1. Make sure driver’s are healthy and well rested

2. Have written policies related to safe driving and enforce them

• Include policies for mobile phone and tablet usage

3. Use policy, incentives, and technology to encourage driving that uses less fuel

• More economic driving is positively correlated to safe driving

4. Use driving facing camera systems on at least an audit and training basis

5. Choose vehicles with dashboards that are simple with controls within reach

• Get rid of useless gauges and switches. Does it have a mounting for a mobile

phone?

• Consider the hanging cords for CB radios

• Power outlets should be placed to minimize cords dangling and interference with

beverage cups

6. Select fleet management systems carefully

• Consider integrated Electronic Logging Device capability

• Ask supplier for human factors usability testing

• Consider integrated driver behavior algorithms for safe and fuel efficient driving

• Ask if the fleet management system is integrated with the vehicle’s instrument

cluster
