Its not about not using but about using properly....October 24th being observed as the International Climate Change Day, may have brought some effect on the concern towards the environment of the planet. The emphasis of this day was to make aware the people about all the hazards the environment and the planet is facing in today's time. The Carbon Content has gone to a mind boggling 383ppm, just 70 less than the max the human race can bear to sustain. The scientists in this concern have their view that the planet's carbon content is the most that the human race has ever witnessed and its going to increase at even more rapid race. The question in every concerned mind is that what can one do to avoid such a catastrophic crisis the climate is suffering from. Many think it is due to all the industrialization and developments being done in the near past which is still going on. But on the contrary one cannot just throw away all the facilities and conviniencies to just think about the planet's climate. All this progress and development man has taken centuries to evolve cannot be just simply forsaken. The man cannot leave all this comfortability and still wants proper environment, food, no climate disorder, to speak in a small way. But how can one expect to get the present scenario under control, if the man cannot get rid of his zidd of not giving up all this. A new and innovative way, the Proper Managing Way(PMW), as I like to call it may help in solving this issue. Its not about changing anything or using new technology, or employing some rules. Its just a change in the habitual orders and mindset of the humans. No need to leave any luxury or facility, though can't be. But the only work needed is to use 'em in a proper manner, just like respecting the luxuries as they respect us. PMW's squeeze is to use everything but properly, without the action of letting the utilizable amount go to waste. Everything has a counterpart, an alternative which may be better or worse in some respect. Look at Google, whose reputation in the internet market is well-known. Google has a search engine which is as efficient as google but more energy saving as google. Its whole interface is in black, cause black is no colour which consumes the least energy, that's why its being named as Blackle. By this, Google has not only taken a so-called environmental step but also made clear about its view about the rapid climate change. Take a look to the sky, just before you die coz its the last time you will... will be the lines to be spoken if action towards the problem is not taken. This climatic blitzkrieg will surely take the human race into its vice grip and make each human, whether concerned or not will be its victim. Save ourselves before the earth bleeds... coz this bleeding will make all the humans bleed for their actions and the suffering of the climate and planet. All the hurricanes, Tsunamis speak for themselves, need not be explained. Its not about not using but about using properly all the resources, just as before, to respect the planet for all it has given to us.

Tejaswi Khanna Editor(3rd Year CSE) Every firm is investing heavily in the green technologies, which are closer to the environment. It were them in the first place to spoil the picture now they've taken responsibility to repent and mend their ways. Intel is researching towards the technology of tomorrow which is well efficient and energy saving as well. Moreover, the car manufacturers ain't leaving their business but are researching in cheap and ecofriendly technologies so that every man can have his hands in the mending of climatic crisis, which were once helping it.They have now come to realize about not just development but sustainable development. Actions to be taken need to be in rapid succession and tough in implementation. PMW may actually quite a step if everybody inculcates in him the better way of living and managing resources. Its just like what an MBA does in a firm, an MBA of environment. Utilizing optimally with the least possible resources in a proper way to see our new and younger generations enjoy the fruits of the planet just as we did.

Google Fixes Two Android DoS BugsGoogle released patches repairing two security flaws in its Android mobile operating system, which enabled hackers to launch denial of service attacks on users' smartphones. The flaws, made public by the Open Source Computer Emergency Response Team (oCERT), affected Android version 1.5. One of the most serious security vulnerabilities occurs in the way Android handles SMS messages. Hackers can create malformed SMS message from a badly formatted WAP Push message, which, in turn, could trigger a mobile phone to disconnect from the cellular network, oCERT reports in a security advisory.

Altogether, the Google Android OS is the driving force behind nine devices with 32 carriers in 26 countries, according to The Wall Street Journal. While the Android has made clear strides on the consumer front, its steady emergence as a viable enterprise platform has also made it an increasingly attractive target for hackers.

Then it improved and broadened its use the technology in the 2010 Mustang."In 2010, we added an even better execution of footwells and cup holders," Gelardi says. "Then we did the rear-seat area, map pockets, and the coolest part: the sill plates."Indeed, the Mustang sill plate is likely to be popular among Mustang owners and enthusiasts. The feature borrows from the iconic, embossed aluminum sill plates long used in Mustangs, and then adds LED lighting to illuminate the sill's Mustang logo, so it can be seen at night.

EcoCAR Challenge Throttles into Year TwoModel-Based Design around verification and testing is next stage of the advanced automotive engineering competition Seventeen university teams are heading into the next stage of the three-year EcoCAR: the NeXt Challenge automotive engineering competition, convening in Boston this week for additional training designed to prepare them for the validation and testing work that comes with year two. The competition, established by the United States Dept. of Energy (DOE) and General Motors and managed by the Argonne National Lab., challenges university teams in North America to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles while retaining performance and safety standards and without sacrificing consumer appeal. The teams are charged with reengineering a donated 2009 Saturn Vue to explore advanced propulsion and clean vehicle solutions, including full-function electric, range-extended electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell technologies. The students have to comply with real-world engineering processes to design and integrate their advanced technology designs and they are also working to incorporate lightweight materials to improve aerodynamics and to utilize alternative fuels such as ethanol, biodiesel and hydrogen. To that end, the teams are settling into year two of the competition, focused on the testing and validation stage of their designs. While model-Based Design tools such as SimuLink from The MathWorks and others from National Instruments were used the first year to create the engine components, the tools will now play a role in optimizing and testing the design parameters and the control software prior to the build stage where the teams create near-production-ready components. Model-Based Design is important to the competition and design teams, in general because it allows engineers to test a variety of scenarios quickly before launching into the more costly and time-consuming physical implementation. "While the technologies that go into the vehicles are

definitely cutting edge, we don't think one of these vehicles is going to change the world or outperform GM," says Mike Walstrum, control and simulation engineer at the Argonne National Lab. "We're trying to acclimate students to the real-world environment. Our goal is to develop engineers of the future who can really hit the ground running and start their careers off by developing environmentally friendly automotive applications."

Chemists Win Nobel Prize for Atom-byAtom Ribosome MapRounding out the 2009 science Nobel Prizes are Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas A. Steitz, and Ada E. Yonath, who will receive the prize in chemistry for their work on an atomic-scale map of the ribosome. Ribosomes are the cellular organelle responsible for assembling amino acids into proteins. If DNA is the blueprint, ribosomes are the construction workers. Ribosomes themselves are composed of a combination of RNA and specialized proteins. The process of examining ribosomes at the finest possible resolution began over thirty years ago, when Ada Yonath first attempted to use X-rays to photograph a crystallized ribosome. Yonath's results threw down the gauntlet to the rest of the scientific community, and scientists like Steitz and Ramakrishnan soon joined in the race to describe the organelle at smaller and smaller scales. Eventually, the work of everyone in the field produced a working model of the ribosome at the atomic level. Understanding ribosomes has important implications in the health field, as many antibiotics kill bacteria by targeting the ribosome. The laureates' work also produced ancillary benefits for other fields, as the X-ray crystallography they perfected while examining ribosomes can be applied to the imaging of other tiny, biological elements.

Nobel In Physics: In 1966, Charles K. Kao made a discovery that led to a breakthrough in fiber optics. He carefully calculated how to Creators Of Optical transmit light over long distances via optical glass fibers. a fiber of purest glass it would be possible to Fiber Communication Withsignals over 100 kilometers, compared to onlytransmit light 20 meters for the fibers available in the 1960s. Kaos And CCD Image enthusiasm inspired other researchers to share his vision of the future potential of fiber optics. The first ultrapure Sensor fiber was successfully fabricated just four years later, inThe Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2009 with one half to Charles K. Kao, Standard Telecommunication Laboratories, Harlow, UK, and Chinese University of Hong Kong for groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication, and the other half jointly to Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith, Bell 1970. Today optical fibers make up the circulatory system that nourishes our communication society. These low-loss glass fibers facilitate global broadband communication such as the Internet. Light flows in thin threads of glass, and it carries almost all of the telephony and data traffic in each and every direction. Text, music, images and video can be transferred around the globe in a split second. A large share of the traffic is made up of digital images, which constitute the second part of the award. In 1969 Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith invented the first successful imaging technology using a digital sensor, a CCD (Charge-Coupled Device). The CCD technology makes use of the photoelectric effect, as theorized by Albert Einstein and for which he was awarded the 1921 years Nobel Prize. By this effect, light is transformed into electric signals. The challenge when designing an image sensor was to gather and read out the signals in a large number of image points, pixels, in a short time. The CCD is the digital cameras electronic eye. It revolutionized photography, as light could now be captured electronically instead of on film. The digital form facilitates the processing and distribution of these images. CCD technology is also used in many medical applications, e.g. imaging the inside of the human body, both for diagnostics and for microsurgery. Digital photography has become an irreplaceable tool in many fields of research. The CCD has provided new possibilities to visualize the previously unseen. It has given us crystal clear images of distant places in our universe as well as the depths of the oceans.

SOLAR HATIf you are one of those people who thrive in the sun, someone who loves the feel of the sun and feels happier on sunny days, then you should also be aware of the dangers of the sun. We have all heard about the necessity of wearing sunscreen while you are out in the sunshine, to avoid skin damage; but there is another problem that is just as serious and much more immediate, sun stroke. When you are out in the sun, it is important to wear a hat if possible, because the top of the head can regulate your temperature. It is important that newly born babies have a cap to maintain their temperature, because they cannot maintain their body heat. And it is important that if the body is too warm, the top of the head be kept cool so that a heat stroke can be avoided. That is why it is advised that a hat be worn while gardening or working in the sun, and most of those hats have mesh or holes which can allow the heat to escape. And now there is a great product that can allow you to harness the power of the sun to actually keep you cool! Like most of us, you probably thought that solar energy was only used for large-scale items, such as heating and cooling buildings. While it is used for that purpose, it can also be used for smaller items, more personal items. And now, you can purchase a Solar Hat! This amazing

Portable and ink-free Printing:zink MONIKA MANN (CSE 3rd Yr. U.I.E.T.)

technology, stationary printing might become obsolete. Zink imaging has invented a portable printer that prints digital photographs without the use of a cartridge, thus simplifying the printing process and allowing you to print digital photographs anytime and anywhere. Zero ink printing or ZINK in short is a technology that has been researched and developed by ZINK Imaging. Pioneered by a group of scientists this awe inspiring technology provides an easy and convenient alternative to bulky printers and ink cartridges while maintaining high quality printing.

With major advancements in

due to which they take on different colors. This paper is typically made up of five layers. The first layer which is known as the Base layer consists of an adhesive substance in which these crystals are placed. The second layer is known as the Cyan Imaging layer which when affected by low temperature releases a cyan dye that is formed into the image. The third layer, which is the Magenta imaging layer releases a magenta dye but only when heated at a medium temperature. The Yellow imaging layer which is the fourth layer tends to release a yellow dye when heated at a high temperature. And last but not the least comes the Overcoat layer which protects the image from any sort of damage once it has been printed.

is that its pocket sized and portable. It has also proved to be eco-friendly as the paper is recyclable and doesnt contain any toxic type substance. Using advanced heat-reactive crystals impregnated into the paper, Zink allows you to produce durable, full-color,

high-resolution prints from printers so small they can literally fit in your pocket or be integrated into mobile imaging devices. Due to the nature of the print technology, size isn't an issue, and commercial Zink printers will be easily able to reel off banners and posters of any length. As for cost, Zink paper is expected to cost around 20 cents per small print upon its initial release already a very attractive price point but one that will surely come down with volume.~*~

Mechanism of Zero ink printingZINK uses a special paper with embedded dye crystals known as Amorphocromic crystals which stimulates into different colors on heating. These crystals respond differently to heat impulses of varying duration and intensities,

Outcome of Zero ink printingThe prints obtained from ZINK printers can produce millions of colors with accuracy. Though this technology is new, its known to give out vibrant and clean prints that are waterproof, durable and heatproof. The major advantage of using this printer

Touch Screens for Many Fingers MAMTA DABRA (CSE 3rd Yr. U.I.E.T.)

Researchers havebigger plans for multitouch screens than the novel interface on Apple's iPhone. When Steve Jobs demonstrated Apple's new phone at Macworld recently, the feature that elicited the most "oohs" and "aahs" from the audience was the touchscreen interface: it allowed more than one touch at a time. This

unleashed in screens far larger than those on phones. Over the past few years, Jeff Han, consulting research scientist at New York University, has developed an inexpensive way to make large multi-touch screens accommodating 10, 20, or even more fingers. He envisions applications ranging from interactive whiteboards to touchscreen tables and digital walls--any of which could be manipulated by more than just one person. Han has unveiled Perceptive Pixel, his new company based on the

screen "becomes interesting," he says, "because multiple users can then become collaborators." Such collaboration could take many forms, from brainstorming sessions using networked, interactive whiteboards to animation collaborations at which six hands can mould the face of a monster. Perceptive Pixel is set to ship its first wallsize touch screen to an undisclosed U.S. military customer.

"multi-touch" technology adds functions such as allowing a person to easily zoom in and out of pictures and Web pages by pinching the screen with two fingers. But the full power of multitouch technology might be38

technology. "The new iPhone is too small to be a very interesting multi-touch device," says Han, who demonstrates his technology on YouTube video. That's because multi-touch technology implies multiple users. More than one person gathered around a large touch ~*~

Windows 7Windows 7 (codenamed Blackcomb/Vienna), an Operating System from Microsoft released on October 22, 2009. This OS has been made to provide much friendly user interface. The all new taskbar gets all the press. It takes some ideas from Mac OS X dock like larger icons and application launcher. The quick launch has been replaced by pinning option in the taskbar. Reordering of taskbar buttons, show desktop on the right side (default), Aero Peek, Aero Snap, windows media player 12 are some included features in windows 7. The user interface has been significantly improved by providing a lot of options like 13 additional sound themes, multiple windows environments, wallpaper switching, jump list to allow easy access to most common tasks etc. Not only user interface and visuals, Windows 7 also has improved start-up time. The hardware requirements are almost same for 32 bit OS. For 64 bit versions, it requires 2 GB of RAM (1 GB

Google Chrome OS:Expected to be released in the second half of 2010, the beta version has already been out based on SUSE Linux. Google Chrome OS will be open source and free OS. It will be light weight, based on Chrome web browser targeted towards net books. It is based on Linux kernel. Its code will be open sourced later this year. It has its own windowing system as opposed to X Window System which is standard windowing system for Linux platform. The user interface is minimal, as most experience takes place on the cloud. It is being created for the people who spend most of their time on the cloud. Its underlying architecture is completely redesigned in order to improve security, so that users dont have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates.

OS X Snow Leopard:Released on August 28, 2009, the 64bit Snowy is available as an upgrade from OS X Leopard. All the built in applications are 64 bit, but the OS has backward compatibility for 32 bit applications as well. For visuals, theres not much difference but a few refinements from its previous version. Dock Expose simply links Expose to the Dock as expected. But Snow Leopard is more secure as its 64 bit applications use more advanced security techniques to fend off malicious code, using function argument passing mechanism. With the introduction of GCD (Grand Central Dispatch) technology, OS X fully utilises the multi-core processors by distributing the work over all available cores, resulting in the improvement of performance and computing capabilities of the processors. OpenCL (Open Computing Language) is a c based programming language that utilizes the power of GPUs and makes them available for general purpose computing. Wireless Network Modded to See Through Walls ARNIKA GARG (CSE 3rd Yr. U.I.E.T.)

The way signal strengthvaries in a wireless network can reveal what's going on behind closed doors. It's everybodys dream: an easy way of looking through walls to spy on neighbors, monitor siblings, and keep tabs on the sweet jar. And now a dream no longer.. Researchers at the University of Utah say that the way radio signals vary in a wireless network can reveal the movement of people behind closed doors. A technique called variance-based radio tomographic imaging that processes the signals to reveal signs of movement, is developed. The idea is tested with a 34-node wireless network using the IEEE 802.15.4 wireless protocol. The basic idea is that the signal strength at any point in a network is the sum of all the paths the radio waves can take to get to the receiver. Any change in the volume of space through which the signals pass, for example caused by the movement of a person, makes the signal strength vary. So by "interrogating" this volume of space with many signals, picked up

by multiple receivers, it is possible to build up a picture of the movement within it. And the test is able to locate moving objects in the room to within a meter or so. That's not bad, and the team says there is ample potential for improvement by increasing accuracy while reducing the number of nodes. The advantage of this technique over others is, first, its cost. The nodes in such a network are off-the-shelf and therefore cheap. Other throughwall viewing systems cost in excess of $100,000. The second advantage is the ease with which it can be set up.

immediately form a network and self-localize, perhaps using information about the size and shape of the building from a database (eg Google maps) and some known-location coordinates (eg using GPS). Then, nodes begin to transmit, making signal strength measurements on links which cross the building or area of interest. The received signal strength measurements of each link are transmitted back to a base station and used to estimate the positions of moving people and objects within the building." That's ambitious, but if they do get their system to the point where it can be used like this, it raises another problem: privacy. Of course, in the cat-and-mouse game of surveillance, it shouldn't be too hard to build a device that disables such a monitoring network. ~*~

Project in a viewA building imaging scenario is envisioned similar to the following. Emergency responders, military forces, or police arrive at a scene where entry into a building is potentially dangerous. Radio sensors around (and potentially on top of) the building area are deployed, either by throwing or launching them, or dropping them while moving around the building. The nodes

Electronic Evolution: Research Show Robots Forming Human-like Societies ASEEM BANSAL (Bio.Tech 2nd Yr. U.I.E.T.)

A lone group of Swiss scientistshave been using scattered LEDs, neural circuitry, and an army of miniature robots to explore the very basis of good and evil. No, you arent reading the back cover of a DVD in the one dollar each, please get this trash out of our store bin of your local blockbusterthis research is very real and very, very awesome. Dario Floreano and his team at Laboratory of Intelligent Systems in the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology built a swarm of mobile robots, outfitted with light bulbs and photodetectors. These were set loose in a zone with illuminated food and poison zones which charged or depleted their batteries. Their programming was initially random, so the first generation staggered around the place like bunch of concussed pipes. At intervals, the robots were

shut down and those that had the most charge left in their batteries were chosen as successful, and their neural programming was combined to produce the next generation of the robots. These offspring are downloaded into the same mechanical bodies their parents

cheats and martyrs. Transistorized traitors emerged which wrongly identified poison zone as food ,luring their trusting brethren to their doom before scooting off to silently charge in a food zone presumably while using a mechanical claw to twirl a silicon carving of a handlebar moustache. You might be upset by this result, scientific proof that who say Evil is utterly fundamental to human nature actually understates the scope of the problem, there were also silicon souls of the angels. Some robots advanced fearlessly into the poison zone, flashing warning lights to keep other robots out of harms way. At this rate of evolution, how long we start to see other behaviours? Maybe polarized priests, warning other robots not to eat any food so that they may receive infinite food after theyre switched off .Or actorbot, given huge quantities of food because they can pretend to be turned off by poison really well?~*~

inhabitated , forming an closedcircuit Buddhist system which might be an extremely efficient method of maintaining a stable population ,but will provide a serious headache for any robot philosophers who might turn up. Which could happen before long? Within fifty generations of this electronic evaluation, cooperative societies of robots had formed-helping each other to find food and avoid poison. Even more amazing is the emergence of

However, hybrid cars are not mass-produced as their production costs are still relatively high. A researcher from ETH Zurich has now developed a new concept as part of her doctoral thesis that integrates power electronic functions and an electric motor, which could reduce the costs of producing hybrid cars. Ever since Hollywood stars like Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz began to drive up to the red carpet in their hybrid cars, hybrids have become increasingly interesting to the conventional car market. As the public climate debate continues, hybrid cars with a combination of a combustion engine and an electric motor have increasingly become the focus of research projects.

The production of hybrid drives is still very expensive. This begs the question as to how hybrid vehicles can be constructed more cost-effectively. A substantial proportion of the costs is swallowed up by the electric motor and the power electronic energy management system, in which inverters and DC/DC converters play a crucial role. In this approach the power electronics and the electric motor perform several functions simultaneously. The multiple use of the electronic parts and the motor also saves volume. Combination with motor has its advantages In conventional hybrid vehicles, batteries not only power the electric motor, but also the radio, ventilation and the lights. Unlike the electrical drive system, for which a high DC voltage of 200 600 V has to be converted into a three-phase AC voltage, a low DC voltage Tech-Nattyam | Volume 1.0

of 12 V is sufficient to power a car radio. Inverters, which convert the direct current into an alternating current, and DC/DC converters, which transfer the power between the two batteries for the two voltage levels, are therefore important power electronic components in hybrid or electric vehicles. For current hybrid vehicles, these converters are located outside the electric motor. A system developed integrates the inverter, the DC/DC converter and the electric motor functionally; condenses the functions of the drive and the DC/DC converter in combination, therefore certain electronic components and the motor lamination stack can be shared. Large quantities of such functionally integrated systems will be cheaper as fewer raw materials are needed. ~*~

Designing Tools for Space NITIN BANSAL (CSE 3rd Yr. U.I.E.T.)

Engineering Tools to be used in Zerog EnvironmentAstronauts have to use specially designed tools when working in space. When NASA astronauts embarked on Servicing Mission 4 to the Hubble Space Telescope in May 2009, they brought with them a variety of specialized tools to perform the servicing operations in a zero-g, vacuum environment.

Types of Space ToolsThere are three types of tools used by astronauts both inside of the Shuttle and the ISS, as well as outside: Crew Aids hand rails, foot restraints, tether devices. These are generally passive devices that help astronauts maneuver and brace themselves as they work both inside and outside of crew spaces. However, the ISS has a 200-foot network of rail lines with cable-driven controls integrated into the truss design to serve as transportation for astronauts and equipment. Hand Tools These manual tools help

astronauts perform tasks that are difficult to perform while wearing gloves. Some hand tools include a washer extraction tool, fastener capture plates, and specialized fixturing. Power Tools - The primary power tool used by astronauts is a pistolgrip tool, similar to a cordless drill. This version is designed to rotate at about 15 RPM. A specialized mini pistol-grip tool was developed for the Hubble Servicing Mission that had a faster rate, about 210 RPM, to allow astronauts to remove the many screws on the telescope components quickly.

requirements for tools for space operation include: A minimal tool weight so as to not impact total vehicle weight Cannot cause tears or cuts Must be operational in temperatures from -150F to +150F Must be operational in a vacuum environment Must be operational while wearing pressurized gloves Must be able to withstand launch forces and vibrations

Where are Space Tools Designed? The tools for the Hubble Space Telescope repair missions were developed by the Hubble Space Telescope Extravehicular Activity Team at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. Goddard is the center for the development and testing of tools and devices for all NASA operations. Astronauts rely heavily on the functionality and quality of their tools and devices while operating in space. Engineers provide a significant service in ensuring these tools meet the needs of the astronauts. ~*~SOURCE: NASA WEBSITE

The way advertising works is through a positive feedback loop, where the bigger you get, the better you get. Next important question is that even if the combined forces of Microsoft and Yahoo build a search engine that's 10 times better than Google's, will it matter?

The difficulty lies in the fact that user behavior is a tough nut to crack.
