Girl’s Windmill Pitching Volum e 397 July 08, 2013 Team New Jersey Leaving home Wednesday morning at 3:00 am to get to Edison for a 7:50 am game is no picnic for me any time but I had been looking forward to going to the showcase for some time. This time I was going as a spectator to watch my students and the other girls I had come to know through coaching with the Morris County Belles Gold. Then I got a call from Nick Frungillo asking if I would again be in the dugout. When I arrived I was told I was just expected to produce 5 no hitters Wednesday. What would make it more difficult was the fact we had only two games, but being the trooper that I am I came through with flying colors on the very first game and a no hitter it was....for the opposing team. As far as game results go, it was down hill from there. They keep hitting us with that dumb rule that you have to score runs to win. Then I watched one of my pitchers who decided to invent some new mechanics to use in one of the biggest showcases in the country. I took photo bursts of her, called her over to the end of the dugout and asked her why she was doing it. She gave me a blank stare like she wanted to say “I wasn’t doing that”, but I had her right there digitally preserved. She did correct it and was fine and picked up quite a bit of speed. I made the comment more than once that I felt like I was trying to lasso flies or wrestle monkeys. Sometimes it gets rather frustrating but then I think of all the times they make me so proud and I don’t mind learning to use a lasso. I can do without too many monkey wrestling matches though. There were some highlights for my students which goes to prove that they don’t have to see a lot to know if you have what they want. I’m talking about college coaches. However, I am seeing some contradiction to that statement. I have had some coaches want to see the pitchers press further into the game rather than do two innings and be pulled for the next pitcher. You can run into a coach wanting to see pitcher “A” stretch it out for 4 innings while another coach is asking you when pitcher “B” will throw while you still have pitchers “C” and “D” on the bench and they will have to wait for the next game. The highlights I spoke of many have already seen either on my facebook or on the facebook entries of the parents or girls. I was called out of the dugout to talk about my pitchers with several college coaches including Tim Walton of the University of Florida, Megan Bryant of Stony Brook University, and others and who, of course, called me out but Nick Frungillo doing his tireless work of circling the field and talking with every coach. Several coaches were interested in Belles players. If I start naming them I will omit someone and don’t want to do that. I did have the Elon assistant express interest in Katie Baron and Nick noted about 4 others also expressed interest in her. That was from the coach to me so I can say that one, plus Megan told me she was very interested in Shaina Reed and Shelby Smith. Maine also was interested in Smith. A lot of the Belles unsigned girls are getting a lot of interest and will be doing unofficials pretty soon. Bill Dryden

The Belles Gold were eliminated Friday morning by the North Carolina Challengers and I went over to watchKat Betts of the Belles Elite pitch against the Rhode Island Thunder Gold which boasts Ashley Guillette, a 2015who has verbally committed to the University of Florida.Kat had one shaky inning but otherwise pitched well enough to draw the interest of my long time friend andhead coach of D-II Caldwell College, Dean Johnson. Dean liked her and asked me to tell her to look at theschool website, see if they have her major, and see if it’s too far from home and if everything was good, wewould go from there. Kat and her family did as told and then sent an email to Coach Johnson. The Belles were all eliminated so all that was left for me to do was to watch some high quality ball withouthaving to concentrate on my pitching students. I did that watching the quarterfinals and semifinals until lateSaturday afternoon. I had time to catch up a little with John Thompson, whose daughter Mackenzie plays withthe NJ Inferno Gold until they were eliminated in the semifinal by the Lady Lightning Gold out of NC. At thattime between the heat and not having a soul to talk to, I went back to the hotel, went to dinner with Cheryl andcalled it a day.I always enjoy going to Team New Jersey and will return for the fall showcase. It always provides results for mypitchers and always provides excellent competition. Now I look at the date and realize the summer season is racing away. As of today, the season is half over and Ican’t remember where the time went. We’ve zipped past Team New Jersey and now TNT is behind us with theStop DWI Showcase in Binghamton, NY July 12-14.

Tips

Find your feet! If you are a pitcher, when you step on the pitching rubber and until it is 2 nature to you,nd

find your feet. Make sure they are far enough apart that you are balanced on the mound. Make sure theyboth point in the same direction and then when you explode make sure the feet are going toward thecatcher. It seems like such a simple thing but your pitch begins with your feet. If they are not correct itwill affect the rest of the pitch. So make sure you find your feet.

Do you see the logo above? That is the logo of the Visalus weight loss and fitness program. Two of mydaughters, their husbands, my wife and myself are on the program and have had great results, losing pounds, increasing energy. The proof is in the photos below:

Seeing is believing. Is it a magic bullet? No! It is a program that can help anyone who is willing to take a challenge. I went to the cardiologist January2 and he told me he didn’t really care about me losing more weight. He just wanted me to stay active. I willnd

shoot for 200 lbs anyway. My heart rate (electrocardiogram) was 56 bpm. My oxygen rate was 98.75% and myblood pressure was 122/70. I feel great and have energy. I am now at 208 which is 42 lbs lighter. My wife Cherylhad knee problems and could not walk much. Once she started the program, she got up to 40 minutes a day onthe elliptical and when we go to Sam’s Club she will say “let’s leave the jeep here and walk to Walmart.” Thatis a world of difference. Ashley and Ray belong to a gym and workout and Kim does a spinning class plus walkstrails. This is a completely new world for all of us and the Visalus program transforms people. It is even certifiedKosher for those who adhere to Jewish diets.Take the 90-day challenge and see the difference.Go to my website at Bill’s 90-day Visalus challenge , step on the mound and take the challenge.

Congratulations to Maddie Grimm of the Heartbreakers Gold. The rising junior pitcher/shortstop verballycommitted to Hofstra. The coaches saw the young lady at the Pennsbury NFCA camp and were impressed with her, watched her in tournament play and the rest is history. I worked for many years with Maddie from the time she wasa 10U Maryland Star. Her dad, Tom sent me a text informing me of her decision and thanked me for all of my hard work with the youngladies. “Tom, great kids like Maddie make it a pleasure and give me fond memories.” I feel priviledged to have been asmall part of her life.”I also received a Facebook post last night from Lorrie Gibson, mother of Lauren Gibson who played 4 years for theUniversity of Tennessee and also has been and is currently with Team USA. We were talking about her playing atthe World Cup of Softball which starts on ESPN this Thursday (don’t miss it). I asked what her plans were andLorrie said she would return to UT as a 5 year senior. I asked if she would work with Ralph and Karen and Lorrieth

said she would be working for the Lady Vols Athletic Director. I said she had a great future and Lorrie replied“Thanks, Bill. Appreciate your kind words and everything you did to help her get where she is today...you were ahuge part of people knowing who she was because of her pitching.”Another great family I have had the honor of knowing.I have girls who stay and girls who leave. It goes with the territory and I understand that but then I have those whohave an appreciation for our work together and where it got them and they don’t let me forget and that means a lot.I want nothing but the best for my students. I try to help them fulfill their dreams and help them go as far as theywant to go. I have been accused of pushing them to one team over another. I have never suggested anyone leave ateam unless they asked for my help to get somewhere else. There was a post on some PA board that pitchers had tobe my students to play for the Belles. At the time of the post I had one girl on the Belles roster but did send guestpitchers to them when they needed them, but only after they had talked with their current coach.I have reasons for appreciating families like the Grimms and the Gibsons. They are the reason I keep going.

Since I began the lessons in New Church, VA on Fridays we are up to 10 private Friday students. I appreciate somany of you entrusting your daughters to my tutelage. The Davis family is another great family and are furnishingthe building for the lessons.

Shelby Smith of the Morris County Belles Gold did some impressing of her own at Team New Jersey andarrangements are being made for her to do unofficial visits to D-1 Stony Brook University and the University ofMaine when she goes to the “New England’s Finest” Showcase in Plainfield, MA. She should visit Stoney Brookbefore and Maine afterwards.

Shaina Reed has visited Monmouth, has an offer on the table, and is arranging visits for Stony Brook, St Francis, and Wagner, all D-1 schools.

Some of the Belles Gold and Belles Elite players are invited and will participate in the Big Apple one day camp andshowcase in Chester, NY July 17 . The event camp instructors include coaches from U TX, San Antonio, UF,th

Fairfield, Stony Brook, Fordham, Lehigh, University of Binghamton, Iona, University of Va, Hofstra, East CarolinaUniversity, Marist, University of South Carolina, Fordham, St Johns, plus an additional 75 schools will attend towatch the afternoon games. Belles players attending from the Gold team are: Shaina Reed, Shelby Smith, TaylorPechin, Rhianna McGlone, Kailey Perry, Gianna Kinhofer and Kacie Worswick and as a Belles Gold guest HannahEslick. From the Belles Elite Maddie Bennett, Kate O’toole, Ashley Shur, and Blaire Morsell will attend.

The Belles Gold went 3-2-1 at the TNT Summer Showcase and were watched by over 50 college coaches withNick Frungillo talking with each. I have no report on the Belles Elite record at the showcase.

The Delaware Storm 18U played in the Firecracker Showcase in Wilmington, DE. I am not certain of their recordin the showcase but I do know they made it to the championship game Sunday before losing. I had 3 rising 8 gradeth

pitching students with the team and they all got a little work. From the reports they had good outings and not sogood outings, which is to be expected from girls who have not yet moved into the 8 grade. Hopefully, they willth

grow. From the unofficial reports I got, student Cris Quillen closed out a game by pitching the last inning as relieffor Annah Brittingham and preserving a 7-0 shutout. I think student Maggie Cannon came in the next game againstthe Xtreme after Brittingham went 4 and gave up either 1 or 2 runs and then student Peyton Elzey finished. As I said, I’m working from texts and they were switching pitchers between the young Storm and 18U Storm and Igave up trying to keep it straight. Suffice it to say they had a good weekend.

The Delaware Storm 14U with Peyton Elzey back from the 18U will play the Morris County Belles 14U thisweekend at Olney Park in a USSSA tournament. If Cheryl doesn’t have plans for me I want to go over to thattournament and watch some games. My girls in Virginia did their 10U and 12U Little League All Star games and played tough. I am very proud ofLivvy Tullous and Hope Abell of the 10U team and how far they have come since they began lessons. Also I heardthat Payton Mcnure pitched the best game of her life in the 11-12 All Stars. It seems like every outing for her getsbetter. Now we get to add Parker Murphy and Alison Bowman to the group.

Sierra Eismann did a great job for the Berlin 9-10 year old All Star team. This was Berlin’s first year of LittleLeague softball and the team went pretty far in district before longtime Little League District 8 power Delmar sentthem home.

In Delaware I went to see my granddaughter play an 8:00 9-10 All Star game against Lower Sussex where anotherof my students, Sierra Livingston plays. Livvy and her Millsboro team got run ruled as they went through severalpitchers, (not Livvy. She played first and is not ready for game play as a pitcher yet.) Sierra played well and hitwell. I didn’t get to any of the next night games but Livvy’s team lost in a pitcher duel 44-19 or something like that.Sierra’s team apparently pulled out a nail biter in the winner’s bracket and Sierra had a walk off RBI.

I’m doing a countdown. Only 28 day until I am in Myrtle Beach for the WFC World Series. Fun in the sun and thensome! Wishing my life away again.
