OverviewBackground Gary Soto’s work is often praised for avoiding stereotypical portrayals

of Hispanic people. Instead, Soto portrays his characters as unique personalities

who happen to be part of the Chicano culture. His appealing stories offer non-

Hispanic students an opportunity to relate to the rapidly-growing Hispanic

population in the United States.

Book Summary As with much of Gary Soto’s work, the play Novio Boy explores

the themes of friendship and love in the Mexican American community. Novio Boy

is about a teenage boy’s first date. The play explores other important relationships

in the boy’s life as well. Soto uses these relationships to fuel much of the humor in

the play. Soto peppers his play with Spanish phrases (a glossary is included in the

back of the book) and incorporates slang and modern-day pop-culture references

in order to create realistic dialogue. The rich, contemporary language appeals to a

teenage audience.

About the AuthorGary Soto was born in Fresno, California, in 1952. During his youth, Soto worked

his first collection of poetry, The Elements of San Joaquin.

Soto broke into the children’s literature scene in the 1990s with his volume of short

stories, Baseball in April and Other Stories. Since then he has written over sixty

works for children and adults. Soto is a very well-known and highly praised Chicano

writer. He was the first Chicano writer to be nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Soto

Getting Started

What If?Everyone is wearing the same cool, new shoes. You want a pair of the shoes, but you do not have enough money. You decide you will do everything you can to get these shoes. You get an after school job and save all of the money you earn. Finally, you have enough to buy the shoes!

You tell your parents and friends about what you want to buy. Your friends tell you the shoes are not cool anymore. Your parents say you should buy less expensive shoes. Even your neighbor gives his opinion—and tells you the shoes are ugly!

Make notes about how this would affect you.

• Would the opinions of your friends and family make you not want the shoes?

• How would you respond to your friends and family?

• What would happen if you bought the shoes anyway?

Connect to The Exchange Question Discuss how this situation could relate to The Exchange Question: Do people’s opinions affect how we act? Why? Summarize your discussion.

Getting StartedHave students read What If? on Student Journal, page 2

and discuss the scenario. Encourage students to describe the

similarities and differences between the scenario and their lives and

imagine how the situation would affect them.

• Have students write their responses to the three questions below

the scenario and compare answers with a partner or the group.

• Have students discuss how the situation might relate to The

Exchange question and then write a brief summary of their

discussion in the Student Journal.

Reading the BookThere are several options for reading Novio Boy.

They include:

• Whole Class Assign sections of the book and discussion dates

using the planner on Student Journal, page 1. After students

read a section and respond to the corresponding Student

Journal pages, have a class discussion. At the end of the book,

the class meets for The Exchange.

• Small Groups Read the book’s Introduction with the group.

Group members then read an agreed-upon number of pages,

complete the corresponding Student Journal pages, and meet

to discuss. When they finish the book, they meet again for The

Exchange. Use the planner on Student Journal, page 1 to

establish meeting times.

• Independently Students read the book on their own and

then meet as a group for The Exchange. Use the planner on

Student Journal, page 1 to establish the meeting time.

• Guided Reading Have students read Student Journal,

page 2 and monitor their discussion of the What If? scenario.

Read aloud the book Introduction to give students background

on the book. As students read, use the Before You Move On

questions to guide comprehension. Use the Look Ahead to set

a focus for reading the next set of pages. At the end of each

section, assign the appropriate Student Journal pages. Discuss

the pages before starting the next section. Establish a date for

The Exchange and record it on the planner.

Novio Boy

Introduction

Read the Introduction on pages 9–11 in Novio Boy. The Introduction will help you understand key concepts in the book. Knowing them will help you discuss and write about the book.

The Introduction includes information about

• what plays are

• how plays are developed

• how a play is performed

• understanding comedic elements that are used in a play

After you read the Introduction, answer these questions to check your understanding.

1. What is a play? Why is Novio Boy considered a play?

2. How does a playwright create a play?

3. What comedic elements make a play humorous? How do the elements work?

A play is a form of writing that has acts and scenes. It is performed in front of an audience. Novio Boy is a play because it has acts, scenes, characters, and dialogue for actors.

A playwright develops a story, setting, and relationships between characters. The playwright creates dialogue and actions for those characters. He or she also provides stage directions for actors.

Physical comedy, mistaken identity, and word play. Mistaken identity creates confusing and humorous situations. Physical comedy and word play draw on verbal and physical humor to entertain the audience.

Scenes 5 – 7PAGE 82

1. Character’s Motive Reread pages 69–71. Why doesn’t Rudy’s mother tell Patricia that Rudy is her son?

Rudy’s mother wants to get honest information about Rudy and the date. She wants to know if she can trust Patricia.

The author added her because she is funny. She brings comedy to the play.

PAGE 107

Rudy is distracted by his friends and family, but he is also able to get advice and extra money from them during the date.

2. Conclusions Reread pages 105–107. Why does everyone call Rudy “Novio Boy” at the end of the play? Novio means “sweetheart” in Spanish.

Student Journal, page 7

Novio Boy

What If?4. Connect Look at your notes on Student Journal, page 2. Think about what might

happen if everyone started giving you their different opinions on something you felt strongly about. Compare this to Novio Boy. How did other people’s opinions affect Rudy?

sense of humor. How do you make a good impression? Explain.

2. Mood Rudy’s friends and family all happen to be at the restaurant for Rudy’s big date. How does this coincidence affect the mood? Use the words coincidence and comedy in your response.

Guidelines for Short EssayHave students write a short essay in response to one of the writing prompts below. Use the Scoring Guide to assist in your evaluation of their essays.

A. What makes this play a comedy? How would you rewrite the ending to make it funnier?

Responses should include that the play involves comedic elements, such as mistaken

identity, physical comedy, and word play. There are many jokes that add to the humor.

The ending could have more problems for Rudy to make it funnier.

B. How does Rudy change over the course of the play? How does he remain the same? Do you think that one event can help a person change?

Responses should include that Rudy matures as he prepares for his fi rst date with an older

girl; he decides to sell the toys he played with as a boy; he learns more about dating and

girls; he learns that it is okay to be himself. He remains the same because he is still playful

and friendly; he does not change for Patricia.
