02 THE TECTITE PUSH-FIT SYSTEM

At Yorkshire Fittings we are constantly strivingto develop jointing solutions that meet thechanging needs of specifiers and installers alike. With the Tectite range of metal push-fit fittings,we’ve made jointing easier, faster and more costeffective than ever before.

Total system solutionsThe Tectite system range features: Tectite Sprintand Tectite Classic fittings (for copper tube and PEXand PB pipe), Tectite Pro fittings (for copper tube)and Tectite 316 stainless steel fittings and stainlesssteel 316 System tube. The range also includesTectite-PEX barrier pipe (for use with Tectite Sprintand Tectite Classic fittings) and is complementedfurther by valves accessories.

Ideal for use in sectors as diverse as domesticmaintenance and refurbishment, new build andlarge scale public sector projects, Tectite also excelsas a second fix product on commercial installations.

The principle of the Tectite jointTectite fittings simply push together in seconds tocreate a perfect joint. No blow torches, no solder,no heavy or expensive tools.

Tectite Classic, Tectite Pro and Tectite 316 fittingscan be demounted through the use of a simpledemounting tool and subsequently re-used.

Advantages of TectiteThe heat-free principle of the jointing process isone of the major benefits of the Tectite system, removing the need to apply for hot work permitsthat often boost insurance premiums; andeliminating the possibility of flame damage.

Together with the XPress System of press-fitfittings, Tectite offers the system designer a choiceof heat-free jointing methods, resulting in anuncontaminated installation fitted in a fraction ofthe time taken using other jointing techniques.

A primary concern for the installer is the amount oftime spent fitting and commissioning plumbing andheating services. With the Tectite range, the timetaken to joint tubes in sizes up to 54mm issignificantly reduced. The jointing process is simpleand tube preparation requires no more than theapplication of a good plumbing practice, contributing further to installed cost savings.

Tectite fittings are intrinsically clean, meaning noallowance for adhesive curing or long flushingtimes to remove flux residue is required.

Choose Tectite and you avoid the need to purchaseand store gases, adhesives, fluxes, solders or anyother materials or equipment.

Presenting the Tectite rangeThe comprehensive range of Tectite jointing solutionsincludes push-fit line fittings, Tectite-PEX pipe and316 Stainless steel System tube, flexible connectors,quarter-turn ball valves and service valves. All areprecision-made either in copper, gunmetal, A-metal,DZR brass or stainless steel. That’s in addition to awide selection of accessories to assist in thecompletion a first class job.

Tectite Sprint fittings are manufactured from copper ormachined DZR brass and are ideal for the fast, efficient jointing of copper tube to BS EN 1057, orPB and PEX plastic pipe to BS 7291 Parts 2 and 3.Tectite Sprint fittings are available in sizes from10mm to 28mm and are designed for use on hotand cold water services, heating and chilled waterapplications and low temperature hot waterservices. It’s extremely low profile design makesTectite Sprint a visually appealing product, with theadded advantage of being easy to insulate, allowingit to be installed more easily in confined spaceswhich could be difficult to reach using other typesof fittings.

Introducing the Tectite range

Page 4: Tec Tite

For convenience the Tectite range incorporatestwo pipe/tube options – Tectite PEX barrier pipeand stainless steel 316 System tube. In addition, selected Tectite ranges are compatible withXPress Carbon steel system tube.

Tectite-PEX barrier pipeTectite-PEX is a high-integrity cross-linkedpolyethylene barrier pipe. Available in sizes from10mm to 28mm in 3m and 6m straight lengths or25m, 50m and 100m coils, it is suitable for usewith Tectite Sprint and Tectite Classic fittings.

At the heart of Tectite-PEX is an EVOH (ethylenevinyl alcohol) resin oxygen barrier found centrallywithin the pipe wall. This barrier inhibits theingress of oxygen – vital in central heatingapplications where permeation of oxygen into thesystem can cause radiator corrosion.

Easy to use, easy to live withTectite-PEX is flexible enough to be cabled aroundobstructions and through joists with ease, savingon time and materials. The product’s flexibility alsoallows it to absorb energy and so reduce noise fromwater hammer and thermal movement.

The pipe’s low thermal conductivity means exposedpipework in central heating systems is cooler to thetouch than other materials. It is resistant tolimescale and all-but eliminates the threat of burstpipes in cold conditions.

Lightweight and convenient to handle and store,Tectite-PEX can be painted with either emulsion oroil-based gloss paints (NOT cellulose paint). Caremust be taken to ensure that no paint comes intocontact with Tectite fittings.

InstallationWhen installing Tectite-PEX, always remember toobserve minimum bend radii to avoid kinking of thepipe. The Tectite accessories range includes a bendformer for tight bends.

To fix the pipe in place, simply use the specialclips and/or bend formers.

Stainless steel 316 System tubeSpecially designed to be used with Tectite 316

stainless steel fittings, 316 System tube is available

in 6m straight lengths in sizes from 15mm to

The Tectite jointing system has been designedwith easy, efficient installation in mind.

Guide to installation – 10mm to 28mmThe jointing procedures are almost identical for everytype of Tectite fitting and compatible tube material.Where there are variations (such as inserting aliner into a PEX pipe) full details are provided inthe instructions.

To ensure the fittings stay clean and the ‘O’ ring isprotected from damage, never remove the fitting fromits packaging until immediately prior to installation.

Preliminaries1. Select the correct size of tube or pipe and fittingfor the job. Ensure both are clean, in goodcondition and free from damage, scores andimperfections. Do not use any additional lubricantor sealing compounds.

For metal tubes, cut the tube square using a rotarytube cutter wherever possible, and for plastic pipeuse pipe shears. Take care to ensure that the tubeend is cut square, deburred and chamfered. If thetube is oval or damaged, use a re-rounding tool.

2. Remove any burrs or sharp edges from the externaltube end using either the T110 3-in-1 Tectitedeburring, scribe tool and socket depth marker (notsuitable for use with Tectite Sprint), or the S120deburring tool from the XPress accessories range. Also, ensure the internal bore is deburred. Now wipeclean the tube end to remove all swarf and debris –this helps to avoid damage to the ‘O’ ring wheninserting the tube.

3. Where Tectite-PEX barrier pipe is used, removethe label from the pipe end. If the pipe has beenused on a previous installation, cut the tube backto behind the teeth marks, ensuring there are noscore marks on the pipe. Also ensure the correctlysized T66 pipe support liner from the Tectiteaccessories range is fully inserted into the pipe. If 10mm R220 annealed copper tube is being used, ensure a T67 support liner is fully inserted intothe tube.

4. To make a perfect joint, the tube or pipe mustbe fully inserted in the fitting until it meets thetube stop. To confirm that this is the case, markthe socket depth on the tube or pipe using theT110 socket depth marker (Tectite Classic, TectitePro & Tectite 316) or a tape measure and amarker/pencil.

For the socket depth of each size of fitting, see thetables above.

TUBE END PREPARATION

New tube ends should have anytape, labels or residualadhesive removed, taking carenot to damage the tube in theprocess. Check the tube isround, clean and free fromburrs and scores. If necessary, trim and prepare as below.

TUBE CUTTERSWe recommend the use of agood quality rotary tube cutterwith a sharp wheel. Cleansquare cut tube ends shouldalso have an external chamferapplied.

REMOVE BURRSEnsure the tube is cut squareand all burrs and sharp edgesremoved.

If a deburrer is not available,a fine file should be used toprepare tube end.

PIPE SHEARSFor cutting Tectite-PEX barrierpipe we recommend the use ofgood quality pipe shears with asharp blade. Clean square cutpipe ends should then haveTectite T66 support liners fitted.

5. When jointing chrome-plated copper tube withTectite Classic and Tectite Pro fittings, scribe thetube using the T110 scribing tool to ensure positivegrab ring location. This helps to accommodate anyvariance in chrome plate thickness. Note: The scribing function is not suitable forstainless steel tube.

JointingWhen using plastic pipe, ensure the correct typeand size of pipe support liner is fully inserted intothe pipe and complete the joint as follows:

A. Insert the tube/pipe into the mouth of thefitting to rest against the grab ring.

B. Push the tube/pipe firmly with a slight twistingaction until it reaches the tube stop with a positive‘click’.

C. Ensure the depth insertion mark correspondswith the mouth of the fitting, then pull firmly onthe tube/pipe to ensure the fitting is secure.

Installation tipsThe tube/pipe can be fully inserted by hand.

A damaged tube/pipe end will require excessive

force to be used. If this is the case you should

check the tube/pipe is round and deburred

before continuing.

Tectite fittings with plain male ends must not beused directly with capillary fittings, since heatingwill damage the non-metallic parts.

Heat should not be applied to Tectite fittings, directly or indirectly. They should be disconnected(where applicable) to avoid any possible damage tonon-metallic parts if they are to be used on asystem in conjunction with capillary fittings.Similarly, reconnection must not be considered untilthe heated tubes have been allowed to cool.

Use pipe clips to secure finished installations andprevent vibration or movement.

DisconnectingTectite Classic, Tectite Pro and Tectite 316 fittingsin sizes 10mm to 28mm can all be disconnected asdescribed below. Tectite Sprint Fittings are notsuitable for disconnection.

1. Place the forks of the disconnecting tool aroundthe fitting assembly. The fork side carrying theTectite brand logo should be positioned around thetube/pipe, with the opposite side around the neckof the fitting.

2. Squeeze the disconnecting tool with one handuntil the release collar in the fitting is compressed. With the other hand, twist out the tube/pipe usingthe thumb as a lever against the tool to assistdisconnection.

3. Check the fitting and tube/pipe for damagebefore remaking the joint.

4. The plastic disconnecting clip may be used whereonly an occasional disconnecting facility is needed.

THE TECTITE PUSH-FIT SYSTEM 13

T110

For speed and efficiency of tubepreparation the T110 provides multiple functions for Tectite Classic, Tectite Pro andTectite 316 fittings. Note, theT110 is not suitable for use onTectite Sprint fittings.

1) Socket depth marker – Insertthe tube into the correct sizedport/hole and draw a line on thetube as shown.

2) Deburr – Push and rotate(clockwise) the tubesimultaneously, several times, to remove burrs on tube end.

3) Scribe – Depress the scribingbutton whilst continuouslyrotating the tube several timesthrough 360º. This will score thechrome plated copper tubeallowing the grab ring to make afirm contact.

IMPORTANT

Ensure the tube/pipe is fittedsquare into the fitting.

Only black Tectite T66 pipesupport liners should be usedwhen installing Tectite-PEXbarrier pipe. These liners havebeen specifically designed forthe internal bore of theTectite-PEX barrier pipe. Areduction in joint performanceor damage to Tectite Sprint orTectite Classic fittingcomponents may occur ifanother brand of liner is used.

14 THE TECTITE PUSH-FIT SYSTEM

Although manufactured to a slightly differentdesign, jointing tubes in sizes from 35mm to54mm with Tectite Pro and Tectite 316 fittingsis just as easy as it is at smaller sizes.

Preliminaries & preparationThe first thing to consider when it comes toinstallation of 35mm to 54mm fittings is whetheryou plan to demount any fittings in the system ona regular basis. If you do, then we recommend youreplace the standard end cap with the appropriatelysized TDX demounting end cap.

To ensure the fittings stay clean and the 'O' ring isprotected from damage, never remove the fitting fromits packaging until immediately prior to installation.

When it comes to tube end preparation and socketdepth marking for jointing with 35mm to 54mmfittings, follow the same routine as outlinedin the preliminaries, tube preparation andinstallation tips sections for 10mm to 28mmfittings (page 12).

An alternative method of preparing copper tubeends before inserting into the fitting, is to use theappropriately-sized S122 percussion deburrerfeatured in the XPress accessories range. Place thecup of the deburrer onto the end of the tube andstrike it with a sharp blow from a copper-facedhammer. As well as removing burrs and sharpedges, this tool also creates a slight taper that aidsinsertion into the fitting.

Stainless steel tube ends must also be deburred, but a fine toothed file should be used.

Jointing 35mm to 54mmA. Insert the tube through the end cap to restagainst the grab ring.

B. Now push the tube firmly with a slight twistingaction until it reaches the tube stop with apositive ‘click’.

C. Ensure the depth insertion mark correspondswith the mouth of the fitting, then pull firmly onthe tube to ensure that the fitting is secure.

De-mounting with TDX demounting end capsTectite Pro and Tectite 316 fittings in 35mm to54mm sizes are supplied with conventional blackend caps. If you intend to demount the fitting on aregular basis, a TDX demounting end cap should bepurchased separately and substituted for thestandard end cap. A DTX Tectite end cap tool willalso be required.

Due to the potentially high frequency with whichTX61/TS61 stop ends may be demounted, they aresupplied with the TDX end caps fitted as standard.

Demounting the fitting from the tube is a simpleprocess when TDX demounting end caps have beeninstalled in the fittings.

1. To remove the tube from the fitting, insert theprongs of the Tectite DTX end cap tool in therecesses in the status indicator and turn anti-clockwise fully. The status indicator will withdrawinto the fitting, indicating that the fitting is in thede-mountable position. Using a ‘clockwise’ twistingand pulling action the tube can now be removed.

2. Before reusing the fitting, the status indicatormust be returned to the mounted position(protruding).

Important: If the status indicator is not in theprotruding position, the assembly will notwithstand full system pressure.

When the status indicator is protruding from theend cap then the fitting is secure and cannot beremoved (i.e. it is fully mounted).

35mm to 54mm Tectite Pro and Tectite 316fittings with standard end caps can also bedisconnected from pipework and reused.

Disconnecting with standard black end capsFittings with standard black end caps can bedemounted from the tube by unscrewing the endcap with the Tectite DTX end cap tool and snippingoff the grab ring with side cutters, discarding bothgrab ring and ‘O’ ring. A new grab ring and ‘O’ ringmust be used when reassembling the fitting (see the disassembly section).

DisassemblyReplacing the ‘O’ ring on 35mm to 54mm TectitePro and Tectite 316 fittings is easily achieved bydisassembling the fitting.

1. Have replacement parts for the discarded itemsready for insertion. Using a spanner on the fittingflats to prevent the fitting from rotating, insert theTectite DTX end cap tool into the slots in the endcap. Turn the tool anti-clockwise to unscrew the endcap and slide it along the tube away from thefitting body.

2. Pull the tube out of the fitting body.

3. Remove and discard the ‘O’ ring.

4. Remove and retain the alignment ring.

5. Snip off the grab ring with side cutters and discard.

ReassemblyTectite Pro grab rings (TX105) and Tectite 316 grabrings (TS106) are not interchangeable. Care must betaken when replacing grab rings to ensure that onlythe correct grab ring is used.

1. Before re-assembly have replacement parts forthe discarded items ready for insertion, ensuringall the components are clean and the ‘O’ ring islubricated using S130 Silicone lubricant from theXPress accessories range. Replace the componentsin the correct order, as shown, and check they arefully seated in the fitting body.

Note: The grab ring operates with an interferencefit in the body to provide electrical continuity. Therefore, the end cap must be tightened downflush with the fitting body.

2. Screw the end cap back into the fitting untilhand tight. If resistance is felt and the end cap isnot flush with the fitting body, remove the endcap and ensure the grab ring is fully located i.e.fully in contact with the alignment ring. Againscrew the end cap into the fitting until handtight. Temporarily insert a 300mm length ofdeburred tube into the fitting BUT NOT THROUGHthe grab ring to help locate the demount tool.Tighten the end cap a further 8mm to 10mm.Remove the tube.

3. Before reinstalling the fitting back into thesystem, check the end of the tube for damage. Ifthe tube is scored or damaged, remove the affectedsection with a tube cutter and prepare the tubeend as described in preliminaries and tubepreparation (page 12).

4. Reinsert the tube into the fitting up to the tubestop, ensuring the socket depth mark correspondswith the mouth of the fitting and that the finishedjoint is secure.

Once the end cap has beenunscrewed the other componentscan be removed and replacedif necessary.

DISASSEMBLY

REPLACEMENT 'O' RINGS

TX100 replacement 'O' ringsand TX105/TS106 grab ringsare available (sizes 35mm to54mm) in the event that anyare lost or damaged on-site.We recommend the use ofS130 Silicone lubricant greaseavailable from the XPressrange to aid insertion of thereplacement 'O' ring into thefitting as these 'O' rings aresupplied un-lubricated.

Disassembly and reassembly

Page 17: Tec Tite

Let’s now take a closer look at some of thespecific design considerations it is important totake account of when designing and installingpipework systems containing Tectite fittings.

Design considerationsSome contracts may still require that proprietarychemicals are used to cleanse and flush pipeworkbefore full commissioning. Tectite is compatiblewith a wide selection of specific products, to findout more please contact us.

Pipe restraintIn any installation, the system should be supportedto ensure the minimum stress is imposed on thetube/pipe and joints. For the maximum spacing ofsupporting brackets for internal installations, pleasesee the tables below.

InsulationFor all Tectite Systems, we recommend you adhereto the insulation requirements as specified by theWater Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.These requirements are equally applicable to plasticpipe and stainless steel tube.

Phenolic foamWhen using rigid phenolic foam (or other thermalinsulation) to lag pipework, always remember to referto the lagging manufacturer’s fixing instructions. To avoid the risk of external corrosion of copperpipework lagged with this foam, the EuropeanPhenolic Foam Association recommend that suchinsulation products be installed with a moisturebarrier. Materials like Densopaste or a plasticscovering applied by the tube manufacturer bothprovide an appropriate barrier between the outersurface of the tube or fitting and the foam.

Some manufacturers of this type of lagging supplytheir products with an internal, factory-appliedsodium silicate barrier to prevent external corrosionproblems. However, if you do need to add a barrierproduct, we recommend that all Tectite fittings arefully installed before these are applied and thatthey are completely coated.

Pipework clearanceWhen designing a Tectite System, please take careto ensure all joints can be made and demountedeasily. Observe minimum gaps and insertiondistances to ensure sufficient access for ademounting clip/tool, where applicable (see fittingspacing tables).

18 THE TECTITE PUSH-FIT SYSTEM

Thermal movementThermal movement is a major consideration whendesigning plumbing and heating systems.

Pipework systems expand and contract withchanges in temperature. If they are fixed too rigidlyand their movement restricted, the systems will besubject to stress which must be avoided. So it’simportant to take the effect of thermal movementinto account when designing or installing a system.

It’s especially important to avoid stressconcentrations between fixed points typically foundat radiators, valves and other fittings.

However, the ability of Tectite joints to rotate willaccommodate movement within the systemassociated with expansion and contraction incertain design conditions.

Expansion of copper tubeCopper has a coefficient of linear expansion of 17 x 10-6/°C. For example, a 10 metre length ofcopper pipe carrying hot water at 60°C willincrease in length by almost 7mm when heatedfrom an ambient temperature of 20°C.

What’s more, assuming that temperature cycling ofthe system is 20°C, then there will be a continuouscycle of expansion and contraction of 3.4mm.

Expansion of Tectite-PEX barrier pipeTectite-PEX barrier pipe has a coefficient of linearexpansion of 1.5 x 10-4/°C at 20°C to approximately2.8 x 10-4/°C at 82°C. As an example, werecommend you allow for 1% expansion on a lengthof pipe when installed at 20°C for use up to 82°C.

When using Tectite Sprint or Tecite Classic fittingswith other PEX or PB pipe please refer tomanufacturers instructions and pressure andtemperature ratings.

Expansion of stainless steel 316 System tubeStainless steel 316 System tube has a coefficient oflinear expansion of 16 x 10-6/°C. For example, a 10metre length of 316 System tube carrying hot waterat 60°C will increase in length by almost 6.5mmwhen heated from an ambient temperature of 20°C.

What’s more, assuming that temperature cycling ofthe system is 20°C, then there will be a continuouscycle of expansion and contraction of 3.2mm.

Expansion of carbon steel System tubeCarbon steel System tube has a coefficient of linearexpansion of 12 x 10-6/°C. For example, a 10 metrelength of carbon steel System tube carrying hotwater at 60°C will increase in length by almost5mm when heated from an ambient temperatureof 20°C.

What’s more, assuming that temperature cycling ofthe system is 20°C, then there will be a continuouscycle of expansion and contraction of 2.4mm.

Correct anchoring Always ensure the spur used to anchor the branchof a tee or connecting a radiator is long enough toallow normal thermal movement. Failure to observethis simple rule can lead to a failure.

Incorporating expansion loops or bellows devicesinto the system can help guard against suchproblems, whilst a horseshoe link or offset (seediagrams) is an ideal way to counteract continualthermal cycling.

Covered pipeworkMaking provision for thermal movement is vitalwhere pipework of any material is installed underscreed or plaster or passes through brick orblockwork.

The preferred practice is to pass tubes and pipesthrough sleeves or conduits or to lay them in ductssurrounded by loose, non-rigid material such asvermiculite or glass wool. For further information, consult the publication BS 6700:1997 WaterServices in Buildings.

Local Water AuthorityIt’s wise to consult the local water authority intoaccount when it comes to pipework accessibility.

Tube bendingPortable bending machines are ideal for coppertubes up to 28mm. Most machines bend the tubebetween matched formers and back guides thatsupport the outside diameter (OD) of the tube. Thiseliminates the risk of the tube wall collapsing.

The point at which the bending pressure is exertedmust be maintained at the correct distance in frontof the former’s point of support. It’s also important

COLD DRAW TECHNIQUES

Never use so-called ‘cold drawtechniques’ when designingexpansion joints into a systemcontaining any Tectite push-fitfittings. These techniques maycompromise the integrity ofthe surrounding joints.

TECHNIQUES FOREXPANSION STRESS

to keep formers and guides well lubricated. Bendingtubes correctly will avoid any wrinkling andflattening that can affect flow conditions. Usingadjustable bending machines (which allow the

pressure on the back guide to be adjusted) willensure perfect bends every time so long as the root(inside) bending radius is at least 3 times theoutside diameter of the tube.
