling and hydraulicsystems,” says Rhayem, adding that all models released in the MiddleEast are designed for, and tested in, the region prior to release.
Volvo Construction Equipment (CE)“The popularity of value brands – lower spec machines for a little bitless demanding work, for a lower price – in the emerging markets hasbeen growing tremendously in recent years,” says Volvo CE’s TomasKuta, president of the EMEA region. “Value brands today consist ofabout 80 per cent of the total volume of machines sold around theworld, so it’s a big chunk.”
With this in mind, in June, the company unveiled its new range ofwheel loaders – the G series – which were designed specifically foruse in the emerging markets of the Middle East and Africa.
The three new models, the L60Gz, L90Gz and L120Gz, have the
same transmission, axels and engine used in Volvo’s other wheelloaders, such as the F series, but with certain other aspects of thespecification made optional in order to minimise the base cost.
Volvo say the G-series machines also feature load-sensinghydraulics, Z-bar linkage for greater breakout force, and a well-matched powertrain, meaning they are tailored to increaseproductivity in the most demanding conditions.
CaterpillarAn ability to operate in ‘extreme conditions’ is a common hallmark ofconstruction machinery designed for the Middle East.
Caterpillar released its new D8R crawler dozer in March 2015,which the company says is adept at operating in the region’sdisparate mixture of terrains and temperatures.
It has an elevated-sprocket undercarriage for maximum groundcontact and greater traction on uneven terrain, an advanced modularcooling system for optimum engine cooling capacity and increasedairflow, and improved cab pressurisation to keep out sand.
The company also unveiled its latest range of articulated trucks;the C series. Caterpiller say the machines have a variety of new andimproved features including new transmissions with expandedelectronic control, automatic traction and retarder control, hill assistand waiting brake systems, as well as engines that meet US EPA Tier 4Final/EU Stage IV emission standards.
JCBEmissions are an increasingly important issue for vehicles destinedfor the Middle East market, with many countries across the regionpushing through legislation to bring their laws into line with the moreregulated markets.
Dubai, for example, is currently assessing plans for the introductionof Euro IV standards in the near future.
It is against this backdrop that JCB launched its 1CX-T – the trackedversion of its 1CX backhoe loader, with a Tier 3-compliant 49hpengine and a power management system that controls transmissionoutput, maximising pushing power while minimising fuelconsumption. JCB says the new model also has 14 per cent greaterbucket capacity than the 1CX, and 320mm tracks for a lower groundpressure than the wheeled model, allowing the machine to work onloose ground.
The company also recently released the JS370 crawler excavator –a machine it says was designed for the Middle East and launchedafter “extensive testing and validation…carried out with customers inthe region to ensure the machine can perform in the mostdemanding climates”.
Replacing the JS360, this newest model has a six-cylinder 210kWdiesel engine and comes equipped with higher capacity cooling packsand a variable speed fan to ensure optimum temperature.

THE BOOM BEING experienced bythe construction industry in manyparts of the Middle East has seen
an increase in issues surrounding standardhigh-visibility clothing, as many firms askhow the industry can benefit fromwearable technology for personalprotection and keep their workers safe1.
In 2014 it was reported that as much asUS$114bn worth of construction projectcontract awards were made , which is goodnews all-round for businesses operating inthe region, as well as for GDP as a whole. However, the increase in constructionprojects has inevitably brought about aseries of knock-on effects.
A few of the issues faced by theconstruction industry have been welldocumented in the media, withconstruction workers suffering the illeffects of working in the region’s soaringdaytime temperatures. The UAE’s responseto ban labour work between the hours ofmidday and 3pm during summer monthsseems a sensible approach.
For companies that choose to avoid themidday sun and allow work to take placeduring the hours of darkness, or indeedany company that has employees whofrequently work in areas of low light, thereis an option that could transform the waythey protect their staff.
Evolution of the high-vis jacketSince the appearance of high-visibilityclothing back in the 1960s, the yellowjacket has slowly evolved and with theintroduction of European and internationalstandards, the overall design andeffectiveness of the high-vis vest hasimproved over the years.
The main issue with the traditional high-vis vest, however, is that it requires anadditional light source or ‘ambient light’,for the garment to light up. This can beproblematic in many areas of constructionspaces where such light is not always
available. Given that the high-vis vest hasbeen around for so long, its functionalityhas remained relatively unchanged, and itis clear that the vest needs to evolve sothat workers in outdoor spaces – especiallythose who work in the hours of darkness –can be seen at all times.
Thinking creatively aboutconstruction site lightingPowered light safety wear is a newtechnology that allows garments to lightup without the need for an additional lightsource. The technology works through thepresence of a battery-operatedelectroluminescent core, which activelyemits light. This, combined with prismatichigh-visibility reflective tape, provides agarment that, when worn in completedarkness, can be seen up to 1.5 miles (2.41 km) away (Source: Network Rail, UK).
Some of the major players in highways, construction, aviation and railway in theUK, including the London Underground,Network Rail and Balfour Beatty, havealready bought into the technology.
In 2014, Garry Pratt, senior projectmanager at Transport for London and his team carried out extensive trials ofFhoss products on the Jubilee Line of theLondon Underground.
“The results and overall feedback havebeen outstanding and users havecommented on how safe they feel whenwearing the garments,” comments Pratt.“Not only do the men on the ground standout more, but they are able to spot theircolleagues from a good distance away.”
In recent months, Fhoss has beenworking with companies in the Middle Eastto develop a product suitable specificallyfor workers in hot and humidtemperatures. Made from breathablemesh fabric, the Fhoss FiLumin is alightweight and self-illuminating safetyvest that keeps workers lit up in allweather conditions, as well as in areas oftotal darkness.
It is clear that investing in up-to-date,high-visibility workwear is something thatcompanies in the region should be takingvery seriously.
I feel very strongly that the future ofhigh-visibility clothing in the constructionindustry worldwide has to lie in poweredlight safety wear and it is my personal goalthat by 2025 this technology will becommonplace at construction sites acrossthe Middle East.
Andrew Kimitri, CEO of Fhoss Technology, discusses the development of high-visibility clothing and the role the it isplaying in making construction sites safer throughout the Middle East.

MAINTAINING AN ENGINEgenerating set is normally a two-stage process. First comes making
sure the prime mover actually startsimmediately and runs up to speed / workingtemperature smoothly. This is a routineprocess based on checking the condition ofthe battery, the actuation of systemcontrols, the status of all warning lights andalarms, and the fuel supply including theinjectors themselves. It is also a case of ensuring that there is an
adequate volume of diesel in the tank, boththe oil switch and governor handle have
been turned on, and that both air andexhaust systems are clear. All of which areroutine procedures for any diesel mechanicon the road or on a construction project. With any industrial-scale engine
generator, however, there are further checksto carry out at the output end where thebrushless alternator (if fitted) is located, invariably driven by a rotating mechanicalshaft (PTO). Subsidiary on/off controls arelikely to be installed at this end and need tobe checked for status. The most likely cause of inadequate volts
being supplied following start-up is a
damaged solid-state capacitor or old-stylecondenser, which can be readily changed onthe spot. If inadequate or nil power output is still
indicated, then the second probable cause isa short circuit within the rectifier assembly, which can be checked with a hand-heldmultimeter. The next step is to ensure a goodconnection is being maintained between thiskey component and the coil itself, anothertask for that handy little measuring device. With all this done, adequate power shouldbe available when the engine is up to speed. The voltage available, however, may still
be below specification, in which case theengine controls and/or governor may not beworking properly – a job for an enginemechanic rather than an on-site electricaltechnician. Low-output voltage may also bedue to short-circuiting of the rotor reels orthe stator within the alternator itself; afterroutine checking of performance these keycomponents may themselves need to bechanged. Well-organised construction siteshave original-supplier approved (OEM)spares in store; the genset is just asimportant as the other plant employed.Other reasons for voltage drop may
include slipping of the power take-off shaft, another task for the diesel specialist first asthis can lead to overheating of the damage-prone alternator assembly, about which theelectricians are not going to be happy.Overheating may also be due to a shortcircuit existing within the rotor or statorassemblies; again these should be changedwith OEM supplies if necessary. With someof the obscurer nameplates found ongensets in the region, these may be difficultto source. With the alternative brush-type
alternator, power output problems can bedue to wearing out or even mis-fitting (polereversal) of this critical carbon component.Over-high voltage is rarely encounteredbecause of the automatic operation of themachine’s own regulation system; low-
Most contractors have a genset available to supply standby or permanent power. Around the world safe and reliable dieselis the favoured engine technology on construction sites, but voltage problems can often be traced to the output end.

voltage indications are likely to be due toproblems within the AVR system itself (mostlikely as this device is susceptible to burn-outand other malfunction), the rotor or stator, all of which should be checked and, ifnecessary, changed.Once again, PTO shaft slippage or short-
circuiting of either rotor or stator may be thecause of the overheating, in which casechecking of these components should be
carried out before the engine is taken apartfor corrective maintenance to be applied tothe power shaft itselfGenset operators throughout the Gulf

ATLAS COPCO HAS launched its UD+coalescing compressed air filter, combiningtwo filtration processes in one product. According to its manufacturer, the UD+ is“unique” to the market, helping usersachieve energy savings and “reliably”clean compressed air.The UD+ is a two-in-one filter, whichcombines the reliability and performanceof wrapped filters with a 40 per centreduction in pressure drops whencompared with pleated filters.“Our compressed air solutions are of thehighest quality, so our air treatmentsolutions should be too,” said Paul Clark, business line manager – industrial air atAtlas Copco. “With the UD+, we havelaunched a compressed air filterinnovation that saves space, energy andmoney without compromising onreliability and air quality.”
Traditionally, two inline filters are requiredto bring oil aerosol and solid particles inthe compressed air down to acceptablelevels for most applications (ISO 8573-1 Oilclass 1 and 2; ISO 8573-1 Solid particleclass 1). The UD+ replaces both filters, therefore saving space and reducingpressure drops by 40 per cent. Testing hasdemonstrated that the UD+ achieves theair quality of two traditional filters, due tothe glass fibre filter media package, whichis wrapped around the filter. According toAtlas Copco, the technology is moreefficient and offers increased reliabilityover traditional, pleated filters, which areprone to cracking. The UD+’s reliability andperformances have been certifiedaccording to ISO 12500-1:2007 and ISO8573-2:2007 standards by TÜV Rheinland, with available models ranging from acapacity of 9 l/s to 8000 l/s.

THE GROWING REQUIREMENT to conform to energy-efficiencystandards and reduce carbon emissions have been cited as leadingtrends within the global air compressors market in a report madeavailable by online market research firm ReportsnReports.com.
According to the Global Air Compressor Market: Forecast andStatistical Analysis 2015-2019 report, developing countries andregional government bodies, predominantly in Europe and NorthAmerica, have been taking stringent steps to ensure that varioustypes of industrial equipment, such as motors, compressors, pumpsand fans, conform to the respective regional regulations. The reportalso states that vendors within the market have been facingincreasing pressure due to high costs associated with compressors. The report considers revenues generated from the sale of positivedisplacement (PD) compressors and centrifugalcompressors, as well as the stationary and portablesegments within the compressors industry, andrevealed that the PD compressor segmentaccounts for the largest share of the market.
For the forecast period of thereport, PD compressors areexpected to continue leading thesector. The report stated, however, that when demand is continuousand requires time-orientedoperational capabilities, centrifugal compressors arepreferred by industries requiringhigh compressed air. Whilecentrifugal air compressors areoften costlier than PD variants, they require lower maintenance. The report noted that centrifugalcompressors would, over the forecastedperiod, witness a relatively higher demand from
industries that require a continuous supply of oil-free compressedair. Among the companies recognised by the report as “key players”in the global air compressors market were Atlas Copco, IngersollRand and Kobe Steel, with other prominent vendors including BOGE,Doosan, Dresser-Rand, Gardner Denver, GE, Hitachi, KaeserKompressoren, Kirloskar, Mitsubishi, Siemens and Wuxi Compressor.
The report stated that end-users were moving towards newertechnologies such as variable-speed drive (VSD) compressors, oil-free compressors, controllers and other high-quality products thatincrease efficiency and reduce energy bills.
It added that various government regulations that are set to beproposed would define the course of the gas compressors market inthe future, noting that the US Environmental Protection Agency andthe Department of Energy have been formulating various guidelines
relating to industrial equipment energy efficiencyrequirements that include compressors. The 76-page report, added that the
EU had also enacted regulationsregarding compressor and vacuum pump
safety, in order to make compressoroperations safer and to reduce
harmful emissions. The report further stated
that government scrutinyregarding the flouting of rulescould increase during theforecast period, which wouldalso place strain on thevendors within the gascompressor market.

HAVIng LAUnCHeD A family of ‘Master BuildersSolutions’, the Construction Chemicals division of BASFhas maintained that the world’s building industries
account for around one-half of total energy and resourcesconsumption. Just how these are measured for comparison is notquite clear, but the company says they can be significantly reduced“if you just add the right chemistry”.
As just one example, the German chemical giant’s new ‘GreenSense’ concrete technology has been specifically developed toimprove the economic performance – including energy demand –of new structures, through resource-efficient production andprocessing techniques. These improve performance characteristicssuch as resilience, workability and durability, as well as acceptanceby environmentalists. All of this is achieved by optimising and eco-analysing the concrete mix itself, including the use ofhyperplasticizers such as BASF’s own MasterGlenium.
As a result of using the mix, savings of around 15,800 tons of CO2equivalent have been claimed, as well as significant reductions infine dust emissions and more than 25,000MWh in total, during theerection of the new One World Trade Center building in New York. All of these savings have been compared with using conventionalmix design.
The package was first used in Europe in a seven-storey project atBASF’s own new headquarters. With a total area of 35,000 sq ft,this has provided 1,400-plus work places in conformity with the‘Gold’ certification standard of the German Sustainable BuildingCouncil (DGNB).
This LEED-equivalent award demands the highest performancethrough all stages of a building’s life, including construction, dailyuse and ultimate dismantlement.
More than 2,000 cu/m of concrete were processed in the castingof the structure’s foundation slab itself, using a mix design that wasoptimised using the company’s Green Sense eco-friendlyefficiency-analysis techniques.
“We have aligned our concrete admixtures with the rawmaterials used by the concrete manufacturer, thereby achievingsavings of around 30 per cent in CO2 equivalents compared with aconventional concrete mix design,” said Dr. Sven Asmus, theexecutive responsible for concrete admixtures.
BASF points out that another benefit is the substantial reductionin installation-related noise at the busy city-centre site. This wasbecause two special admixtures, including MasterGlenium, wereincorporated into the flowability and the self-compactingproperties of the mix were improved significantly, making it largelyunnecessary to use vibration after the pour. This would be afeature much appreciated by sleep-deprived residents in the Gulf’surban areas, where 24-hour working is now the norm.
At all stages clear documentation and complete transparency ofthe entire construction process are required if the Gold standard ofsustainability is to be achieved in Germany itself. BASF’s own ‘LifeCycle Analyzer’ software can be used to enable concrete suppliersand placement operators to improve their process efficiency interms of raw materials selection and energy consumption, as wellas the quality of the final poured product.
The company says the combination of market know-how,research competence and consultancy expertise makes its GreenSense concrete technology “an elaborated, field-proven conceptfor sustainable construction”.
Now available is a new range of branded products that havebeen designed to make the construction process more mindful ofthe environment generally, resulting in sustainable buildings thatare more durable and efficient throughout their life cycle, and lesstaxing on the earth’s physical resources too, says the company.
Optimised concrete mix design is just one of a range of sophisticated new possibilitiesmade available by German chemical producer BASF.

NEXT GENERATIONTECHNOLOGY is expected to playa key role in how we are going to
plan, design, build and operateinfrastructure. It is critical that we adoptnext generation technology, as the moneyavailable today is not enough to meet thechallenge using traditional methods andtools. If we don’t become more efficient, the roads and bridges we drive on are goingto fall apart, along with a host of massiveinfrastructure failures. Technology todayhelps us increase productivity, have moreaccurate material take-offs, avoid clashesand reduce site rework.
Computer-aided design (CAD) iscommonly used in all developments, largeand small scale. Autodesk AutoCAD is one ofthe defacto standards for detailed design.Increasingly enhanced, discipline-specific
CAD, such as AutoCAD Civil3D or AutodeskRevit are being adopted. These providedesign engineers with technologyenhancements that enable cost and timesavings, as well as more accurate and rapidlychangeable designs by offering dynamic, intelligent 3D CAD models.
The use of CAD for any project greatlyhelps to enhance the creative abilities of anindividual or design team –allowing to fullyvisualise and communicate their ideas.
A place in historyIn 1982, Autodesk made a major leapforward from the birth of the personalcomputer, the IBM PC, with the release ofAutoCAD. Being technology pioneers of thistime, the company has been dubbed as thedisruptor in the Era of Documentation. Thechallenge Autodesk addressed was to move
2D drawings onto a computer and therelease of AutoCAD helped them lead theway. The company made another bold stepforward during the Era of Optimisation, bycreating 3D models and using them tovisualise and optimise a design before aprototype was even built.
Today, industry analysts have pointed outthat we are entering a new era, the Era ofConnection. This new era throws thespotlight on building applications andsolutions that not only connect a communityof people to a 3D model, but also connectsthem to the new means of production, thenew means of consumption, and supportsthe new definition of what a product is. Thisera of connection is made possible thanksprimarily to the emergence of the cloud, anatural hub of collaboration that brings withit incredible agility.
Design technology forms an integral element for the creation and construction of new buildings, and processes such as BIM are helping the building sector to cut costs and increase time savingsacross a broad range of projects. Naji Attallah, head of AEC and manufacturing at Autodesk MEdiscusses the technology and its ever-evolving role.

Training programmesWhile foreign Building informationmodeling (BIM) resources will continue toplay a key role throughout the Middle East,a lack of local BIM resources would not be amajor issue to address. Firms can train andenable their staff through short-termtraining programmes tailored by Autodeskfor authorised training service providers. These are effective fast-track trainingprogrammes. In addition to training people,we also need to consider revisiting andenhancing the ‘processes’ to support theBIM Transformation.
Amid the growing adoption rate of BIM inthe Middle East region, there are stillcertain sectors that are not aware of theadvantages of BIM.
BIM will increasingly become the norm forthe design and maintenance of buildings, and its widespread use is central toimplementing the UAE Government’sconstruction strategy.
Autodesk University was introduced inthe Middle East in 2012, and 2015 will be itsfourth consecutive year. Last year’s editionwas dubbed the ‘largest CAD event in theMiddle East’, boasting an attendance ofmore than 700 design and engineeringprofessionals, students, creative hobbyists
and design enthusiasts from variousindustries. The event served as a
strategic and unique platform forparticipants to ‘Learn, Connect,Explore’ through activities thatincluded interactive workshops, demonstrations, knowledge sessionsand an exhibition.
Sustainable solutionsAutodesk offers sustainability optionsthat provide essential tools for greenbuilding design, manufacturing, energy modelling and sustainableinfrastructure projects. The MiddleEast is at the forefront of developing
Smart City solutions, meeting therising demand for energy and
resources from a large and growingurban population. The region’s
transition from a resource-based to aknowledge-based economy is helping fuelthe concept of smart cities.
Cities in the region face uniquechallenges in water and energy,
security, transportationand mobility,
sustainabledevelopmentand citizenengagement,
with governments now looking to find newways to manage these complexities with theincreased pressures of urbanisation.
Hosting the World Expo 2020 will allowDubai to position itself among the world’stop 10 sustainable cities, providing bothresidents and visitors with a highlyconnected, technology-centric environmentcommitted to optimisation of resources. Inline with this, His Highness SheikhMohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, VicePresident and Prime Minister of the UAEand Ruler of Dubai, has launched a strategyto transform Dubai into a Smart City, featuring 100 key initiatives within thepillars of life, society, mobility, economy, governance and environment.
In the cloudUsers today expect access to information onan anytime, anywhere basis and in a formatrelevant to their task to be able to instantlycollaborate with project stakeholders.Autodesk cloud and mobile technologies arenot only addressing this challenge but also,in some cases, leading. Autodesk is trying tobalance the paradigm of projectexpenditures in the office versusexpenditures on site, while also allowingaccess to technology on site using cloud andmobile. The company has recentlydeveloped BIM 360 field construction fieldmanagement software, which combinesmobile technologies for on-site use withcloud-based collaboration and reporting.
The solution is aimed at givingconstruction professionals the advantage ofnew ways to manage field processes, suchas quality, safety, and commissioningchecklists; distribution of plans anddrawings; and mobile 3D and BIMconstruction document access.
The onset of cloud and mobiletechnologies is ushering in a new way ofworking and managing projects. Autodesksoftware like Revit enables owners andoperators of construction projects toconceptualise, plan and implementconstruction projects through BIM. Inutilising these technologies, the entireconstruction process too has becomevirtual and mobile.

T echnical Review ME: What kind offeedback did you receive following the2015 edition of Middle East Electricity(MEE) and what plans do you have in placefor 2016?Anita Mathews: The feedback this year hasbeen overwhelming. MEE celebrated its40th anniversary edition in 2015 and whatbetter time to celebrate than when it is thelargest it has even been. This year wereceived more than 20,000 visitorsrepresenting 126 countries – the most wehave ever received. The internationality ofMEE was also replicated in our exhibitorstats, with 61 countries represented, 24national pavilions and close to 1,500exhibiting companies. A staggering 99 per cent of our visitors
would recommend attending to a colleague, with nearly the same amount planning toreturn for the 2016 edition of the show.Nearly half of our visitor profile this yearwas made up of distributors, agents andcontractors – all who have significantpurchasing power and were looking for newproducts to source – and more than 85 percent of the floor space at MEE 2016 wasbooked within two months of the closingthe doors on the 40th anniversary edition. While we are still in the planning phase
for 2016, we are aiming to increase ourinternational participation, both in visitorsand exhibitors, grow our lighting andsustainable solution show areas and deliveran even more thought-provoking, engagingseminar content schedule.
TRME: How important is it to have newproducts launched at MEE and how do youencourage exhibitors to use the event as aproduct launching platform?AM: In the words of John A. Griffiths, chiefexecutive officer of Lucy Electric, “We useMEE as a showcase for both our internalproduct development activities, as well as
thanking our customers for their loyalty andongoing support throughout the year.”Companies that exhibit with us, whether
it be newcomers or long-standingstakeholders, see MEE as the leadingplatform to put their latest products directlyin front of the people they would like to seethem – both regionally and internationally. Naturally, there is the networking aspect
of the event, as many of our exhibitors useMEE as their annual networking opportunityto meet with their clientele. One way we have tried to expand our
offering to visitors and exhibitors alike is, forthe first time ever this year, including a partof the show dedicated to lighting. As one ofour fastest-growing areas for a number ofyears now, the demand for floor spacededicated to this was too great to ignore sowe increased the overall floor space by anadditional 21 per cent to match this.
TRME: What is it about MEE that has seenit continually ranked among the world’sleading power events?AM: I think one of the most importantfactors is to never lose sight of managingthe expectations of the key stakeholders, toensure that we are able to satisfy therequirements of our exhibitors, visitors, sponsors and partners. I don’t use the termlightly when I say that ‘stakeholders arekey’, and one of the main drivers of theevent’s success has been maintaining ourfocus on this. For many of our exhibitors we have
grown right alongside them, building thetrust that is required to ensure the longevityof our event. We also strive to make surethat the core profile of the event remainsundiluted and we aim to deliver the rightcustomers to our exhibitors and vice versa.Currently, the show is spread over 14
halls at the Dubai World Trade Centre andwe have approximately 25,000 products ondisplay during the three-day event. It iscritical that we manage the visitor flowperfectly, ensuring all visitors who attendthe event are able to meet with themanufacturers and suppliers within theirareas of interest without any hassle.
TRME: Last year saw the addition of threenew national pavilions (Egypt, Moroccoand Czech Republic). How did thesepavilions perform and can we expect anynew national pavilions in 2016? AM: The country pavilions at MEE have beengrowing steadily over the years, both interms of size and number. National pavilionsplay a very critical role at our event; themanufacturers enjoy the governmentsubsidies and support that helps them withtheir participation, while, at the same time, the visitors are able to locate products andservices from specific countries from withinthe various country showcases.
Following the successes of the 2015 edition of Middle East Electricity earlier in the year, Anita Mathews, director –Informa Energy Group, discusses this year’s event and the organiser’s plans for the 2016 edition of the region’sleading power trade show.

INFORMATION FROM BOTH theintegral dissipation factor measurementand the local partial discharge
measurement complement, and/or confirmone another, giving network andmaintenance engineers more and bettercriteria for evaluating their assets.
The following example shows why it isimportant to keep the option of a dissipationfactor measurement and a partial dischargemeasurement open. Typically, defectivejoints, such as defective fittings or those withelectrically conducting faults, can bedetected with the PD test (see Table 1).
This is not the case, however, with moistjoints. In this example (see Fig. 1 and 2, aswell as Table 2), during tests in a network inHong Kong, the tan delta measurementdelivered information in this regard. The tandelta standard deviation on conductor 2,identified in Fig. 1, strengthens the suspicionof a moist joint, as the PD test cannot detectany PD activity (too much moisture). TheMWT, (i.e. the combination of cable testing and tan deltameasurement over 15 minutes), caused the joint to dry out and
the tan delta to drop significantly (Fig. 2). This reinforced thesuspicion of moisture being present.
In the second part of his analysis on the latest cable testing and diagnostics solutions for medium-voltage cables withVLF sine voltage sources, Martin Jenny, product manager at BAUR GmbH, Sulz (Austria), looks at how to collectadditional information and the voltage source for daily tasks.

Voltage source for daily tasksAbout 10 years ago, Elektrizitätswerk MittelbadenNetzbetriebsgesellschaft mbH (E-Werk Mittelbaden) compared a VLF 0.1Hz sine and a 50Hz method for the PD test based on more than 40 cable routes. As the 50Hz method produced toomany highly varying evaluations and especially more negativeprognoses at the time, which even today have not beenconsidered failures, the company decided on the VLF 0.1Hzsine method.
In the meantime, the VLF measurement with sine voltage has proved itself in hundreds of tests. This was evident in thediagnostic measurements performed on 240 km with 500 partialroutes in the 20kV network of E-Werk Mittelbaden on paper pulp insulated and mixed cable routes.
At E-Werk Mittelbaden, such cable routes have been diagnosed with a VLF sine 0.1Hz by means of PD and, for aboutseven years, with the tan delta measurement as well.
According to Werner Brucker, director of network operations, using both these diagnostic procedures produces a good overall view of the age and condition of the network. Any partial
routes classified as at risk are then promptly replaced. Isolatingdefective partial sections results in huge savings, as entire cableruns do not have to be replaced.
In practice, VLF measurement has proved to be suitable duringthe commissioning tests of new or modified cable systems forlocating faults precisely and for using a simultaneous PD test inthe future for detecting faults in the fittings so that the workinvolved in troubleshooting, such as installation faults, or duringmaintenance, like excavation work, can be kept to a minimum.
Brucker emphasises the weight and suitability for daily use asan essential advantage of the VLF sine voltage source. The 0.1Hztechnology can be transported and operated by any employee, which would certainly not be possible with a 50Hz system.
The use of a test car with two persons is rarely required, as theportable measurement and testing device is sufficient for mostcable lengths. A test car is therefore only necessary during everyseventh measurement or so.
E-Werk Mittelbaden has a clear cost advantage by applying theVLF 0.1Hz technology, as measurements are easily performed by asingle employee in a short time. Due to the short connection timeand test duration as well as the need for fewer persons, one caneasily test several cable routes per year.
Routes or partial sections identified as critical during themeasurements are scheduled for repair or replacement.Maintenance budgets can thus be planned accordingly. With theknowledge of weak points in the network and the condition-basedmaintenance it is possible to run the medium-voltage networkwith a low failure rate and in a cost-optimised manner, in spite ofthe growing cable stock.
The E-Werk Mittelbaden maintenance plan costs approx. €4mn(US$4.4mn), of which €2.5mn (US$2.8mn) relate to thedistribution network. The costs for cable diagnostics are currently€90,000 (US$99,913) per annum.
From the comparative tests conducted before procuring the VLFequipment, Brucker knows that there were distinct differencesbetween his VLF 0.1Hz sine and 50Hz measurements.
In practice, a changeover no longer seems relevant, as E-WerkMittelbaden has become very well acquainted with the VLF 0.1Hzmeasurements and their interpretation, and can gather measuredvalues with high reliability for classifying cable routes.
Owing to vast experience, it is even possible to predict withrelative accuracy whether a cable route is likely to fail in the shortor medium term, thus making it easier to prioritise maintenancemeasures accordingly.
In conclusionThe VLF sine voltage source makes it possible for a single personto perform cable tests and diagnostics of a cable route withportable equipment.
The ideal, load-independent sine form proved to be of benefitas far as the reproducibility of results is concerned and when goodcomparability of results is desired. The time-saving diagnosticsthus offers the following advantages:
• Specific allocation of maintenance budget• Cost savings by isolating faulty partial sections• Lower failure rate• Positive effect on the cost structure in relation to the network
failure rate• Quality of new cable routes (detection of installation faults
before any actual failure)

MONTRANO IS AN online monitoring systemdesigned for assessing the dielectric health ofpower transformers under load, according toOMICRON, provider of testing, diagnosis andmonitoring solutions for electrical power systems.
The application of OMICRON products enablesusers to assess the condition of the primary andsecondary equipment on their systems withcomplete confidence. Services offered in thearea of consulting, commissioning, testing, diagnosis and training make the product rangecomplete. The company offers partial discharge(PD) measuring systems for diagnostics and forperiodic and continuous monitoring. Themeasuring systems have a modular design, meaning they can easily be expanded if theusers' requirements increase. These PDmeasuring systems can be used on all devicesthat run at high voltages. Users include energyproviders and manufacturers of high-voltageequipment worldwide.
Dielectric flashover of insulation in bushings and transformers isone of the most frequent causes of failure in power transformers.Aging insulation progressively degrades to the point that it can nolonger withstand electrical stress. This can cause bushings toexplode, transformer destruction and long outages for repair.Online dielectric condition monitoring of bushing and transformerinsulation is therefore essential for managing transformer health.
The online monitoring system from OMICRON records changesin capacitance (C), dissipation/power factor (DF/PF), partialdischarge (PD) and transient over-voltages. These are primaryindicators of insulation breakdown, which can lead to dielectricfailure in bushings and transformers.
Advanced warning of pending failuresDetailed trend charts show you the dielectric state of insulationover time. Early warnings and alarms indicate the severity ofnegative trends. This enables you to assess the risk of failure andplan corrective action early to extent transformer service life.
Reliable online resultsThe system is designed to minimize the misleading impact thatchanges in grid unbalance (phase shifts) can have on C and DF/PFmeasurements. It achieves this by using the individual phases of a
nearby voltage transformer as an absolutemeasurement reference. The resulting accuracyenables reliable comparison with recommendedsupplier reference values to determine bushinginsulation condition.
Additionally, the monitoring system employsadvanced noise suppression using UHF signalsand a unique gating technique for reliable PDsource recognition. This enables the system toeffectively separate external noise, like corona, from harmful PD.
Web-based data accessA convenient web interface enables you to viewdata at any time to determine the actualdielectric condition of insulation in bushings andinside the transformer. The interface also allowsyou to schedule monitoring, set alarm andwarning thresholds and check system status.
Expert monitoring supportA dedicated team of HV engineers at OMICRON provides you withexpert service and support, such as onsite consulations to evaluatemonitoring requirements; system installation, setup and training;as well as assistance with data evaluation and assessment reports.
"The system was able to confirm the existence of partialdischarge (PD) in one of our transformers. This confirmed earlierDGA results. Many other systems and techniques had been triedpreviously and MONTRANO was the only system to successfullyprove that the PD was real. The detailed phase resolved analysis ofthe results carried out by OMICRON has also indicated specificlocations which could be the source of the PD," said Colin Feely, plant maintenance engineer, Powercor Australia.
Erwin Vögel, Voralberg Energienetze GmbH, Austria alsocommented, "The ability to see transient over-voltages attransformer bushings with MONTRANO also offers us newpossibilities to assess transformer condition."

MIDDLE EAST CONCRETE (MEC) andthe Plant, Machinery and VehiclesShow (PMV Live), taking place
alongside The Big 5 Dubai at the Dubai WorldTrade Centre 23-26 November 2015, promisesto be even bigger and better than ever before. The event represents one of the most rapidlyexpanding sectors of the annual building andconstruction show. As before, MEC and PMVLive will showcase the latest equipment andground-breaking technologies, whileproviding a venue for meeting top globalsuppliers and manufacturers as well asopportunities to attend free workshops andeducational seminars.
“One of our long-term exhibitors, MANTruck and Bus, is celebrating its 100thanniversary by bringing along a 100-year-oldtruck to display on its stand during the event,”said Nathan Waugh, portfolio director, MECand PMV Live.
Last year, more than 36,500 peopleattended the show over four days, making itthe most successful PMV event since it firststarted five years ago, indicative of themarket’s recovery and exciting outlook.
“We have a few new things happening thisyear for PMV and MEC, both from theexhibitor’s side and from our side as well,”Waugh remarked.
The show has consistently grown in bothsize and number of participants, to more than
400 exhibitors and over 10,000 sq m in 2014,from 179 exhibitors and 5,424 sq m of floorspace in 2011.
And the numbers are expected to just keepgetting better. The number of internationalexhibitors has already exceeded expectations, with more participating than ever before, saidWaugh, while he expects the show to bringrecord-breaking numbers of visitors this year.
The organisers will be working withexhibitors to do more live demonstration. Forexample, “Laticrete, a major concretecompany based in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, willbe holding a live demonstration of itsSUPERCAP system, a new method of layingconcrete, in the Outdoor area at MEC,”noted Waugh.
Educational programmes were a hugesuccess in 2014, providing a range of topics, including the “How to trade in the UAE”seminar as well as 40 technical seminars ontopics such as infrastructure, fire and safety, and the Middle East rail sector.
For 2015, the educational programmes forPMV and MEC have been developed further, with more workshops and topics than everbefore.
