The ribbon color associated with Ovarian Cancer is teal, hence the name T.E.A.L., or Tell Every Amazing Lady. Tell Every Amazing Lady About Ovarian Cancer Louisa M. McGregor Ovarian Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)3 not for profit charitable organization. Our mission is to promote awareness of the signs and symptoms of Ovarian Cancer, to enable early detection, and to help find the cure for this deadly disease. T.E.A.L. is a grassroots organization started by two sisters in 2009 with a passion to make a difference in the world. When Louisa M. McGregor was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, she and her sister Pamela Esposito-Amery both decided to create T.E.A.L. – Tell Every Amazing Lady About Ovarian Cancer Louisa M. McGregor Ovarian Cancer Foundation and organize a walk to promote awareness and raise funds for research. It quickly became the largest Ovarian Cancer walk in New York City with the help of volunteers, local sponsors and community support. Unfortunately, Louisa lost her four-year battle with Ovarian Cancer in March 2011. T.E.A.L. continues on with its mission to bring an end to this horrible disease. Ovarian Cancer is the leading cause of death among gynecological cancers. We draw attention to the disease through various fundraising events including our annual T.E.A.L. Walk, which has become the largest Ovarian Cancer walk in New York City held every September during National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Our other fundraising events include partnering with The New York Mets for the First Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day at Citi Field, playing a charity softball game against radio station WPLJ, and receiving donated items for raffles and auctions from the New York Jets and Bon Jovi. Throughout the year T.E.A.L. is also involved with online marketing campaigns. Most women are not tested for Ovarian Cancer during a routine exam. There is currently no test that screens for the disease. That’s why research and awareness is so important to us. The prognosis for this cancer is so poor because doctors lack the knowledge, understanding, and tools to detect the disease early when survival chances are best. Lack of awareness, lack of treatment options, and lack of ability to diagnose come down to lack of funding for research. T.E.A.L. is always looking for sponsors, grants, and pro bono services in order to more successfully raise research funds. We currently have no corporate funding, no grants, and no spokesperson but have still been able to raise $187,000 for Ovarian Cancer research and awareness since 2009. We fully function on donation money and the help of volunteers who donate their spare time to further our cause. Visit our website at www.tealwalk.org for more information.

What is T.E.A.L. Walk? The T.E.A.L. Walk is an annual non-‐competitive 5K event that takes place in Brooklyn, NY. Participants include survivors, caregivers, volunteers, families and friends coming together to promote awareness of Ovarian Cancer and to raise funds for research. In 2009, the T.E.A.L. Walk, which has become a movement was started by two sisters who wanted to create a walk to raise awareness of Ovarian Cancer. It quickly became New York City’s largest Ovarian Cancer Walk and continues to be an annual event. The ribbon color associated with Ovarian Cancer is teal, hence the name T.E.A.L., or Tell Every Amazing Lady. September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. The T.E.A.L. Walk is held every September in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY with thousands of people in attendance. Our 4th annual T.E.A.L. Walk is on Saturday, September 8, 2012 rain or shine. T.E.A.L. Walk is an inspiring day for all especially for an Ovarian Cancer survivor. Gail L. from New Jersey told us “My one word to describe my experience at the T.E.A.L. Walk would be 'MOVING'. And I don't mean the group's forward motion through the park. It was MOVING for me to be with so many other women who had gone through what I had gone through. It was MOVING for me to be on stage with the other survivors and know that we had won! It was MOVING for me to be surrounded and supported by family and friends that day. It was a MOVING experience that will stay with me forever.” In addition to the actual walk, there are always fun activities, stage entertainment and educational booths. If a person cannot attend the walk, they can still make a general donation or sponsor a walk participant. Teams are also an important part of the walk where people come together as a group to tribute a loved one. Building a team is a great opportunity to walk in honor of or in memory of someone. Registration opens in the spring so that a participant has plenty of time to build a team and reach fundraising goals. Pre-‐Registration is highly recommended. Same Day Registration is also open to participants on the morning of the event. Because we are a grassroots organization, T.E.A.L. relies heavily on donations, sponsors and pro bono services in order to have a successful fundraising event. There are many sponsorship opportunities available including specific areas of the walk, such as the finish line sponsors, stage sponsors, t-shirt sponsors, and water station sponsors. Tell Every Amazing Lady has raised $187,000 since 2009 for Ovarian Cancer research and awareness. To discuss sponsorship opportunities, how to become a volunteer or for more information, please contact Executive Director and Co-founder Pamela Esposito-Amery 917-‐374-‐8506 or email [email protected].

Ovarian Cancer: The Facts Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecological cancers in the United States and is the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths among U.S. women. In the United States alone, there will be approximately 22,000 new cases of ovarian cancer each year, and about 15,500 women will die from the disease. The symptoms of Ovarian Cancer are often vague and subtle, making it difficult to diagnose. There is no effective screening test for Ovarian Cancer but there are tests, which in some cases can help detect Ovarian Cancer when patients are at high risk or have early symptoms. In spite of this, patients are usually diagnosed in advanced stages and only 45% survive longer than five years. Only 19% of cases are caught before the cancer has spread beyond the ovary to the pelvic region. However, when Ovarian Cancer is detected and treated early, the five-year survival rate is greater than 92%. Until we have better early detection tools, all women should be educated about the disease so they can achieve early diagnosis and successful treatment. A woman's lifetime risk of Ovarian Cancer is 1 in 67. Listen to your body. Do not ignore the symptoms. Signs & Symptoms • Vague but persistent and unexplained gastrointestinal complaints such as gas, nausea, and indigestion • Abdominal bloating, pelvic and/or abdominal pain, and/or feeling of fullness • Frequency and/or urgency of urination • Unexplained change in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea) • Unexplained weight gain or loss • Unusual fatigue • Shortness of breath • New and unexplained abnormal postmenopausal bleeding Risk Factors • Increasing age, with highest occurrence in women over 50 • Family or personal history of ovarian, breast, endometrial, or colon cancer • Uninterrupted ovulation (having no pregnancies, infertility, low parity) • Presence of gene mutations, especially BRCA1 or BRCA2 Prevention and Risk Reduction • Use of oral contraceptives for more than five years can reduce your risk by approximately 50% • Multiple pregnancies, having first full-term pregnancy before the age of 25 • Breast feeding • Hysterectomy/Tubal ligation substantially reduces risk • Removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes (oophorectomy) dramatically reduces the risk of Ovarian Cancer. Primary peritoneal cancer, which is microscopically almost identical to ovarian cancer, can still occur but is infrequent. Have Your Doctor Perform the Following Tests Annually • Ask your doctor for a CA-125 blood test, a transvaginal ultrasound and a vaginal-rectal pelvic examination • There is no specific test that screens for ovarian cancer but these tests listed above have shown to help with

diagnosis in some studies. • A pap smear does NOT check for ovarian cancer!

New York City’s Xavier High School held a dress down day for its students in June 2011, organized by graduating senior Gerard Napolitano and raised $1500.

The Quinnipiac University women’s soccer team, in conjunction with the Quinnipiac Intramurals Depart-ment hosted the 2nd Annual “Give Cancer the Boot!” fundraiser event on Sunday, May 1 at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field and raised over $500. This year, thanks to the efforts of student Ariel Mandell, proceeds were donated to T.E.A.L.

T.E.A.L. visited Brooklyn’s Bishop Kearney High School on April 7, 2011 to rally the students for their Dress Down Day fundraiser for promoting ovarian cancer awareness to the young women at the all girls school. T.E.A.L. was on hand to give the students an opportunity to assist T.E.A.L. as part of their community service requirements. As part of the Dress Down Day spearheaded by students Teressa Cali and Danielle Farragher, many students wore teal and raised over $900.
