It is easy to get very stiff when chipping
as the technique is similar to putting
where the wrists are kept out of the
stroke. The following exercise can help
to promote the correct movement of
the body when playing a chip shot.
Take a ball with your right hand (if you
play right handed) and position
yourself to throw the ball underarm
towards the flag. You will find that you
naturally open your body up to the
target so that your right arm has more
space in which to move ( ).
Now throw the ball and note how your
lower body naturally rotates and your
weight moves to the left side (
). The further you throw the ball, the
more your body will rotate. Do this a
few times and then take a club and
practise the movement without a ball.
Then try with a ball, taking note of how
you finish the movement ( ). If
it feels the same as the throwing action,
then you are on the right track and
chipping will become a more natural
movement.
Allowing your body to move towards
the target and to naturally rotate is one
of the keys to chipping well. If you
stand still with no movement, you will
have a hard job making the correct
contact with the ball.

Castro Marim Golfe & Country Club once again attended the
world's largest tourism fair at ITB Berlin. Covering a total area
of 150,000 square meters, around 11,000 exhibitors from all
over the world attend the exhibition. Nearly 165,000 people
visited this exhibition this year.
During the highly successful fair our Golf Secretary, Mrs
Arcângela Rocha, bumped into the word famous football
player David Beckham. During this brief encounter Mrs.
Rocha told David Beckham about Castro Marim Golfe &
Country Club and explained that it is fast becoming a secret
hideaway for some other famous football stars. She pointed
out it is the perfect place to relax and keep fit at the same
time, whilst being an ideal holiday location for the whole
family. The famous footballer seemed very impressed and
speechless.
Because of its great location within easy reach of both
Madrid and the UK, Castro Marim Golfe &Country Club
could be the perfect location for a Beckham family holiday

Millennium BCP, Portugal's largest
private bank for mortgages. Under the
agreement, the bank will offer especially
favourable conditions on mortgages to
buy properties at the Club.
With a rate as low as 0.6% over Eurobor, it

the opportunity to make interest only
payments for a limited period.
We are very pleased with this new
arrangement with Millennium BCP , says
Marc van Gelder, Sales and Marketing
Director. Besides the fact that we are
able to offer our clients special
conditions and an interest rate that's hard
to beat, Millennium BCP are in a position
to move fast and therefore make it
possible for new property owners to
move into their dream villa very quickly .
It 's also good to know that besides
Millennium BCP we have also agreed
special conditions with Barclays. Our
clients therefore have a choice of banks
that they can call upon , he adds.

like any more information about these
special mortgage arrangements. We will
also be happy to make an appointment
for you with Millennium BCP or Barclays.

2006 started very well for villa sales at
Castro Marim Golfe & Country Club.
Nearly all our linked villas in the first
phase have now been sold. We have
had a lot of interest from the Irish market
recently , says Marc van Gelder, Sales
and marketing Director. It 's good to see
that we are attracting a nice mix of
nationalities .
The building work for the first phase of
linked villas is nearing completion and by
the end of this summer all 55 will be
finished. An unusual and attractive
feature of our resort is the small size of
the cluster units. This means property
owners have only a short period of
construction work before they can start
to enjoy the tranquillity of their natural
surroundings.
We have a few linked villas remaining
available at a very attractive price. Fully
furnished and equipped with all kitchen
appliances and air-conditioning and
heating systems, the villas offer a
guaranteed lease back for a period of 3
years. During this period the property
owners receive 20.000 euros annually.
These luxury linked villas including all of
the above mentioned will have a sales
price of 550.000 euros. This special offer
only applies to four linked villas.
Please don't hesitate to contact our sales
office to obtain more information or to
see the villas. Special mortgage facilities
are available, please see mortgage

The nearest main town to Castro Marim,
historic Vila Real de Santo António's
origins can be traced back to a specific
date 30th December 1773 - the day on
which the Royal Charter founding the
town was signed. The town was built
quickly under the iron will of the Marquis
of Pombal, prime minister to King José I
(1714-1777). The task of marking out the
street plan was started on 2nd March
1774 and by 6th August the Town Hall,
the Customs House and the barracks
had already been completed, and the
church was in its early stages.
In the town centre stands an obelisk, a
symbol of the power of the King and his
prime minister. The streets are arranged
on a grid pattern, as straight as soldiers
on parade, leading off from a broad,
open square. The façades of the houses
reflect the balanced forms of a sober and
restrained architectural style. Vila Real de
Santo António is a perfect example of the
ideals of the 18th century put into
practice.
The town's formality contrasts with the
gentle landscapes along the banks of the
Guadiana river where, here and there,
esplanades provide oases of cool and
welcome relief from the heat of the sun.
The end of the 19th century and the
decades that followed were a time of
prosperity for Vila Real de Santo António.
The presence of sardines and tuna in the
waters off the Algarve coast turned the
town into a major canning centre, while
its port was much frequented by the
ships that sailed up the Guadiana to load
the ore dung from the mines at São
Domingos. One indication of the
dynamism and wealth of the town at this
stage is that it was the first place in the
Algarve to have gas lighting in 1886.
The town's history does not, however,
begin with the foundation of Vila Real de
Santo António. This part of the coast has
been inhabited since ancient times, as
can be seen from the dolmen and tholos -
a beehive shaped tomb - in Nora near
Cacela. Under the Romans and later the
Moors, Cacela became an important
town. After its castle was captured by
Paio Peres Correia, master of the Order
of Santiago in 1240, Cacela was the
jumping -off point of the reconquest of
the whole of the Algarve.
Today, Vila Real de Santo António and its
municipality glory in the tourist trade that
has grown up around its magnificent
beaches. Fishing, agriculture and
commerce are the mainstays of an
economy that is expanding and
diversifying.

Vila Real de Santo AntónioA town with a fascinating history
Places to see
The Church
The Museum
was built in the 18th century and has since suffered fire damage on a
number of occasions. The church contains a fine collection of 18th century statues,
most notable is a Nossa Senhora da Encarnção or Our Lady of the Incarnation by the
sculptor Machado de Castro. The stained glass windows in the main chapel and the
baptistery, which were installed in the 1940's, are by the Algarvean artist, Joaquim
Rebocho.
is home to an exhibition of works by the painter and engraver Manuel
Cabanas, who was born in the town and after whom the museum is named. It contains
the largest collection of wooden engravings in Portugal, as well as an interesting
collection of more than 200 stones that were once used as part of the lithographic
process to print designs on tins of tuna and sardines.
Castro Marim Golfe & Country Club has established links with
Castro Marim School to give local children an insight into the
great game of golf.
On several occasions in February and March, seventeen
enthusiastic ten-year-olds from Class 4E enjoyed a special
education programme run by our team:
· Greenkeeper Luis Fialho explained to the children the special
skills involved in course maintenance.
· Golf Secretary Mrs Arcângela Rocha gave them a tour of the
reception area and clubhouse as well as a highly popular
buggy ride around the course.
· Golf Professional David Holder and Mark Lavoo gave some
tuition on the driving range and putting green.
Castro Marim Golfe & Country Club's Managing Director Dick
Lavoo comments: This education programme will continue at
Castro Marim Golfe & Country Club throughout the year. We are
very enthusiastic about teaching the young people of Castro
Marim the ins and outs of golf .
