    1. Introduction

    The Techlog Link Ocean for Petrel plug-in provides the ability to exchange data

    directly between Petrel and Techlog, without the need to use third party

    applications. The Techlog Link plug-in is available on the Ocean Store and needs

    to be installed separately from the Petrel main platform.

    The ability to share interpretation data between the Petrophysicists and

    Geologists promotes a unified understanding of the reservoir by avoiding

    duplicate interpretations and increases dialog between the two communities.

    Additional benefits of this module include:

    Simplification of data transfer between the Petrel and Techlog platforms.

    Use of Petrel and Techlog API's ensures correct mapping of data between

    the applications and insulates customers from underlying changes to

    internal application data models.

    Extensible and flexible implementation, which provides scope for

    incorporation of additional data exchange items.

    Supported workflows:

    Importing data from Techlog to Petrel:

    o Wells, well trajectory, wellhead X & Y location

    o Logs: One-dimensional numerical log curves

    o Borehole image

    o Dip angle and dip azimuth interpretation results

    o Fluid contacts

    Exporting data from Petrel to Techlog:

    o Well tops

    o Petrel grid model segments and zone name (for Contacts import)

    3. Getting Started

    Launching Techog link plug-in

    The installed Techlog Link module is launched from the Processes window pane in

    Petrel, under the Techlog data exchange menu (see Figure 1). If the Techlog Link

    plug-in is not available in the Processes tab, please check that the Techlog Link

    plug-in has been installed and the appropriate licensing has been activated in the

    Schlumberger Licensing. Please check the installation documentation for further

    details.

    Connecting to a Techlog project

    Once the Techlog Link plug-in is launched, from the Import tab, the user can

    connect to their Techlog project by choosing the Open folder icon to the right of

    the Techlog project directory field (see Figure 2). In the new window pop-up,

    browse to locate the Techlog project folder, then select OK. This Techlog

    projects content will be listed in the Techlog Link plug-ins Project browser (see Figure 3). Once you exit the Techlog Link plug-in, then reenter the Techlog Link

    plug-in, the Techlog path isnt opened automatically. However, if you select the Open folder icon, the Techlog project path is persisted.

    Navigating the directory tree and selecting the desired Techlog project populates

    the Techlog Project browser tree window with the same Project browser data tree

    of wells, datasets and variable data as available in the Techlog project (see Figure

    4).

    4. Import Wells

    Open the Techlog Link (see Figure 1) and select a Techlog Project. Open the Wells

    mapping tab, it shows the list of wells in the Techlog project, and either a well

    with a matching name in the Petrel project, or the option. In the

    later case, when the user wants to import data from that well, the well will be

    imported automatically. The user can also choose to Ignore that well, or map to

    a different well (see Figure 5).

    The user can import one or several wells directly by selecting them in the Techlog

    links project browser. Hold down the Ctrl key for selecting multiple items, and the Shift key for selecting a range of items in the project tree, then click on the

    Import button.

    The location of the created well head is based on the X, Y and Elevation

    properties of the Techlog well. The trajectory information (MD, hole deviation,

    hole azimuth) will be imported primarily from the Trajectory dataset indicated in

    the Imports Settings tab. The default trajectory dataset is set to Index, but this can be changed by the user (see Figure 6). The algorithm starts in this dataset

    and looks for variables that have families Hole Deviation and Hole Azimuth. If a

    match by family is not found, other datasets are checked for these families, then

    the variable names containing string INC for inclination, and AZI for azimuth is searched.

    If some of the location or trajectory information is missing, a well will still be

    created in Petrel, with a default location and vertical trajectory. Refer to the

    Petrel message log for more details.

    5. Import Logs

    Open the Techlog Link and select the Techlog Project to view the Techlog project

    browser. Expand a well node, then expand a dataset node to see the variable logs

    available to import from the Techlog project to the Petrel project. Selecting a

    dataset will transfer all logs in the dataset. Or, the user can select individual logs

    in a dataset for import by using Ctrl key as the logs are selected in the Project

    browser. The variable logs selected for transfer are located on the Import tabs Log mapping tab. Go to the Log mapping tab to verify the Techlog family to

    Petrel template pairing for the log variables set to be imported. Each logs template pairing and Global Well Log should be verified and set appropriately (see

    Figure 7).

    The default mapping between log names and property templates is the one also

    used by Petrels LAS import function which is controlled by the xml file, LogNamesToPropertyTypeCatalog.xml. If the Log name is known, either through

    this mapping file, or if a global well log already exists in the Petrel project, then

    the corresponding Property template is shown, and the Global well log is set to

    that existing log, or to . The data transfer transfers the data value

    but does not do a unit conversion. The unit of measurement assigned to both the

    Techlog and Petrel log variable are listed in the Log mapping tab.

    Note that only 1D, numerical, measured-depth indexed logs are supported for

    import. Facies data can be imported with the Property template General Integer,

    then displayed with block styling in Petrels Well Section Window. For unmapped logs, the property template is defaulted to General and Global well log to

    .

    The Data view tab will display the log variables data values. When a dataset is selected, all log variables data values are displayed on this Data view tab. Note that the data is displayed in several pages. Use the controls at the bottom of the

    Data view window to go to a specific section of the log data. If more than one

    dataset is selected with Ctrl key, only the most recently selected datasets data is displayed. If more than one single log variable is chosen with Ctrl key, only the

    most recently selected log variables data is displayed.

    Once the object selection is done and both well and log mappings are confirmed,

    select the Import button on the lower left corner of the Techlog Link main window

    (see Figure 7). The settings on this Log mapping tab and the overwrite or splice

    choice in the Settings will dictate if the imported wells will newly be created,

    overwritten, or spliced upon import into Techlog.

    Create a filter

    If there is data common in several wells needs to be imported, the Create a filter

    and Create conditional selection features might be helpful. They each have a

    specific use and can be used independently from each other.

    The Create a filter feature will filter the Project browsers well list to only include similarly selected data. The filtering applies to both datasets and individual

    variable logs. For example, if the user selects LQC dataset, then Create filter (see

    Figure 8), the well list will filter down to only show wells that contain a dataset

    named LQC (see Figure 9). Notice how the background of the Project browser

    window turns to a light yellow shade. To disable the filter, right click in the

    Project browser window and select Remove the current filter. Notice how the

    background color goes back to white.

    Create conditional selection

    The Create conditional selection feature will highlight all data similar to the

    current data selection. The conditional selection feature works both with datasets

    and individual variable logs. This feature can work with a filter active or

    independent of an active filter, but the results will be different according to the

    active well list. For example, if I expand the two filtered wells C1 and C2, both

    LQC datasets have many variable logs. From the C1 wells LQC dataset, if I hold down Ctrl key & select GR, POR, and SW, then choose to Create conditional

    selection (see Figure 10), all listed wells that have GR, POR, or SW will expand

    respective datasets and highlight these logs (see Figure 11). This automatic

    multi-selection makes the data selection efficient for the user. Conversely, if all

    wells were listed in the Project browser and no filter was applied, when I choose

    GR, POR, and SW logs, then Create conditional selection, all listed wells that have

    GR, POR, or SW will expand respective datasets and these logs would be

    highlighted.

    These newly imported well logs have been created in the Petrel Input tabs data tree (see Figure 12).

    Splicing logs upon Import

    When you are importing a log that is paired to a Global Well Log that already

    exists for a well, the user has a choice to Overwrite or Splice the new log with the

    existing well log. The selection choice is on the Imports Settings tab (see Figure 13). When the user chooses to Splice the new log with the existing well log, the

    splice point will be at the imported datas top reference depth.

    6. Import Wellbore Images

    The Techlog Link plug-in can import raster borehole images that have been

    created in Techlog directly from the image data file. In the Techlog project, the

    user had to create a Raster image conversion from the processed image array.

    This is done inside Techlog by selecting the borehole image matrix array, then

    right-clicking and choosing Raster image conversion. The resulting borehole

    image dataset is the object that can be imported from Techlog to Petrel using the

    Techlog Link plug-in.

    After selecting (highlighting) the desired borehole image dataset in the Techlog

    project tree, open the Image view tab to look at the image. The vertical scroll bar

    on the right hand side of this Image view tab enables visualization of the entire

    borehole image (see Figure 14). Once confirming the Well mapping tab settings,

    select Import in the lower-left corner of the Techlog Link main window to import

    the image picture file directly to Petrel.

    Displaying images in Petrels Well Section Window

    Once the new image file has been imported directly into the Petrel active project,

    a new Global Well Log will be created. In order to display the image in Petrels Well Section Window, simply toggle on the Well and the images Global Well Log from Petrels Input panel. After a few seconds, the borehole image will appear in the Well Section Window in a separate track for the appropriate well (see Figure

    15).

    The geology image file is imported from Techlog as a Petrel bitmap image file.

    This imported image is a concatenation of multiple images. The default display

    setting for bitmap images in a Well Section Windows track is to display each images boundary as a horizontal line. These boundary lines are by default displayed in red. When an imported image is displayed in Petrels Well Section Window on a condensed scale, the red boundary lines might dominate the display

    at this scale (see Figure 16). The image can be seen once the well is rescaled.

    Or these image boundary lines can be turned off (see Figure 17).

    To turn off the image boundary lines in the Petrel Well Section Window track, go

    to the active Well Section display template. On the template tab, right click on

    the active display template and choose Settings (see Figure 17). On the Well

    Section template tab, select the bitmap image node and select its Style tab. To

    remove the red image boundary lines, uncheck the box next to Show, then apply

    the changes.

    7. Import Dip Interpretation Logs

    The Techlog Link plug-in can import dip angle and dip azimuth results. The dip

    dataset(s) need to be located in a Group in order to properly import. And the

    name of the dips Group name must be correctly indicated on the Imports Settings tab in the Dips group name field.

    The Techlog project can transfer one or several different dip datasets, but only

    the dip angle and dip azimuth will be transferred per dip dataset.

    For example, in the example below, well C1 has three separate dip datasets. In

    the original Techlog project, the three dip datasets were placed in a Group called

    Final_Dip. The Techlog Link Imports Settings tab has the Dips group name field correctly set to match the Group name Final_Dip (see Figure 18). With this

    setup, the user can either select the Group to move the dip angle and dip azimuth

    of all three datasets. Or, the user can select each dataset + the Ctrl key to select

    multiple datasets to import. Alternatively, the user can select a single data set to

    move only that datasets dip results. The default Dip group name on the Settings tab is Final_Dip, but this name can be changed to match which group of importing

    dip results.

    After selecting (highlighting) either the whole Final_Dip group or one of its

    individual datasets, confirm the settings on the Well mapping and Log mapping

    tabs. The true dip angle should be mapped to Petrel template Dip angle. The

    true dip azimuth should be mapped to Petrel template Dip azimuth. If these

    Global well logs do not already exist, choose the option to .

    on the Well mapping tab, then select Import to import the dip results.

    The dip angle and dip azimuth logs can then be displayed in Petrels Well Section Window as tadpoles or in a polar frequency plot (see Figure 19).

    8. Export Well Tops, Model Segments and Zones

    The Techlog Link plug-in can export well tops from the active Petrel project to a

    Techlog project. On the Export tab, choose the open folder icon to browse and

    select the export Techlog project directory (see Figure 20). The project directory

    is the same as listed on the Import tab, but the user can browse and select a

    different export Techlog project.

    Select the Wells folder or an individual Well in Petrels Input tab, then select the blue arrow on this Export tab to move them to the Well(s) field on this Export

    tab. Inserting a Well tops set is optional. To narrow down the exported well tops

    set to a specific Well Tops container, select that Well Tops container in the Petrel

    Input tab, then select the blue arrow on this Export tab to move them to the Well

    tops set field on this Export tab (see Figure 20).

    Inserting a Model Pillar Grid is also optional. Providing the model pillar grid

    enables the Well Tops export to also include the Petrel grid models segments and zones which will be contained in additional fault block and zone variable

    properties. Techlogs Fluid Code analysis module will need to use this imported Well Tops set, along with its additional grid model segments and zones

    information, to compute fluid contacts. The resulting Techlog contacts will then

    contain the appropriate hydraulic zone information required to import the

    Contacts back to Petrel.

    Users are then given the opportunity to insert a Techlog dataset name prefix for

    the exported Well tops set. The default dataset prefix is PETREL (see Figure 20).

    This creates a Techlog interval dataset type named PETREL_Tops for each

    transferred well, but this prefix can be changed as needed. Check the box next

    to Overwrite the existing dataset to overwrite that specific well tops dataset for a

    well. The red and green arrows in the bottom left corner of the Data view window

    will expand and collapse the well tops listing.

    On the same Export tab, select the Wells Mapping tab to assign well pairing

    between the active Petrel project and the Techlog project. Techlog well mapping

    allows the selection of existing wells or ignoring wells that do not need to be

    transferred. The green and brown tree icon in the lower left of the display

    provides auto mapping functionality that matches Petrel well names to Techlog

    well names (see Figure 21). The red X ignore all icon sets all wells to ignore.

    Desired wells to be transferred can then be mapped individually. This is useful

    when the user wants to only to transfer a few wells from a long list.

    When ready to export the well tops information, select the Export Icon. Upon

    completion, the user will receive a message stating Well tops export complete. Do you want to reload the Techlog project in the Project browser on the Import tab? (see Figure 22). If the user chooses Yes, the Techlog project will be reloaded as seen in the Project browser of the Techlog Links Import tab.

    If the Techlog project was open in the Techlog application, the user will need to

    reload the well or perform a partial load for the newly exported datasets from the

    Techlog platforms Project browser.

    Providing the model pillar grid enables the Well Tops export to also include the

    Petrel grid models segments and zones which will be contained in additional fault block and zone variable properties. Techlogs Fluid Code analysis module can use this imported Well Tops set, that includes the additional grid model segments and

    zones information, to compute fluid contacts. The resulting Techlog contacts will

    then contain the appropriate hydraulic zone information required to import the

    Contacts back to Petrel.

    9. Import Fluid Contacts

    After successful import of Petrel well tops that include information about the grid

    model segments and zones, these well tops can be used to compute Techlog fluid

    contacts that will map to these Petrel segments and zones. Techlogs Fluid Code analysis module can use this imported Well Tops set, that includes the additional

    grid model segments and zones information, to compute fluid contacts. The

    resulting Techlog contacts will then contain the appropriate hydraulic zone

    information required to import the Contacts back to Petrel.

    To transfer Fluid Contacts to Petrel, open the Techlog Link and select the desired

    project (see Figure 2). From the Project browser, select the Contact dataset to

    import (see Figure 23). The contact details can be viewed in the Data view tab.

    In order to import Fluid Contacts back to Petrel, the user must also map the

    correct receiving Petrel grid model on the Imports Settings tab (see Figure 24). Once the Petrel grid model has been specified, click on the Import button to

    import the contacts to Petrel.

    Expand the Petrel grid model located on the Models tab. Under the Fluid

    contacts, a new contact set named TL_Contacts has been created (see Figure 25).

    The Petrel process Make Contacts located in the Corner point gridding processes

    can enable visualization of the imported fluid contacts by zone and segment (see

    Figure 26). These newly imported contacts can then be displayed or used as any

    native Petrel contact set, including volumetric calculations. In this example, an

    oil-water-contact (OWC) for the zone Ness-2 has been defined for several

    segments.
