Engagement Activities Continued The first activity I helped with was working with the students to create an octopus. The teacher divided the students to work on various tentacles. It was a class of about 12 students. 7 boys and 6 girls but, it wasnt always 12 because some students would be absent. I also read with two students and, the students watched an educational video about sea life.

Building a Bridge The students were focusing on transportation. The students watched a Magic School Bus film about the various types of bridges. After the video, the students were required to break off into two teams and create there own bridge structure. Before they could begin building they had to design their idea on paper. I walked around and assisted the students with their design ideas.

Participant DemographicsSo, the age group was 2nd to 5th however most of the kids were around 8 or 9.I did not ask what specific disabilities were in the group because I was not allowed to. Based on looks and behavior I know there were some students with autism, down syndrome, learning disabilities, and behavior disorders. A few of the students were pulled throughout the day for various therapies. Out of the twelve students I served I think about 5 based on behaviors.

Perceptions of DifferencesThe students felt average to me.I previously worked at east UCP so, I was familiar with the childrens behaviors.I did not feel any different working with children with disabilities as I did working with regular students. I was nervous about the assignment because I was not able to meet face to face to get the audio version of what you were expecting. There were a few behaviors that made me recognize their exceptionalities like: frustration and anger when they did not understand something, one child had to be told to do something repeatedly in sign language because he could not speak or hear, one little girl would say no a lot and isolate herself, and one little boy did not respect personal space.

Connections to Your Course EEX 40701. Behavioral systems which are set in place to help improve a childs behavior. It varies for group to individual therapy. I noticed some kids would be pulled one on one to go work with various therapists.2. I noticed the teacher would catch a child as they were becoming frustrated and use calm words to redirect their anger. She would also encourage students to separate when they were becoming too annoyed with each other. I witnessed the process of deescalating a situation or redirecting the behavior. 3. The importance or routine for students with cognitive disabilities. I noticed that the teacher strived to stay on schedule with the students and, some of the students automatically knew what to do next before they were even asked because of how well their class was structured. One girl in particular would always know when it was time for snack and she knew to get her snack before the teacher said anything.

Civic Engagement

Volunteering humbles people.Volunteering shows the importance of humility.Schools are underfunded so extra help is always appreciated.Volunteering changes lives.

Final Thoughts & ReflectionsI could volunteer at upc more. I could tell people about the great services the schools provide in case they have a kid or know someone with a earning disability.I think people could do service learning or volunteering anywhere that helps make a difference in peoples lives. I think Flowers for Algernon, Tuesdays with Morrie, And A Beautiful Mind are eye opening depictions of life with disabilities and they cold evoke some form of compassion from people.
