UCSB Student Resource Building : Schematic Design Report
A University represents a celebration of the congregation of cultures and backgrounds.
Boundaries dissolve allowing the free exchange of ideas and personal beliefs.

Piazza Navona, Rome
The earliest piazzas present themselves as a symbolic representation of this concept.
It provides a unique urban space that allows people to gather and exchange ideas.
8

Street Performer
A piazza’s function is constantly shifting from dawn to dusk.
No one moment is the same as the last.
It is dynamic.

9
UCSB Student Resource Building : Schematic Design Report
The proposed design will use light as a medium to not only provide a unique and dynamic urban environment like the piazzas of old, but also seeks to redefine the way an
individual experiences their physical and visual environment.

The North East Plaza provides a convening point from rest of the UCSB campus into the Student Resource Building. Combined with the weather of Southern California, it is envisioned to provide a comfortable outdoor environment for people to socialize.
It shall become a modern day interpretation of a piazza. Energy efficient fixtures will be utilized to adhere to California’s Title 24 requirements.
Interpretation
13
UCSB Student Resource Building : Schematic Design Report
The dynamic and transient nature of a piazza is analogous to water.
Water is formless, consistently shifting in shape and composition.

At the heart of the Student Resource Building is the Forum, an area that will become a major pedestrian thoroughfare that connects the adjacent neighborhood of Isla Vista and the rest of the UCSB campus.
The space serves a dual function: to facilitate movement as well as providing a comfortable and visually pleasing environment for people to socialize.
In response, the proposed design shall reinforce these two principles.
Interpretation
23
UCSB Student Resource Building : Schematic Design Report
The spatial relationship of the passerby and those who congregate in the Forum can be likened to this photo.
The earlier is transient, the later is almost timeless.
Likewise, the lighting here shall be used in such a way as to reinforce the dynamic nature of this space.

24
UCSB Student Resource Building : Schematic Design Report Interpretation
The movement of people through this space shall be analogous to stones skipping on water.
Therefore, specific surfaces shall be lit with an additional layer of light to guide people as they move from one end to the other.

UCSB Student Resource Building : Schematic Design Report Interpretation
Lighting here shall not only reinforce the architectural character of this space, but also provide a visual connection to the exterior of this building.
The design here will adhere to the energy requirements established in California’s Title 24 and be sensitive to the amount of daylight available.

Situated on the NE corner of the building, the Multi-purpose Room’s elliptical form resonates that of the adjacent North East Plaza.
As such, the design will aim to dissolve the boundary between the two areas.

Street Performer
From dawn to dusk, a piazza will constantly change as it adapts to the needs of different people throughout the day.
Likewise, the lighting design of the Multi-Purpose Room shall also be responsive to the different functions that will take place there during its lifetime.

Light shall be used to accentuate the architectural form of this space.
When the room is not in use, perimeter lighting here and that of the adjacent NE plaza shall change color in sequence to provide a visual connection between the two spaces.

Additional overhead lights will also be available to cater for conference type events.
Adjustable downlights will also be provided to allow for additional accent on vertical displays.
The design will observe Title 24 regulations and be responsive to the amount of daylight available.

The space serves to provide students with access to information related to university-wide activities as well as other campus related information.
Lighting will be designed in accordance to the functional needs of the space in addition to providing a comfortable and inviting environment for those that seek help.

UCSB Student Resource Building : Schematic Design Report Realization
Besides general ambient overhead illumination, lighting here shall provide a comfortable and relaxing environment.
Lights shall also be positioned as to avoid glare on the task plane.
Title 24 will be observed and appropriate controls will be utilized to ensure that the system is responsive to the amount of daylight available in the space.
